Terroir - genintco
To our amazing Terroir players,

We hope that the holiday season finds you well (and if you don't subscribe to the relevant belief system, we hope you're doing just as well). We've got a huge update for you, and one that we kept under wraps this whole time. See, we've announced in the past that the next update after the last was going to have one simple addition: the Blending feature. But Jenny and I really thought this one through - sure, adding the Blending feature would add another activity in the winemaking process, but would it really enrich the game beyond just having new choices and decisions to make? Actually, yeah, maybe. But what we felt would truly add a whole new dimension to Terroir, and bring much more replayability and value to the game was to introduce some form of competition - it would be more fun to run your own wine Estate while competing with others.

So, after 2 weeks of nearly non-stop work (except for the occasional lunch break), we present to you Terroir 2.3.

Let's begin with the biggest new feature: A.I. competitors. Yes, that's right, you can now choose to play with up to 3 A.I.-controlled winemakers (or none at all). You can choose how many to play against in the difficulty settings menu that pops up before you start a new game.

A.I. competitors will spawn near your own vineyard, and will compete with you for new land. You can buy their tiles at a cost (or buy them off completely by purchasing their estate tile), and they can send you offers to purchase your own tiles. They grow at a steady rate, depending on the weather (too much rain and their Yields will suffer), and once they've accumulated enough money, they will purchase a new tile every year to add to their vineyard. Playing against A.I. competitors will give you a bonus to your final score.

Another new feature in 2.3 is Market Saturation. Simply put, it's a measure of how much supply of a particular wine there is in the market. This affects that wine's base price - too much of a certain wine, and its base price drops. Too little, and it increases. A player directly affects Market Saturation by the amount of wine he sells, and random small changes occur every year to the market saturation levels of each wine type. Noble Rot Semillon and Grenache Rose are exempted from the effects of Market Saturation.

You can open the Market Saturation window by clicking on the newest icon in the icon tray, shown below:

In addition to this, we've made a few more tweaks and fixes:

  • Fixed bugs in the financial reporting system.
  • Fixed bugs in the Full Time Vineyard Workers system.
  • Improved load times by introducing custom splash screens.
  • Updates to the text tutorial.

We really hope you enjoy these new features. We also hope that your year's end is filled with happiness, gaming and multiple glasses of wine of various varieties.

Happy winemaking!

Winemakers!

It's so good to see our community grow day by day. In our journey to providing you with as rich and fulfilling a game as we can make, we are happy to announce a big new update in Terroir v2.2 today.

So here's a quick rundown of what you'll find in this new version:

New Grape Varieties

We've got 2 new grape varieties: Sémillon and Grenache. Sémillon is a white wine grape variety, and Grenache makes reds. They're perfectly fins on their own, and you can make 5-star wines out of them. But to really make the most out of them, you'll need an extra step in the winemaking process.

Sémillon can be made into a sweet wine (inspired by the famous sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac) that, if rated by the most prestigious wine critics, is the most expensive wine in the game. To create it, you'll have to do something most of you dread - allow Fungal Rot to infect the grape. At the end of every month, the Fungal Rot has a chance to turn into Noble Rot. When you harvest Sémillon with the Noble Rot status effect, your wine turns into sweet wine, and if the ideal characteristics are met, you're all set.

Grenache allows you to make the world-famous Rosé types of wine. The process is simpler - all you need to do is make sure you select the Vin Gris Crushing method in the crushing stage of the winemaking process.

Sémillon and Grenache have their own categories at the Wine Awards, while Grenache Rosé and Noble Rot Sémillon can be entered into Best in Craft.

Uprooting Vines and Selling Tiles

You can now uproot planted vines in your Planting Tiles by clicking on the tile and pressing the UPROOT button. Please bear in mind that the vine will be gone for good, and you won't get money for it.

You can also sell any of your owned tiles (except your Estate, of course). You'll get 50% of what you paid for the tile back, and the newly-sold tile will have its re-roll history reset.

Other Additions

There's a new Wine Log, which can be accessed by clicking on its icon in your upper icon tray. The icon is shown below:

The Wine Log will show you all the wines you've ever bottled, their characteristics, flavors, rating and price. This will make it easy to keep track of your winemaking progress.

We've also added a progress bar below the month on your right hand panel. This will show you how much time is left before the month is up, therefore making it easier to manage your canopy as you'll know when a weather cycle is about to happen (remember, a weather cycle happens at the beginning and middle of each month).

We've added new Steam achievements as well, which you'll find in the game's Steam client page.

Updates and Fixes

We've updated the text tutorial to include all of these new changes - it's still the best way to learn about the game's mechanics and features, so make sure you use it often.

We've updated the weather system once again to lessen the chances of rain during the summer months.

We've also fixed a few minor bugs, including one involving the Automated Tile Worker.

Well, that's it from us - we're looking forward to hearing what you think. Let us know on the discussion boards, and if you run into any difficulties or issues, please let us know. If you like the game so far, please don't forget to leave us a review!

Hi everyone,

We are extremely happy at the positive feedback we've been getting from players and the press, and incredibly motivated to keep making the game better thanks to the critical feedback from some players. To anyone who has stayed with us since the early days when the game was still on Early Access, you'll know that we are committed to making Terroir better through your feedback and continued support.

Having said that, we believe you guys deserve at the very least a sneak peek into the content we're working on for future updates. First thing's first - the next update. Some time next week, hopefully before the 21st or 22nd of November, we'll be releasing a very large update with a lot of new content and features. These include:

  • A Wine Log, which will show you details of all the wines you've ever bottled, their rating, their price and their characteristics and flavors.
  • A progress bar showing the passing of time per month - that means you'll get an indication of how long you have left before the next month arrives.
  • Two new grape varieties, which are Semillon and Grenache. These two varieties aren't just new grapes with new ideal characteristics - they will be used to create wines that require an additional step or decision in the winemaking process. I won't spoil it for you, but we will get into the details in the update announcement upon release.
  • New achievements and wine awards tied in to the new grape varieties.
  • The ability to uproot vines in owned Planting Tiles.
  • The ability to sell owned tiles.

In addition to next week's update, we're also working on this year's final update and the last batch of new content for the forseeable future, which will feature the long awaited Blending mechanic. This will come with a new grape variety (potentially two), as well as a new C&C mission and corresponding Steam achievements and Wine Awards.

I would also like to address the possibility of localization. We have been in touch with localization agencies and volunteers in the past, yet things have always come along that have made it difficult to pursue for our very small team. In the case of professional localization, the costs were always a little outside our budget. In terms of volunteers, the sheer volume of text needed to be translated is huge, and as volunteers are generously donating their free time, we expect it to take many weeks or months before we can get the game completely localized in one language.

However, we do hope to at least localize the game in one language (the frontrunner is German) before the end of the year. We cannot promise this as we are still hoping to scrape together the funds to pay for the localization, but if we can find the means, rest assured we will get it done.

As usual, thank you all very much for your continued support. We wouldn't be here without you.

I would like to humbly ask that if you enjoy the game so far, please do us a huge favor by giving us a positive review, if you believe we deserve it. As a small indie studio, we don't have the PR power of larger teams, and we rely solely on word of mouth. When you tell other players that our game is worth a try, it's more valuable than an advertising campaign. When you leave us a positive review on Steam, it helps us beyond words.

We hope you'll enjoy the upcoming new content, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts on it next week.

Many thanks, and may your grapes grow fat and your wine age gracefully.

Hello winemakers,

We hope you're having an awesome halloween. Jenny and I continue to grapple with the forces of evil (late nights and never enough coffee) as we introduce more optimizations and features to Terroir, and are happy to share with you the latest version.

In version 2.1.3, you will find the following changes and additions:

  • You can now assign hotkeys for all Worker Actions - that means easier access to all your tools and actions.
  • Added text feedback over your Estate that shows cash flow - that means you'll know how much money you earned or spent at the end of each month.
  • Made changes to the probabilities of rain during the summer - expect a little bit less rain during the summer months now.
  • Added more debt cushioning - you can go further below the previous negative limit, and you can use this cushion to bottle your wines (previously, once you go into the negatives money-wise, you can no longer spend).
  • Fixed an error with renaming Taverns - call them what you will now!
  • Added a new splash screen

More of these updates coming your way! Hope you enjoy them.

More updates and fixes!

Aright, so we've got 2 new additions:

  • Added support for 21:9 screens
  • Video players are now turned off when not in use

That last point was done in an effort to improve performance, as previously, the video players were always in a ready-to-play state. Hopefully this will result in some improvement in overall performance.

Many thanks, talk to y'all soon!
