"Yoink!" That's the imaginary sound we hear when a long-planned feature in PlanetSide 2 gets yanked from an upcoming patch to the game. Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley tweeted yesterday that following community feedback, consumable, class-boosting implants would not be part of the free-to-play MMO shooter's next update.

Implants, mentioned by developers since at least January of this year, would have added a variety of ability boosts to the FPS as part of Game Update 13. Proposals for implants included consumables that would silence footsteps, reduce fall damage, and increase spotting sensitivity. The effect of these items on gameplay balance has been a topic of discussion in the PlanetSide 2 community ahead of the patch release. The implants were apparently purchasable with real money on a recent test server presentation of the game's new features.

Much of what PlanetSide 2 does so well relies on the way it manages confrontations between its three factions of players. The game feels immense, but it also gives you, the lone soldier, clear ways to make a difference for your team. With "player-driven content" so vital to the PlanetSide 2 experience, it's no surprise that an issue affecting the abilities of individual characters to change the flow of battle has been the most discussed topic on the game's July "roadmap."

GU13 should go live on July 24. For the full list of proposed changes, go here.

Thanks, Polygon.

The only buffs I want to see are helmet polishersThe news that Planetside 2 was about to introduce Implants slid past me, like a stealthy and handsome Vanu sniper. The time-limited buffs would have slipped into a new loadout slot, enabling non-class based powers for a brief time. They could be bought with both Station Cash and certs, which is where the problem lies. Lets take a look at one of the powers that SOE had planned to implement, that anyone could buy: “Enhanced Targeting – Enables an enhanced targeting HUD that displays the health of any spotted enemy that you target; it also increases the range of the IFF system from 8 meters to 25 meters”. Other buffs included auto-spotting enemies that damage you, and being hidden from enemy sensors. WHAT? People can buy that? Luckily, that was the same reaction that a lot of the community had, and Sony heard their outcries. The Implants have been yoinked from the next update. (more…)

The evil empire has risen once again, and must be crushed under the magnificence of our all-encompassing purpleness! Yes, Chris from PC Gamer threw down the gauntlet and told me to “bring it on” and “put my Station cash where my air-filter DLC is”. Something like that, anyway. The point is: you are all contractually obligated to appear in Planetside 2 on the 21st of July. Since it’s free to play, you have no excuse. No, not even that.

Same drill as usual: it’ll be from 7pm UK on Miller. To the forums!

*claps*

Auraxis has fallen into night. We are Vanu (All hail Vanu), a small group of us are purplishly sneaking through the bracken. The New Conglomerate base is quiet, with all the meatbags snoring arrogantly, believing in their dominance. Never believe the map! Us Vanu, handsomest and best of all the races and cloaked in the night’s purple hue, approach. The quiet is deafening, the darkness near complete. Only the glow of war on the horizon flickers. We freeze: I spy a lone guard patrolling on the edge of the Amp station. The fools! I can destroy their defenses with a well-placed bullet. I steady my aim and fire.

FASHOOOOM! KRSHHHHHHHH! WHEEEEEEEEE! SPLOK!

And that’s why I shouldn’t be allowed to buy Planetside 2‘s firework gun. (more…)

For most multiplayer FPS's a 96-player map would be considered pretty big. For PlanetSide 2 and it's continent wide military manoeuvres, it's a vast reduction. It's one being made with a view to better supporting e-sports - reducing the size of the conflict to something more suited to competitive play. SOE have produced a video showcasing the first planned map, Nexus.

From the video's description: "The vast interior areas are an ideal layout for team battle. Beware of ambushes in the frozen canyon, intense infantry action in the ice cave and fierce tank battles in the alpine forest."

This actually strikes me as a good idea. E-sports aside, it'll be nice to have a dedicated arena for those times when you're not looking to engage in the constant ebb and flow of each faction's continental tide. Part of me suspects that this is also a move prompted by PlanetSide 2's upcoming PS4 release - adding in a more familiar multiplayer experience as a way to build up towards the main action. As long as the resulting mode also works as an enjoyable respite, then it's a welcome addition, whatever the reasons.

A release date is yet to be announced for the Nexus update.

I'd have called it 'Nap Island' and covered it in beds.Like Snake Island, Pulsing Wart Peninsula, and Angry Infected Monkey Lake, I can’t help but feel that PlanetSide 2′s upcoming Battle Islands have had their fate decided for them. You know what you’re getting into when you visit Snake Island, and the same goes for the newest chunks of Auraxis. The Battle Islands have twin purposes: giving the game smaller maps that are separated from the larger continents for e-sports purposes, for events and the like, but for the live game they’ll also act as mid-point maps that link the continents together. The name that’s been given to this first lovely, foresty chunk of land: Nexus. Want to see it in action? (more…)

Top news for bossy players: PlanetSide 2 will be introducing user generated missions. SOE's MMOFPS is set to give those carrying the correct command certs the ability to specify objectives, letting others browse and pick a player-made mission that takes their fancy. It certainly sounds a more elegant system then spamming "ATTACK THE THINGS!" in chat.

"PlanetSide 2 has always embraced the idea that the core game content is totally player driven," writes developer 'JGood', "so the mission system just takes that idea a little further. We want to give players (with appropriate command certs) the ability to create mission hotspots on the map that can be viewed by their entire Empire."

SOE have provided examples of how the system might push players towards participating in missions:

Air Strikes at location:

XP bonus to ground kills/assists while in aircraft at this location
Greatly increased gunner XP bonus (for Lib Pilots)
Greatly increased XP bonus for Sunderer kills

Deployment to location:

Large XP increase to deploy-bonuses
Large XP increase to AMS spawn bonuses
XP bonus for repairs to any deployment vehicle (Galaxy & Sunderer)
XP bonus to squad-deploy bonuses
Increased weight on Instant-action values

SOE plan to release the new mission system in August.

Thanks, RPS.

The mission: come get somePlanetside 2′s missions are pretty general. They’re mostly focused around the push and pull of attack and defense at specific spots on the map. That’s fine for just getting teams to fight each other, but it doesn’t take advantage of Auraxis. All those valleys and mountains, all the connecting roads, all that space can feel unused. While there’s probably an argument to be made for letting the game generate smaller missions for people to take part in away from the larger territory control meta-game, SOE are doing it differently: soon they’ll allowing players to request support via player-generated missions, mini-alerts that will create hotspots on the map for players to drop into. So it turns out a big bunch of the RPS Giraffe-based Planetside 2 outfit are here at Rezzed, and tomorrow they’re all going to be playing the game from the show from 1pm. We need you to come and fight with an against them, as onlookers gawp at their plasma-toting prowess. Jump in tomorrow afternoon and give them hell/heals.

Fight!
