Sea of Thieves is 50% off on Steam from April 8 to 12, and players who purchase the Sea of Thieves: Animal Arsenal Edition will receive a pack of goodies to help them get started on their pirate adventure. This time-limited Animal Arsenal Pack includes the Reaper’s Heart Weapon Bundle for all those passionate privateers out there, an excitable Coral Inu pet to be the ship’s first mate and certified good boy (or girl), and a dashing Inu Kraken Outfit to dress them up in.
This weekend marks three years since Sea of Thieves made its maiden voyage, and what a journey it’s been! Since our launch back in March 2018, over 20 million pirates have begun to chart their own tales of high seas adventure, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Yet to get your hooks on the Fightin' Frogs Ship Set? Time's running out to claim it for free: there's still time to snag this heroic livery by completing Act I of Dlala Studios' Battletoads before March 26th, but after this date the only way to adorn your ship with the amphibious trio will be by splashing your Ancient Coins in the Pirate Emporium!
The team have identified the issue causing game crashes and a fix has now been rolled out to Steam, with other platforms to follow. You will need to download a small update, but once this has been installed the game should work as normal. Thank you for your patience.
As we enter a brand-new year, Sea of Thieves enters a brand-new era with the arrival of Seasons! New Voyages, Events, rewards and ways to play are all packed into Season One, available as a free download today for all players on Steam.
As with all of our previous content updates, Season One – including all 100 levels of rewards – comes free of charge to all players, with the brand-new Plunder Pass available for additional purchase to gain early access to premium rewards. You can read more about the introduction of Seasons and the Plunder Pass in more detail below, but we’re delighted that all pirates will be able to play everything a Season brings regardless of whether or not they pick up the Pass!
Season One Showcase
Seasons in Sea of Thieves are, designed to run for around three months at a time, and bring a brand-new layer of progression to the game. Making your way up through each of the 100 levels in Season One will unlock a reward each time, from gold and Doubloons to cosmetics and even Ancient Coins to spend on goods in the Pirate Emporium!
Ascend through the levels by increasing your Renown, which can be done naturally by sailing the seas and doing all the things you’d normally do. Renown is designed to ensure you won’t walk away from a session empty-handed, as you’re constantly being rewarded for play rather than being dependent on cashing in loot. You can also raise your Renown in leaps and bounds by completing Trials: themed sets of Deeds that cover almost every available activity in Sea of Thieves, from visiting every island in a region of the world to vanquishing Ashen Lords and sea monsters. So whether you prefer to casually earn Renown naturally throughout your adventures or seek it out through Trials, progression in Seasons adapts to fit your playstyle.
Season One also launches with Lost Shipment Voyages, a new way to engage with the Merchant Alliance. These Voyages turn you into a seabound detective, seeking clues to precious deliveries that went down with the ship out there somewhere along the trade routes. Retrieve the Cargo Manifests to earn Merchant Alliance rewards and reputation, but find the key to the Captain’s cabin and you can also recover treasures from these written-off wrecks! If you enjoy these new undersea undertakings, don’t worry: Lost Shipment Voyages are set to remain in the game as a permanent feature.
With all this plus Season One’s first time-limited Event – taking down undead marauders for their Soul Fragments, securing the Order of Souls weapon set in the process – and more Twitch Drops treasures on tap from Sea of Thieves Partnered streamers, our latest content update delivers an enormous number of new gameplay opportunities that players can pick and choose from as they see fit.
Pirate Emporium Plunder
Meanwhile, one of the Emporium’s headline items to accompany the launch of Seasons is the Plunder Pass. With a single purchase, the pool of rewards available to earn through Seasonal progression gets a significant boost! Picking up the Plunder Pass adds 11 premium Pirate Emporium items to the rewards obtainable during Season One, including many that are previously unreleased – such as the Dark Warsmith Blunderbuss, Eye of Reach, Pistol and Cutlass, along with the proud Silver Skull Sails. If you’re planning on doing all you can to raise your Renown, the Plunder Pass is a seriously promising proposition!
Elsewhere in the Emporium, a new year is marked with exotic Lunar Festival gear including a ship livery and weapon bundle, plus an all-in-one pirate costume and matching pet outfits that will render you almost too elegant to assault. Flamboyant new emotes let you flaunt your weapon skills or just your unshakeable confidence, while the eerie Order of Souls Possessed Pets will appeal to cat connoisseurs and monkey devotees with a darker streak...

Millions of treasures taken. Scores of skeletons smashed. More bunches of bananas cronched than we can possibly count – it’s been a wild ride across the waves in the 1000 days since Sea of Thieves hit shelves and storefronts for players around the world to enjoy! Here’s a small selection of the many and varied ways in which pirates have spent their time upon the seas:
Naturally, we weren’t about to let such a marauder’s milestone pass without using it as an excuse for a good time and a few giveaways. Let’s begin with the game itself: as Sea of Thieves’ 1000th day falls on December 14th 2020, any players who log in and play between December 13th and December 16th (10:00 UTC) will receive a commemorative 1000 Days Eyepatch emblazoned with a red Roman numeral ‘M’. (Who says pirates have no appreciation for history?) And players who’ve been with us from the beginning will receive a very distinguished golden ‘M’ edition eyepatch, to thank them for being loyal looters since the start.
The red eyepatch will be delivered to players within 72 hours of logging in, while the golden version will arrive next week after the window has closed and eligible pirates have been identified!
And that’s not all we have to announce… you asked, we listened, and the Sea of Thieves: Athena’s Fortune novel is getting its very own audio book treatment! Read by accomplished actor Toby Stephens (Black Sails, Lost in Space) and making full use of music and effects taken from the game, Athena’s Fortune chronicles the intertwined origins of the infamous Pirate Lord and Bilge Rat leader Larinna, who’s recently become well-known to players by taking up her in-game post outside the tavern.
We know a lot of fans old and new have been requesting a spoken rendition of this Tallest of Tales, so it’s a great pleasure for us to announce the enhanced, unabridged Athena’s Fortune adaptation on our 1000-day milestone. It’ll be available to stream and download early next year, free of charge on selected services. Until then, you can feast your eyes upon a sample of the audio book’s snazzy cover artwork, created by artist Iolanda Zanfardino, at the top of this post.
Speaking of Athena’s Fortune, that legendary Galleon’s golden nameplate is one of many new treasures now available to pre-order from the Rare Store – an ideal way to transform any home into your very own Tavern of Legends and stay safe and warm during the winter months!
We’ve also added a trove of new games and puzzles to keep you entertained, including official Sea of Thieves Top Trumps, an ocean battle jigsaw and the very exciting Sea of Thieves X Monopoly Limited Edition, which sees the classic game lovingly wrapped up in familiar Sea of Thieves locations and adventures.
Last but certainly not least, should you fancy refreshing your recollections of the game to date (or if you’re a newer player who’d like a crash course on all that’s gone before), look no further. We’ve prepared a trip down memory lane with a 1000 Days video celebrating the adventures added to keep the pirate life exciting over the weeks, months and years since launch!
It’s been an unforgettable time watching the game expand and evolve since its 2018 debut. On behalf of the whole team we’d like to say thanks to everyone who’s sailed together with us for either part or all of the journey, living their pirate life as a seasoned adventurer, party pirate or battle-scarred Reaper, and we can’t wait to share more about what’s ahead in the new year. The best, as they say, is yet to come.
Until then, don’t forget to examine your very own Story So Far to see how you contributed to Sea of Thieves’ numbers in 2020! We hope you all enjoy a merry Festival of Giving as you continue your pirate odyssey (remembering to collect your 1000 Days Eyepatch along the way, of course) and, until next year, we’ll see you on the seas!

Another year is almost over, both here and on the shores of the Sea of Thieves, where the Festival of Giving is about to get underway! Everyone’s invited to join the festivities in the latest free Sea of Thieves update, available today on Steam.
Brand new Events and fan-favorite Voyages mingle with incentives such as login gifts and Twitch Drops as the festive season sweeps across the seas, from The Shores of Plenty to The Devil’s Roar. And before getting started, you can grab some stats on your piratical performance in 2020 by checking out Your Story So Far!
Holiday Happenings
During the inevitable end-of-year visits to the tavern, Sea of Thieves’ pirates will find Larinna offering two more Voyage options, both returning favorites. Reserved for special occasions, Gilded Voyages come with the promise of seriously boosted bounty, while the explosive Black Powder Stashes have widened their scope to include more recent toys like the Chest of Rage and Ashen Winds Skull.
Meanwhile, in true Festival of Giving spirit, a line-up of time-limited Events will let pirates rake in the riches and a range of cosmetic prizes. In the 12 Deeds of Giving Event running through to January 20, beating Challenges based on a familiar festive song (with a Sea of Thieves twist) grants goodies with a new and effortlessly elegant Eastern Winds Jade theme.
Alongside this, pirates are encouraged to give generosity a go in Plundered Presents, which brings bonus payouts and Gold Hoarder goods in return for gifting treasure to other crews. On December 30 this makes way for Grogmanay, a fiery line-up of half a dozen new Challenges with their own rewards to send pirates roaring into the new year!
Cold Store
Players expecting the Pirate Emporium to be full of wintry wonders this December will be in their element. The latest livery is the Frozen Horizon Ship Collection, with matching weapons also available to buy – so if you claim the Twitch Drops clothing rewards throughout the month and the free Frozen Horizon Tankard just for logging in and playing, you’ll have all the glacial gear you could need!
Glacial also applies to the Curse now afflicting the Inu and Ragamuffin pets in the Emporium, but they don’t seem too bothered by the drop in body temperature and are perfectly cool with being pirate sidekicks. There are Festival of Giving outfits for pets of all shapes and sizes – a seasonal collection that also includes weapons and emotes – while the Bonechiller Costume offers a much darker twist with the chance to cosplay as a creepy, crimson-clothed Skeleton Lord. And as the end of the year approaches, you can light up the seas with fireworks courtesy of the brand new Cannon Flare options!

From November 26 to December 1, players can purchase Sea of Thieves on Steam at a 25% discount, and will also receive a number of glorious gifts along with the game. This time-limited bundle includes a set of feast-themed musical instruments based around the game’s Festival of Plenty and a golden Reaper’s Heart weapon set to show your affection, pirate-style!
A Cloudy Capuchin pet is also invited to the party as part of the bundle, along with a suitable Capuchin Outfit of Plenty to wear. Additionally, you’ll receive 550 Ancient Coins to spend in the Pirate Emporium, a place where premium outfits and weapons, pet costumes and much more are available to purchase. Plenty of reasons to celebrate with family and friends on the Sea of Thieves!
As we approach the end of a strange year, we as a team are proud of the amount of free content rolled out to all Sea of Thieves players in 2020 despite all the changes and challenges of remote working. To continue to deliver on this throughout the year has been testament to the team spirit and culture we have here, and the way everyone on the team has supported each other throughout it all has made me even more proud to be a part of Team Rare.
We’ve been busy with more than the regular updates you’ve already experienced: we’re hard at work behind the scenes on some significant changes that will lead us into 2021, with plans in motion for how we continue supporting the game and some major news still to come. Sea of Thieves isn’t slowing down any time soon.
However, it does mean that we’ve had to slightly rethink our end-of-year updates to lay some groundwork and allow us to focus on things beyond the immediate future. So November’s update is more of a quality of life update, largely focused on bug fixes and improving the core Sea of Thieves experience for all players. However, we’ve made sure there’s still plenty to do in terms of events and in-game activities, extending some events and building on the success of others, while the Pirate Emporium team have also restocked the shelves with more of the endlessly creative things they’ve been working on.
The progression of weekly Challenges and Voyages throughout the Fate of the Damned update led to a point where all Challenges and Voyages were unlocked and available, so those will stay in the game until December 9th for players to embark upon and earn rewards including Soulflame weapons and gear. Talk to Larinna at the tavern or visit the Fate of the DamnedEvent page for details on what you can get and how to get it!
If you enjoyed September’s Vault of the Ancients update, you’ll be pleased to know we’ve continued to add to that, and The Devil’s Roar region has now joined the list of possible Treasure Vault locations. So one of those Voyages picked up from the Gold Hoarders could now be made even more epic by superheated seas and fire from the sky! And if you tackle a Treasure Vault Voyage over Thanksgiving, you could get rich quick as that’s when we’ll be running the next Gold & Glory Weekend, with double gold and reputation on offer for all treasure handed in.
November’s Emporium update puts the Fightin’ Frogs Ship Set up for anyone to buy, if they haven’t already earned it by playing through Act I of the new Battletoads. Joining it are our latest unique pets, The Hunter’s Call Forager Parrot and Monkey – but we couldn’t overlook the other pets, so there are also Bone Crusher Outfits available for all species including cats and dogs. The popular Festival of Plenty pet outfits and musical instruments make a return to mark this time of year. Meanwhile, players always looking for new ways to express themselves should enjoy the all-in-one Varied Weapon Pose Emote, along with new Barrel Emotes and the Fightin’ Frogs Flex Emote that we’re making available as a freebie for everyone.
So even with a lighter update than usual, there’s still plenty to get your teeth into! Full release notes will accompany the update as usual on Wednesday November 18th, so you can see everything that’s new and all the latest performance and quality of life fixes, while the Pirate Emporium and Events Hub pages will be brought right up to date.
We hope you enjoy it, and also hope you’re looking forward to the end-of-year celebrations and Sea of Thieves’ next stage of adventure that lies beyond. We’ve got a special edition of SoT News coming in the next few weeks that will talk about the December update, and we’ll also be talking about our plans heading into the new year. We have some significant and exciting changes coming as we move into what’s likely to be Sea of Thieves’ biggest year yet, and we’re excited to share our thoughts with you all soon!
As the nights draw in and pumpkins pop up in unexpected places, it’s time for Sea of Thieves to celebrate the scariest of seasons with its latest free update, available today to all Sea of Thieves players on Steam.
This year, pirates will be dealing with a sudden influx of dangerous enemies known as Shadows of Fate – a tricky type of skeleton normally confined to the Fort of the Damned. Working together with the Bilge Rats, players will uncover the story behind this emerging threat as it unfolds week by week, carrying crews into different regions of the seas.
Voyages of the Damned
Nowhere is completely safe during the Fate of the Damned update, as an advancing threat spreads across the seas. Pirates will receive Mysterious Notes before they set out on their adventures, urging them to speak with Larinna outside the tavern to find out what she’s learned, as well as which regions are being menaced by the Shadows of Fate that week – and those places are likely to be a hive of piratical activity, encouraging crews to plan their adventures accordingly.
Larinna will also be offering free Voyages that send players in search of her missing Bilge Rat crews, a task that guarantees some spectral scuffles along the way. Luckily, these same Voyages will give players the knowledge and tools to find the light that can banish the Shadows of Fate. The Ferryman aboard the Ferry of the Damned will also offer advice on how pirates might best defend themselves.
Slay Hordes for Rewards
Players who choose to help turn the tide against this invading enemy, or who gather Flames of Fate to celebrate the Sea of Thieves’ traditional Festival of the Damned at this time of year, will find their efforts rewarded in the Fate of the Damned Event that forms part of this update. New Challenges will be unveiled as the Event progresses, each containing a number of varied Goals for pirates to tackle.
As more Goals are completed, new rewards will be made available, including the striking Soulflame weapons and lantern. Pirate Legends who go the extra mile and complete all Challenges will find they have access to the envy-inducing Soulflame Crew Set, available to them and anyone who’s currently sailing aboard their ship!
The Dead Pets Society
Last year’s spooky Fort of the Damned update saw a Skeleton Parrot and Monkey find their way into the Pirate Emporium – and not to be outdone, a Skeleton Cat and Dog have just arrived in search of loving owners who don’t mind their pets being a bit on the skinny side. They’re just as loyal as their flesh-and-blood friends, and guaranteed not to leave hair all over the furniture.
Elsewhere in the Emporium, the Soulflame Ship Set is ready to light up the seas with an eerie glow that captures the ethereal essence of the Well of Fates. If you prefer to travel by firelight, you can also acquire the free, irreverent Lantern Dance Emote that helps lighten even the gloomiest moments. Speaking of emotes, there’s a new set that allows your pirate to play the fool courtesy of a skeleton arm that’s a lot less dead than it should be, plus fear-inducing facepaints and plenty more.
