DCS World Steam Edition - NineLine
Hey everyone,

A little update on the Hornet… as mentioned before, much of the Hornet team’s time is focused on the targeting pod, JSOW, MSI for LTWS, tuning of JDAM and JSOW flight profile and autopilots, and a deep dive on the INS and GPS navigation systems. We are also working on the HARM guidance system in cases where the seeker loses track (it is currently re-targeting to a different emitter, whereas it should continue along the bearing to the assigned target). All these tasks are rather involved and not low-hanging fruit that can be coded quickly. Earlier, we focused on tasks with faster turnarounds, but these current tasks are taking longer. Development of the Hornet has certainly NOT slowed down, rather, it’s simply shifted to tasks with longer development periods.

We expect to have the JSOW, BRU-55A/A, and MSI for LTWS available later this month, and the targeting pod will start internal testing later this month, with a planned release in June.

DCS: I-16 Now Available! (Coming to Steam soon!)

The Polikarpov I-16 fighter, developed by 3rd party studio OctopusG, is now available for download!

The I-16 was a Soviet, monoplane fighter developed during the 1930s inter-war years. It was innovative for its time with a low-wing cantilever design and retractable landing gear. It was the USSR’s primary fighter at the start of World War 2 where it primarily battled the Bf 109 Emil. In addition to the Second World War, the I-16 was also used in the Spanish Civil War and the second Sino-Japanese War.

The I-16 type 24 was powered by an M-63 radial engine that gave it a top speed of 462 kph. The aircraft was armed with four 7.62 ShKAS machine guns. In total, 7,000 single seat versions of this famous fighter were built.

The I-16 is a fun and interesting aircraft and further grows our stable of warbirds. This aircraft is particularly interesting when flown in virtual reality.

DCS World Open Beta Update
In this week’s Open Beta update, we added support for precise JDAM coordinate targeting in Pre-Planned mode, by displaying latitude and longitude coordinates down to hundredth of a second on the Mission Editor map and the F10 View map

Degrees/Minutes/Seconds/Decimal values. Cycle through coordinate display option available by press Left Alt + Y. Once you enter Degrees/Minutes/Seconds, press ENT on the UFC to then enter the two-digit decimal value and then press ENT again on the UFC.

Please read the complete Open Beta changelog here

Regarding the Hornet, this was a light cycle due to several large and complex features in development during the last couple of weeks. In particular, the Litening II targeting pod, AGM-154 JSOW glide bomb, full simulation of the INS and GPS navigation systems, dynamic launch zones and loft modes for JDAM and JSOW, and other items.

Stingers Combat Movie
Congratulations to the Stingers on their first combat movie! It’s as campy as a Boy Scouts retreat, but hilarious and very well done. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Damage Model Progress Update
Our new damage model is currently being implemented and tuned to the specifics of each of our internally developed WWII aircraft in DCS World. Each aircraft has unique hydraulics, pneumatic and electrical systems, materials and kinematics. As a result, the predicted damage depends on the type and location of impact will vary substantially. The internal effect such as coolant or oil temperature variation, loss of pressure, loss of control or other effects should, in turn, generate the corresponding predicted the internal and/or external visual effect.

Our AI aircraft will also be tuned appropriately and this work is ongoing. We have also added some great tools for testing the damage model on our internal builds. With these tools, we can track the trajectory of hits, shrapnel and damage suffered. In the attached screenshot, you can see the result of a testing session with a Me-109K-4 vs some Flak fire. In the X-ray log window, you can see how different hits make their way into and in some cases through the aircraft. In one instance, an object enters the left tail and stops in the right tail. While the graphical representation isn't the exact location, on the aircraft you will see damage entering at this location, but not exiting on the other side. In another case, you can see objects entering the wing tip, and exiting the middle of the wing. Again, the damage would show on both sides of the wing, based on objects entering and exiting it. As well, you can see how an object entered one Ammo Box, severed the ammo belts on 2 guns, as well as severing a fuel line before stopping in a second ammo box. If you were to use those guns, you would run out of ammo before the indicators showed you did. You can see by the log data that we track the path of the object, the material and/or items passing through it.

I hope this update gives you a better understanding of what we are aiming to achieve with our new damage model. We trust that it will be to your satisfaction.

Update of Russian Ural-375 Trucks
While the weapon systems often get the spotlight, it is also important that support units continue to be updated and improved as DCS World grows and evolves. This is part of an ongoing effort to update all older DCS World units.

See High Res screenshots here here

Today we bring you three new and updated variants of the venerable Ural-375 truck. The Ural-375 is a workhorse of the Russia military and is a 4.5-ton 6x6 multi-purpose platform from which many variants have been produced since its introduction in 1979. In addition to cargo and crew variants, it has also served as the chassis for the BM-21 rocket launcher, a fuel carrier, and hard and soft tops.

Hey everyone!

Apologies for the lack of Hornet news of late. I’ve been a bit unwell lately and the team has been focused on more difficult tasks, so progress has been slower.

The big items (in no particular order) that we are working on for the Hornet include:
Cleaning up the JDAM and adding new features to the JDAM
Adding the JSOW (already in internal test)
Add full simulation of GPS and INS alignment and navigation systems
PRECISE waypoint input mode
Correcting HARM guidance
MIDS for LTWS and TWS
Litening II targeting pod

Regarding PB mode for HARM, we decided to push this back for two reasons: 1- based on client feedback, the targeting pod is much more in demand, and 2- we first want to complete the new waypoint database system that will allow creating of PB points.

The next Hornet update is planned for May 8th.

Thanks,
Wags

First released several years ago as our first DCS World War II fighter, we recently revisited the Mustang and provide an all new cockpit and external model using modern rendering techniques like deferred shading and physical based rendering. We also added the option to fly two versions of the P-51D: the P-51D-25-NA and the P-51D-30-NA that were used in the European and Pacific theaters of operation.

With development ongoing on a new damage model system, new WWII aircraft like the Fw 190 A8 and P-47D, new dogfight AI, new World War II maps, period World War II radio communications, and a dynamic campaign, take advantage of these great savings.
