On August 15th, Poland celebrates Polish Armed Forces Day, a national holiday dedicated to all branches of the country’s armed forces. A large military parade takes place on Warsaw’s main square, and concerts and public festivities are held throughout the country.

Lanovski’s P-47M-1-RE is temporarily available for Golden Eagles!
In honor of this holiday, we’re temporarily bringing back the P-47M-1-RE in the camouflage of Witold Lanovski, a Polish pilot in the service of the US Army Air Force, which is available to purchase for 6,090 Golden Eagles.

When: From today until August 19th (09:00 GMT).
Where: USA > Aviation > Premium vehicles.

About this aircraft
  • Lanovski's P-47M-1-RE is a real king of high altitudes! It easily gains altitude and maintains excellent speed there, and maneuverability and ease of control help it to emerge a frequent winner in attacks. 8 x 12.7 mm M2 Browning machine guns with a decent amount of ammunition will not leave the enemy with any chance. Up to 2 x 1000 lb bombs and HVAR rockets make this aircraft good in ground battles too.

Get the “Emblem of the Polish Land Forces” decal!

When: Until August 19th (09:00 GMT).

On the 14th August 1974, the Panavia Tornado took to the skies for the first time. In 2024, this multinational, multirole aircraft marks 50 years since its first flight and still flies today with the Luftwaffe, Aeronautica Militare and Royal Saudi Air Force. The Royal Air Force, previously being one of the 3 original operators, retired their last Tornados in 2019.

In War Thunder, you can find the Tornado in several variants in the German, British and Italian trees. To mark this occasion, we’ve prepared a special commemorative decal and a discount on the Tornado IDS WTD 61 Pack in the Gaijin store.

Today, we’ll be talking about changes to the post-pen effects for APHE shells used by ground vehicles that we plan to introduce into the game. We’re ready to show you what we have planned here, and at the end of this news post you can participate in voting for or against — whether there’ll be changes or not all depends on your vote. Let’s take a look!

Preserving fragments in the head part of the shell
First off, we’d like to tell you about a change that we consider necessary and will be implemented into the game without any vote. This change relates to maintaining the integrity of an APHE shell’s head after armor penetration. When an APHE shell explodes, its warhead is not subject to significant fragmentation and can cause substantially greater damage than the scattering fragments of the case and base.

Fragments of a 75mm M61 shell after it exploded. Note how intact the warhead is

The fragment of the shell’s warhead is significant in mass, can penetrate armor of considerable thickness, and at the same time also form secondary fragments when penetrating armor. This change will allow the warhead to better hit enemy crew members located behind internal partitions, such as the engine compartment bulkhead, as well as other modules along the shell’s flight trajectory that cannot be penetrated by small fragments generated from the shell exploding.

Increasing secondary fragments and high explosive damage
Due to a number of technical reasons, secondary fragments from APHE shells differ and are worse compared to fragments from regular, solid AP shells. When reworking fragmentation fields, we’ll enhance the secondary fragments of APHE shells to the level of solid AP shells.

The high-explosive damage from APHE shells will remain — it causes relatively little damage, affects the crew and modules inside the tank and has a damage zone in the form of a sphere around the detonation point of the shell. The diameter of the damage sphere of high-explosive damage is noticeably smaller than the scattering zone of secondary fragments.

Implementing fragment areas
Here are the changes that we’d like you to vote on, whether they’re introduced or not will be determined by community vote: scattering sectors of fragments from APHE shells.

When a shell explodes, three main fragmentation areas are formed, shown in the image below:
  • The remainder of the shell’s head and its fragments.
  • Fragments from the base of the shell.
  • Fragments from all sides of the shell (the case).

When a shell explodes inside of a tank or armored vehicle, the shell’s head acts as a small solid AP round and may penetrate more internal modules. Alongside this, smaller fragments from the shell casing form a fragmentation cone and hit the crew and modules around the explosion point. We plan to implement both of these to the game.

*Translation (Pic.113): Scattering of the APHE shell fragments on impact

At the moment, we use a simplified fragmentation pattern for APHE shells in the game without segmentation into different areas. If we were to implement the proposed physically reliable sector fragmentation patterns for APHE shells, the post-pen effect of APHE shells will be more realistic. However, when hitting protruding modules, such as the commander’s cupola, the probability of crew damage would be reduced.

Damage probability from the explosion of a BR-412D shell behind armor with the current fragment distribution

Damage probability in the same scenario with the proposed fragment spread

Reworking the post-pen effects of APHE shells can change the tactics of the game, making protruding weakened areas less vulnerable. However at the same time, post-pen effects after penetrating the hull of a vehicle due to the preservation of the shell’s head after the shell explodes will be increased.

In-game examples of the described changes
Here’s some screenshots of how damage to ground vehicles will be altered with the changes implemented.

Before — post-pen effect when penetrating the center of a tank without preserving the head of the shell:

After — post-pen effect when penetrating the center of a tank while preserving the head of the shell:

Before — post-pen effect when the commander’s cupola is hit by a spherical spread of fragments from a shell explosion:

After — post-pen effect when the commander’s cupola is hit with a physically reliable sectoral scattering of fragments from the shell explosion:

We’d like to hear your opinion on this — share it in the comment field and vote Yes or No for the changes to post-pen effects in the poll!

We’re planning to give players the opportunity to test these changes in a special game event, as well as the “Protection Analysis” menu, before applying these changes to all APHE shells in the game. However, preparing this testing will require some significant time from the development team, so today we want to collect your opinions on whether you’re interested in switching to a more detailed damage model for APHE shells. So, shall we test it?

ADD YOUR VOTE HERE

If you’re interested in testing, we’ll start preparing it and will host another voting on this change based on its results.

During the service history of the legendary F-14 Tomcat, Iran would become its only foreign operator and one which created an impressive service record for the aircraft. This modified variant of the Tomcat will join the fray in War Thunder’s skies, becoming available as the main reward in the Persian Tomcat event!

F-14A IRIAF: An Event Vehicle Jet Fighter for the USA at Rank VIII
    Features:
    • Superb flight characteristics.
    • Unique Iranian ordnance.
    • Top speed over Mach 2.
    • Advanced radar and avionics.

    Vehicle History
During the 1970s, the Imperial Iranian Air Force was looking into means of modernizing its aging fleet of interceptor aircraft. Specifically, the air force was looking for a modern fighter jet, capable of effectively countering the Soviet MiG-25. As part of a diplomatic mission, the U.S. government offered to share some of its latest military technology with Iran, which eventually led to the country adopting the advanced F-14 Tomcat into service. After placing an order for up to 80 aircraft including missiles and spare parts, Iran received its first Tomcats in January 1976.

With the overthrowing of the Iranian government as part of the Islamic Revolution and the outbreak of the Iraq-Iran War at the end of the 1970s, the F-14 in Iranian service earned itself a formidable reputation amongst its own as well as enemy pilots. By some accounts, throughout the eight years of conflict with Iraq, Iranian F-14s scored some 160 aerial victories while only losing around a dozen aircraft. Despite its age, the F-14 continues its service with Iranian forces to this day. The aircraft has continuously received upgrades to its armament and avionics with domestic systems, thus extending its service life. However, as a result of the aircraft’s old age coupled with international sanctions, it’s presumed that only a small number of the Iranian F-14s remain serviceable currently.

    Meet the F-14A IRIAF!
Unlike most modern American combat aircraft, the F-14 had almost no foreign operators. An exception to this is the Iranian Air Force that chose to adopt the powerful Tomcat in the early 1970s in an effort to modernize its fleet of interceptors. You’ll now have the chance to add this potent aircraft to your top tier aircraft roster through obtaining it in the Persian Tomcat event. Let’s take a closer look!

Being offered as an ‘off the shelf’ solution, the F-14A in Iranian service differs only little from its close American relative. In fact, the core design and systems remain virtually identical as only minor modifications were made to the aircraft in order to enable its export. As such, this F-14A will provide its prospective pilots with the same flight characteristics as the American counterpart. While this makes the transition for fighter pilots who already earned their wings on the F-14 virtually seamless to this aircraft, it also represents an excellent opportunity for newer pilots to obtain a truly powerful fighter, excelling at high-speed and long-distance aerial engagements.

Interesting: The Iranian Air Force is the only foreign operator to adopt the F-14 Tomcat into service.

What makes the F-14 in Iranian colors truly stand out from its American relatives, but also from many other aircraft in the game, is its unique ordnance options and the loadout possibilities it comes with. Namely, this F-14 brings with it access to familiar weapons such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. However, you’ll also be able to equip the aircraft with unique domestic missile variants such as the powerful Fakour-90 as well as the Sedjil, representing the ARH and SARH missile variants.

These missiles will greatly increase the Tomcat’s BVR capabilities and will allow it to match even the most advanced fighter jets in the game. Additionally, the F-14 can also equip Soviet R-27R1 missiles, making it one of the few aircraft in the game capable of mounting a combination of Soviet and Western missiles as well as introducing new domestic variants. Rounding off this impressive arsenal is also a selection of conventional as well as guided bombs, rockets, and missiles (including the unguided Yasser with a 750 lb bomb strapped to its nose), enabling the F-14 to also be effectively used in ground attack missions.

This unique Iranian version of the F-14 Tomcat is now making an appearance in the action-packed skies of high tier battles in War Thunder. Be sure to participate in the ongoing Persian Tomcat event that started today and add this apex predator to your collection!

    War Thunder - Blitzkrieg Wulf

Today, we’ll be going over the bug fixes and improvements that we’ve made to the game over the past 2 weeks. Let’s take a look!

If you’ve found a bug that you’d like to report, you can do so on our community bug reporting platform.

    More Interface Improvements

We never stop working on making War Thunder’s UI as good as possible. We recently added the ability to place and remove vehicles from a crew slot by simply dragging them with a mouse. This time, we’ve expanded this feature, as you can now drag and drop vehicles into different slots as well.

Vehicles and crew slots no longer display buttons — instead, we’ve added a new context menu that opens on click and offers full functionality for interacting with vehicles or crews.

And finally, choosing vehicles to respawn in battle has become easier. You no longer need to try and pick out a specific interface element with the cursor — anything related to this vehicle will do, be it its icon, cost in SP, or crew level!

    Bombers in Confrontation Fixes

In the Confrontation mode in Air Simulator Battles, a bug that affected all maps and all Battle Ratings was discovered. Under certain conditions, one of the teams did not have missions to protect bombers; the enemy accordingly did not have missions to destroy bombers. There were some exceptions to this: naval bombers attacking naval vehicles appeared as expected, and missions with them worked correctly. So on maps without naval enemies, such as Sinai or Stalingrad, this issue was especially noticeable.

We found the bug that caused this and fixed it.

Reduced the delay time of the Assault Fuses

We’ve reworked the delay time for the assault fuse to ensure minimal delay while maintaining the safety of low-altitude bomb releases. This will reduce the likelihood of the target leaving the kill zone of the bomb.

We changed the way the delay time works depending on the mass of the explosive in the bomb. With its mass up to 10 kg, the delay time will be only 1.5s, and then it will gradually increase. Upon reaching 40 kg of explosives, the delay time will be 2.7s, 120 kg — 3s, 300 kg — 3.5s, 500 kg — 4.5s, 2000 kg — 6s, and 5000 kg — 7s. This is the maximum delay time of the assault fuse: for all larger bombs, it’s 7s.

    That’s not all!
You can find the full list of fixes and improvements in each separate update note. Here’s some more: The exhaust of a vehicle’s engine that is turned off is no longer shown to other players, a crew sound message when the FCS is damaged has been added, and bananas scattered around the hangar have been removed.

    Today's update: Update 2.37.0.114

    Ground Vehicles
    • Tiger II (P) — weight has been increased from 68 to 68.5t. (Report).
    • Maus, E-100 — a bug with the difference in the strength of the breech of the gun compared to other tanks has been fixed.
    • Leopard 2 PL, Leopard 2 PSO — the muzzle velocity of the DM11 shell has been increased from 970 to 980 m/s. (Report).
    • M247 — the radius of the M822 shell’s radio fuze has been increased from 4 to 6.5 m. (Report).
    Aircraft
    • Barak II — a bug that caused the infrared channel to be missing when using IR-guided bombs has been fixed.
    • AIM-120A, AIM-120B — the delay after launch until missile control begins has been increased from 0.5 to 0.6s. (Report).
    • Mirage 2000-5F — a bug with the lack of indication of the launch range for a maneuverable target on the radar indicator has been fixed. (Report).
    • Delay time for the assault fuse of bombs has been decreased. Depending on the mass of explosives, the delay of the bomb fuse will be: 10 kg and below — 1.5s, 40 kg — 2.7s, 120 kg — 3s, 300 kg — 3.5s, 500 kg — 4.5s, 2000 kg — 6s, and 5000 kg and above — 7s.
