To celebrate the release of Timberborn's first demo and the long-awaited Steam Game Festival, we're hosting a few live streams!
  • On Thursday, February 4th, 8 AM GMT – we’ll kick things off with a four-hour-long event. You will be able to watch our game designer Jon tackle the entire demo live! If you have tried the demo already but your beavers are dying left and right, this is a perfect opportunity to ask for a hint! Unless, of course, Jon's colony is also starved and thirsty.
  • On Friday, February 5th, 2 PM GMT, Jon will be joined by our comms guy Michal for the main live stream. We will show you what Timberborn is about – and we won't limit ourselves to the constraints of the demo. We'll take you to the paradise city where the grass is green and all buildings are unlocked, beavers are many, and the map editor works.
  • On Monday, February 8th, 2 PM GMT, we’ll play the demo again, but we'll spice it up with a challenge. We still need to decide what it’s going to be. Can the demo be beaten without growing a single carrot? Is it possible to build a monument that will be more than a tombstone for dead beavers? If you want to see Jon struggle a bit, feel free to give us an idea for a challenge you want to see! Make your suggestions during streams on February 4th and 5th, below, or on our Discord!
Speaking of which – make sure you join our Discord beaver community to discuss the demo – and more!

All three live streams will be available here on Steam but also on our Twitch.

The Friday/Monday streams will also go live on our YouTube channel and Timberborn's fan page on Facebook.

Today’s minor balancing patch makes it easier to blow things up and experiment with terraforming in the demo.

Balance changes:
  • Reduced the science cost of Dynamite from 150 to 20.
  • You now start the game with 15 Explosives in your Small Warehouse.

We have added in-game tips to the demo and fixed a few bugs.

New feature – in-game tips
While it is not a fully-fledged tutorial, we heard your requests for a little assistance in starting the beaver colony. There you go!
  • Added an additional window that displays in-game tips for beginners. This micro-tutorial tracks your progress and updates accordingly.
  • This window may be turned off. You may re-open it via Settings.
Bug fixes
  • Size of the arable (green) areas is no longer affected by the depth of adjacent water bodies.
  • Fixed a few issues with the new audio that caused the game to increase the speed of music or play the tracks in the wrong order.
Other
  • Added macOS notarization.

Hello everyone!

The first-ever demo of Timberborn is here – now everyone and their beaver can get a taste of Timberborn! If you’ve been following Timberborn already, here’s a list of what’s changed compared to the now-retired closed beta build.

Speaking of which – if you're a closed beta player, for technical reasons you may get a message from Steam that your Timberborn beta key has been revoked, but you should be able to continue playing since the demo is public. If there are problems let us know.

Preview demo
The demo can only be played on two maps and your goal is to survive… long enough. The map editor will also be available in the full version only. You’ll have to figure out the exact limits of the demo yourselves. 😉
  • The demo ends after a few wet/dry cycles
  • You can play on two unique maps: Plains (256x256) and Canyon (128x128)
  • The map editor is not available in the preview demo
  • Some buildings are not available in the preview demo

New year, new beavers
We sneakily showed the back of the new beaver model last week, and now you can see it from all angles! The new beaver model is now in the game and it's amazing!
  • Replaced the old beaver model with a new one
  • Replaced the young beaver model with a new one (!)
  • Replaced the in-game beaver portraits

Beaver factions
Races are out, factions are in! The new beavers now conglomerate as unique factions with their own style and look.
  • Removed the old beaver races (Common Beaver, Eager Beaver, Fancy Beaver)
  • Added beaver factions — Beavers of Demoria are here only for the demo, but The Iron Teeth will appear in the Early Access along with one other faction. For Early Access launch, expect truly unique factions with exclusive buildings etc.
  • New gorgeous illustrations of the beaver factions in the faction choice screen

New main menu visuals
As the development progresses, we want the game to look better and better, and for the demo, we have completely revamped the main menu!

Audio updates
We're working with Zofia Domaradzka to bring you some amazing tracks to grace your ears while playing.
  • Added two new music tracks
  • Added a sound effect that plays when the "dry season incoming" notification starts

Bug fixes
  • Fixed a bug that caused beavers to stay in one place for long periods of time
  • Fixed a bug where buildings wouldn't show their range
  • Fixed a bug where thirsty beavers wouldn't go to drink
  • Fixed an issue with Gear Workshop consuming energy while paused

That’s all we have for you today. If you want to talk about the demo — either with us, or with other players – join our Discord server!

Hi!

You’ve been asking us to make Timberborn available to a larger audience. So, how about just letting everyone play? We've just released our first-ever, time-limited demo – just in time for Steam Game Festival starting next week! 🥳

What's in the demo?

While the Timberborn demo replaces closed beta, the included scenario gives you a dam good idea of what our beaver city-builder is going to be around the Early Access launch:

  • Irrigation – using both rivers and artificial water sources such as canals and irrigation towers, beaver water engineers keep the ground arable.
  • Dams and terraforming – you can experiment with Timberborn’s water physics by putting up modular dams, digging emergency reservoirs with dynamite, etc.
  • Stackable architecture – in Timberborn, many buildings can be placed atop one other, creating multi-level megastructures and saving limited space.
  • Lumberpunk – the evolved beavers erect buildings and craft machinery using wood and metal scavenged from human ruins.
  • Wellbeing – while the drought is the main threat in the demo, every simulated colonist has a series of needs such as Hunger, Comfort, or Spirituality you need to satisfy.

The demo is a more curated experience, aimed for a wide spectrum of players, even those less familiar with the city-building genre. Some features, such as the map editor, are disabled, and we had to cut on the sandbox-y freedom of large maps where all buildings are available.

For those who had played the game in the past, it’s a perfect opportunity to see the progress Timberborn has made. Heck, you’ll see and hear something new even if you played the game yesterday – how about the all-new beaver models? New music? Refreshed menus? Fixed bugs?

Yup! Gone are the days of our beavers impersonating Mr Potato Head!

Detailed patch notes can be found here.

Demo availability

The demo is available in English only. For early access launch, Timberborn will be available in eleven languages. You already know about English, Polish, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese versions, but we're also adding Italian, Korean and Japanese translations!

The demo is available on Steam until February 16th, 2021 – a week after Steam Game Festival ends. As we continue preparing Timberborn for the Early Access, however, we might hold additional tests in the future, be it in the updated demo or by hosting special playtest events.

CLOSED BETA PLAYERS: for technical reasons you may get a message from Steam that your Timberborn beta key has been revoked, but you should be able to continue playing since the demo is public. If there are problems let us know.

How to play Timberborn Demo?

To download the demo, simply go to Timberborn's updated Steam page and click the button at the top of the game's description.
