Paradox today released the first bit of paid DLC for Stellaris [official site], adding a Plantoid species type to their space strategy game. It’s only a collection of cosmetic doodahs but they are pretty ones – check out the gorgeous new portaits. Aren’t those great? I’m not being funny, right, but I am enjoying imagining how they would feel to the touch. Meanwhile, Paradox have also returned from their summer holidays to work on the next major free update, nicknamed ‘Heinlein’, and they’ve started teasing features such as a new Federation victory condition.
Stellaris may be on the cusp of welcoming its first official Species pack later this week, however its keen modding community has hardly taken a breath since the game s launch back in May. The latest mod to impress is G-Man s Star Trek New Horizons a total conversion that follows the entire canon timeline from 2150 s Enterprise era through to 2400 and beyond.
It s in the early stages of development, but New Horizons already packs a host of tweaks and tinkerings that give Stellaris a flavour of the ST universe. There are 38 pre-scripted races, for example, with canon starting positions; as well as five playable factions and their ships, including: United Earth, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Vulcan High Command and Gorn Hegemony. While not exclusive to this mod, civilian trade is also a welcomed addition.
Relevant to the Enterprise era and that of the original series, the mod introduces replica uniforms and portraits specific to each time period; it adds new Torpedo weapons and shields; new races; and the The Borg in place of the Scourge crisis events featured in the original game. The full list of changes can be found on the mod s Steam Workshop and ModDB pages and, as it s a work-in-progress, promises to add more in the coming months.
"As this will be a total conversion we plan on creating a whole new canon static universe with proper factions, ships, portraits and storytelling," says its creators. "Prepare to relive your favourite episodes and movies, this mod will guide you through the entire canon Star Trek timeline."
Plantoids will be the first new lifeforms added to Stellaris [official site] in a ‘Species Pack’, developers Paradox announced today. As is fairly typical for their grand strategy games, the pack will add unique portraits and models for a variety of plantpeople. It’s not a huge deal but hey, if you’ve been waiting for word on actual expansions then you might like knowing Paradox are at least getting the DLC train rolling.
Between its multitude of user-made mods and expansive mid-game lull-fixing patches, the Stellaris universe has steadily grown since its release earlier this year. Today, Paradox revealed the first Species pack to breach the space-flung 4X-meets-grand-strategy s bounds will be the Plantoids Species a new bunch of botany-beautiful phenotypes freshly picked for intergalactic domination. There's no mention of price for the pack just yet, but they'll be landing August 4 in any event.
This first species pack will be called Plantoids, and, as its name suggests, will introduce sentient plant life to the universe of Stellaris, reads the announcement. Instead of becoming salad or animal fodder, these plants have reached for the stars and begun to spread their tendrils across the galaxy, planting the roots of new civilizations on new planets.
With that, the upcoming add-on will bring with it not only a new playable species, but also 15 new portraits, a new cityscape background, and a range of new ship models for players to tinker with. I could be mistaken, but looks like a new warp animation too.
In other Stellaris news, Paradox have also released a Stellaris Ebook and a Stellaris OST both of which are available to buy via Steam and the Paradox Store, if that sort of thing floats your Destroyer.Look out for the Plantoids come August 4.
