Welcome to the second issue of the RISK community bulletin. Last month we saw the massive 3.1 update go live with new dice, frames, emotes, and most importantly the new shop! Here are a few of the new shop favourites according to you;
Since the new update, the most sought-after Dice (so far) has been the Red Digital Clock Dice!
The most frequently spammed emote is the Mika Raspberry!
Amongst the 10 new frames, Montu’s frame has come out on top!
We hope you’re enjoying the 3.1 update so far! How many of you have managed to conquer Troy yet? Since the update, we have pushed a couple of hotfixes to fix any issues that came with the update. Such as;
Shop not working on iOS
Lost Cities Maps don’t show map pack name
Blank chat during emote animation
Daily deals repeating and not refreshing
Various UI things
That’s 3.1 out of the way, let’s talk 3.2. We can’t get into the fun things like Dice and Frames just yet. HOWEVER what we can tell you is that the next update in addition to new features, we’ll be focusing on existing bugs that got put on the backburner whilst we worked on the shop.
In next month's community issue we’ll be back with a teaser of the new shiny things.
We collaborated with Tribe Gaming to present their and our community with the free limited edition Tribe Dice that was available June 2-9, were you lucky enough to grab yours?
Check out their video and slick costumes below Let the #TRIBEWIN roll! 🎲
General Realed uploaded their first ever RISK video. We love to see it, go give your support, watch the video, and hit subscribe (that’s what YouTubers say right?). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd0nATQSE70
Do you think you’ve got what it takes to compete against our very best? Our discord community runs quarterly tournaments with prizes. We also have dedicated channels in our discord designed for players looking for a game. Bite the bullet and join our dedicated RISK server https://discord.gg/risk
Thus ends the transmission of our second community bulletin. What would you like to hear in the next one? Let us know in the comments below! Over and out, Team RISK at SMG Studio
To celebrate this update we also want to share this amazing artwork of Atlantis we commissioned from Dean Ilango to celebrate the Lost Cities map pack. Check out his work, give him a follow.
In the biggest change since launch we’ve released a new shop, cosmetics and currency system. It will allow us new ways to reward players but also give you many more options to customize your profile. We can also now be more flexible with the pricing of items as no longer tied to the store prices and the strict sale requirements. For Steam users this means more regular sales on everything in the store.

RISK GEMS
A new currency system means we can not only offer better sales and more flexibility on store discounts, but we can also make the game more rewarding. We’re starting with daily gem giveaways in v3.1+, but plan to create more play-based rewards in future updates.
PLAYER COLOURS
You spoke, we listened. We’ re reverting back to the classic RISK colours with the exception of the Amazon Prime exclusive purple.
Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, Orange have all revert back to the original ‘Classic’ colours
Purple will become available after June.
Bubblegum Pink added in v2.8 will be retained
Charcoal (Black) and Porcelain (White) added in v2.8 will be kept as the exclusive Premium colours
All other new colours have been removed. To update your colours, please go to your profile customisation screen. And big thanks to everyone in the RISK community for your feedback.
AVATARS + UI
There was overwhelming demand to bring back the old way of tinting avatars based on player color (versus persistent colors). We’ve added that to v3.1 along with other improvements to the chat UI to make player colors more legible:
Avatars now cropped inside the frame in the chat UI
Death State more clear.
Tweaks to icons to make larger & legible.
More prominent colour panel around avatar frames.

Phew! What an update! This a significant change which allows us more flexibility and scope to enhance the game.
Let us know in the comments what you think of this update and if you have any dice ideas post away. We’re in production on a lot of new ones now.
Future Updates Rough Plan:
3.2 update will be focussed on optimization and fixes as well as smoothing out the tutorial. 3.3+ will be new features (some requested a lot)
This is the new RISK community bulletin, your regular rundown on everything RISK, our community and glimpses on what goes on behind the scenes.

Presenting our first Dev Journal, a series of mini developer updates going over the biggest changes coming to RISK. This time around, we’ll share a teaser of a select few (not all!) of the dice, emotes, and avatar frames coming soon in our to be released 3.1 build.
Upcoming Dice
Have a few Dice sneak peaks, as a treat. Only a few, we don’t want to spoil the sheer amount we’re releasing in v3.1
Upcoming Emotes Want to spam more emotes? Don’t worry, we got you covered!
Upcoming avatar frames In v3.0 we had pretty limited frame choices but that is no longer! Say hello to just SOME of the avatar frames we’ll have available in v3.1
Colour Changes You spoke, we listened, we are reverting back to the classic RISK colours with the exception of the Amazon Prime exclusive purple.
Congratulations to The Kill Pete Strategy for the win on his round 3 of the Q2 RISK Discord tournament. You can check it out in the video below.
Check out Risk4Ever’s latest video “Beat One Border North American Strategy”, playing against 2 grandmaster ranked players.

Thus ends the transmission of this community bulletin. What did you think? What would you like to hear in the next one? Let us know in the comments below!
Get that scroll wheel on your mouse ready because the 3.0 update is a big one. It’s got something for everyone young and old. The only thing it doesn't have is the GitHub link to the Dice code for the RNG haters. That’s coming really soon, we’re just focused on this release.
New Customization
We’ve beefed* up the customization options to now include dice, troops and avatar frames. This means when you go into battle, YOU choose which troop, dice and frame to flex. It’s no longer decided by the (Pirate, Fantasy, Classic or Zombie) map theme.
Players that purchased the Pirate Pack, Fantasy Pack (not Fantasy 2 Map Pack sorry) or Zombie Pack, will find the matching themed avatars, troop pieces and dice unlocked and available to use in v3.0+
This is just the start with more to come in future updates. Let us know what you think of the new dice in the comments below.
*Note: Game is still Vegan.
Other players can check out your customization inside your player profile, viewable from the multiplayer lobby, leader-boards, friends list and even during gameplay (tap the avatars inside the chat ui).
Ever wanted to be a Bubble Gum Pirate General? Well now you can!
New Dice
We’ve completely rebuilt the dice- all new models, textures, and spit-polished those shaders. For v3.0 launch we’ll have the default ‘classic’ dice and themed dice, plus some reward dice for our elder players (dropping a bit later).
FYI we’ve got LOTS more in production (pssst for those that didn’t see our Cat-Butt™ or Pineapple Pizza tweets).
Cat Butt dice concept v3 [NSFW]
Cat B*tt dice concept v3.1 [SFW version]
Speaking of cheeks, here’s a cheeky peak at some dice debuting in v3.0.
Pirate dice aka The Jolly Roger. Carved from original pirate peg-leg. Floats well, allowing easy retrieval if thrown overboard in anger.
This is the fantasy dice known as Vault Key. Legend has it that these dice unlock a vault filled with rare jewels guarded by a dragon. We're just not sure where the vault is.
Zombie dice #1 aka Z. Watch out this one is bitey!
Zombie dice #2 aka Frankie. Make sure to wash your hands after rolling these dice.
More rewards!
We’re excited to be able to offer more rewards for players with all of these new cosmetic additions to the game. From v3.0, players that have been with us for a year or longer will receive an exclusive dice to celebrate their RISK-aversary.
For the OG players (think pre-2019 back when candy used to taste different) you’ll also be getting another exclusive dice later this month. We’ll announce the drop date soon.
Wait, there’s more! Later this month we’ll be releasing a limited-time exclusive map free to all players. Follow the game on Steam to get alerted when this drops.
More For Premium!
Behold the Castle dice, exclusive to our Premium players. This cosy castle has 4 bedrooms, a dining hall and board game room.
As a big thank you to our Premium players we’ll be stuffing even more value into your Premium purchase. You’ll get the new RISK Castle dice above plus 8 NEW Premium player colours. (Note: We've noticed some issues with the new colors and we'll fixed those soon to make them contrast better) We had fun naming these colors and arguing over what to name the color pink.
(FYI: the producer forgot to give me the PSD to edit the ‘zinger’ which is internal talk for when I go in and add jokes after every section. So please comment below with what the General should say and the best “zingers” get a prize.)
Gratuitous action shot
New Avatar Frames
In v3.0 players will have the ability to choose their avatar frames. Admittedly it’s pretty limited with two choices but we have LOTS more in the works.
Above is a sneak peak at the Prime Gaming avatar frame exclusive to our Prime members. More info here: https://amazon.com/risk
And here’s an even sneakier peek at more concepts still in development.
Updated Avatars
All the current avatars have been lovingly repainted by hand in our basement workshop. In v3.0+ they’ll no longer be tinted based on player colour, but will have permanent colours (shown above).
Handy Tip: During gameplay, player colours will now be represented by the coloured avatar frame and background.
New Feature: Blitz Attack Limit
Blitz is great for speeding up dice roll attacks, but sometimes you just don’t want to go all in. Until now there was no way to set troop limits in Blitz attack. After a lot* of player requests we squirreled away some developer hours and built the Blitz Attack Limiter™, now available in v3.0.
*Or as they say in Australia, “heaps!”
Handy tip: The striped section represents the minimum of troops to attack with (1 troop), so the slider will not go below this.
RISK Season 2
From March 1st a new season of RISK battles begins (Season 1 lasted 5 years but we don't expect Season 2 to last that long), and our global leaderboards will be reset. Your rank points will not be changed, but you'll temporarily see '0' for your profile rank (this is your position on the Global Seasonal leaderboard). Just complete one ranked Global Domination game in this new season to see your updated profile rank. You'll be placed back on the leaderboard as soon as that game is finished by all players.
This is the first step towards some major rank and season improvements that we've planned for this year.

More to Come
Don’t forget the officially community run Discord is also the place to chat with all the other RISK fans like you, well maybe not exactly like you as you’re special.
Phew! What an update! There’s still more to come in 3.1 which is due April but we wanted to get this update out to test the new cosmetics and get those larger bugs fixed.
Let us know in the comments what you think of this update and if you have any dice ideas post away. We’re in production on many new ones now.
P.S We like to inject some humor into these updates and where possible into the game. If you're not a fan of jokes we understand, but let us have this OK. Be excellent to each other!
While we're hard at work on the next big update (ETA is Early March right now) we've unlocked the next loot drop for Prime members. Thanks Prime Gaming! For supporting RISK and giving us something to reward players with.
This time it's for 4 animated emotes.
How to claim?
All the info is here: https://amazon.com/risk Note: due to SDKs and the complexity in them we have to unlock the rewards through mobile. Your RISK account can be linked so anything you unlock on mobile = on Steam. So it's an extra few steps but it's the safest way to do this without breaking the Steam version right now. Thanks for patience.
Emotes have been animated by the very talented and easy to work with https://twitter.com/TopSpinTheFuzzy If you ever need emotes animated we highly recommend them.
We'll have an update soon as to what to expect in the next big update but as a special preview you can see below we'll be unlocked more colors for Premium players! Some straight out of the box and the others unlocked through play for Premium users.
Extra colors might seem like a simple thing but with all development we only planned for the set colors so we needed to redo how we colorize all the assets across the game. Which isnt a simple task.
We're not going to charge players specifically for colors (some games do this) Why? Because you may join a game that was started by someone who already has the color you want and BOO! we dont want anyone to pay for something and not be able to use it. We also think it's a better incentive for players to go premium and we can reward players for sticking around, winning matches and generally being awesome.
Welcome to 2021. What better way to start the year than... free stuff!!
From now until Jan 21 you can claim two free maps with the Amazon Prime Gaming Map Pack #2
Right now it's only redeemable via your mobile (IOS & Android) but good news is that if you login via your RISK account you'll be able to redeem on mobile and play on Steam. It's important that BOTH mobile and Steam use the same RISK account.
We even got this pretty neat vanity URL! All the details are on this page https://amazon.com/risk
The partnership with Amazon is a triple win as we get promotion, you get free stuff and Amazon get people enjoying Prime even more.
And if you have Prime you should definitely check out The Boys. Such an interesting take on the superhero genre and well worth the admission of Prime alone.
So what are the maps I hear you asking... (i dont but play along)
River Town from the Fantasy pack
This is one of my fave maps as I love that bottleneck in the middle. As with a lot of maps we want them to have unique "features" of a unique "feel".
The other is Boston from the US Cities Pack.
While it's such an iconic city from film and TV and I've personally visited it 3 times for PAX East, if you put a gun to my head and said Is Boston north or south of NYC I wouldn't be able to confidently say.
So that's the update for now. We'll have more news soon about the next update but 2021 should be a good year for us all. Super excited to share whats coming up. Plus we'll be putting our dice code up on Github! I cant wait for that as will just make it easier to prove we dont mess with the dice. Or maybe there's a bug and we can all find it together. Either way good stuff is coming.
To celebrate the Festive season* we've added the 4th map to the Zombie Map Pack for no additional price.
Mo maps, No money!
Plus we're on sale during the Winter Sale Please give us your hard earned cash so we can keep adding more maps for free later.
28 Turns Later is set in London** and rounds out the Zombie Map Pack to have 4 maps now. It also has avatars and dice too so great value. This is also the last free map for a while as we've now upgraded all the packs to have at least 4 maps. We might circle back and add advanced or simpler versions of maps to other packs in 2021.
* OK you got us, we made a mistake with the map originally during Halloween, recalled it and now released in time for Xmas.
** If you dont get the 28 Turns Later reference then I suggest you find/rent a copy of 28 Days Later, the fantastic Danny Boyle zombie film. I mean has Danny even made a bad film ever?!!
It does have "fast zombies" so if you're a Z purist you might feel this is not a true zombie film but trust us, the film is amazing. Oh and the soundtrack is pretty decent too. I'm pretty sure this is the film that put Cillian Murphy on the radar of Hollywood too so we have the film to thank for that also.
I hope your scroll-wheel is ready because this is one of the biggest updates to RISK yet and you’re gonna be scrolling for a while.
To celebrate this update we also want to share this amazing artwork we commissioned from Ryan Lee to celebrate the Strongholds & Castles map pack. Check out his work, give him a follow.
We’ve focused on new content and quality of life fixes. We hope you enjoy and wish all our players a safe and fun holiday season.
There’s also a LOT of work done but not released in 2.8 which will be rolled out in updates in early 2021. We’ll also be releasing our dice rolling code to GitHub so everyone can review and we can stop the conspiracies.
Strongholds & Castles
Battle your way through four iconic locations from around the world. Strongholds & Castles map pack features our largest ever map -- Mont Saint-Michel!
This is the type of castle you draw as a kid with the iconic circular towers around the wall. Built in 1289 for £15,000 which seems like a bargain in retrospect considering it’s still standing today and you’d struggle to build a small studio apartment for that.
Honestly if you told me these were up for rent on AirBNB as instagrammer getaway hotels I would believe you. Built for the Second World War long before influencers were a thing.
Fantasy II
It’s Xmas time so we’ve doubled down with another four new maps! Reveal the mysteries of strange and haunted places, explore enchanted lands and ancient ruins in our Fantasy II map pack.
Dracula’s Castle
Oh Drac I love what you’ve done with the place!! It’s actually Bran Castle but that sounds like a breakfast cereal so we’re going with Dracula’s Castle as a much more tourist-friendly name.
Lost Temple:
We even asked master cartographer, Dyson Logos to licence us the design for Lost Temple. Check out his site and support his Patreon. There’s so many amazing maps for your own D&D sessions at home.
Jules Verne's Mysterious Island
Based off the Jules Verne novel by the same name (well it was originally L'Île mystérieuse but I struggle to type those umlauts, are they umlauts? what are those things called?) We thought we’d tap into the classic, but importantly public domain, fantasy.
The Younger Scrolls
Oddly familiar yet totally different map! Enjoy waging battles on this magical land.
Free Stuff!
Love free stuff? Of course you do. We’ve teamed up with prime gaming to offer free in-game loot. Pretty sweet deal. They help promote RISK, you get free stuff. It’s a triple WIN!
To redeem: Just log into RISK: Global Domination on mobile (IOS or Android) with your Prime account to claim free maps, emotes and more! The rewards will roll out over the next 6 months!
Settings & RISK Account
We’ve added categories to Settings for a better user experience AND added new options for account security.
16+ age players can now: add an email as well as password to ensure your purchases and progress are secure and easy to recover with email verification. Log in with your email only (once you’ve set it up) if you forget your username.
As of v2.8 players can still play across devices and platforms under one account, but will no longer be able to play games at the same time on multiple devices. This is to:
curb potential cheating
prevent server errors caused by updates from simultaneous games for one account.
When you log on to a second device while active on another, your session will be disconnected from the first device. If you attempt to return to the second device you will be asked which device to continue to use.
Battle Log
We’ve beefed up the Battle Log. This will help remove some of the !?!? when playing but don't worry the beef is vegan safe.
We know some of the authentic RISK rules can be a bit obscure, so we’re now logging 6 different event types:
Turn Start: details on troop & continent bonuses
Card Trade: now shows forced trades / how many cards / if there was a 2+ territory card bonus / matching card combinations
Attack: who attacked whom / territories and troop numbers
Defeat: who defeated whom / territory cards seized
Fortify: How many troops / from where to where
Disconnects: for local player only (with a warning some events will not be recorded while they were disconnected)
For better clarity, we’ve added the details for the troop bonus calculations now. This helps a lot with the more obscure RISK rules, like the +2 troops when you occupy one of the territories on the cards you trade in.
If you’re playing with Fog of War, you’ll see fewer details of course:
Turn Start: total troop only
Card Trade: total troops only
Player Defeated: full details shown
Fortify: will only show details if both territories are visible to you on the map.
Other improvements:
Ever wanted to review the battle log after your game finished? Now you can both on Game Over or while spectating as an eliminated player.
We increased the max number of events from 30 -> 45. Work that scroll wheel! (this update was brought to you by the Scroll Wheel Union of America. “Scroll Wheels: keeping America scrolling since 1996”)
We reduced the triggers to auto-close the Battle Log to the essentials only: your turn start; a player defeat; Capitals game mode ‘active’ alert; zombie outbreak alert. User testing says 93% less annoying!
New ‘Six Strikes’ Suspension System
The RISK ban hammer got a major update in v2.8.
Previously, player suspensions from ranked multiplayer games could last anywhere between 1-30 days. This has now been replaced by ‘Six-strikes’ where each strike incurs a longer suspension for repeat offenders. Strike 1 is a 24 hr suspension and escalates up to a permanent ban for strike 6. This is also aimed at reducing the number of “burner/alt” accounts and to be less punishing tor players unfamiliar with our fair play rules e.g. don’t play with friends in Global Domination (pssst that’s what Play with Friends mode is for).
Previously we did a poor job of communicating to suspended players how long their suspensions would last. In v2.8 this is clearly shown on the home screen and by tapping the Global Domination button. In addition, players will now receive a direct in-app message from RISK admin at the start of a new suspension.
Fair Play
We listen to our community feedback and requests, and with every release we commit a portion of our development to improving Fair Play. In v2.8 we’ve included many small to medium updates:
Stalling
RISK v2.7 shipped with automated detection for unfair stalling (where an opponent could win but stalls in an attempt to force you to quit rather than finish). In v2.8, the Report Player now has ‘Stalling’ as an additional option. Tap on your opponent’s avatar to access.
Reporting Players
We often receive questions from our community about what happens to complaints submitted during a game using the report feature (above) for cheating, unfair or inappropriate behaviour. Reported players are flagged and actively monitored for 30 days using our automated tools. For players using v2.8+ we will now provide a direct message in-app to inform reporters whether any action is taken against the player they reported.
In addition, as of v2.8 if you have reported a player using the in-game reporting feature (or they have reported you) neither of you will be able to view a game hosted by the other that is in the available games to join list in Global Domination.
Ranks
To counter unfair player targeting due to their rank, we’ve removed ranks from multiplayer lobbies, gameplay and game over. Rank filters for game hosts are still available. Also in v2.8 you can now tap avatars in the multiplayer lobby to view player profiles.
Other Improvements
Thanks to our community feedback, we’ve addressed a few exploitable issues in v2.8:
Fix: Closing and restarting the app during a forced card trade will no longer allow a second trade.
If the AI takes over due to player inactivity, they will no longer be able to see the map to wait for an opportunity to rejoin. The map will be 100% hidden as above.
Spectate mode is disabled during Fog of War games to prevent unfair collaboration. Available games in Global Domination will now be named according to map rather than by the host player, to deter friends playing together.
Rules Change
The progressive card bonus is now unlimited in 2.8. Previously it was capped at 60 troops.
Map Changelog
Major
Ottoman Empire: Removed wrong connection between Far East > Caspian Districts. Added missing connection between Far East > Durrani.
Major Fix: player alliances will automatically be broken if a player goes offline and the computer AI takes over. This is to prevent an exploitable bug where the AI would honour the alliance and never attack for the remainder of the game.
Fix: for incorrect position for local player on the in-app leaderboard.
Fix: Occupying 2 continents next to each other will no longer cause the continent outline highlight to be broken
Fix: When selecting a territory to attack, the enemy troop temporarily appears on different territory and then on the correct one.
Fix: for occasional dice disappearing during manual rolling
Fix: for charging tokens for tutorial scenarios.
Added additional sound and vibration to the ‘Get Ready’ confirmation screen for multiplayer games.
Player verified badges and country flags added to game over and home screens
Streamlined onboarding and login for new and existing players.
Multiple UI improvements and minor fixes.
Phew! I can't believe you scrolled this far!
Again thanks for playing and the support of the team at SMG and we can't wait to show you what we have planned for 2021! We’re wrapping up soon for holidays but will have a support team on to answer questions.
Don’t forget the officially community run Discord is also the place to chat with all the other RISK fans like you, well maybe not exactly like you as you’re special.
