Beyond Good and Evil™

Holding a camera in your hands has a subtle effect on the nature of reality around you, I reckon. And that's true even when the reality around you isn't that real. In the Earth Temple, somewhere across the Great Sea, I once asked Medli to move to the left a little, just so I could get a picture of her in front of a huge golden sun of some kind.

I could not ask Medli, of course. I had to nudge her, and to move around in a way that meant she might follow and stop where I wanted her to stop. Then I raised the camera - wood and brass, I can almost remember the weight of it, the warmth of varnish and the chill of metal - and I took the picture.

Medli's name has been long forgotten. I had to look it up just now, ditto the Earth Temple. But twenty years after the fact I can remember the moment. I remember, really, two things about The Wind Waker, the glorious Zelda game in which Medli lives. The first thing is looking through a telescope on Dragon Roost Island and seeing a distant toothpick of stone jutting from the water with a long-neck bird perched in a nest on top. A sense of observing from a way off, almost illicit. The second is getting Medli to move for the picture. The Picto Box! And both memories, I now think, are probably about the same stuff - the way a world surprised me by feeling real.

Welcome to another week of Five of the Best, a series where we celebrate the overlooked parts of video games, like hands! And potions! And dinosaurs! And shops! They're the kinds of things etched unwittingly into memory, like an essential ingredient of a favourite dish you could never put a finger on. And I want to spark discussion, so please share memories as they flash into your mind. Today, another five. The topic...

Health pick-ups! Oh how very specific - but I need to be. I'm not talking about health systems but the things you pick up to heal yourself. Used to be all games did it this way, but then Halo came along with its recharging health and all of a sudden everyone wanted the same. Now that feels like the norm.

But there are old-fashioned health systems out there (and they'll probably take offence at being called old-fashioned, so I'm sorry, I don't mean it in a bad way!). I still see Overwatch health packs when I close my eyes at night, and potions, which I've written a whole Five of the Best on, are a dime a dozen in RPGs. They're still out there, still crucial to how we get through games.

Ubisoft has confirmed that Michel Ancel's very-long-awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2 won't be putting in an appearance at this year's E3 - but will instead be getting another showing during a livestream scheduled for next week.

Livestreams have been Ubisoft's preferred means of drip-feeding Beyond Good & Evil 2 information in recent times, with the publisher even using the opportunity last year to offer up the very first footage of the game in action. Subsequent livestreams haven't been quite as exciting, admittedly, and those looking forward to seeing more in-game footage probably shouldn't get their hopes up for next week's offering.

Ubisoft's livestream announcement specifically notes that the team "look[s] forward to sharing more with you, including new gameplay footage, when the time is right".

Beyond Good and Evil™

Last week, Beyond Good & Evil 2 creator Michel Ancel told fans to expect a playable beta of the game towards the end of 2019. It was disappointing news, perhaps, for those eager to explore the kind of worlds glimpsed in last year's flashy E3 debut trailer. But it was also news which should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone following the game's still-early progress.

What sort of game will Beyond Good & Evil 2 be? It's still hard to say - a year on from the tech demo shown behind closed doors at E3 2017. Over the 12 months, Ubisoft Montpellier has periodically streamed updates to its loyal followers on Twitch, but these have mostly just been opportunities to share concept art and answer questions. For this year's E3, Ubisoft Montpellier packed a proper gameplay demo in its suitcase, one which showed off co-op play and some early combat and exploration systems - but it was another glimpse which left us with probably more questions than answers.

I'm excited for Beyond Good & Evil 2's story after hearing how the dots connect between the two flashy CGI trailers shown thus far. Likewise, I'm delighted by this year's confirmation BG&E1 stars Jade and Pey'J are back for definite. For those in need of a recap, last year's trailer saw our crew of heroes steal a set of coordinates and set off for something named Moksha's Gate, a mysterious object described by Ubisoft Montpellier as "a door in space", led by a captain who shared a familial resemblance to Jade. This year, we caught up with the crew later on, with the captain mysteriously missing, as Jade herself pops up as an antagonist and seemingly ends the mission to Moksha's Gate for good.

A beta version of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is due for release towards the end of 2019, creator Michel Ancel has said.

Ubisoft Montpellier's ambitious, currently-half-built open world multiplayer space opera thing got another showing at E3 this year - where we were treated to around 30 minutes of gameplay behind closed doors.

We'll have more on what we saw shortly, but as impressive as BG&E2's tech currently is - and as lovely as that CGI trailer reintroducing BG&E1's Pey'J and Jade was - it was clear the game still had a long way to go.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 will include the main characters of Beyond Good & Evil, Ubisoft has just confirmed during its E3 press conference. It's a huge surprise, seeing as both were kept out of the game's reveal a year ago.

Jade is described as an antagonist to the game's main cast. She's younger and fierce looking (BG&E2 is a prequel) and, even more surprisingly, appears to be allied with the BG&E enemies, the Domz.

Pey'J is also back, as your ship's cook. He also looks a little younger.

Fans got a first glimpse at Beyond Good and Evil 2 gameplay last night in a developer livestream filled with information about the work-in-progress game.

The footage shows multiplayer spaceship combat, on-foot melee fighting and sweary monkey shipmate Knox in action.

It was the highlight of a half hour Twitch stream which featured creator Michel Ancel and others discussing the game and its development.

Ubisoft has emerged victorious in the long-running battle to stave off a hostile Vivendi takeover.

The publisher of Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six and Rayman has, over the last year, looked under real threat of being acquired.

Month on month, Vivendi steadily bought up shares until it finally owned 27.3 per cent of Ubisoft capital - close enough that it would soon be required to launch a formal takeover bid.
