We are pleased to present the 1972 model of the AMX-30, with which truly modern French tanks begin.

Initially, the AMX-30 was developed to specifications from the armies of three countries – France, Italy and Germany, but the joint project collapsed and the AMX science and research centre undertook to finish the tank on its own. Like the engineers of other countries, the French tank designers understood that the race for maximum armour was leading nowhere – modern HEAT shells and anti-tank rockets gave tanks with traditional homogeneous armour absolutely no chance. Accordingly, the focus in development was placed on two other factors that were decisive in the field – mobility and armament. The tank’s powertrain was a 700 hp HS-110 engine, which allowed it to reach speeds comparable to those of light tanks – 65 km/h on the highway and 40 km/h off-road. Its main armament was the CN-105-F1, a 105 mm gun with fixed ammunition and a complement of 50 shells. As of 1972, instead of a high-calibre machine gun twinned with the main gun, a 20 mm cannon was installed in the turret – this very version of the tank (sometimes designated AMX-30B) we have added to the game. Although the tank’s defenses were considered secondary, it is far from deprived of armour – it has rolled and cast armour plates reaching thicknesses of 80 mm with significant clean angles.

AMX-30 and its modifications will soon appear in the game with War Thunder update 1.75 La Résistance – keep an eye on our news!

The ARL-44 is a post-war heavy tank project, purely intended for French engineers to refresh their knowledge on tank development after the end of the occupation period. Although the tank was developed too late to participate in hostilities, it did fulfill its purpose to serve as a base for future French tank development, giving engineers valuable experience that would be put to good used in the decades to come.

Development of the ARL-44 began shortly after the Liberation of France in 1944. The established provisional government was keen on restoring France’s influence and power to what it used to be before the war. This involved, among other things, the revival of all French military branches. The situation was looking particularly desperate for the army, as most indigenous equipment and tanks were manufactured in the 1930s and the most advanced in use at the time was equipment left behind by the Germans. The French Ministry of War decided to remedy this issue by starting the production of a so called “transitional tank”. This project was intended to bolster the number of indigenous tanks in use with the army, reuse existing tank parts and, most importantly, provide French engineers with a base on which they could “experiment” on to gain valuable experience for future tank development. Thus, in November 1944, the decision was made to design a heavy tank with relatively modest specifications. Staff from several design and manufacturing state companies were assigned to the project and work on what would become the ARL-44 began.

The ARL-44, despite some of its shortcomings, is still a very formidable force to come across on the battlefield . The classical attributes of heavy duty protection coupled with a very powerful gun make it a very attractive competitor to some of the already well-established “top dogs” in the game. The ARL-44 is headed to War Thunder’s battlefields with the upcoming update 1.75 La Résistance!, along with a whole host of other French ground forces. Stay tuned to the news to find out more about the next major update to War Thunder! Until then!

The SO.4050 IIA Vautour is a French, jet-powered aircraft created during the Cold War. It was designed for multiple combat roles, including bombing, intercepting, and ground attack.

France worked diligently to recover from the destruction and losses suffered during WWII, and their efforts included rebuilding and modernizing their armed forces. Jet propulsion was the future of fighters, but France was behind the other allied powers in developing it. French engineers had only begun familiarizing themselves with jet technology because the German occupation prevented them from studying it.

The FCM 36 is a light infantry tank developed for the French army by the FCM company in the mid 1930s. Due to its complex armour layout the vehicle was surprisingly difficult to destroy, but equally difficult to mass-produce, resulting in a very limited production run. Regardless, the FCM 36 still managed to take part in hostilities throughout the war, fighting for both sides of the conflict.

In 1934, the FCM company received an order from the French army to design a modern tank for their light tank regiments. FCM was an experienced tank manufacturer, having proved themselves with work on previous projects (such as the Char 2C and Char B1), and quickly developed a new light tank design. Just over a year after the initial wooden mockup was presented and approved by the Army, the first prototype was tested in April 1935. During the one year testing period, multiple changes were made to make the vehicle more reliable, lighter, and better protected.

The FCM 36 offers players an interesting combination of protection, firepower, and mobility, the three of which are rarely found in a light tank. But to perform well, commanders must think outside the box, improvise, and creatively solve problems in the ever changing battlefields of War Thunder.

A legendary GMC truck chassis equipped with an automatic 40mm caliber Bofors cannon is a French recipe for a powerful, adaptable anti-aircraft gun—and it will roll into War Thunder accompanied by some all new French tanks in War Thunder update 1.75!

Nicknamed the “Deuce-and-a-half” by the U.S. army, the American 2.5 ton triple-axle 6x6 made by GMC is a true army workhorse. GMC trucks were vital to supplying and equipping allies after land operations began in Europe, and more than 560 thousand of these trucks were produced during World War II. They proved invaluable to supply lines and the battlefield. The GMC CCKW 353 was a combat model of the famous truck equipped with a 40mm anti-aircraft gun and used by the French in WWII.

In War Thunder, the self-propelled anti-air GMC CCKW 353 with the Bofors cannon occupies the medium ranks of the French armor tech tree. The vehicle has no armor, so its role on the battlefield is solely to support allies. The CCKW 353 commander has two types of ammunition available: a tracer, high-explosive fragmenting round perfectly suited for destroying airplanes, and a solid armor-piercing tracer round capable of destroying enemy tanks and armored vehicles.

In addition to this adaptable, French anti-air platform, we are pleased to present some new, French tankman model specially created for the new French ground vehicles coming in War Thunder update 1.75. See you there!
