Today we are updating SteamVR with a new built-in feature: SteamVR Media Player. This feature is currently in beta, and is available by opting into SteamVR Beta*.
SteamVR Media Player allows players to view local media files on any attached drive or network folder. Players can browse and preview files on the desktop using keyboard/mouse or in VR using tracked controllers. There is support for auto-detection of media layout and format, and common file naming conventions are observed.
4 formats - Virtual screen, 180°, 360°, and fisheye
We're excited to add this core functionality to SteamVR and will continue iterating on the feature set. Let us know what you think in the discussion boards.
For more details about this update, see the patch notes here.
To run SteamVR Media Player, make sure you are opted into SteamVR Beta*, open the SteamVR Status menu and select Run Media Player.
*To opt into SteamVR Beta, find SteamVR under Tools in your Steam Library. Right click to bring up Properties, then select 'beta' from the dropdown in the Betas tab.

The SteamVR Beta has been updated with the following changes:
General
New SteamVR Media Player [Beta] - See below
Fixed a compatibility issue with certain USB drivers. In some cases this would prevent controllers from tracking wirelessly unless they were plugged in directly to USB first.
4 Formats: Virtual flat screen, 180 degree hemisphere, 360 degree sphere, and fisheye with any fov
Built-in file browser in the desktop window and HMD window
Basic auto-detect of layout and format for videos
Common file naming conventions are auto-detected, so existing content will load with the correct layout and format settings
Each file’s settings are saved in a local database on your hard drive, so once you choose the correct layout and format, it will stick for future viewings of that file even if you move the file around on your hard drive. The database only stores a hash of the filename, file size, and file date as the database key fields for basic user privacy along with the custom layout and format settings.
Optional live preview on desktop window
Optional “remember last folder” and other common file browser settings
Supports all Windows 10 systems and most Windows 7 systems
Keyboard/mouse and tracked controller support in headset

Hello SteamVR community! We have a bunch of updates to SteamVR Home for you today.
What was Beta is now Public
All of the great features we added to SteamVR Beta a few weeks ago are now available on SteamVR publicly. This means all players can now:
Customize their environment with screenshots and artwork from their favorite games
Add SteamVR panels to any environment to launch games, join public rooms, and interact with friends
Decorate their space with Game Trophies to showcase their achievement progress and launch games
Have an easier time customizing their environment, with improvements to the way props and furniture are positioned and placed in-world
Enjoy Steam Audio integration with more immersive audio
We think these features will make the SteamVR Home experience more fun and customizable, and we’re excited that all players now have access. For more about all these new features, see this post.
Halloween Hats
Halloween is almost upon us and to celebrate we've borrowed some spooooooky (one might even say Mildly Disturbing) masks from Team Fortress 2. For a limited time, players can find and unlock these scary paper bags in the weekly geocaching quest. Good luck!
New Collectibles
We have a great new set of SteamVR Collectibles for players to unlock. Play the titles below to unlock new props and avatars to use in SteamVR Home:
Duck Season
Google Earth
Rez
Battlezone
Loco Dojo
RacketNX
KatanaX
Pierhead Arcade
Gorn
OVERTURN
Smashbox Arena
That's it for this update - let us know what you think in the discussion boards. We'll see you in SteamVR.
