Life can be as difficult to predict as a hard shot to the corner in Rocket League. You can do your best to prepare, but you have to stay on your toes and get ready to make adjustments. That's what the popular Rocket League YouTuber, FLuuMP, had to do when he decided to change careers and launch his channel well into his adult years.
FLuuMP, who goes by Brett McGranahan in his everyday life, was never a gamer. So of course, he never planned on making his living from videos that revolve around a single video game. Brett's path was shaping up to be straight and narrow. As a middle child of five kids who grew up in a small town in Iowa, he went to college after being homeschooled to pursue a career as a professor. After graduation, he married his longtime girlfriend, Audra, and decided to attend grad school. With video games nowhere on his radar, Brett was checking off all the traditional boxes of higher education and family life.
"I was in grad school for a year in Massachusetts," Brett recalls." Then I realized that getting a PhD and becoming a professor was super competitive and probably wasn't going to happen. Audra and I found out we were pregnant too. So, it was time to start working and stop going into debt."
At that point, Brett's career was all but cemented with his stable 9-to-5 job and a family on the way. But, he is a creative person and sometimes creative people are waiting for their spark to ignite something bigger. He was visiting home back in Iowa for the holidays and his brother-in-law said that he had to play a new game called Rocket League. Like most first-time players, he was admittedly horrible at it. Even with his early struggles, it was the first game to ever hook him.
"I went back to North Carolina and started playing 2v2 split screen with one of my friends on his PS4. Then I started playing on my own with a crappy $300 laptop that wasn't meant for gaming, getting like 35-40 frames per second on the lowest settings." Brett laughs. "It looked terrible, but I was still having fun."
Brett found his passion and turning it into a career was within reach. Fast forward a year. He had a daughter with another child on the way, and made another recent career switch as an insurance agent with a move back to Iowa. Meanwhile, Rocket League was still a constant. Juggling professional life, home life, and gaming was stretching him thin. He was waking up at 5 a.m. just so he could play and try to climb the competitive ranks before heading into work while his family slept. He knew he wanted to make his love for Rocket League into his career. The goal was to be self employed, and YouTube was the avenue that could give him that freedom. It wasn't the most opportune time, but he started working on his channel just two weeks after his son was born. Having no previous video editing experience, he had to learn the ins and outs of the platforms, all while coming up with compelling Rocket League content.
"I decided to stop playing in the morning, and start figuring out how to make videos," he explained. "I took the two hours in the morning that were reserved for Rocket League and started learning about editing, which also bled into my evenings. Every day, I'd work on videos in the morning, go to work all day, come home and spend time with my family, put the kids to bed, and then do more YouTube work until I crashed. I was going to bed at 12:30 a.m. and then waking up at 4 or 5. I was obsessed with what I was doing, even if that meant a crash here and there throughout the day."
That's when Brett became "FLuuMP," a name derived from an inside family joke. Even with his non-stop schedule, he says his wife was unbelievably supportive throughout the process even if she never thought a full-time job would materialize from it. Outside of his core family, he didn't want to tell anyone what he was doing. "I only wanted to be able to show them when I could prove it was viable," he said. "It wasn't going to relate to any of them, so I wanted to wait until it was successful to tell them about it."

That success came sooner than even Brett expected. Roughly a year after launching his channel, his income from YouTube began to eclipse his paycheck as an insurance agent. Making the jump to full-time content creator wasn't just scary because he was giving up a steady paycheck. He said that it was more difficult trying to explain to his employer why he was leaving.
"I live in a town with about 6,000 people. My career path is far from conventional," he said. "The people I worked with had no idea what content creation was. My boss made the announcement to the 7 or 8 people I worked with and it was met with some blank stares and questions. They were cool about it, but nobody understood it."
Even with his office job behind him, Brett is still juggling today. His 2 and 4-year-old kids are home throughout the day with Audra, and that's when he's creating most of his content. The key is keeping a schedule. He wakes up to work out, followed by breakfast and time with his kids. Then, it's off to edit in his bedroom, which converts into his office by day. Even though he's working, life doesn't stop around him. Sometimes the kids need to be tended to, or his wife needs a hand. Brett says that comes with the territory, and that he's glad he's able to be around rather than away at an office all day.
When your work is your hobby, it can be difficult to pull yourself away from it, and Brett says his biggest struggle is unplugging.
"It's so hard. I'm so bad at managing that. I've thought about deleting the YouTube Studio app that shows views and analytics. It's just a problem," Brett laughs. "It's 'checking the analytics.' That's what my wife and family always say to give me a hard time. 'Oh, he's checking the analytics.' When a video isn't performing well, it affects my whole mood. I'm trying to be better about it."
Brett gives his channel constant attention, which is how he's amassed a subscriber base that is approaching 250,000 and features several videos that have surpassed a million views. His style is broad, ranging from Rocket League Esports analysis, the game's history, and tutorials, mixed with some creative fun. He's even able to get his family into the spotlight. One video features his daughter learning how to play Rocket League, and Audra guest starred in a video from SunlessKhan where the wives of the popular YouTubers faced off in a 1v1 duel.
The continued growth of FLuuMP's channel is much like his development as a Rocket League player—it was a new world to him, but he put in the work and went all-in. That hard work earned him a shiny and respectable Grand Champ Rank and one of the most popular YouTube channels in the community.

It's hard to believe we're speeding into 2020, and it's even harder to believe that Rocket League is now approaching its fifth birthday! Throughout those years, the team here at Psyonix has endeavored to improve the core experience for both competition and customization, but we still believe the game has room for even more growth.
There's a lot coming to Rocket League in the remainder of 2019, with even more coming in the new year. Between new Season Rewards, Season 8 of the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS), Frosty Fest, and Rocket Pass 5, the future looks bright! Here's what you can expect to see for the rest of 2019 and beyond:
COMPETITIVE SEASON 12 REWARDS
We have something special in store for the end of Competitive Season 12. For the very first time, the rewards for the current season will be Universal Animated Decals!
Each rank will have its own unique Animated Decal that can be equipped to any customizable vehicle. Don't forget, you still have to complete placement matches in a Competitive Playlist and fulfill the appropriate Season Reward Level to earn rewards for Competitive Season 12 when it ends in December. Here are the Season 12 Decals in all their glory.
ORIGINAL DLC TO BE INCLUDED IN THE BASE VERSION OF ROCKET LEAGUE
Yes, you read that correctly. Later this year, all versions of Rocket League on all platforms will include the first three DLC Packs at no additional cost.
Following an update before the end of the year, everything included in the Supersonic Fury, Revenge of the Battle-Cars, and Chaos Run DLC Packs will be automatically available for all Rocket League owners. In other words, all owners of Rocket League will also have access to Dominus, Takumi, Scarab, Zippy, Ripper, and Grog.
As a result, those three DLCs will no longer be available for sale starting today. Rocket League Game of the Year Edition has also been removed from storefronts because it included those three DLCs. Players who purchased any of those DLCs on October 1, 2019 or afterwards will be eligible for a refund through your first-party platform. We'll announce the exact date for when you can expect to see this content added to the base game soon.
INVENTORY ARCHIVING
We know your inventories are growing, so we're adding the option to archive items to no longer appear in your main inventory tabs. An "Archive" tab will be added to the inventory screen that will house all of your archived items. With this new setup, you'll be able to more quickly navigate to the items you love!
Archiving will be added with the Blueprint Update later this year.
FROSTY FEST 2019
We hope you're enjoying Haunted Hallows featuring Stranger Things, but you can also look forward to a new installment of our Frosty Fest in-game winter event this December. Get ready to deck the halls and your favorite vehicles with the coolest customization items that celebrate this happy season! Frosty Fest 2019 will begin in mid-December and runs into the new year.

Key Features
Post-Game Party-Up
Easily partying-up with teammates following a match is about to get a whole lot easier. If your team synergy is off the charts with a player or team you met in an Online Match, you'll easily be able to party-up with them from the post-game menu. Simply select "Party-Up" after a match. Teammates who also select "Party-Up will then be grouped together with you for the next game. We hope you're able to make some new Rocket League friends with the new Party-Up feature!
Team-Colored Boost Meter
With an ever-growing collection of Painted Battle-Cars and Decals, we wanted to make it even easier to see exactly what color team you're on at the start of each game. That's why the October Update is bringing colored Boost Meters. The Boost Meter itself will remain the same, but the Meter's background will be blue or orange depending on your team color. The Boost Meter will also match custom team colors, and the Colorblind Mode option will apply to the boost meter, too!
Quickplay Button
There will soon be one less button press to get you exactly where you want to go. Following the update, you'll be able to select "Quickplay" and immediately start searching for a game in the last playlist you joined. New players will default to the 3v3 Standard Playlist when selecting Quickplay for the first time.
News Panel Refresh
As soon as you start up Rocket League following the October Update, you'll notice that the news section has received a new coat of paint. The grid of information that is usually found on the right side of the screen has been replaced with a new welcome screen that will highlight new events, DLC, or other major announcements. Once dismissed, it can be accessed again via a hidden News Tab on the right side of the screen.
New Esports Teams
Two new teams are being added to the Esports Shop rotation: Complexity and Spacestation Gaming! Look out for their new items in the Esports Shop following the update.
That's everything you can expect to find inside the October Update. Stay tuned for more info on Haunted Hallows this week!
Back in August, we announced our plans to remove paid, randomized Crates from Rocket League by the end of 2019. Today, we’re here to introduce what will replace them and how existing items will transfer to the new system.
INTRODUCING BLUEPRINTS
A game update in December will introduce a new system called Blueprints. After you play a match of Rocket League, you’ll have a chance to obtain a Blueprint; a new type of drop that will replace Crates. When you receive a Blueprint, it will show you exactly what item you can create from it, for a set price. Once they're in your inventory, Blueprints will allow you to pay to create the item it offers and receive it immediately; or you can leave it in your inventory and choose to create the item later.
Like the Crate items that preceded them, Blueprints can drop with special attributes like Painted, Certified, and Special Editions.
ITEM SHOP AND CREDITS
There's more than just Blueprints coming to Rocket League. In the same game update in December, we’ll be introducing a new rotating Item Shop. The Item Shop will offer a wide variety of content including new items, legacy Crate content you might have missed out on, and the long-awaited debuts of items like the Titanium White Dominus. Important note: Item Shop purchases will be bound to your account and cannot be traded.
Items from Blueprints and the Item Shop will be obtained by Credits, our new premium currency replacing Keys. You’ll use Credits to create items from Blueprints, upgrade to Rocket Pass Premium, and buy content from the Item Shop. Esports Tokens will be separate from Credits, and will be the only way to purchase items from the Esports Shop.
There is a lot more to reveal about the Item Shop and we will share more about it in the coming months.
THE GREAT CRATE CONVERSION
Once the new Blueprint system does go live, your Keys will automatically be converted into Credits the first time you log into Rocket League. Each remaining Crate you have will be converted into a Blueprint of the same series.
But before Blueprints go live later this year, the Vindicator Crate will come to Rocket League this Thursday, October 3. This is the final Crate and it will feature the new Sentinel Battle-Car and Neuro-Agitator Goal Explosion. Get a sneak peek at the Sentinel Battle-Car below:
Additional details about how other items will convert to the Blueprint system will be shared in the next few months.
TRADE-INS
Changes are coming to our Trade-In system that we want to message well in advance. When Blueprints go live and replace our paid Crates, we will also disable the ability to use paid content with our current Trade-In system.
More specifically, this means that items obtained from Blueprints, the Item Shop, or legacy content acquired from Crates cannot be traded in after these changes go live. We also plan to implement an updated inventory management feature that will allow you to archive items that you don't want to see in your active list of customization items.
This change will not impact your ability to trade in our free post-game drops.
IN SUMMARY...
We believe our new Blueprint system will give players more transparency in what they are purchasing. Of course, we will have much more to share about Blueprints and our new Item Shop as we get closer to release before the end of the year. For now, stay tuned for the Vindicator Crate, which will start dropping on October 3.
