The AH-1W Super Cobra is a later development of the twin-engined AH-1 Cobra, optimized for service with the U.S. Marines. This helicopter will soon be available as part of the next major update in two trees!

AH-1W Super Cobra: An Attack Helicopter for the USA and China at Rank VI

Features:
  • Twin-engine design.
  • Effective ordnance options.
  • Thermal vision device.
  • Good maneuverability.
Vehicle History
[expand type=details]
As the AH-1 Cobra entered service with the Army, the USMC expressed their interest in acquiring Cobras for their own use. However, these Cobras would have to be twin-engined and possess a more capable primary armament to meet the Marines’ service requirements. Despite initial hesitation from the Department of Defense, the Marines received the go-ahead and proceeded with awarding Bell with a contract to produce 49 AH-1J Sea Cobras in May 1968.

Similarly to the Army, the USMC also perceived the AH-1 as an interim vehicle, until a more suitable replacement could be found. Whilst this replacement would come to the Army in the form of the AH-64 Apache, the USMC’s request to upgrade their fleet with a naval version of the Apache would be met with disapproval by the Congress in 1981, thus forcing the Marines to look into other options. The decision was therefore made to upgrade the existing fleet with new AH-1W Super Cobras, which featured an improved fire control system and the ability to carry more advanced ordnance.

Meet the AH-1W Super Cobra!

The AH-1W Super Cobra is coming to the American and Chinese helicopter tree in the Alpha Strike major update! Today, we’ll talk about what advantages its different engine gives, plus its expanded arsenal of ordnance options compared to the AH-1F. Let’s take a look!

The first and most visible difference of the AH-1W is its different engine setup. Instead of being powered by a single Lycoming T53 engine, this helicopter is powered by two General Electric T700-GE-401C turboshaft engines. This allows it to reach a slightly higher top speed of over 280 km/h in level flight!

There’s some additions to the AH-1W’s weaponry options. Firstly, it’s able to fire two AIM-9L air-to-air missiles, which are excellent against aircraft that may be trying to destroy you while you attempt to take out ground vehicles. In addition to Mighty Mouse rockets, the AH-1W can carry Zuni rocket pods as well, plus up to 4 x 20 mm cannons on wing pylons. And lastly, there’s anti-tank guided missiles in the form of the famous TOW 2 with a launch range of about 4 km, and the AGM-114B Hellfire air-to-ground missile that has great penetration and a launch range up to 8 km. In total, 8 of them can be mounted on this helicopter.

That wraps today’s blog! The AH-1W Super Cobra will soon be coming to the USA and China’s helicopter tree in the Alpha Strike major update, which is almost ready for release! Until that happens though, fun battles ahead!

The Thai F-5E Tiger II jet fighter is going to be a new squadron vehicle that will be added to the Japanese air research tree in the Alpha Strike major update!

F-5E FCU: A Jet Fighter for Japan at Rank VII as a Squadron Vehicle

Features:
  • Excellent handling!
  • High overload resistance.
  • Python 3 and AIM-9P4 air-to-air missiles.
  • Large arsenal of ordnance against ground vehicles.
Vehicle History
[expand type=details]
The Royal Thai Air Force received the first F-5 series aircraft in the late 1960s during the Vietnam War, where the resulting aircraft were equipped purely as attack aircraft. The country began receiving more advanced F-5Es in the late 70s. In 1988, the modernization of part of the F-5E fleet began. They received a HUD, a new sight with a ballistic computer, countermeasures, an RWR and the ability to install Python 3 missiles. Even though the Royal Thai Air Force have begun using F-16 fighters, the F-5 series of aircraft remain in service to this day.
[/expand]

Meet the F-5E FCU!

Welcome the addition of the Royal Thai Air Force’s F-5E to the Japanese air tree, coming in the Alpha Strike major update! The Thai variant of this popular multi-role fighter is even better for air duels thanks to the addition of the Israeli Python 3 short-range missile and the AIM-9P4, a new air-to-air missile that will be added to the game. Let’s take a closer look!

Developer comment: We’re adding the Thai F-5E FCU to Japan as a squadron vehicle to help bolster this air tree with an interesting option, as Japan has very limited domestic modern jet aircraft to add. In addition to air battles, this aircraft will also be useful in ground battles thanks to its ordnance options, overall helping Japan’s ground forces lineup. The F-5 is a popular aircraft in War Thunder that many of you are familiar with, and Thailand is geographically quite close to Japan, with both having good modern relations.

The F-5 series simply needs no introduction. They can be seen in almost every air battle at the higher ranks, where a large number of pilots will say this fighter is one of their favorites in the game. This aircraft is compact and fast, perfectly controllable at any altitude and is good in dogfights. In addition to this, they make good work of ground vehicles too as an attack aircraft!

All-in-all, the Thai F-5E FCU takes all of the advantages of the F-5 in the US and Chinese air trees and improves upon them. First up, let’s welcome a new air-to-air missile to War Thunder: the AIM-9P4 Sidewinder! This missile is quite effective at short-range and derives from the AIM-9P series, but features an all-aspect seeker instead. Besides this, an excellent air-to-air missile in the form of the Python 3, which is known for its high maneuverability and is best suited for short-range air duels can be equipped as well. Lastly, there’s a radar, RWR and 45 flares + chaff can be launched, all perfect for air battles in general. You’ve got everything you need!

Interesting: Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn (King Rama X of Thailand since 2016) personally piloted F-5 jet fighters.

In addition to the accurate 20 mm cannon in the nose, the F-5E FCU can take a 30 mm GAU-13/A gun pod under the fuselage, which is useful in air combat and even against tanks. On the subject of tanks...

Just like other F-5Es, this vehicle carries a solid range of ground attack options. Up to 4 x high-precision AGM-65Bs can engage tanks from long range and altitude, plus regular unguided rockets at closer ranges if needed. On five weapon hardpoints, you’ll be able to place more than 7 tons of ordnance: regular bombs, assault and incendiary bombs, Mighty Mouse rockets and Zuni rockets. To help aiming these rockets, the F-5E FCU has a ballistic computer thanks to the Thai modernization program, which certainly helps in battles!

The Thai F-5E FCU is going to be a squadron vehicle that can be obtained for squadron activity points when in a squadron, or purchased with Golden Eagles whenever you wish. This awesome and interesting aircraft is an excellent addition to Japan for any game mode!

This is the interesting M60 120S, which takes the M1A1 Abrams’ turret and combines it with the M60A1 hull. This vehicle was designed to be exported to countries that wanted a cheaper and upgradable option for a main battle tank.

M60 120S: An MBT for the USA at Rank VII

    Features:
    • 120 mm smoothbore cannon!
    • Laser rangefinder.
    • Thermal sight.
    Vehicle History
    [expand type=details]
Late in 1999, General Dynamics Land Systems were looking to put a tank together that was suitable to export to countries as a cheaper alternative to the current main battle tanks. To attract buyers, it was decided to pair an M1A1 turret onto an M60A1 hull — a hull which was already in use with many countries around the world. This combination could also allow for countries to convert their existing M60 hulls into the M60 120S standard if required. In August 2001 the first prototype was completed and subsequently shown at the IDEF Exhibition in Turkey in October 2001. Having been proposed to countries such as Turkey and Egypt, there was no interest and the project was abandoned with only 1 prototype being built.
    [/expand]

    Meet the M60 120S!

The M60 120S is what you get when you take an M1A1 Abrams tank turret and wedge it onto an M60A1 hull — you get some sort of Frankenstein creation, which is in fact going to be arriving in the Alpha Strike major update. Let’s take a look at what else this scary monster has to offer!

For those of you who are already familiar with the Abrams in-game, this tank is going to feel quite close to home. This is because the M60 120S comes fitted with a 120 mm M256 smoothbore cannon that’s capable of firing HEAT-FS and the M829A1 APFSDS round, which are good enough to take out most enemy tanks at this rank. To top it all off, the main gun is backed up with good electronics including a handy laser rangefinder and GEN 1 thermal sights for the gunner, perfect for engaging targets at longer distances. In typical fashion, we must not forget about the .50 caliber machine gun on the turret roof that’s solid for firing at low flying helicopters and planes!

As probably expected, the armor of the M60 120S is a combination of two things. It takes the M1A1 turret — featuring composite armor — and combines it with the weaker M60 hull armor that has no composite armor to speak of. The end result is a mishmash of core tank parts from two different eras of tank design. Ensure you try to utilize your turret armor, which is stronger than the hull!

Due to the placement of a heavier turret, the mass of the M60 120S is 56 tons, which is heavier than the M60. In terms of mobility, this tank features the same 750 HP engine as a regular M60, allowing it to reach a max speed of 48 km/h, but its general maneuverability will feel more sluggish due to the increased weight. Overall the M60 120S is certainly not the fastest, but will still allow you to get to positions or get to capture points at a reasonable pace!

In your matches by Viacheslav, Game Director: “The 120S is going to provide good firepower to some lineups. You will be able to withstand some shots to the turret, but your weaker hull will be penetrated by the majority of shells at this Battle Rating, so make sure to hide it wherever possible. I would peek over ridge lines and hills, utilizing the 120 mm’s firepower to your advantage ensuring your hull is not exposed to enemies.”

With that, we’ve reached the end of this development blog! In short, the M60 120S is going to be a fun tank to play in different types of lineups. Keep an eye out on our website for other blogs that will be coming, until then, success to you in battle

The long awaited Franco-German strike aircraft will soon be available for you to hone your skills on in War Thunder when it arrives in the Alpha Strike major update. Today we’ll be introducing you to this famous European workhorse that has trained generations of pilots!

Alpha Jet A & E: A Strike Aircraft for Germany and France at Rank VI

    Features:
    • Maneuverable!
    • Good low speed handling.
    • Small silhouette.
    • No guided munitions.
    Vehicle History
    [expand type=details]
By 1969, both Germany and France had a need for a new generation of jet trainer aircraft to replace their existing inventory of T-33 and Fouga Magister aircraft. It was decided that a collaboration between Dornier and Dassault-Breguet, with the latter first being two separate companies who later merged, had the best potential for a joint TA (Trainer Attack) aircraft over other competing manufacturers and won out the contest with the TA501.

This aircraft was to satisfy the Luftwaffe’s need to also replace their G.91 aircraft in the attack role, while the Armée de l'Air’s needs were mostly on the training gap that the Anglo-French Jaguar was initially intended to cover, but ended up being a more advanced supersonic conversion / strike aircraft. As such, two distinct versions of what would be the Alpha Jet were formed. The A - Appui / Attack and the E - Ecole / Trainer versions. These would be produced in sub assemblies in Germany, France and also Belgium.

The first prototype would take to the skies in October 1973 and after many more years of testing and trials, the Alpha Jet would enter French and German service in 1979, going on to be a success story of collaboration between nations. While it still serves to this day with France, the aircraft has also been a huge export success, with multiple nations from Belgium, Portugal and Thailand operating the type, as well as it also being popular with private company operators who use them as aggressor training aircraft in the UK, America and Canada.
    [/expand]

    Meet the Alpha Jet!

Coming in two distinct versions, the Alpha jet will introduce new strike capabilities to the French (E variant) and German (A variant) air trees in the next major update. A versatile platform with reliable flight characteristics and a dual pilot arrangement, this small sized attack aircraft will be a valuable addition to your ground forces lineups. Let’s take a closer look!

The Alpha Jet is a twin engine aircraft arrangement, powered by two SNECMA Turbomeca Larzac engines, enabling this jet to reach speeds of about 1,000 km/h. Swept back wings incorporate a design that allows for excellent low and high speed handling, being a forgiving trainer aircraft, but also a deadly precise subsonic attack aircraft.

Interesting: Alpha jets are not just used for military purposes. They are also utilized as a popular display act by the distinctive French Air Force display team, the Patrouille de France as well as other display teams like the Flying Bulls display team. The gun pods are often converted to smoke generators and colored dye added to get that distinctive display smoke, just like you can use in War Thunder too!

Those of you who are already familiar with the SK60 and SAAB 105 family of aircraft will already feel at home with this aircraft. The high wing of the Alpha jet means that, despite its small size, it can still carry an array of weaponry choices with some district specifics between each variant. Both offer a range of regular bombs, including 250 kg and 500 kg, as well as rockets with the help of CCIP and CCRP, aiding in the delivery of payloads to ensure they find their mark.

What are some of the core differences? Firstly, the offensive armament is the first major difference, with the German A model sporting a 150 round 27 mm Mauser BK27 cannon that can be found on the Tornado, and the French E model mounting a 30 mm DEFA 553 cannon with 150 rounds of ammunition. To make it easier to line up your shots, both guns are mounted on the center line of the aircraft! Secondly, the E model can also mount two additional 30 mm DEFA 553 cannon pods on the wings, something the A model can’t do. And lastly, the A model can carry 60 countermeasures as well as more rocket pods, both of which the E model lacks.

In your matches by Alex, Aircraft Game Designer: “The Alpha jet is one of the main vehicles in this update, hence the name. I would primarily use this aircraft in ground forces lineups, but you can also use it in air battles thanks to its small size, nimble maneuverability and good cannon. You don’t have any guided bombs, but regular bombs and a CCIP are the perfect combination for flying in low and dropping them onto enemy tanks. Use the 27 mm / 30 mm cannon, to fend off aircraft or shoot at lightly armored vehicles as well.”

Two variants of the Alpha Jet strike aircraft will soon be entering the game in the next War Thunder major update. Take your opponents back to school and boost your ground forces lineups with some CAS support from this small but deadly aircraft! Until the next one, stay tuned to the news for more of what’s to come!

Discounts on purchasing stages using Golden Eagles
Unfinished stages can be purchased for Golden Eagles, but if you’re significantly close to completing a stage, its price will now be significantly reduced.

Let’s say you have earned 85% of the required mission points to complete a stage, then the price of purchasing this stage will be halved. If you’re near the finish line for a stage and are at 95% progress, then the price will be reduced by five times. For example, if you’ve scored 39,000 mission points, then the price for unlocking this stage will be 499 Golden Eagles. If you’ve scored 43,000 mission points, then you’ll only need to pay 199 Golden Eagles. Remember to keep this in mind if you cannot complete a stage on time!

    The Upgrade for coupon
When you complete 8 stages, you’ll receive a non-tradable coupon for SMS Baden, where using it will immediately activate the vehicle onto your account. If you don’t want the vehicle and would like to sell the coupon on the Market, you’ll need the “Upgrade for coupon” item.

The “Upgrade for coupon” item can be earned in parallel with the stages throughout the event from March 14th (11:00 GMT) until April 1st (11:00 GMT) for 750,000 mission points.

After receiving the “Upgrade for coupon” item, you can convert a non-tradable coupon for the vehicle into a tradable one and sell it on the Market. The tradable coupon can be sold after 6 days from the moment it’s created.

To make a tradable coupon, select the “Coupon SMS Baden (Germany)” in your inventory and click the “Modify” button.

The “Upgrade for coupon” item is valid until 11:00 GMT on April 4th. Until this time, you can use it or exchange it for War Bonds. Afterwards, it’ll disappear from your inventory.

You can track the progress of completing stages and receiving the “Upgrade for coupon” by clicking on your Nickname > Achievements > Imperial Flagship. If you don’t manage to complete a stage on time or would like to purchase a stage, until April 4th from the Achievements window, you can purchase each stage with Golden Eagles which will give you the corresponding rewards.

Let’s have a look at an interesting addition to Britain’s ground forces tree, which is fully capable of speeding around the battlefield and being a nuisance for the enemy team when it arrives in the next major update: say hello to the FV721 Fox!

FV721 Fox: A Light Tank for Great Britain at Rank IV

    Features:
    • 30 mm L21A1 automatic cannon.
    • Separate stock SAP and HEI belt; APDS belt as unlock.
    • Great top speed!
    • Light armor.
    • No thermals.
    Vehicle History
    [expand type=details]
In the 1960s, the British Army was looking to replace their outdated Ferret and Saladin armored cars with a more capable vehicle that featured the 30 mm L21A1 RARDEN cannon. Development of the FV721 Fox started in 1965 by Daimler with the first prototype ready and shown to the British Army in 1967. After successful trials, full-scale production of the Fox was given the go ahead and was completed by 1973. Over 300 were built, where most were operated by Britain which are now out of service, and some by Malawi and Nigeria that are still in service today in very limited numbers.
    [/expand]

    Meet the FV721 Fox!

The Fox is a 4 x 4 wheeled light tank that features the 30 mm L21A1 automatic cannon and a fantastic top speed, overall helping bolster some of Britain’s mid-rank tank lineups. Arriving to the game in the Alpha Strike major update, the Fox is an opportunistic predator that’s fast, nimble and up to the task, so let’s take a look at its lethality!

Perhaps the most notable feature of the Fox is its 30 mm L21A1 automatic cannon that can also be found on the Warrior. This gun is capable of firing APDS shells, significantly improving armor penetration compared to the default SAP only belt, and are best fired at the sides and rear of enemy tanks. This, coupled with an excellent turret rotation speed means you’re going to be able to pick and prioritize the right targets as you please. However, it’s good to keep in mind that the fire rate is still slower compared to other automatic cannons found on other light tanks in-game, which is one of the biggest drawbacks to the L21A1. Be sure to aim and pick your shots wisely!

Interesting: “FV” in FV721 stands for “Fighting Vehicle”. The number 721 can be broken down into two parts: the 700 series of vehicles based on the Ferret armored car, and the 20 series based on Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles (Wheeled) of the British Army.

Such a small and light vehicle typically means great mobility, and this is exactly what the Fox is going to offer! Its engine, capable of outputting up to 190 hp, coupled with its mass of about 6 tons is going to provide a power-to-weight ratio of about 31 and speeds of up to 99 km/h. Thanks to this, the Fox is going to have a good time on road and even off-road where it will be able to provide supporting fire through flanking and pouncing on unsuspecting enemy vehicles, plus of course scouting for allies.

Coming in with a very low weight and having an excellent top speed can only mean one thing though, and that’s poor protection. The Fox has light aluminum alloy armor which is enough in most areas to protect against small machine guns and even .50 cals, but does mean it’s going to become perfect prey for any larger caliber weapon, aircraft and artillery strikes. On the flip side, the Fox has one particular advantage, and that’s the fact that it’s a very small vehicle, perfect for sneaking around and changing positions on the battlefield.

In your matches by Chris, Community Manager: “Overall use the speed to your advantage! I would recommend flanking and only shooting frontally to take out an enemy’s gun barrel or tracks, and shoot to the side for the crew or ammo for the kill shot. Prioritize taking out your targets wisely due to the gun’s slower rate of fire. Spot for your teammates to rack up points and have some fun (if it’s safe) by speeding to capture points to help your team win the battle (but wait for your teammates to capture too if they’re nearby)!”

With that, we’ve reached the end of this dev blog! The FV721 Fox is going to be a handy addition to Britain, providing it with some great mobility and firepower in battle. Be sure to keep an eye out on our website for more dev blogs that we’ll be releasing, but until then, happy battles ahead!
