This is part 2 of the Producer's Letter that we first shared with you last week. It’s time to get a first look at the future of Realm!
MotMG moved to September
A lot of things have been happening this year. We are only in the middle of it and we already released a new client, a new class, and we are about to release the biggest and hardest fight in the Realm. But our game is not the only place where things have taken a crazy turn. The pandemic of COVID-19 and all the chaos around it affected us all and changed our lives in many ways. We needed to adjust to it and we needed to do it fast.
Now, as the world has finally started to adjust to our new reality, we want to readjust as well. All of the above made us realize that the best move for players as well as ourselves will be to postpone MotMG this year for one month. It will give us more time to securely prepare more and better content for this great celebration and will give you more time to enjoy Oryx 3. But make no mistake, we will still be actively adding new content to the game! For big changes, you will need to wait until September. That begs the question...
What are the big plans for the future?
Our design and development teams are already working on plenty of new features, many of which we want to release for MotMG 2020. Here are some previews:
Item Forge (UT Exchange System)
The first concept of the system we created in September, but we weren’t happy with the concept and couldn’t make it properly due to the halting of Flash development. We made a decision to postpone it and release it on Exalt. Right now we are finishing the design phase of the feature and will soon enter the development phase. There are still some decisions to be made, but we want to share an early mock up:
Item Forge will be much more important as we will also plan to introduce…
IC/OOC (In-Combat/Out-of-Combat)
It has been a while since our last public testing session with IC/OOC functionality. We have been looking into feedback and adjusting some numbers ever since. We know how big this change will be and how it will affect gameplay, and that is why we want to do it in a very conscious way.
This system will come alongside with some major balancing changes, so you can expect another public testing session to gather even more feedback. Besides just balancing, we are also looking into the UI part of this system - how to present in and out of combat status. Here are some concepts:
But this is not the only system we want to introduce! We are also working on...
Exaltation
Exaltation is a new system of extended progression of characters as a long term set of goals beyond reaching 8/8 stats maxed on a character. It is a system based on endgame dungeons and will provide some extra benefits based on class, weapon type, and overall progression. We don’t want to share too many details as this is still a work in progress, but here are some mock ups that can give you general idea of the feature:
But new systems are not the only thing we are developing...
New Fame Distribution
Fame has long been an imperfect system despite being intended as the main compensation for death, a form of progression and consolation to give players a bit more of an edge after every major death. But we realize that this system has aged poorly and does not hold up in its current form.
Meaningful XP sources are few and far between without scaling properly to content difficulty (comparing basic godlands hunting to the array of dungeons more challenging and complex than that, as an example) and fame bonuses often reward inaction more than varied accomplishments.
It’s been planned for a very long time, but we are finally moving forward with a fame rework to the two core aspects of the system: XP distribution and fame bonuses. XP distribution, while a big project to thoroughly review and change, is fairly straightforward. Rather than having a few random outlier dungeons like the Ice Cave give noticeably high amounts of XP, we want everything to scale in that sense. Tougher dungeons should give meaningful fame for clearing, bigger bounties from bosses and quests, and a reason to participate for enhanced XP rates.
Fame bonuses provide an even more exciting area for expansion, allowing us to cast a huge net of short and long term character goals, rather than a couple dozen checkboxes without much to seek afterwards. It’s still too early for us to share a complete table of planned bonuses (as eager as we are to do so), but we do want to give you an idea of the design goals and a handful of examples.
We want to stress that these concepts are not final. The numbers shared in particular are only examples and may not reflect the final version. Not everything listed here may represent what we release, but they are all under heavy consideration among many more ideas.
Replace/remove restrictive bonuses (the do-not bonuses)
Don’t kill cubes -> Kill as many as possible
Don’t teleport -> Teleport a lot
Don’t drink pots -> Max your stats
Don’t fire shots -> Fire at will!
Replace ratio bonuses, such as Slayer of the Gods or Sharpshooter, measuring flat numbers instead
Introduce more bonuses and split them into tiers for a mix of short and long term goals, as well as helps newer players experience more bonuses
Oryx Slayer requires you to kill Oryx once, however we’d like to offer additional value in further kills
Doer of Deeds requires you to complete 1000 quests, it would now be turned into 5 tiers:
a) Pursuer of Deeds: 25 quests completed b) Doer of Deeds: 100 quests completed c) Performer of Deeds: 250 quests completed d) Achiever of Deeds: 500 quests completed e) Master of Deeds: 1000 quests completed
Individual dungeon completion bonuses for every dungeon
More dungeon collection bonuses in addition to Tunnel Rat
Explosive Journey for all Kabam era dungeons
Travel of the Decade for all Deca era dungeons
First steps for all early game dungeons
King of the Mountains for all typical godlands dungeons
Conqueror of the Realm for all encounter dungeons
Enemy of the Court for all court boss dungeons
Hero of the Nexus for all non-seasonal dungeons
Realm of the Mad God for all dungeons
And many more, so feel free to share any collection category ideas of your own!
Expand tags like “Cube” and “God” to include every killable enemy under some kind of label, making every monster kill worth something (think labels like Beast, Humanoid, and Grotesque)
One of our goals when coming up with many of those changes was to keep existing characters under consideration, so as to ensure the time and dedication spent on living characters right now will not be for naught. We’ll have more specific information as the system develops and solidifies, but we want to assure that what you do with characters right now will still matter.
Expanding fame bonuses from roughly 20 to over 400 takes a lot of number balancing, so many things can change over time. However, we hope that these examples are exciting enough to think about more kinds of long term goals characters can have while rewarding all kinds of varied play. With a more balanced fame economy, we can start safely using the currency in more meaningful ways again!
And if this is still not enough and you will want a break from Oryx 3 and his sidekicks, we are also preparing...
High Tech Terror
High Tech Terror is an upcoming boss dungeon, starring a certain purple creature who has been left on the cutting room floor of game development since 2012. While this fight is not on the same level of difficulty or scale as Oryx’s Sanctuary, it will demonstrate a variety of new projectile functions that were never before possible, requiring heroes to read patterns and anticipate attacks in all new ways. Be on the lookout for more info and previews of this advanced adversary.
And for those of you who admire some good quality of life features…
New Vault UI & New Vault Type
One of the QoL features we have talked about in the past was unified Vault UI. As Exalt is live, we came back to this idea. We want to make usage of the Vault easier with the end of Flash, having all items available in one place with sorting and filtering options so that searching for specific items is much easier and faster.
But revamping the old Vault is not our only plan for it. We know that with the end of Flash, usage of mules will be much harder. This is why we want to introduce a new type of Vault which will enable players to store much more items. We are now in the process of evaluating what people keep on mules and how we can make their life easier. We will give you more information as soon as we can.
While waiting for all of these big features, we are not stopping introducing smaller features and content too!
Small QoL Features + UGC Dungeons
We want to introduce a lot of small QoL features, some of which are already implemented (loot preview, realm queues, realm timers). Others we are still working on include player visibility enhancements and specialized boss health bars.
But our team is not the only ones putting in a lot of work lately. Our amazing UGC members are working on some new stuff as well. There are a few new dungeons that are being developed, and you can expect at least one of them to hit production pretty soon!
With this opportunity we want to thank our UGC/artists for helping us out with various projects and sprites! We also want to say a big "thank you" to our lovely testers, who have been by our side through it all. With their feedback and suggestions, we've managed to release some quality content to the game and to catch the meanest of bugs out there!
Let’s also not forget the Discord and subreddit moderators who have been doing an awesome job to keep you updated on various things and to entertain you with fun and artistic events! From the whole Deca Team, thank you contributors, moderators, and thank you Saturn for the mind-blowing piece of art! We are more excited than ever before about the future of Realm, and the incredible acts of this community make it all possible.
We hope that the first part of the Producer’s Letter we shared with you on Thursday last week answered at least some of your questions. We understand that there are some things to work on in terms improving of Realm Exalt to its best version before officially releasing it. As it was already mentioned, we are focused on the disconnection issues that a lot of you are still experiencing. Our developers are doing their best to find the solution to this bugger.
In the meantime, on Friday you had a glimpse of a new bonus program for you!
Little Notes to Heaven ST Bonus Program
It’s the first ever F2P Program, which allows you to get the new Heavenly Angelic Bard Set! Among other rewards, like a Character Slot Unlocker, is also the winner of the last art contest - the Skeleton Trumpeter Bard Skin!
And how will you progress in this program? Well...
Tokens
Via the Music Note tokens, of course! All of this is dedicated to the Bard after all. The Music Notes tokens will drop in the Court of Oryx Dungeons, in the Realm (bosses), Shatters, Fungal Cavern/Crystal Cavern, Nest, Lost Halls/Void/Cultist Hideout and from both Oryx 1 and Oryx 2.
One token will be worth 7 points which will be added towards the Bonus Program upon consumption.
Free Pack
To give you a head start, you can find 4 stacks of Music Note x10 (among other things) in the Free Angelic Bard Pack which will be waiting for you once the Bonus Program is live and will be ripe for the taking until July 1st, 2020 at 12:00 PM UTC!
In that package, you will also find Char Slot Coupon x2 and Chest Coupon x2. Here is the twist: if you wait a bit longer, you will get the missing Char Slot Coupon x3 and Chest Coupon x3 from another upcoming free pack (totally not for O3). If you gather both sets, voilà - a full Character Slot and Vault Slot Unlocker!
Join the triumph of the skies!
Mad God to hit Exalt
Later this year, His Majesty Oryx (the 3rd) 3 will finally challenge all of you to a (fairly unfair) duel! Before that, you have to prepare for this epic battle - gather the Shield, Sword and Helmet Runes before that to unlock the gateway to his sanctuary!
Starting Wednesday:
These runes will start dropping from their respective dungeons:
Shield Rune - Secluded Thicket, Puppet Master's Encore, Lair of Shaitan, and Cnidarian Reef, Realm bosses
Sword Rune - The Nest, Fungal Cavern, The Shatters, Crystal Cavern, Realm bosses, Oryx 1, and Oryx 2
Helmet Rune - Lost Halls, Cultist Hideout, The Void, Realm bosses, Oryx 1, and Oryx 2
And until the release, the Keyper will also be there for easier access to the dungeons.
Oryx 3 will be here before you know it… what are you waiting for?
More details and Bonus Program Q and A {LINK REMOVED}here!
It has been a while since our last producer’s letter, and a whole lot has happened since then. No doubt the biggest event was the release of Exalt to a wide audience. On March 19th we released the Supporter Beta, which soon after was followed by the Open Beta. Thanks to your participation in the Open Beta, our development team was able to fix issues that were reported to us by the community.
There’s a lot to address. So much, in fact, that we’ve split this letter in two. This half will cover the most current news, discuss recent hot topics within the community, and cover some team information. The second part will come shortly after this one, and will focus on giving a first look at several major pieces of upcoming content to anticipate. We’re itching to get into that exciting information, but we have some more serious things to address first.
Exalt Stability and Disconnections
We are very aware that there are still some stability issues, which we are working toward resolving in each release. This is particularly the case with disconnection issues, which we see have been a source of trouble for some players trying to play on the Exalt client.
We are putting increased developer resources into stability due to its importance to Exalt’s full official release. Since this is not a quick fix, we have escalated it to our absolute top priority. We will ensure that these problems are resolved for Exalt’s official release and not leave anyone behind involuntarily for the jump from Flash to Unity. Stay tuned for continuous information on the status of fixing these disconnections, as it is our number one goal.
In the meantime, our other teams have not stopped working on new features and content for the game! The full concentration of our Unity developers does not stop teams like our designers from focusing on their own exciting progress. We will continue doing so as we believe better days for Realm are still ahead of us. And with that in mind...
Oryx 3
As we contemplated what we could do alongside Exalt’s release, there was only one suitable answer. The next generation of Realm’s platform needs the next generation of Oryx! Such a heavily requested expansion to a part of the game untouched since 2012 was only fitting for our favorite Mad God.
The entire design team has been working on this project for over four months now. We sincerely hope that when the portal to Oryx’s Sanctuary is revealed, you will be impressed and happy with what we achieved. But Oryx is too smart to come alone. If you missed the past public testing session or want extra information, we suggest checking the rest of our ongoing Exalt blog, where we have been revealing and discussing each of Oryx’s new minibosses and even more details!
We want Oryx 3 to be another great endgame experience. At the same time we want it to be more special to access than any other dungeon in the Realm, this will allow us to be very generous in terms of his drop rates. We want people who are able to access it and defeat it to feel rewarded for this hard experience.
Another aspect we want to achieve with Oryx 3 is community cooperation. Oryx 3 will be only possible to access if players who defeated Oryx 2 use three Runes: Sword, Shield, and Helmet. We want the community to gather these runes together, so in the end everyone can benefit from accessing Oryx’s Sanctuary. Over 3000 Runes have already dropped in the game! If you don’t have them yet, don’t worry, they will start dropping in their respective monsters on June 24th:
Sword Rune: The Nest, The Shatters, Abandoned Mineshaft (Fungal/Crystal Cavern)
Shield Rune: Realm encounters, Court of Oryx
Helmet Rune: Lost Halls, Cultist Hideout, The Void
If the Runes are not enough of a motivation to hunt these monsters, we will also drop special tokens which will give you points to progress in an upcoming Bonus Program. The more points you get, the more and better rewards you get - Shards of the Intern, a Character Slot, new skins, and a brand new ST set for Bard on top! So if you were planning to rejoin the fight for Oryx 3, don’t wait! The hunt for runes and tokens begins June 24th! And it starts with a FREE pack, so make sure to check the in-game Shop!
And remember, Oryx 3 will be exclusively available on Exalt. And some of you ask...
Why are we releasing content only available on Exalt?
Flash development is stopped
With the release of the Exalt Supporter Beta, we stopped developing any new features for Flash. With the limited amount of developers, we decided there is no point in spending their time on working on a platform that will be obsolete in the next few months, and instead concentrate on developing things on a new platform. Anything that affects both platforms (like the Realm queue) we implemented on both platforms in the simplest ways, but once Flash is gone we plan on working on such features with more polish.
Some effects are only possible on Unity
Some of the effects used for Oryx 3 were only possible on Unity and we did not want to limit ourselves for what is intended to be an unrestricted, next-gen experience. While features like the Bard class can at least be displayed and understood by Flash, brand new features would be entirely incompatible, such as exotic new types of projectile movements will enable us to get more creative than ever with enemy design.
We want to inform all players about Unity with a natural transition
As we were releasing the Exalt Supporter Beta, we knew not all players will transition immediately to Exalt for a few reasons:
People are used to playing on Flash
People will have problems with playing on the Unity client
People will not know about the Exalt Client
For those of you who are reading, it probably seems impossible that someone does not know about Exalt, because it means you are following all our updates. But although the majority of the community is active on Discord and/or Reddit, there are also a lot of people who are just playing the game and not following social media or information we post in game. Those are the ones we try to inform about new clients with in game content that is only available on Exalt. We hope they will see new stuff and get excited enough to check out Unity for themselves!
Just to show you some numbers: When we released the Exalt Open Beta only 58% of players tried the new client. For the next few weeks the number of players using Exalt fluctuated between 55-57%. With the release of the Bard, this number jumped to 72%. Right now we have 22% currently playing players who have never even tried the Exalt client. We hope that with the release of Oryx 3 and the official release even more people will switch to Exalt. So...
What is the plan for Flash?
As mentioned before, we want the transition to go smoothly. We are constantly looking at the number of players that are using Exalt and we will adjust shutting down the Flash client to this. Keep in mind that the longer we keep Flash the harder it is for us to adjust and optimize Exalt.
The Flash client is only slowing us down in many aspects of development, as it not only resolves several technical conflicts causing unnecessary issues, but also removes the restrictions it has imposed for new content and features (such as the backpack trading panel, which cannot exist until Flash’s structure is gone). That is why the latest we plan to keep Flash is the end of MotMG.
Boating and Banwaves
We are aware that fame abuse exploits were a problem in the Realm for a while. Not so long ago, we introduced some server side fixes, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to prevent hacked clients from still abusing the system. This is why we decided to investigate this problem extremely thoroughly in a number of ways to ensure accurate, precise consequences. We just recently found over 150 accounts which were using third party software to get extreme amounts of fame. There wasn’t any other fair option than banning and fame wiping these accounts.
We noticed some of them weren’t happy with the decision, but we want to be clear - we will not tolerate boating or any other form of breaking the ToS, and in the future we will try to eliminate as many as possible. Going back to the boating problem - this was just the first wave of bans connected to this problem. We plan to investigate more, so you can expect more bans for people who have been exploiting the fame system.
There have also been some concerns raised about idler bots in trains and our stance on people involved in those trains. We take these on a case by case basis due to the circumstances varying too greatly for any definitive criteria, as that leads to loopholes and technicalities that exploiters are quick to jump on. We don’t want to:
A: Blindly ban players who have participated in a train which was “compromised” without actual reason for violation other than “someone was setting up idlers.”
B: Allow actual exploiters to have their trains run with idlers under the excuse of “someone set them up and tried to troll us but we don’t want to stop the train because of them” and actually have their idler train protected.
We will look into each individual case/report/incident and make sure we firstly protect players who potentially might have been targeted by a troll, and secondly to not allow people to hide behind said trolls as excuses to run their trains undisturbed. We’d also like to note (small spoiler for part 2 of this letter) that a major fame system rework is in progress, which means exploit methods like these have their days numbered no matter what.
We are also taking stronger and more active actions against cheaters overall. The Unity client enables us to spot cheaters and dupers much more reliably and take action. We know results are not always publicly visible instantly, but we want to reaffirm how seriously we are taking cheating on Exalt and the kinds of measures we have to stop cheaters better than we ever could on Flash.
There are a few more things we want to cover in this half of the letter before focusing on future content in part 2.
Exalt will not be playable through Kongregate
With the end of the Adobe Flash client as technology, it saddens us from DECA to inform you that we have to stop supporting our game on the Kongregate platform. It wasn’t an easy decision for us as we were present and proud to be on this platform for over 8 years, along with many players who got introduced to the game through it. With Exalt we needed to concentrate on two platforms: standalone client and Steam.
With that being said, we are not leaving our Kongregate players high and dry. Our customer support team has already transferred thousands of accounts from Kongregate to a standalone client since the announcement of our Exalt Supporter Beta. We will be doing it until all tickets in this matter are resolved. So if you are a Kongregate player and you haven’t sent a ticket yet, please do so. We can promise that the Flash client will be available until all players are transferred. Once again we want to thank Kongregate for all the great years of cooperation and wish them all the best in the future - hopefully working with them again on Kartridge going forward.
Silex leaving the DECA Realm Team
Lastly, we are sad to announce that after 4 years, Silex, one of our core designers, will be leaving our team. It was a great pleasure to work with him. The game as well as DECA owes him a lot for all the hard work he put into development of this project. As one of the founding members here from the very start, his impact has been essential to the game’s growth. Here are some words he wanted to share with you before leaving:
Hi all,
I want to announce to you that I’ll be leaving DECA Games in June. After 4 years on Realm I felt it was the right moment for me to explore new opportunities and challenges.
When I started working on Realm in 2016, what really impressed me was you, the community. Especially how passionate you guys are. But together we made the game better and gave it a future that reaches further than Flash.
I also leave knowing the game is in good hands with a brilliant team who works hard to deliver exciting content. I am looking forward to playing the future versions of Realm.
Thank you
Though Silex is departing, the Realm team as a whole has been growing in recent months! Almost every facet of the team (design, Unity development, operations, and even customer support) have received new hires to strengthen our workpower for Unity. We’ve been putting this to use in quite a few exciting ways, which we’ll be exploring in detail in part 2 of this letter very soon! We can’t wait to give you a first look at what’s coming to Realm, so don’t miss it!
A while ago in a Discord poll, we asked you about what kind of event you want to have. Many of you participated in the poll and we are thankful for it! With 32.55% of the votes, you decided to have an Event Quest at the Tinkerer this week.
