A demake is like a remake but with a retro vibe rather than a desire to update and refurbish. Lone Survivor [official site], Jasper Byrne’s modern classic, initially seems like it’s going to be little more than a Silent Hill demake of sorts. Then it becomes one of the few truly Lynchian games, and then it becomes something else entirely. (more…)

Night in the Woods - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

The wonderful Night In The Woods will receive “a whole bunch of new content” later this year with its ‘Weird Autumn Edition’ update, developers Infinite Fall have announced. Promising “new weird”, “new crimes”, and “old tales”, they say to “think of it as the Night In The Woods director’s cut.” I’ve just about come to terms with the initial coming-of-age crisis so sure, I should be up for more when the free update hits on December 13th. A hundred Halloween horrors start this way: driving through the wilds, a vehicle becomes stuck and its driver faces a harrowing ordeal. Will they escape and live to see another dawn or will they be found in a shallow grave? A hundred Halloween horrors may start this way but few are nearly as tense and trying as Spintires: MudRunner, which launched overnight. It’s an expanded re-release of 2014’s fantastic driving-through-mud simulator Spintires, which comes fancied up a little but most importantly freed from the troubled relationship with previous publishers Oovee. MudRunner is a separate paid release, not a free upgrade, though Spintires owners do get a discount. (more…)

Dota 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Two brand new heroes have arrived in Dota 2 with the launch of version 7.07, the long-awaited Duelling Fates update. Please welcome to the battle arena Dark Willow, a spoOoky nuker, and the zippy swordsman Pangolier. They’re the first new heroes added since the Monkey King way back in December 2016. The update is far bigger than just this pair, also adding new items, a new model for Ancient Apparition, seasons for ranked play, and oodles of skill changes and balance tweaks. (more…)

EVE Online - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Adam Smith)

CCP, creators of one of our favourite VR games, EVE Valkyrie, are ceasing all VR development, according to a report on Icelandic business site mbl.is. The Reykjav k-based studio is best-known for its fantastically complex MMO EVE Online but has invested heavily in VR games. Sci-fi dogfighting sim Valkyrie is its flagship goggle-game, but one-on-one ball-lobbing sport Sparc (currently PSVR only) is a bit of a cracker as well. I see this as a blow to the viability of VR as a major gaming platform not only because Valkyrie is one of the few games that makes the tech tempting to me, despite being available in non-VR form as well, but also because CCP have sounded so bullish about the field in the past.

Gather round, Destineers, and take a look at the trailer for Destiny 2‘s first expansion. The new stuff doesn’t start until around 20 seconds in, where we see everyone’s favourite Guardian stroll up to Ikora for a chat about “an ancient gate” that’s opened on Mercury, where “an army of past and future machines amasses”. Looks like The Curse of Osiris will be a… Vex-pansion!

Sorry. You can watch the trailer for yourself after the jump.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Rowdy luchadors will return for more metroidvania action with Guacamelee! 2 next year, developers DrinkBox Studios have announced. Bad things are happening again, so we’ll need to fight them again. This is good news, as our John declared the first game “a cut above the rest, a shining example of the form” as a Metroidvania – but a game blighted by bad boss battles. That was then and this is now. Have a peek at Guacamelee! 2 in today’s announcement trailer: (more…)

Ride the lining

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.>

Line Rider is a thing of beauty. A simple draw-your-own-sledding-slope game that became a phenomenon among the right kind of internet denizen. As simple to learn as doodling in MS Paint and yet difficult to manipulate with true mastery. What do you do, it asked the time-wealthy citizens of the information superhighway, when your canvas is beholden to a tiny, adorable boy with a sled? Well, answered the internet, you create a god damn masterpiece. (more…)

With tonight being Devil’s Night – an event that The Crow taught us all occurs the night before Halloween itself and usually involves revenge murders – it’s a pretty good time to stock up on some horror games in order to make the most of the season of spooks.

Over at Humble right now, you can get a bunch of particularly good games with a horror bent, with up to 90% off the range on offer. This sale range is set to finish in a matter of days, so you’ve got a little bit of time to make a decision but if you’d prefer to spend Halloween night scaring yourself stupid, you may want to grab something sooner rather than later.
