War Thunder - pryanick

On the 8th of May 1945, Allied forces who had fought during the Second World War celebrated “VE Day” or “Victory in Europe Day”.

Major cities in most Allied nations, as well as those cities in Western Europe which had formerly been occupied, rejoiced in the defeat of the Nazi war machine with the raising of flags and banners.

German forces lay down their arms and held their fire: In Prague, Germans surrendered to their Soviet counterparts, after the latter had lost more than 8,000 soldiers, and the Germans many more; in Copenhagen and Oslo; at Karlshorst, near Berlin; in northern Latvia; on the Channel Island of Sark — their surrender was complete with a final cease-fire, followed by more surrender documents that were signed in Berlin and East Germany.

A terrifying howl, the smoke trails of dozens of rockets and an ocean of fire in which enemy troops and fortifications drown. This became one of the most vivid symbols of WW2. German troops nicknamed the BM-13 rocket launcher “Stalin’s organ”, while the Red Army affectionately named it Katyusha. In honour of the 72nd anniversary of victory in the WW2, we are proud to present the legendary Katyusha in War Thunder!

From the first large battles of WW2, the experience of using rocket artillery showed that the BM-13 Katyusha vehicles were highly effective in destroying enemy ground troops and vehicles. The high shell spread rate was compensated for by each launcher’s high rate of fire and the practice of using Katyushas only in an artillery battery, provided a high density of fire over a large area. In addition, the characteristic howl as the shells launched during massed fire, along with the explosions and destruction that the BM-13 launchers dished out, had a significant psychological effect on enemy soldiers. In short, the Katyusha was a magnificent weapon and its battle career took it all the way from the summer of 1941 to Berlin itself.

A new addition to the Soviet fleet – the Project 7U Destroyer. Ships of this class served in defense of the Soviet Union from the earliest days of its involvement in the Second World War.

In the early 1930s, the young yet ambitious and fast-developing Soviet state decided to commission new destroyers to defend its territorial waters. The new ships were intended to replace the outdated ships of this class, which had put in a poor showing during the First World War. A special design bureau was established to meet this need, and the cutting-edge Italian Maestrale-class destroyers were selected as prototypes. Along with many fine qualities, the Project 7 destroyers (as the new warships were called) also came with a host of weaknesses. One of these was the linear placement of the engines – this became the rationale for the complete redesign of the whole series. This was prompted by the withdrawal of the British Hunter destroyer from service, which had the same engine placement – a single mine was enough to render the British ship completely immobile. This move compelled the shipbuilders to fully review the placement of the power system in Project 7 destroyers. As a result, all finished ships were fitted with engines using an echelon layout.

The modernized version was designated with the letter “U” for “upgraded.” The ship’s silhouette changed from single-funnel to twin-funnel, while the deck superstructure and armament remained unchanged. By improving the survivability of the powertrain and considerably tightening the arrangement of the destroyer’s sections, the engineers sacrificed both the speed and travel range, and changed the placement of the large-calibre anti-air guns to something far less practical. The series was launched despite these shortcomings – by the time Germany invaded the USSR, seven 7U units had been built, and another 11 ships were completed throughout the war.

Naval commanders can look forward to experiencing all the advantages and disadvantages of the Project 7U destroyers in War Thunder. The Project 7U is a comparatively slow, highly resilient and superbly armed vessel. Her main power system consists of two engine rooms and two boiler rooms. This Soviet giant has a nominal output of around 60,000 hp and can reach a respectable speed of 36–38 knots (up to 70 km/h). The destroyer has a crew of 271, most of whom service the ship’s enormous arsenal. The destroyer features four 130mm cannons, two on the bow and two on the stern. The four cannons are supplemented with torpedo armament in the form of two three-barrel automatic weapons, as well as depth charges. The anti-air armament includes several calibres: two 76mm guns on the stern, three 45mm semi-automatic guns behind the first funnel, and four 12.7mm DShK machine guns placed at the front of the destroyer.

The Yak-3T was an experimental version of the renown Soviet Yak-3 fighter that attempted to improve its firepower and allow it to effectively engage heavily armored targets, such as tanks. Players will have the chance to try out this unique aircraft for themselves after acquiring 11 “Chronicles awards” for pilots.

In early 1945, Soviet engineers were conducting testing of a new version of the Yak-3. The new modification set out to improve the base model’s firepower and allow it to engage hostile armor. It achieved this by replacing the standard armaments with a pair of 20mm and a single 37mm autocannon. This weapon loadout gave the Yak-3T a very respectable one-second burst mass of 6 kg/s. The aircraft’s cockpit had to be moved slightly to the rear of the fuselage in order to compensate for the additional weight caused by the new, heavier armament. However, with the aircraft suffering from severe engine reliability issues and the war coming to a close, the project was ultimately cancelled, thus never leaving prototype stage.

In War Thunder, the Yak-3T will be a collectible aircraft situated on the third rank of the Soviet reserach tree. The aircraft is a true hybrid - featuring very similar handling characteristics to the regular Yak-3 combined with a powerful 37mm autocannon, similar to the one used on the Yak-9T, which is able to crack the toughest of opponents on the ground and in the air alike. For being a premium vehicle, the Yak-3T will allow its pilots to earn additional rewards in Research Points and Silver Lions with every scored hit.
