If you've ever been stuck in a Labyrinth, you may have had a hand from SuitSizeSmall who operates and updates the Lab notes on PoELab! Continuing our series of interviews with community streamers, we took a moment to chat with SuitSizeSmall about his cosplay, running the Labyrinth and life outside of streaming.

Hi SuitSizeSmall, thank you for taking part in the interview! For those who may not be familiar with you, can you please introduce yourself?
Thank you for inviting me to be interviewed! I’m SuitSizeSmall, I primarily operate and update the Lab notes for PoELab. I stream Path of Exile and occasionally other games such as souls-likes, metroidvanias and crafting/factory games. I also make cosplays semi-regularly.

When did you first get into Path of Exile?
I started playing Path of Exile around August or September of 2014.

What one thing caught your attention in the beginning and what was one thing that kept you coming back?
The primary thing that caught my attention was the sheer volume of skill gems, passives and items. I moved over from Diablo 3 so seeing this much variety and potential builds really got my attention. This is also the reason I keep coming back. I like making and trying out different builds. Granted this causes problems where I always end up making a bunch of level 70 characters and never commit but it is still fun to try out different skills.

Are there any highlights from your time playing Path of Exile that stand out in your memory?
Back in Incursion I had a triple Hatred Watcher's Eye drop that I still have in Standard. This was also during the peak time of Glacial Cascade Mines so the build got me into farming Uber Elder. The more recent highlights were my Oshabi and Maven cosplays. They got a lot of traction and support despite being thrown together in a week. And of course going to ExileCon was great. I had a lot of fun meeting everyone, I just wish I was less anxious and stayed out more.

Do you have a favourite build from your time playing Path of Exile?
When Ascendancy first released Elementalist Fire Trap was very satisfying to play due to how Elementalist would proliferate ignites and shocks. A little time after that Voltaxic Spark was also very fun due to being reflect immune and having great clear. Finally my recent favourite build has been Guardian Summon Holy Relic. Fairly tanky, good enough clear and can boss reliably.

Which was your favourite league or expansion?
I’m a little biased but the Ascendancy expansion has to be one of my favourites simply because it added the Labyrinth. Additionally, I really enjoyed Harvest as it was the first time I felt I was slowly improving each of my items through crafting rather than accumulating a mass of currency to maybe make a new item.

When did you first start streaming? How did you get into it?
I started streaming probably around April or May of 2016. After some encouragement from the PoELab website team and guild I started streaming my daily Lab runs of mapping out the Labyrinth. Eventually I grew more comfortable streaming content outside the Labyrinth as well as other games.

What can people expect from your stream and schedule?
You caught me at an unfortunate time as I recently started another semester in university. Normally I stream every day, mapping out all the Lab notes when the Labyrinth resets, 7pm CST. However, with school going on and the nature of Path of Exile being a large time sink I’m currently on a bit of a stream break. I do plan on doing some streams on the weekend if I have time, these will be a bit shorter and might be of other games and occasionally cosplay content. I don’t really have a schedule for these, it's just if I have time and am in the mood.

What were you doing before you started streaming?
So when I started the Lab notes and streaming I was in my first semesters of community college. I have since been going to a regular University studying Mathematics. Unfortunately, my life has primarily been school and it has been regularly extended due to changing fields of study, problems with pre-requisites and inability to take a full set of courses due to mental stress.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of streaming?
I’ve been gaming most my life and this continues off stream. Recently I’ve been getting more and more into cosplay. Learning how to make costume accessories, how to sew, wig styling, makeup and photography.

You've made some awesome Path of Exile cosplays over the years! Which one was your favourite and why?
As previously mentioned I really liked what I managed to pull off for Oshabi and Maven in such a short period of time. Also those costumes included one of my favorite props to use which was UV contact lenses which is how I made my eyes glow. I also had a lot of fun putting together the budget Vorana armor for my expedition cosplay. The 1 week constraint has been difficult to work around but it has shown me what I can manage to do if I plan out my time.

How has your life changed from before you were streaming until now?
Surprising a lot has both changed and not changed. As mentioned, due to a variety of reasons I’m still going to university so not much has changed there. But I do plan my time around Labyrinth reset a lot so my time management is a bit more strict. Streaming and PoELab is more or less my first job and having a source of income has been incredibly impactful.

Is there anything you'd like to see more of in the streaming community?
Taking your time when playing PoE. It is easy to feel like you are “behind” when seeing people get to maps in 24 hours or have already killed Maven before you’ve done a T16. However everyone plays at a different pace and enjoys different parts of PoE. Take your time and don’t worry if you are “behind”.

What drew you to running the Labyrinth? Do you have a favourite build specifically curated for the Labyrinth?
The main draw to Labyrinth to me was how different you had to plan a farming character and how strong simply having knowledge of the Lab could be. It was interesting to focus a build much more on moving quickly and smoothly and somehow having enough damage to fight Izaro. Defense could somewhat be neglected if you knew how to navigate the traps very well, or fast enough that they wouldn’t damage you. Additionally Izaro has fairly well telegraphed attacks so with enough practice it is easy to do the fight with low defense.

The Lab build I used for years was a Toxic Rain Pathfinder. It was incredibly low budget, normally less than an Exalted Orb to get started and it would have around 400% movement speed. This was a great starter Labyrinth build for new Lab runners and league starters however with flask changes in 3.15 hit the build much harder than anticipated. Now I’m back to an old school Leap Slammer with Ancestral Warchief Totems.

What's one tip you'd give for new and old players alike for getting through the Labyrinth?
Practice is the key to doing well in Lab. Knowing the Izaro fight, room layouts and trap layouts help tremendously in getting through Lab. If you don’t get through a Lab your first time it's ok, the layout is the same so try again and be patient (unless you are in Hardcore, sorry).

Are there any up and coming streamers that you'd like to shine a spotlight on?
I tend to lurk in channels a lot but my usual go to’s are AphelionPoE, KittenCatNoodle, Arkaynan, piebypie, BrittleKnee, Octavian0 and Smashley. Additionally, Vanhilla and Denipon are two new streamers I recently came across. The fantastic artist NieNie has started streaming as well.

Do you have any projects on the horizon you'd like to talk about?
As mentioned, I’m on a bit of a streaming break as I focus on school. But I plan on doing some sporadic streams. Best to just follow me on Twitter to see if anything happens streaming related. I recently started a Fanhouse where I post more cosplay and makeup focused content. With October around the corner I’ve been working on my Halloween costume. It isn’t Path of Exile themed but it is spicier than what I usually do so I hope everyone enjoys it nonetheless. If time permits I would also like to do some additional costumes/makeup looks throughout October.

Thank you so much for participating in the interview! If you'd like to follow SuitSizeSmall, you can do so on Twitter and Twitch.

It's that time again - announcement of announcements! In today's news, we'll give you an overview of what to expect in the coming weeks as we prepare for the launch of our 3.16 expansion at the end of October.

Later this week, we'll share a follow-up news post that confirms the exact dates of both the 3.16 expansion announcement and its launch. The announcement will take place via Twitch at http://www.twitch.tv/pathofexile with Twitch Drops enabled! While we've revealed some of 3.16's details on recent community podcasts, there's still a lot to uncover. Like all Path of Exile expansions, it contains a new challenge league, skills, items, balance changes and more.

Next week, we're planning to start sharing a few minor teasers of things coming in this expansion, like items and divination cards to whet your appetite for what's coming. We're also planning to share many of our planned balance changes ahead of the announcement, including changes to ailments, defences, flasks and more.

As we mentioned in recent podcasts, we're planning to reduce the number of maps and regions in the Atlas. While the details of this are still to come, it's worth noting that this will affect existing Atlases for players in permanent leagues. If you're playing in these leagues, please keep an eye out for a coming news post that indicates what will happen to your watchstones, sextants etc.

There's a lot to talk about, and while this post didn't reveal much, we'll unveil everything in due time.

We recently took some time to chat with streamer and long time player Kripparrian, to find out some of his favourite Path of Exile memories and what his life is like outside of gaming!

Hi Kripparrian, thanks so much for joining us for this interview! For those who may not be familiar with you yet, can you please introduce yourself?
Hey there! I'm Kripp, and I've been playing video games all of my life, starting from when I was 3 years old. I've been fortunate enough to be able to make a living off of it since 2012, and luckily Path of Exile has been part of my gaming routine for most of those years.

We owe you a huge deal of thanks for helping to popularise Path of Exile in its early days. What is your favourite memory of your earliest days playing Path of Exile?
My favorite part about PoE is to successfully create a new character and build that has not been done before. In the early days this was a much harder task, especially on Hardcore, as there were far fewer ways to reach acceptable levels of survivability and damage. My proudest moment of the early days in Path of Exile was successfully building my CI burning Discharge Templar.

What one thing caught your attention in the beginning and what one thing kept you coming back?
It always sparks my urge to play again when a new league is announced. I always play a new build that I've created, and I love to try to make it as strong as possible with the consideration of all the new mechanics and build options that come with each major update.

What is your overall favourite build from your entire Path of Exile playtime?
Besides, of course, the burning Discharge from the early days, I really enjoyed my super-budget Poison Blade Flurry + Abyssal Cry Berserker I made for Breach League. It was a very fast character with incredible damage, taking full advantage of the double dip damage over time mechanics, all while doing it on a budget from scaling with Hidden Potential and the use of blue items.

You recently played a Path of Exile private league with item scarcity mods. How did you find that experience?
In Delirium I made a private league in which only white and unique items could drop. I wanted to do this because I loved the Delirium mechanic, but hated having to run back through the entire map a second time just to pick up loot. One quirk about this league was that the items dropped from the Delirium mirror ignored the private league drop restriction and it became the only way to get things like veiled modifiers. This was fantastic as it made what were normally the worst Delirium loot options the most desirable as I slowly and painstakingly worked my way to being able to craft rare veiled mods on my gear. Overall, I preferred to play the game this way, and if not for the cumbersome experience of managing a private league, probably would otherwise play it over a normal league.

What are your favourite memories from attending ExileCon and visiting New Zealand?
The best part about ExileCon was to finally meet and hang out with the many Path of Exile content creators I had played with and have watched for many years. Together with my wife and business partner, Rania, we took full advantage of our trip to New Zealand and got to see many sights. New Zealand seemed like a magical place where modern society, nature, history, and culture all co-exist in perfect balance.

Which was your favourite Path of Exile league or expansion?
It's hard to think of a league that truly stands out as I had a good time in so many. Out of the recent leagues, I quite enjoyed Ultimatum as it always seemed worthwhile to play through the new mechanic and it felt rewarding each time.

What one thing would you change about Path of Exile if you were in charge?
I would make it a priority to re-do old mechanics and create new ones while being mindful of how many clicks need to be performed during play. Loot vacuums or pets and optimized inventory/stash management would be at the top of that list.

A long time ago, you famously died to a twinned Alira map boss that used corpse explosion. Does this still haunt you or have people largely forgotten?
People certainly have not forgotten this moment! During the Zizaran's Gauntlet for the 3.14 patch, I funded a bounty for someone to die in this exact manner, and while it was eventually claimed, it was actually very challenging as her corpse explosion constantly hits other corpses and you are more likely to just die to her attacks.

What made you want to start streaming?
After making gaming videos on YouTube for 2 years (for no money), their policy changed to where you could now monetize gaming content. This lined up nicely with the release of Diablo 3 so I made a team to take on the game as hardcore as possible, and they suggested that we stream our experience on Twitch.

What were you doing before you started?
Before I was a streamer, I was working as a computer tech and played games in my free time.

How has your life changed from before you were streaming until now?
Well, I have been streaming most of my adult life at this point, so as one would expect, life is entirely different. Gaming is now the job, but we have done well over the years, so we have been able to afford stability and nice things.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of streaming?
Travelling with Rania, playing with our dogs, watching every show and movie Marvel puts out.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone trying to make a career out of streaming?
You should always begin streaming as a hobby, while managing your expectations. Nobody should begin streaming with an expectation of making a career out of it. If you enjoy streaming, and your viewers steadily increase, you can consider making a career out of it then.

What's the biggest difference between the experience of being a content creator many years ago compared to now?
Content creation has become very competitive and heavily managed these days. We have seen a lot more sketchy things happen in recent years, such as viewbotting. Thankfully, these notions don't seem to apply to Path of Exile's content creators. I feel this game is quite blessed with the quality of content creators that have supported the game tirelessly for so many years.

Are there any up-and-coming streamers that you'd like to shine a spotlight on?
I rarely get any chance to watch other streamers these days. The closest thing to up-and-coming streamers that I've watched lately include already established and fairly popular PoE streamers such as Steelmage, Mathil, Ziz, Nugiyen, Ghazzy, etc.

Do you have any projects on the horizon you'd like to talk about?
We have been trying to do weeklong streamathons, streaming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during major content launches. Our first attempt at this was fairly successful during the 3.15 launch for PoE. We are excited to try to keep this going for future patches and games.

Thank you so much for participating in the interview! If you'd like to follow Kripparrian, you can do so on Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch. Also, don't forget that you can support both Kripparrian and the development of Path of Exile by buying microtransactions from his Nexus page!

Continuing our series of interviews with community streamers, we took some time to chat with Velyna, giving us some insight into what streaming life is like and other behind the scenes info!

Hi Velyna, thank you for taking part in the interview! Please introduce yourself.
Hey I'm Velyna or Vel, a big time gamer from Ontario Canada.

When did you first get into Path of Exile?
It was 9 years ago now. I was looking for a new ARPG to play and it was either PoE's closed beta or continue with Diablo 3, I chose the former and have been firmly indoctrinated ever since.

What one thing caught your attention in the beginning and what one thing kept you coming back?
The skill tree. I have never seen anything like it and it makes me feel like the build possibilities are endless.

Are there any highlights from your time playing Path of Exile that stand out in your memory?
You know there are so many things that stick out in my mind, like I'll never forget the first thing I 6L'd. It was back when people used to do 6L lotteries in global chat. The old "5000 fusings currently used if your donated fusings 6L <insert item here> I'll give 30ex." I was just going for a 5L on a triple ele dmg thicket bow for elemental hit and I actually hit the 6. I couldn't believe my eyes. I still have the bow and wow it's stats are so bad but at the time it was amazing. Also this is going to sound wild but I always enjoyed the community around master rota's. You often saw the same people and they're working towards the same goals. Everyone knew the etiquette and there was a real sense of community there in global 820.

Do you have a favourite build?
I know this sounds so generic but Cyclone. I've always been a huge fan of it even in the days before lockstep when you were doing /oos every 2 seconds. With the change to it in Legion it made it the most fluid skill to play in Path of Exile. Also with CoC and CwC cyclone can just become more of a support/move skill than the main skill making feel better than other CoC and CwC skills (plz don't use this as a reason to nerf cyclone). What can I say? I'm a Slayer main.

Which expansion has been your favourite so far?
Somehow this is the hardest question to answer, my first thought was Breach because that was my first time experiencing major map density extravaganza which started the map density addiction but Delirium could really take it to another level even with the backtracking.

What's one thing every Path of Exile player should hear?
Your builds might fail and that's ok, not all builds are meant to succeed. Like you can make them but they might just feel bad. Also don't be afraid to ask for some build advice or go to https://poe.ninja/ to see how other people are building a certain skill to give you good ideas. In Path of Exile, often 3+ brains looking at a build is better than just 1.

When did you first start streaming? How did you get into it?
I started streaming almost 3 years ago this October. It's actually surprising how long I've been doing it for now. You know it was always a dream of mine to play video games as a career but other than being in the industry itself I never thought I'd have the opportunity to do it. I had always been interested in the idea of streaming but never really thought I had that thing that good streamers have that keeps you engaged and I always get very immersed in the game I'm playing, so when I started having health issues a few people close to me said I should give it a shot and eventually they convinced me with a, "What's the worst that can happen?"

What can people expect from your stream and schedule?
They can expect to always have a good time, a lot of laughs, some quality game play and sometimes you learn some things too. I'm usually working on some build to see if it's not just good on paper since I like to create builds that feel good for people that are maybe new to the game, or haven't been able to progress much yet, so you will often find me working on that. I stream Monday to Friday from 11am to let's say 6pm EST.

What were you doing before you started streaming?
Well I used to work at a bank just climbing my way up the corporate ladder and then I started to get a lot of health issues both with mental health and chronic pain so I had to leave my bank job and ended up a hermit who played games to pass the time.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of streaming?
Well I still love to game off-stream but I'm also a huge nerd for scifi and fantasy books and other media. I also love history, and trash tv shows (one uses my brain the other shuts it off lol).

Animals are also a huge part of my life. You will often see my cats on stream and I more recently have been getting more into fitness and biking and my city has some really killer bike and hiking trails so I try to get out when I'm not working on stream stuff and while the weather is still good.

Recently, you did a charity stream for SickKids. Would you be able to tell us how the stream went and more about who SickKids are and why you chose them?
The stream went better than I could have even imagined, my community is the best and we ended up raising $1,640 for SickKids! They've been on my radar for a long time since my best friend who's like a sister to me has some serious health issues of her own and SickKids has been her primary care so I know the kind of work they do and I've always wanted to support them and now I had the opportunity and the platform to do so.

SickKids is a pediatric hospital and one of the top 5 research hospitals in Canada. They use innovative medicines and techniques to treat children and help families. We had donation goals for face painting me as a Vaal Orb, breaking eggs on my head and deleting a ton of expensive legacy items which I think people really enjoyed and it was 100% worth it!

How has your life changed from before you were streaming until now? What role has streaming played in that transition?
My life is so immensely different from before. Before I went from just keeping to myself in my house, hermitting to sharing a part of my life and my gaming experiences with people. I've made friends from streaming, I was able to spotlight a charity that means a lot to me, to take care of my 13 yr old senior kitten who got old age diabetes and adopt a junkyard cat to be friends or frenemies with him and bring some joy to people's lives even if it's just a couple of laughs 5 days a week. It's been a lot of self-inflicted stress and has turned me from a lurking wallflower to someone who is more open to show who I am and live in the moment, however ridiculous sometimes.

Is there anything you'd like to see more of in the streaming community?
I guess I would like to see less analytics, more fun. A lot of times people might choose a build based on a streamer saying it's 5% better than some other build but numbers aren't everything, like just have fun with it.

Do you have any advice for people who are looking to make their own career out of streaming?
It is really difficult to get into streaming as a career, a lot of it is long hours, being able to criticize your own work and making sure you get your content out there. You have to know your audience or know what they're looking for, and trying to figure out what people are looking for is maddening. You can't half ass it, you have to give it your full ass and still there's an amount of luck involved.

Are there any up and coming streamers that you'd like to shine a spotlight on?
I definitely want to shout out my boy Arkaynan and AphelionPOE.

Do you have any projects on the horizon you'd like to talk about?
Next month, I'll be doing something special for my stream anniversary! I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. Last year we had a lot of fun doing twitch karaoke and it was utterly absurd and I definitely full assed it with my terrible voice. Who knows what this year might bring. Hope to see you there!

Thank you so much for participating in the interview! If you'd like to follow Velyna, you can do so on Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch. Also, don't forget that you can support both Velyna and the development of Path of Exile by buying microtransactions from her Nexus page!
