Imagine: you’re invited to the Met Gala and the theme is ‘Haunted Moon’. You know Rihanna will be a stunning spectacle. You concede you cannot beat Celine Dion’s glimmer or gags. You assume Marilyn Manson will do some gory ‘Le Voyage Dans La Lune’ lark with a model rocket stuck in his oozing eye. It’s a given that Kanye West will flout convention and wear jeans. If you really want to stand out with ‘haunted moon’ couture, mate, you couldn’t do much better than some of the astonishing armour coming when Destiny 2 returns to our haunted moon in the Shadowkeep expansion.
Bungie is delaying the release of Destiny 2: New Light and the game's standalone Shadowkeep expansion from their originally announced date of 17th September to 1st October.
Both games mark the first significant step for Bungie's troubled franchise following the developer's split from long-time publisher Activision in January. New Light will see the core Destiny 2 experience (including Year 1's Curse of Osiris and Warmind expansions) become entirely free-to-play, while the moon-themed Shadowkeep is a completely standalone affair.
Announcing the release delay for both titles in a new post on the Destiny subreddit, Bungie's Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy explained that, "As we get closer and closer to serving up Shadowkeep and New Light, it has become increasingly clear to us that our releases for this Fall would benefit from a bit more time in the oven."
Destiny 2‘s gearing up for a big year. A huge year, really. Maybe the biggest one it’s had to date. But that year of bigness will now start a little later, because Bungie are delaying Destiny 2’s free-to-play relaunch, New Light, and its next expansion, Shadowkeep. Previously due on September 17th, they’re now both lined up for October 1st. Bungie say they wanted a touch more development time and hey, they can give themselves that time now that they’re out from under Activision.
Hey everyone,
As we get closer and closer to serving up Shadowkeep and New Light, it has become increasingly clear to us that our releases for this Fall would benefit from a bit more time in the oven.
Being independent means that the future of Destiny 2 is entirely on our team. It also means that we’re agile enough to choose to do what's best for the game and our players, even if it's the hard choice.
We wanted to let you—our Community—know first that we're changing the date for Shadowkeep and New Light from September 17 to October 1.
This Fall is the first step on a journey for what our team wants Destiny 2 to become - a place for you and your friends to play anytime, anywhere; owning the action MMO and RPG elements that we love about the game; and crushing barriers to entry for friends. We just need a bit of extra time to take the first step.
We didn't make this decision lightly. We know for some of you (us too), Destiny releases are events where you take time off of work or develop a sudden sickness that keeps you from school or work (we get it, a bunch of our team takes some time off to go on their own Destiny Jacket Quest). We're sorry for screwing up your plans and we wanted to share this information as quickly as we could.
Here's some more date housecleaning:
- The World First for the new Raid Garden of Salvation will begin on Saturday, October 5. It’s a weekend Raid race and Contest will be active
- We’re extending Moments of Triumph through September 17 – you’ll have three more weeks to complete this year’s challenges and unlock all of the in-game and Bungie rewards
- We’re going to run an additional Iron Banner the week of September 17 as well
- Cross Save will come online later this Summer, so you’ll have time to sort out your Friend Lists well ahead of Shadowkeep
More to come next week. Thanks for playing and see you soon,
Luke & Mark
Somewhere above the clouds over Europe, powered by spacemagic, a few ruined city blocks and a whole load of rocks are hovering as a new playground for Earth’s greediest heroes. This is the European Aerial Zone, host to a new cooperative mode in Destiny 2‘s Solstice Of Heroes event, which started last night and runs for a month. I adore the EAZ as a playground, leaping from rooftop to rooftop or barrelling through maze-like interiors while hunting bosses and treasure. It is a good place. So it’s baffling that the wider Solstice Of Heroes event offers rewards which strongly incentivise not> playing the mode.
Destiny 2 Solstice of Heroes is the game's summer event before the arrival of the game's third year - and with it, the Shadowkeep expansion.
As well as giving the Tower a makeover, an influx of new cosmetic items to buy from the Eververse store, Elemental Buffs and a new European Aerial Zone event to participate in, you'll also have the opportunity to earn Solstice 2019 armour through a series of challenges.

The Iron Lords will return to host Destiny 2‘s Iron Banner PvP event again next week but no, Bungie won’t have fixed the balance issues and bugs currently plaguing PvP. Chief among these is Lord of Wolves, a shotgun which has dominated on PC for six weeks now with ten-shot bursts of flame able to kill a spaceman at rifle range. It’s everywhere and it sucks. Bungie said they couldn’t rush a fix without crunching, and I respect that, but their lack of vision and attention for the PvP ‘Crucible’ modes is really showing. I’m disappointed to still be waiting for vital fixes for one of my favourite parts of the MMOFPS.
In celebration of the Moon landing's 50th anniversary tomorrow (and Destiny 2: Shadowkeep's release in September), Bungie has provided our best look yet at its upcoming revamped Moon location.
This is the Moon area from Destiny 1 but now twice the size. Its main feature is its titular red Shadowkeep castle, which looks like something out of Mordor.
But here we can also see familiar areas such as the Archer's Line Accelerator and the Hellmouth, which have gained new nooks and crannies to explore. That Fallen ketch added in House of Wolves, too. Expect Destiny 2's Lost Sectors to expand all of these.
Don't call Stadia Pro "Netflix for games", Google has insisted. Instead, it's more like Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus.
In a reddit AMA, Andrey Doronichev, director of product for Stadia at Google responded to a question about the free game situation with the upcoming paid subscription streaming service, "as it is confusing due to mixed messages".
"To be clear, Stadia Pro is not 'Netflix for Games' like some people have mentioned," Doronichev replied.
