HMS Dido is the lead ship of her class of light cruisers, built for the Royal Navy in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Having seen extensive service in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, HMS Dido is now headed for the naval battles of War Thunder and will become available to seasoned captains in the upcoming major update 1.85!

Dido-class light cruiser were designed in the 1930s as convoy escorts and destroyer leaders, intended for operations in the Mediterranean. As such, ships of the Dido-class had to be both large enough to operate in rough waters as well as fast and maneuverable enough in order to keep up with destroyers, whilst at the same time remaining relatively cheap to produce in large numbers.

HMS Dido, the lead ship of her class, was laid down in October 1937. In July 1939, Dido was completed and commissioned into service a year later. HMS Dido’s early service life was marked with convoy escort duties in the Atlantic, before joining the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet in April 1941.

HMS Dido has firmly set course for War Thunder naval battles and is expected to arrive at player ports with the release of the upcoming major update 1.85 "Supersonic". In the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to the news in order to find out what the next update has in store for you! Until then, calm seas captains!

War Thunder update 1.85, which we’ve called “Supersonic”, introduces a new kind of weapon to the game: air-to-air missiles. Early models of these missiles, including the American AIM-9B Sidewinder, the Soviet P-3C, and the British Firestreak, will become available for particular aircraft. Some helicopters in the game will also get air-to-air missiles, but more modern types. Why are helicopters getting better missiles, you ask? We explained it all in the Developer Diary entry “The Future of Aircraft in War Thunder: Supersonic Jet Aircraft and Air-to-air Missiles.”

All current air-to-air missiles in update 1.85 have an infrared guidance system with a target-tracking indicator – the missile is aimed using the method of proportional navigation along the shortest trajectory in order to directly intercept the target. Since the guided warheads of early missiles only react to heat generated by hot gasses from engines, targeting is only effective against the rear hemisphere of aircraft and less effectively other angles. Early air-to-air missiles could reliably lock onto the thermal signature of jet engines, turboshaft engines, and powerful piston engines. Many WWII-era biplanes and other aircraft, for example, are thus invisible to guided missiles at long range. The homing system of newer missiles are all-aspect, which means that they can also intercept heat given off by the bodies of aircraft and can even be used from the frontal hemisphere. Since various kinds of radiation can be detected within the infrared spectrum, missiles can, depending on the features of their design, react to some degree to the sun, heat traps, and active electro-optical countermeasures.

The target-tracking indicator of some missiles was always strictly focused along the missile’s axis prior to launch, and the missile could only be fired if the pilot kept the target within his sights. In other aircraft, the indicator tracked the target, and the aircraft carrying it could manoeuvre within a certain sector relative to it. This made it possible to lead while firing a missile, thus improving the starting conditions for it when firing at targets on intercept courses. We’ve reconstructed these nuances in the game by setting different targeting ranges for various missile models.

Designed initially to be a more reliable and low-cost alternative to the T-64, the T-72 quickly became one of the most mass produced and widely used Soviet MBTs of the Cold War. Coming to War Thunder with update 1.85 "Supersonic", the iconic Soviet Cold War MBT trio will finally be complete with the introduction of the long-awaited T-72A!

Development of the T-72 began shortly after the production of the T-64 highlighted several problems which negatively impacted production rates. Among these problems was an unreliable engine, which couldn’t be produced at the high rates needed for a smooth production of the T-64 to take place.

In response, the Uralvagonzavod plant began working on a modified version of the T-64, which would use a more reliable and readily available engine, in order to provide the army with a tank fit for mass-production. Apart from this, changes were also made to the armor layout, in order to simplify production and decrease costs. This work resulted in the creation of the Object 172.

The much-anticipated T-72A will soon become available to all War Thunder tank commanders with the release of the upcoming update 1.85 "Supersonic". In the meantime, make sure to keep a close eye on the news in order not to miss out on more information regarding the next major update. Until then, happy hunting tankers!

Briefly: A new location for ground battles, inspired by the Vietnamese town of Hội An and its surroundings.

In update 1.85, we’re pleased to present a new location for combined arms battles, set in the breathtaking landscape of Vietnam. Specifically, battles will take place on a 4x4km ground location, inspired by the town of Hội An and its imminent surroundings.

Players will fight in and over three distinct parts of the map. The northern section of the map is defined by rocky mountains, separated by deep gorges, through which long and winding roads lead to the occasional open mountain plateau. Combat here will be fierce as vehicles will often clash head on, making this the perfect fighting ground for heavily armored brawlers.

The new Vietnam Hills map will become available in War Thunder combined battles very soon with the release of the upcoming update 1.85. Lock ‘n’ load, commanders!
