Warhammer: Chaosbane - Nacon

We wanted to update you all on our post-launch plans. We’ve got two exciting additional expansions planned for Warhammer: Chaosbane, a NEW hero class, and a NEW zone coming post-launch. Best of all, these will be FREE additions to the game.

We’ll reveal more about the new hero class in the future. This character will launch alongside a new zone, one focused primarily on expanding the endgame; expect new enemies, new gear, and another part of the Old World to explore. We are working on an updated roadmap that will include these new additions, we’ll share this in a future update.

Next week we will release the first post-launch patch. This includes the new endgame mode, Invasion (which you can read more about here). A unique experience with its own rules, gear, and mechanics. The team has tireless to provide this new endgame offering, and we can’t wait for you to jump in and experience the Corruption yourselves. This patch also includes a number of bug fixes, balance changes, and community request additions, so make sure you check it out.

We’re focused on improving the overall Chaosbane experience, squashing bugs, addressing community feedback and adding new content to the game. Our goal is to provide fans of the Warhammer universe and Hack and Slash experts alike with an experience that meets their expectations.

Please Note: These free additions to the game have not changed our plans for the season pass content, which will see our heroes venture into the realms of the Tomb Kings.
Warhammer: Chaosbane - Nacon

Howdy Everyone,

Wanted to get back to you with some information about what's been going on, and our planned updates + patch notes for next week. Keep in mind, these aren't final, some things may change, but they should serve to give a general idea of what you can expect.

NEW GAME MODE - INVASION

An Invasion map is played out on randomly generated levels from specific acts, Boss Fights or Arena battles with waves of enemies. Each Invasion tree node may be modified by some alterations, depending on the dark god they’re related to (poison for Nurgle, Magic Shields for Tzeentch as examples).

During this time, you’ll also be fighting against Corruption. This manifests as a life draining effect that players will have to endure. Each map has a corruption value, which becomes increasingly harsher the further a player moves away from the origin of the Invasion node trees. At the end of each invasion tree branch, you unlock powerful rewards that are exclusive to this mode, including: new skills, new heroic jewels and new potion effects.

The difficulty of Invasion is also defined by its Rank. Finishing an Invasion at a specific Rank will unlock higher Ranks and tougher Invasions. Try to find new rarity objects to become stronger and aim to complete the highest Rank possible. Invasion will release with the next patch.

Patch Notes
PLEASE NOTE: These are not final, but should give a general idea of what you can expect!

Features:

  • Adding an option to display loot permanently.
  • Adding two new difficulty levels, Chaos 6 and Chaos 7.

  • Damage over time effects (poison, bleeding, etc) will no longer kill players. If a player is very low on health, DOT effects will not bring them to below 1HP.
Technical Updates:
  • Option added to activate or deactivate Depth of Field
  • Option added to activate or deactivate temporal anti-aliasing.
  • Option added to activate or deactivate MLAA.
  • Option added to activate or deactivate volumetric lighting

Warhammer: Chaosbane - Nacon
Version 1.0 of Warhammer: Chaosbane is live. It’s been an intense experience and a lot of hard work. Thank you to everyone who's been playing, and for all the feedback, both positive and negative.

We’ve got a lot of data to sort through. Regardless of how much preparation you do, the first few days of launch dwarf any preparation that is done prior. We’re reading through the forums, Reddit, Social Media, Discord and bug reporting form in order to centralize your feedback. So we can break it into action points and come back to you with our next steps.

The Bigben team is answering the community as much as possible, and they’ll be working with us to ensure you’re kept up to date about our next steps. For us at Eko, we’ve got some bugs to squash and will be spending our time and energy on improving the game.

We have a series of plans to support, extend and improve Chaosbane. We won’t be able to solve everything in one day, but we’re dedicated to ensuring that we're moving in the right direction.

We should have the first update next week, with an update description later this week. Bigger updates will require a little more time, especially since we’re working within a license we love, but one that needs to be respected.

We’ve got some exciting things. So stay tuned, and once again thank you for your feedback and support.

Chaos will be defeated!
Eko Software team.
Warhammer: Chaosbane

Chaosbane is exactly what you’d expect if you heard the words “mid-budget Warhammer Diablo clone”. No more, no less. You pick one of four heroes, you kill endless hordes of creatures and you loot progressively shinier trousers, stopping occasionally to fight a larger, tougher monster with an annoying area attack. That’s it. I wouldn’t call it a bad game, but it is a mediocre and derivative one, and far too repetitive for its own good. It’s Diablo, but Warhammer.

The Warhammer licence does help a little, particularly in the enemy design. Each Act is framed as a battle against followers of a different chaos god (representing war, magic, disease and sexy times respectively), and there’s a deep pool of appropriate monsters to draw from for each, including a big end of level boss. I particularly enjoyed fighting Slaanesh, whose agile followers would backflip out of combat and manoeuvre around, preventing fights from descending into one big mosh pit.

Technically there’s a story that links these acts together, but it’s so basic my eyes started glazing over in the very first cutscene. I didn’t expect a compelling narrative, but after the cheerful banter of Vermintide and Mechanicus, I was hoping for something at least mildly entertaining. The standard is pretty high for Warhammer tie-ins nowadays, and Chaosbane fails to reach them.

Chaosbane’s big problem is repetition. There’s so little variation in the combat. Despite a handful of new skills unlocking my basic approach, hold down attack, hit an area attack when surrounded and a health draining attack when hurt, didn’t change much between hour one and hour fifteen, despite the ability to swap around skills at will. One of my attacks noted that it ignored armour, but since there was no real indicator which enemies were heavily armoured and which were not, it was impossible to figure out when to use it effectively, and I soon traded it for another big area attack.

Loot didn’t hold my interest either. The majority of items are uninteresting stat boosts that don’t materially change the way you play. Perhaps real game changer items lurk deep into the endgame, but in the time I had with Chaosbane I didn't encounter any. The mark of a good action RPG is that you should be regularly getting new skills or items that make you want to change your style and approach things differently, and Chaosbane doesn’t do this anywhere near often enough for my liking.

Part of this might have been due to the fact that I spent the majority of my time playing as the trollslayer (in my defence, orange mohawked dwarves are rad). Unfortunately, he mostly just performs different kinds of axe swing, while occasionally picking up better tattoos. Things got a bit more interesting when I restarted as a high elf mage, who had a nice floaty orb attack that could be redirected with the right stick to waggle it in and out of the daemons.

One thing I did enjoy was the bloodlust orbs: every now and then an enemy will spit out a glowing red globule. Grab one and it’ll heal you up; collect enough and you’ll be able to activate a “super” mode where your character is nigh indestructible and deals massive damage. What makes it work is that the orbs only stick around for a few seconds, meaning you’re forced to manoeuvre around the arena in order to grab them mid-fight. It gives you something to think about other than watching a big bunch of numbers pop up, which is what Chaosbane desperately needs.

I only got to spend a short time with Chaosbane’s multiplayer for this review. It was fairly easy to drop into a random game, even with the low number of people online pre-release, but when I got there the enemies exhibited a pronounced tendency to awkwardly rubber band towards one player or another. It didn't make the game unplayable, but it was noticeable. There was also a bug where damage numbers occasionally became huge and took up the entire screen, but I’m certainly not complaining about that. I hope they never fix it: it’s hilarious.

More promising is the inclusion of four player local co-op, which is so easy to set up I actually managed to start it accidentally mid-dungeon. You can even combine local and online co-op. That’s the one context in which I can see myself going back to Chaosbane, when you just want to throw something on in big picture mode to play with a bunch of mates.

It’s hard to blame Chaosbane for just being an unoriginal action RPG, but ultimately I found myself asking over and over, 'Why don’t I just play Diablo instead?' And that is a question the game fundamentally fails to answer.

Oi. Mate. See that skull? That is the skull of a demon who stood betwixt my axe whirling dwarf and a nice new pair of trousers, for I have been playing angry Topman visit simulator Warhammer: Chaosbane, a serviceable ARPG that s a fair bit more interesting than Diablo 3 but probably slightly less interesting than a top end hand blender. Confused? Excellent. Let the merciless torture of wonky metaphors commence.

Warhammer: Chaosbane

Warhammer: Chaosbane, the hack-and-slash dungeon crawler that’s bringing Diablo sensibilities to Games Workshop’s Old World, now has a story trailer that provides the backdrop for all the Nurgling-smashing you’ll be doing in its subterranean caverns.

Chaosbane starts a few years after the Chaos invasion of 2301, and the sacking of Praag, the largest city in the northern realm of Kislev. Magnus the Pious eventually leads an Imperial army against Chaos, and slays its champion Kul in battle outside the walls of Praag.

According to Warhammer lore, Magnus was then crowned Emperor, and this is the backdrop for the action in Chaosbane. The animated trailer doesn’t really connect these larger, world-level events to the game itself, but it seems clear that your job will be to purge the remnants of Chaos from the region and prevent them from reconstituting a warfighting force.

There’s no gameplay in this trailer, either—but if you’d like to see some of Chaosbane’s characters in action, we’ve already seen the wood elf and dwarfen slayer in-game.

Warhammer: Chaosbane is right around the corner—the game launches June 4.

Warhammer: Chaosbane - Nacon
Just wanted to give a little more clarity for what you can expect from the end-game and some of our plans for post-launch with Chaosbane. We're still working on a video which will go into a little more detail about these systems (looking to have that out next week), so I can't go into full detail, though I'll try and collate everything that we've been talking about and sharing over the last few weeks.

Season Pass - 4 Pieces of Post-Launch DLC Content
  • Cosmetic Pets
  • Cosmetic Emotes
  • An alternative God Skill Tree for each character (new passive and active abilities, new ways to build your character, by making offerings to a new god).
  • Entire new act to the game (new location, new enemies, new story - unrelated to the main campaign).

I can't say where you'll be going (I'd love to), but if Chaosbane is about fighting ALL of the forces of Chaos, you might be surprised to know that the last act will be about not fighting the forces of Chaos.

Please Note: The season pass content is not currently in development. We'll be working on it after the release of Warhammer: Chaosbane. Currently our focus is on final polish ahead of our release in a couple of weeks.

Non-Season Pass Updates
We'll also have some updates planned for all players, so additions like the inclusion of a hardcore (permadeath) mode. New additional levels of difficulty. The inclusion of a post-level cap leveling system (which will come after launch). We also have plans to add additional heroic sets to the game, which you'll need to tackle the additional difficulty levels that will also be added to the game (and some of the modes we're about to mention).

End-Game Modes
  • Boss Rush

Boss Rush Mode allows you to farm out certain types of gear by aiming to take on the bosses you've previously defeated.

  • Expedition Mode

Expedition Mode allows you to traverse a number of randomly generated maps, collecting the fragments you'll need to power up your gear. You'll also come across a number of random events that increase your chances at rewards, but may make things more difficult.

  • Relic Hunt Mode

Relic Hunt is our 3rd end game mode, with large loot and fragment rewards, but a number of conditions that really add a challenging edge to your explorations. So, for a few examples:

  • Random poison zones across the map
  • You lose health as soon as you stop moving
  • Every time a hero uses a potion, his maximum health decreases permanently in the dungeon
  • Every time a hero takes damage, his armor decreases permanently in the dungeon.
  • When enemies life bars are low, they gain a few seconds invincibility.

Relic maps are purchased with in game gold, and come at a pretty hefty price. So make sure to bring your A game: https://twitter.com/WHChaosbane/status/1127257065750032385

Gear Augmentation + God Skills + Gear

Throughout your adventure, you're collecting fragments from defeating the creatures of Chaos. These are used to both make offering to your patron gods, choosing powerful active and passive skills that suit your playstyle.

However, these are also used to boost the power of your gear. Combinations of different fragments provide different effects, as does combining these fragments. We posted a photo about it here: https://twitter.com/WHChaosbane/status/1124340067311525888

Certain items have special effects too, for example in our Boss Rush image you could see that the mage is using a staff that raises a wall of flame around the character: https://twitter.com/WHChaosbane/status/1126169895710883841
