Let’s Rank The Grand Theft Auto Games, Best to "Worst"We did it with Halo, so let's do it with another of the world's biggest game series, Grand Theft Auto. And by "it", I mean rank the games from "best" to "bottom of the list".

Why? You might be new to the series. Or diving back into it. These games take a long time to get through, so you should probably start with the good ones first. Or... you might just be arguing with friends. That's the beauty of these things. With a series like Grand Theft Auto, every game has its ups and downs, its pros and cons, and exploring just what ticks people's boxes can be a blast.

Before we dive in, a few notes: these aren't Kotaku's picks for the pecking order of the GTA series. They're just mine. You'll no doubt find my colleagues chiming in below with their two cents! Also note that, like with Halo, I've had to set some boundaries on what I'm including and what I'm not.

It was a lot tougher to draw a line in the GTA series, since it spans so many platforms (and even decades), but at the risk of offending purists I've decided to stick to just the standalone titles. That means no "Stories" or "Episodes" titles, as by sharing a map they're sharing half the experience (making them more of an expansion, in my opinion, even with their own stories), but I'll consider them as part of the main games they're based on.

1. Vice City

It may not be the perfect Grand Theft Auto game, but it's the perfect Grand Theft Auto experience. Sure, on a superficial level it's the car chases and gunplay that make a GTA game fun, but it's the strength of the world that helps set these games apart from each other. And no world was better realised than Rockstar's take on 1986 Miami. The first time you drive past pink neon lights while Jan Hammer plays on the radio, you'll feel, just for a moment, that you're quite literally back in the 1980s. It's a little bit terrifying.

It also helps the game boasts perhaps the series' strongest assortment of characters, led by Ray Liotta's Tommy Vercetti, who is nevertheless outshone by William Fichtner's coke-addled lawyer turn.

2. Grand Theft Auto IV

Drab as it may be, Rockstar's most recent entry in the series built a world so rich they could put three stories in it and still make parts of the map feel brand new. While dialling back the chaos of San Andreas upset some, for me it was a welcome move, the added "realism" of 2008's Liberty City creating a virtual metropolis that lives and breathes like no other in all of video games.

3. Grand Theft Auto III

The most revolutionary entry in the series, as it's the one that brought the franchise into the 3D world, I don't think GTAIII gets enough credit for the strength of its map. While the story and characters aren't so hot, Rockstar clearly finding their feet in that regard, GTAIII's map is I think the best of the entire series, because it's small enough, and each street is unique enough, that it doesn't take long to learn the entire thing off by heart, something that's almost impossible in later games.

4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Why isn't this higher? I thought San Andreas overreached. The RPG stuff they added to the game wasn't enriching, it was annoying. The size of the map wasn't a good thing, it just meant there were plenty of places you'd get stuck without a vehicle. And I don't think the whole early-90s thing was done as well as Rockstar's treatment of the mid-80s in Vice City.

Yet... good Lord, it's a big game. And a crazy one. Rockstar brought that back with GTAIV's Gay Tony (the return of parachutes, etc) because, while world-building can be important, sometimes you just want to fly a jet fighter around then parachute onto the roof of a truck before blowing it up with an RPG.

5. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

It's not as pretty as bigger games, or perhaps even as engaging, but it sure is interesting, both because of its focus on Chinese-American gangsters (something not really covered in previous games) and its novel control schemes, which brought a unique GTA experience to platforms like the DS and mobile phone which previously (and still have to) suffer poorly-implemented ports.

6. GTA London 1969

Why is this the best-ranked "original" GTA game? Because it remains the only GTA game set outside the United States, which by default also makes it one of the most interesting.

7. GTA 2

I was never the biggest fan of the original 2D games, as the viewpoint deprived them of the sense of place and scale that are so important to the 3D games, but GTA 2 at least introduced a number of key features found in later games, like the ability to save your game and to perform different missions for different gangs.

8. Grand Theft Auto

Not a bad game by any means—it spawned this series, after all!—it's just got little to recommend it over any of the games listed above unless you're writing a paper on the history of the franchise.

9. Grand Theft Auto (Game Boy Advance)

The less we say about this, the better.

These Screens from Grand Theft Auto Vice City: 10th Anniversary Edition Look Damn Good There's some debate as to whether the 1980s-set, neon-flecked entry in Rockstar's crime series is the best one. But it's hard to debate that the visuals for the upcoming mobile release look very impressive.

Russian Criminals Use Grand Theft Auto Fan Art In Ads For Bank RobberiesA seedy underground of Russian criminals has gotten so brazen it's taken to posting advertisements offering the services of its expert "bank robbers".

These crims, who mostly employ "cyberheists and tax fraud" to lift money from US banks, even go into detail about the kind of things they can offer prospective employers, as listed on the site of security expert Brian Krebs:

We provide convenient service to our partners:

Unique administrative interface – fast response
We will react momentarily to any new task
Adapt every action of a money mule to client's requirements
Timely payments via WebMoney/Liberty Reserve/Western Union, cash conversion with WU/MG
Cashout of tax return, D + P (dump & PIN, cashout of debit cards stolen via skimming)
Receive over mail or expensive merchandise pick up in a store
Mules are available for other interesting transactions
We work only by reference.

Amazing. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the background and field these guys are "working" in (and I guess the fact Eastern European crooks gotta stick together?), what do they use as the enormous illustration on the ad? Some Grand Theft Auto IV fan art, of course, by none other than internet-famous Rockstar fan artist Patrick Brown.

But What Did Internet Morons Think Of Vice City's New Trailer?Taking inspiration from a treatment on the latest GTAV trailer, reader Adriaan has wonderfully gone through YouTube comments on the latest Vice City iOS clip, presenting them in isolation for our enjoyment.

Some are touching. Some even contain a sliver of truth. Most, though, are hilariously bonkers, just like you hope/expect YouTube comments to be.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

The neon-soaked streets of Vice City have never looked as good as they do in next week's 10th Anniversary Edition for iOS and Android. The fingers are still fused together, but the bodies attached to them are better than ever.

When I first watched this trailer I was a little shocked. This is not how I remembered Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The Vice City I played on the PlayStation 2 was perfect. The characters were shockingly life-like; the animations smooth and silky.

Then I checked out the original trailer.

Wow. It's amazing how fond memories color one's recollections, isn't it? I take this as proof that graphics don't matter as long as you're having a good time.

And we'll be having a damn good time when the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition hits iTunes and Google Play on December 6.

At Least 77,000 People Want To See GTA V Release On The PCYou know it's more than that, but at the time of this writing there are 77, 361 official signatures proclaiming each person's desire to see Rockstar's next Grand Theft Auto title release on PC.

And why shouldn't it? After all, as the petition to Rockstar to get GTA V on PC offers, the PC modding community is part of what made previous titles thrive and evolve even years after their respective releases. Because of some crazy modders, we got to see insanely cool creations in the heart of some GTA games. It would be a crime to deprive GTA V of that same opportunity.

It's not completely out of the question that we will see GTA V on PC. Rockstar's Dan Houser was last quoted indicating that a PC version is potentially "up for consideration," so hang tight for future (likely positive, is my guess) news.

One Of The Best Parts Of Grand Theft Auto Is Now In App FormI think this is something anyone who has played any Grand Theft Auto game can relate to: driving around, just for the hell of it, flicking through radio stations, laughing at Lazlow's shenanigans, listening to the well chosen songs from the game's soundtrack. This new Android thingy, allows you to do this in real life by cramming all the soundtracks from all the games into one app.

This is genius and I can't understand why it hasn't been done up until this point (probably licensing)! The app contains almost every radio station from GTA III, GTA Vice City, GTA Liberty City Stories, GTA Vice City Stories, GTA San Andreas and GTA IV. A few radio stations are missing, but apparently the team behind the app is working on that for future updates.

"Hot Coffee" Scandal was an Attack on Video Games, says Grand Theft Auto MakerThe "Hot Coffee" scandal—a sex minigame found by a modder inside the code of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas—still weighs on Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, which makes the series. In an interview with The Guardian, Houser said he views the seven-year-old incident as an attack on video gaming in general.

"We never felt that we were being attacked for the content, we were being attacked for the medium, which felt a little unfair," Houser said. "If all of this stuff had been put into a book or a movie, people wouldn't have blinked an eye."

The Guardian goes so far as to suggest "Hot Coffee" has shaped how Rockstar deals with the press today although Houser said he and brother Sam's reluctance to do many interviews comes from a Rockstar culture in place well before Hot Coffee.

I think Houser's right but it's also important to remember this took place in 2005, an eon ago in the relationship of video gaming to the mainstream press and culture. Since then, adversaries like Jack Thompson have vanished, screwups like Fox News had in covering Mass Effect, and Call of Duty making everyone comfortable with casual violence thanks to ads like these, have toned down the mainstream's knee-jerk reaction to video games. Thoughtful releases from Rockstar like L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption have also set an expectation that an M-rated game is no less meritorious a work than an R-rated film is.

Grand Theft Auto's name alone may still incite some stupid reactions but I'd be surprised if its next game is treated like anything other than a mainstream work of entertainment, with all the privileges given to it.

The Best Grand Theft Auto Comes to iOS and Android December 6With the mobile version of Grand Theft Auto III still tearing up the Android and iOS charts, Rockstar readies a second helping of mobile free-roaming mayhem with the December 6 release of the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition.

More than any other installment in the series, this is my Grand Theft Auto. I fell in love with Vice City the first time I heard Toto's "Africa" on in-game radio station Emotion 98.3. It spoke to me intimately, in a way latter entries in the series haven't.

The mobile version of the game is enhanced with updated character models, enhanced lighting effects, more precise shooting options and full support for retina devices.

The Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition hits Google Play and iTunes on December 6 for the ridiculously low price of $4.99. To avoid disappointment, make sure you have one of the devices listed below before then.

You Might Get Grand Theft Auto V On PC (And Wii U)Grand Theft Auto IV was released on PC, but when Grand Theft Auto V was announced, a personal computer version was nowhere to be seen.

It's still nowhere to be seen, but Rockstar is at least talking about it, Dan Houser telling IGN that "Everything else is up for consideration. That's all I can give you."

"The main thing is we are not... we are a third-party publisher", Houser added, speaking about both a possible PC and Wii U version. "We're not Nintendo, we're not Sony, we're not Microsoft. We love all of them in different ways. But we can do what we want wherever there's the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market. If that's on Apple we put something on Apple. Wherever it might be. I think that's the fun in what we do. We see ourselves as a content company that uses technology. We don't make it; we use it to make the most fun stuff."

While a PC version seems likely, don't count out a Wii U edition either; GTA games have graced Nintendo handhelds in the past, and that Wii U gamepad must be interesting to somebody at Rockstar.
