We're continuing to share backstories of Divination Cards created by our supporters. This time we spoke with Quelex about the story behind the Imperfect Memories, a Divination Card from the Siege of the Atlas expansion.
I have played games like Path of Exile since Diablo 1 came out when I was young. I've always enjoyed coming up with different ideas and testing how well they will work. I stumbled upon the website for PoE during its closed beta and thought it looked cool (especially as a person who loves Final Fantasy X's passive tree) but I didn't know anyone that played it. When the open beta came around my friend and I finally gave it a shot and we have been hooked and played every league since.
As with many other cards, the idea for the reward came first. I've always felt it was important to have special mods tied to content (like Incursion or Delve) to keep that content relevant to crafting. Synthesis league added a ton of stats and some you can't find anywhere else. I especially liked +% Attributes from jewelry as an implicit since I love playing Whispering Ice. So why not a 3 implicit synthesised jewelry so that you can try to hit at least one of those chase modifiers?
But there was a snag: You can't make a card for an item that can't drop in Standard. Synthesis was one of my favorite leagues and for over a year it looked like nothing from it would be coming back so the idea was shelved. With Echoes of The Atlas, synthesised and fractured items returned to the core game and so now the card I wanted could be made!
For the theme I wanted to connect something from my life to Synthesis. Synthesis League was a personal favorite, but it had its flaws. I thought back to how my then girlfriend (and now wife!) and I had been apart while she was at college a couple hours away. It was hard being apart but it made the times we did get to spend together on the beautiful campus memorable. Looking back it's easy to gloss over the bad parts. So I settled on the theme of nostalgia and the rest of the card came together quickly at that point. The art comes from a combination of the synthesis decay effect around the edges and a picture of a spot on the campus featuring a very assertive pilgrim goose that always wandered the campus with its duck friends in tow.
Thank you GGG for an amazing game, for adding my card, and for bringing more Synthesis content back to the game! (Synthesis 2 league when?) It's been wonderful to see other contributors bringing more opportunities for people to get synthesised items and maps so that part of the game can live on and be more accessible. And for all of those who made it to the end and have turned in a set: I'm sorry you got resists and mana regen. I'm sure you'll get an extra maximum power charge next time.

Many of our supporters (and winners of competitions!) have had the opportunity to design a Divination Card with us. A lot of them come with an amazing story or hidden meanings and we wanted to share these with the community! We talked with IronVsWild who designed the "The One That Got Away" Divination Card to learn the story behind their design.
Not many things manage to hold my attention for long periods of time. When I find something that does, I will gladly pour thousands of hours and hundreds of dollars into it over time. If I'm going to be interested in something for that many hours, I want to experience the best it has to offer.
To understand this card, you have to understand the path that led me to it. I honestly have no idea how I started playing Path of Exile. I've never played on Steam and I don't have any friends that play. But somehow, I ended up here during Legacy league. After a few days, I was quickly overwhelmed, and didn't return until Harbinger. Then, I started learning the game on my first character, an unascended Duelist that used Frost Wall and Flicker Strike - without generating frenzy charges. It didn't go well.
I was always into testing the limits of the game. Over time I got into crafting and mastered that system, making crazy items that I thought were interesting - Even if they weren't always good. During Harvest, the high end of crafting was pretty lackluster. Everything that could be made already was, so I decided to play SSF instead. My friend mentioned that someone had built a ladder that tracked unique tab completion in SSF, so I started collecting uniques to get on the ladder. Several months and thousands of hours later. I became the first and only person to collect every unique in SSF. I wrote about the experience on Reddit.
I had purchased a divination card several years ago at this point, and decided I wanted it to be about my accomplishment, but I just couldn't think of anything that fit. Heist came and went, and I spent a few months collecting all of those uniques too, except for Replica Bated Breath. I wrote about that experience on Reddit as well.
One day it hit me. Replica Bated Breath was a Fishing Unique with special drop requirements that nobody knew. It was a unique that nobody knew how to get, and I had the perfect solution. It was the one unique that got away, so that became the name of the card. I decided to hold a contest to design the rest of the card for the players who would appreciate it the most - Players that study Path of Exile's Fishing easter egg!
People offered prizes, there were special awards for various types of submissions, and everyone had an amazing time. There were so many good ideas for the art that I ended up combining a few of my favorites. My one request was that the person in the art was the same one as The Old Man card. I saw the flavor text early in the contest, and I knew it was the one. The feeling you get in the days after you FINALLY finish something you've been working on for a long time is odd. You feel hollow inside, aimless, despite your achievements. The flavor text captures this feeling perfectly.
The card was introduced with one of the lowest drop rates of all Divination Cards in Path of Exile, which was expected since it provided the rarest unique in the game. Despite that, I've received dozens of messages from other collectors thanking me for making it. They tell me about their attempts to farm for it. Some of them have even completed it! Nobody wants to grind for something without knowing how it drops, but grinding a rare drop for weeks on end? That's the lifeblood of this game.
I haven't played Path of Exile since I finished collecting those uniques, but it wasn't my last breath. My final goal wasn't completed. I'm eagerly awaiting Hardmode, so that I can savor life's missing pieces all over again.
Since our Path of Exile: Sentinel livestream reveal, we've been releasing microtransactions that are quite different from what we've made in the past. Today, we'd love to hear your feedback and ideas so we can continue to make new and exciting cosmetic effects for you in the future.
In case you've missed it, we have recently been experimenting with new types of microtransactions and new ways of packaging them together.
The Maroider skin, a regular microtransaction in the store. Plenty more standalone microtransactions like this are scheduled in the coming weeks.
From our point of view, these experiments were pretty successful! The microtransactions were a lot of fun to make, have been selling well, and have solved several issues we struggled with like how the previous mystery boxes had duplicates and how they generally feel a lot more rewarding now.
But we'd love to hear your perspective. If you buy and enjoy microtransactions, tell us what you think! What do you think of the new supporter pack structure? The new mystery box without duplicates? Did you buy the new Vault Pass or are you waiting until you have completed enough maps? What has been your favourite micro so far? What do you want to see more of? What do you want to see less of? Do you have any crazy ideas you'd like to see become reality?
In our recent Sentinel Supporter Packs we introduced two new hideouts, the Ghost-lit Graveyard Hideout and Timekeeper's Hideout.
The Ghost-lit Graveyard is a hideout where you can control the colour of its torches. It also has six exclusive hideout decorations. In the Timekeeper's Hideout you can use the chronosphere to change the time of day from dawn to noon to dusk to night. It also comes with two exclusive hideout decorations.
For today's news post we've filmed a walkthrough of these hideouts to give you an idea of what to expect. Watch it below:
Both hideouts are exclusive to the Sentinel Supporter Packs and will be available for purchase until the end of the Sentinel League.
We can't wait to see the hideouts you create based on these new ones. Thanks for your support!
We have released a new version of Kirac's Vault Pass that contains unique item skin rewards that are exclusive to this league! Each of these rewards visually interacts with gameplay in some way and will leave the store forever when the Sentinel League ends. After purchasing the pass, you can earn its rewards in the Atlas endgame by completing map objectives. Check out this post for more information!
Check out this video to see the rewards you can earn:
Purchase your pass, unlock access to Kirac's Vault, and complete Atlas objectives to earn up to eight exclusive unique item skins. You'll earn your first reward upon entering the Karui Shores, after defeating Kitava. You'll earn additional rewards by completing sets of map bonus objectives while exploring your Atlas. In Path of Exile: Sentinel, we removed both Vinktar's Square and Doryani's Machinarium from the Atlas, so if you complete the bonus objectives of all 115 maps, you'll have earned all eight available rewards!
These unique item skins don't just provide an alternate appearance for popular end-game items, they also visually interact with your gameplay in new ways. For example, the Intravenous Mageblood skin drains enabled Magic Utility Flasks directly into your bloodstream. The Glacial Hyrri's Ire skin causes enemies chilled by your projectiles to become skewered with shards of crystalline ice. The Mystic Void Battery skin changes the look of your Power Charges and the force within your Void Battery grows as your maximum number of Power Charges increases. To be clear, the unique item skins you can earn are entirely cosmetic and do not convey any gameplay advantage. You still need to acquire the actual unique item they apply to.
To purchase your pass, press M in-game to access the store, then click the Kirac's Vault banner.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I purchase the Pass and track my progress through it?
On the Atlas screen, there's a new Kirac's Vault Pass icon at the top left. Clicking that will let you buy the pass, see the rewards and travel to Kirac's Vault.
How do I claim my rewards?
The Pass has a progress bar that tracks how many bonus objectives of maps on the atlas you have completed. Once you have unlocked a cosmetic unique item skin, you can click a button on the Pass screen to travel directly to Kirac's Vault, where a chamber containing that reward will unlock for you to claim.
Once claimed, the cosmetic unique item skins are stored in your microtransaction stash, alongside your existing microtransactions.
Do I get anything right away for buying the Pass?
Yes. The first reward, the Phantasmal Rumi's Concoction skin, is available to claim as soon as you purchase the Pass, providing you are able to access the Karui Shores (at the end of the campaign) in order to enter Kirac's Vault.
As you have likely already completed a lot of map bonus objectives in the Sentinel leagues by now, there are probably more cosmetic skins that will immediately unlock after you purchase the Pass.
Is this pay-to-win in any way?
No. Access to Kirac's Vault and its cosmetic skins offer no gameplay advantage over other players.
Do I need to have bought the Pass before I complete my Atlas? Is there a penalty for just waiting until near the end of the league and buying it then?
No. The Pass costs the same amount regardless of how many objectives you have already completed, and the relevant rewards will unlock instantly if you buy the Pass after completing objectives. There's no penalty for delaying your purchase until later in the league, though you'll need to purchase it before the league ends.
I'd like to earn some microtransactions without having to pay. Is there a free Pass?
We recently bolstered Path of Exile's existing challenge system with additional free microtransactions that can be earned by completing challenges.
Can I pay more money to unlock rewards that I have not been able to unlock through gameplay?
You can't pay to unlock rewards (other than the first one, which comes with the Pass). Everyone you see with one of the unique item skins from Kirac's Vault will have completed the bonus objectives required to earn it.
Does the Pass give you the unique items that you need in order to be able to wear the skins?
No. Kirac's Vault provides you with no form of gameplay advantage or power. You must separately find the unique items that correspond to your cosmetic skins in order to be able to wear them.
Is the Pass available for Standard players?
No. At this stage it is only available to players in the current challenge league because many Standard players can instantly unlock their whole Atlas by completing a single map.
Will I have access to my cosmetic unique item skins in Standard or future leagues?
Yes. Any skins earned during this league will be available account-wide and can be equipped to any character you make in any league, as long as it uses that unique item.
Can I equip these unique item skins to other unique items than the one they are intended for?
No. They are designed to visually augment the special properties of the unique item that they reskin. For example, the Sanguine Arakaali's Fang skin summons demonic spiders. This wouldn't make sense to apply to other unique daggers because those daggers don't have the ability to summon spiders.
Are the Pass or its cosmetic unique item skins available after this league ends?
No. The Pass can only be purchased during this league and its cosmetic unique item skins are exclusive to this Pass. They will not be available again. If you want to have them in your collection forever, you must purchase the Pass this league and complete the objectives for any skins that you want.
In the future we may release different cosmetic unique item skins for the same unique items.
What happens if I'm playing in multiple Sentinel leagues? Which league does the Pass track progress from?
The pass tracks your highest Atlas progress from any Sentinel league you are playing in (including private leagues based on Sentinel).
How did you choose these unique items to reskin?
This is a Pass for end-game characters who are able to complete the bonus objectives of their Atlas, so we picked iconic "meta" uniques that top players are likely to use in their builds. We also wanted to experiment with these being more than just simple reskins - each one has special visual effects that interact with the core theme of each unique item.
These skins are exclusive to this Pass, but we will continue to pick iconic and powerful unique items to make skins for in future Passes (which could include additional skins for some of the unique items covered by this Pass).
Will the Kirac's Vault Pass be released on Console platforms?
Absolutely. Due to certification it may lag behind the PC version by a little bit, depending on the platform, but will be out soon!
To purchase your pass, press M in-game to access the store, then click the Kirac's Vault banner.
