It's been out less than a month on PlayStation 4 and PC, but it looks like Fall Guys is already preparing to make the leap across to phones - although we may have to wait a while for a western version.
As reported by games market analyst Daniel Ahmad, Chinese games company Bilibili has secured the rights to a mobile version of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. At the moment it's only set to release in China, but after going to all the effort of creating a mobile version, it would certainly make sense for the game to eventually be released in the west. It seems no other mobile versions are in the works right at this moment, however, with Mediatonic co-founder Paul Croft telling Gamesindustry.biz that the studio is currently "focusing [its] efforts on PC and PS4", but would like to see Fall Guys released on more platforms in future.
Somewhat ironically, last week Fall Guys had to release a warning about fake adverts for a mobile version of Fall Guys, reminding players that "Fall Guys is only available on PC & PS4" and that the mobile versions were "scams". The release of a Chinese mobile version is sure to make spotting those a little more complicated.
Fall Guys is the feel-good hit of the summer - a fun battle royale as fun to watch as it is to play. And for developer Mediatonic, a stratospheric success, with millions in sales.
But how did it all happen? In a fascinating Twitter thread, Mediatonic creative director Jeff Tanton runs through Fall Guys' journey from idea to release, offering some fantastic insight in the process.
For example, Fall Guys wasn't always called Fall Guys. It was once called Fool's Gauntlet, and at another point called Stumble Chums, which I'm a big fan of.
Indie battle royale Fall Guys has said it will create a crossover skin for the company which donates the most to UK games charity Special Effect.
Developer Mediatonic threw down the gauntlet yesterday evening, and there are already several interested parties.
The competition follows crossover skins for Hotline Miami and Team Fortress 2 already appearing in PS4 and Steam versions of the game, respectively.
Dataminers have been digging into the files for Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout - the new gun-free battle royale taking the world by storm - and discovered two themed crossover skins: one Portal-related, and the other inspired by My Friend Pedro.
As discovered by Fall Guys leaker HyperxFG, the Aperture-themed skins are thought to go live on 3rd September 2020, while the My Friend Pedro one reportedly releases just a few days later on 6th September. The Portal one, however, is only reported for listed for PC players right now.
Naturally, planned events and collaborations can, and do, change, but that's what's rumoured for now.
Chart-topping bean battle royale Fall Guys will get its first update today - and it adds a new level.
Well, developer Mediatonic describes the level as new, though it was previously playable back during the game's beta. Jump Showdown is a "fan favourite", the team said, and will be restored to the game today.
Here it is in action:
Brightly-coloured battle royale Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has shifted 2m copies on Steam since its launch on 4th August.
The game is also currently available on PlayStation 4, where it is part of this month's PlayStation Plus offering. There's no word yet on how many more people are playing there.
But clearly Fall Guys is off to a brilliant start - and far better than expected, as its servers' early teething issues showed. So many people turned up on day one it had to be taken offline for maintenance. There were further issues at the weekend, as yet more players flooded in. Developer Mediatonic has said it is working on a longer-term fix.
Fall Guys' remarkable breakout success continues, with remarkable popularity on Steam as well as Twitch.
Mediatonic's bumbling battle royale launched this week and overnight became the feel-good hit of the summer, with over 1.5 million players in the first 24 hours of release.
On Steam, Fall Guys is currently more popular than big-budget blockbusters such as Grand Theft Auto 5 (which you need to play the eternally popular GTA Online) and, Rainbow Six Siege and Destiny 2, with over 121,000 concurrent players at the time of this article's publication. No doubt that number will swell as the United States wakes up throughout the weekend.
Fall Guys, the colourful battle royale version of It's a Knockout, has "skyrocketed past" the number of players developer Mediatonic expected to turn up on day one.
Looking like a cross between Minions and Fortnite, Fall Guys launched today on Steam and PlayStation 4, where it's available at no extra charge through PlayStation Plus.
Writing on Twitter, the official Fall Guys account recorded more than 120,000 people online at lunchtime today - and an hour later, that the developer would now need to switch off matchmaking for 30 minutes to "beef up servers".
