Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition - Ink

Earlier this week, we released Sim Update 14, the latest major upgrade to Microsoft Flight Simulator. We are pleased to see that sim pilots are enjoying the many bug fixes, improvements, and new features, with the new atmospheric colorization and the Working Title Cirrus SR22T G6 being highlights of this release.

Unfortunately, the launch of Sim Update 14 did not go as smoothly as we would have liked and our players expect. The initial release on December 5th was marred by download issues that prevented many players from installing and enjoying the new update for a period of about six hours while our support teams worked to resolve the issue.

While the incident is now fully resolved and players are able to download and install the update normally, this is the second upgrade in recent months (along with Sim Update 13 in September) where players experienced download issues. We know this has affected your trust in us, so in the interest of full transparency, we have written an incident recap report outlining what happened to cause the download issues with the SU_13 and SU_14 releases and the steps we took to both resolve the incidents in the moment and prevent them from happening again.

We understand that this experience was frustrating for many players who were eager to jump into Sim Update 14 at its release, and we truly appreciate everyone for their continued support. Thank you all, and we look forward to what is to come in the new year.

RELEASE NOTES 1.35.21.0
If you are playing on PC, outdated packages in your community folder may have an unexpected impact on the title’s performance and behavior.
If you suffer from stability issues or long loading times, move your community package(s) to another folder before relaunching the title.
How to install a new update safely

NEW CONTENT/FEATURES
  • Added flight plan assistance setting for ATC in the user experience assistance settings so that users can request the ATC to favor their flight plan or world map flight settings over the current conditions. This assistance is set to “Active” by default. Active: ATC will set the active runway and approach for the departure and arrival airport based on the users flight plan or settings in the world map. Deactivated: ATC will set the active runway and approach based on current conditions only.
  • ATC now clears a step to the next altitude some time before arriving at the previously cleared altitude, rather than once arrived at the previously cleared altitude. (Next step is issued when at 2000FT from cleared altitude rather than 250FT from cleared altitude).
  • ATC Vectoring bug fixes:
    1. Now assigning the correct clearance when the first two waypoints were one over the other,
    2. Now assigning a new vector & clearance every time the user asks the ATC for a new vector.
  • Added completely new Cirrus SR22T G6 model with custom engine simulation, book-accurate performance, and extensive Perspective Plus NXi features.

Our next Developer Livestream is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29 at 10:30am Pacific Standard Time (1830 UTC) on our official Twitch channel. Thank you to everyone who submitted questions in advance! We are currently reviewing all your submissions and tabulating the most commonly-asked questions.

While our panel will only be addressing serious questions during the livestream, we appreciated some of your more humorous submissions! There was one question in particular that we wanted to answer early. To the person who asked us to state the airspeed velocity of an unladen Cessna: according to the Pilot's Operating Handbook, the Cessna 172 has a never exceed speed of 163 knots, a cruise speed of 122 knots, and a maneuvering speed of 90 knots (at 1900 lbs gross weight). We hope this adequately answers your question!

Please note that there will not be a Marketplace update next week (Thursday, November 23). This date is the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, so most of the team will be out of office spending time with their families. The next Marketplace update will be on Thursday, November 30.

The Saab B 17A, a pillar of Swedish aerospace history from the early 1940s, is now available for Microsoft Flight Simulator users to explore the skies.

BORN OF SWEDISH INNOVATION
The B 17A, a Swedish single-engine, two-seat dive bomber, traces its lineage to the birth of Saab (Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolag), one of the world’s leading aerospace and defense firms. The Saab 17, of which the B 17A is a derivative, was the first aircraft produced by Saab, and as such, it was integral to the early growth of the company.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition - Jayneivana

The Microsoft Flight Simulator team is excited to feature this storied part of the globe with sweeping improvements in this latest release. World Update XV covers Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and also includesthe Faroe Islands and Greenland (both self-governing countries within the Kingdom of Denmark). Developed in conjunction with Microsoft partners Bing Maps, Vexcel, Maxar, Gaya Simulations, Orbx, and Kjetil Garpestad, this update promises to thrill the Microsoft Flight Simulator audience with its range of enhancements:
  • 90 hand-made points of interest.
  • 10 TIN (triangulated irregular network) cities.
  • 5 hand-crafted airports.
  • Broad-based, high-resolution geographic updates using significantly enhanced DEMs (digital elevation models) in Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
  • Fresh aerial imagery and satellite data across the entire region.

Some of the Points of Interest (POIs) include Denmark’s Farø Bridges, Gråsten Palace, and Ribe Cathedral; Finland’s Bengtskär Lighthouse, Kökar church, and Tähtiniemi Bridge; Greenland’s Arctic Station, EastGRIP, and Summit Station; Iceland’s Knarrarós Lighthouse, Laugardalsvöllur Stadium, and Ólafsvíkurkirkja Church; Norway’s Andenes Lighthouse, Gjemnessund Bridge, and Svalbard Global Seed Vault; and Sweden’s Älvsborg Bridge, Arctic Space Centre, and Aurora Sky Station.

The TIN cities in World Update XV include five in Denmark: Aarhus, Copenhagen, Frederikssund, Odense, and Roskilde; four in Sweden: Gothenburg, Linkoping, Malmö, and Visby; and Norway’s Oslo. In addition, Gaya simulations created a splendid array of airports: Iceland’s Akureyri Airport (BIAR), Norway’s Mo i Rana Airport (ENRA), Sweden’s Kiruna Airport (ESNQ), and Finland’s Ivalo Airport (EFIV). Kjetil Garpestad created a stunningly realistic rendition of Leknes Airport (ENLK).

World Update XV: Nordics & Greenland also brings simmers ten exciting activities that will inspire and challenge, including:

  • Four discovery flights: Bergen (Norway), Gothenburg (Sweden), the Faroe Islands (Denmark), and Reykjavík (Iceland).
  • Three landing challenges: Akureyri Airport (BIAR), a famous challenge in northern Iceland; Ekeby Airport (ESSC), an epic sailplane challenge in Sweden; and a bold challenge at Norway’s Mo i Rana Airport (ENRA).
  • Three bush trips: the Baltic Coast of Denmark and Sweden which traverses some of Europe’s most exquisite coastal landscapes; the adventurous Greenland Exploration; and Spitsbergen, which begins with an exploration of Norway’s Spitsbergen, then crosses open water to visit northern mainland Norway.

World Update XV: Nordics & Greenland is available FREE to all owners of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Ensure that your simulator is updated to version 1.34.16.0 and download World Update XV. The sky is calling!
