The tie that blinds.

Good morning! I became sick and (didn’t) almost perish but now I’m back and, my, what tumultuous events I missed in my absence. When I saw the news that Max Payne 3 had been delayed I fell backwards out of my chair in slow motion, pumping round after round of screaming lead through my monitor in anguish and fury while simultaneously having and not having a beard. In the distinctly Woo-less land of drizzle and pies, that action looks a lot more like a gray-faced man going ‘tsk’ and running his hand down his face. Delay or not, the media barrage continues with a new video that highlights animation and targeting. The last one seemed to cover a bit of that as well but here’s more.

Max Payne

How's Max Payne supposed to shoot in May's Max Payne 3? How's a third-person shooter supposed to feel as good to control as a first-person shooter?

Rockstar Games delivers its answers in the video here.

Max Payne 3 Delayed Until MayOriginally planned for a March 2012, Rockstar Games revealed this morning that the game will get a new launch window.

In Max Payne 3, players go to São Paulo, Brazil, where the game is set.

Remedy Entertainment, creators of the original Max Payne, recently said what Rockstar Games has done with Max Payne 3 is brilliant. It does feature what sounds like very cool multiplayer.

The game will be out May 15 in North America on the PS3 and the Xbox 360; its international release is May 18. The PC version will be released May 29 in North America and June 1 internationally.

Max Payne creator Remedy Entertainment has praised Rockstar's upcoming take on the series, and said Max Payne 3 looks "brilliant".

Remedy boss Oskari "Ozz" Hakkinen told Kotaku he was enthusiastic for the Rockstar-developed threequel, due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March.

"We absolutely love what they've done and couldn't be more proud of where the series is headed," Hakkinen said.

"I mean, [Rockstar] don't really make s***ty games, do they?" he continued. "It's as if the Rockstar logo has become this 'seal of quality'."

Alan Wake developer Remedy sold the Max Payne rights to Rockstar's parent Take-Two in 2002. The price? $10 million plus company stock.

Rockstar previously developed console ports of the original Max Payne for PS2, and Max Payne 2 for PS2 and Xbox.

Grand Theft Auto IV Trailer

When you play Grand Theft Auto games, do you ever feel a bit like The Terminator? Walking forward in an ungainly way, absorbing more bullets than a human ought to be able to absorb, shooting cops in the knee with reckless abandon?

YouTube user taltigolt has uploaded this video of the "Terminator T1" mod for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, which can be downloaded at gta4-mods.com. The mod appears to graft a T-800 endoskeleton onto Niko Bellic's character model—the result is surprisingly convincing!

I never really thought about how Niko lumbered around like a 2-ton cyborg before, but there you go. He really needs an M79 grenade launcher, though. Next up: Liquid metal mod.

Rockstar Studies the Cops 'n Robbers of São Paulo for Max Payne 3Rockstar Games has posted the first in a series of posts about the creation of their upcoming action game Max Payne 3. In this one, they talk about visiting the city of São Paulo, Brazil, the setting for the game. Both Max Payne and Max Payne 2 had been set in New York.

It's a detailed write-up, and demonstrates how much care Rockstar has put into recreating the vibe of the city. I've had enough gunfighting in virtual New York to last a lifetime, so I'm really looking forward to what Max gets up to in a new, grittier setting.

Grand Theft Auto III

9/11 Changed Grand Theft Auto III, But Only a Tiny Bit It's long been a subject of fan speculation as to how much Rockstar Games changed Grand Theft Auto III in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. In the decade-plus since GTA III came out, rumors have abounded: cut sequences where planes hit buildings, a supposedly removed pair of Twin Towers-style skyscrapers and the erasure of children and school buses.

Some things did change about GTA III after 9/11—changes Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser noted late last year—but not as much as conspiracy theorists would have you believe.

In the latest look back at the creation of GTA III, the New York City-based publisher of Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire runs down how the terrorist attacks on the United States affected the PS2 classic. Rockstar says that the game wound up being only "1% different":

We removed only one mission that referenced terrorists and changed a few other cosmetic details – car details, a couple of [pedestrian] comments, lines of radio dialogue etc – the game came out a very short time later. The biggest change was the US packaging which remixed the previous packaging into what became our signature style – because the previous packaging [which was released as the cover of the game in Europe] was, we felt, too raw after 9/11.

That rawness might have something to do with the explosions happening against a urban back drop. One of the best games ever—which had players engaging in all kinds of criminal mayhem in a virtual homage to New York City—came out only a short while after the greatest tragedy to happen on American soil. The proximity could be little uncomfortable, when you think about it. But Rockstar's comments indicate that the GTA III that players got was 99% the game the developers wanted to deliver.

But the rumored removal of schoolbuses and children? Not true, they point out today. And they say the game definitely didn't have any Twin Towers that needed to be cut.

Other GTA III mysteries that get covered include the ghostly multiplayer menus buried deep in the game's code, why the Dodo plane doesn't fly and the Liberty City bridges and tunnels that lead to nowhere. GTA III conspiracy theories may be fun, but it's far more fascinating to learn about some of the process behind making the game that changed open-world design forever.

The real caption for this one was 'Max waits for the perfect moment to take down a member of the Cracha Preto'. Amaze.

Can digital information really constitute a barrage? I don’t know, but I’m scared. Barrages sound nasty to me, but Rockstar have pledged to send a barrage of Max Payne 3 info at us over “the coming weeks and months.” I’ve looked at the first missive from their asset-cannon, and it’s only some screenshots rather than gunshot or a disease-riddled corpse, so I think we’re safe for now. They’ve also included some captions on these screenshots, which I shall quote verbatim* below. (more…)

Things Get a Lot Darker in These New Max Payne 3 Screens Some of the previous looks at Rockstar's upcoming hard-boiled shooter showed off series hero Max Payne out in the sunny environs of Sao Paulo, vacation shirts and all.

But these new screens put the night back in the franchise's signature noir look, even if Max sports a Hawaiian shirt. You'll see the former NYPD officer stalking members of the various gangs he'll be talking down in the game, along with screen grabs from the game's multiplayer. Max Payne 3 shoots up consoles and PCs in March of this year.
