Rising Hell - p0tastic
Greetings Mortals!

First of all, we would like to apologize for the lack of communications and updates. 2020 was definitely a hell of a ride for a lot of us. Although we had to move around, delay, and push back a lot of updates, we still managed to deliver most of the contents in the roadmap we pushed at the beginning of last year.

But worry not! We are approaching the final gates! We are pushing to deliver the 1.0 release of Rising Hell really soon!

Here are what we are working on right now:
  • More contents for 1.0! Including the final boss and endings.

    who could it be!?

  • Tweaking and improving the balance of Talents, Relics, and Warriors! We want the player to have freedom to explore as many builds as they like.

for a balanced soul economy in hell!

  • Overall game polish and bug fix! We are continuously improving the game by squashing bugs and adding more polish.

    some hell residents are unpredictable...

  • More languages! We are working with our localization team to deliver more languages for the game, as well as improving existing languages.

    Hell's committee going worldwide!

  • Console ports! More news on this later. šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„
Phew! Just a bit stretch more to our final target!

Hello Mortals,

We are here with something different than usual. Today, we have our Hell Master, Kriswin Yuniar, aka Rising Hell's Game & Art Director, breaking down the design choices of the game universe's environment.

The Game's Premise

Players progress as they go up the platforms, attempting to literally get out of hell. That is the basic explanation of this vertical rogue-lite platformer. The game itself was heavily inspired by Downwell, which is also a vertical platformer.

(Click here to find out about the inspiration for Rising Hell.)

Why go up? This will take us to the gameā€™s version of hell as described by Kriswin. According to him, the universe of Rising Hell mainly refers to the Abrahamic religionā€™s concept of heaven and hell, hence the appearance of Lucifer, Belial, Beelzebub, and many other demons in it. From there, the concept is modified with other mythologies/beliefs so as to make the lore distinguishable from the existing ones.

In Rising Hellā€™s version, hell was created from Luciferā€™s body, who was defeated alongside his army and shackled with the roots of the Zaqqum tree by the army of heaven.

The concept of hell that was born from within a tree was influenced by Norse mythologyā€™s Yggdrasil (the World Tree), meanwhile, the name ā€œZaqqumā€ was adapted from the cursed tree in the Islamic belief.

When you play Rising Hell, you will start from the bottom and then go all the way up. Each time you are progressing to the next level, you will see different environments as well. Let us tell you the uniqueness of each level.

1st Realm: Pit of Torment

Pit of Torment is the place where you begin your journey. This is the place where sinners and rebellious demons are punished. Their souls are fragmented into red and green crystals, which then consumed by other demons in order for them to survive. This is why the monsters in this domain are more savage, and the place itself is designed to look ā€˜mercilessā€™. Pit of Torment is ruled by Dagon, the False Judge.

2nd Realm: Beelzebubā€™s Lair

The second realm adapts a more gruesome design. This is because the ruler of the place is no other than Beelzebub himself. In Beelzebubā€™s Lair, the weak are meat, and the strong do eat. Weak demons are bound to perish in the hands of stronger demons. As the place is designed as a colony of insects, the monsters also resemble the entity.

3rd Realm: Citadel of the Faithless

After you went through the first and the second realm, you will arrive at a more established-looking place. Citadel of the Faithless is where demons build a civilization in hell. It is more or less a city for elite demons. If youā€™ve reached this level, you can also see it from the behavior of the demons. They have clever moves. It was said that there is a portal inside the citadel which connects to the outside world.

Is it true that you can get out of hell through that portal? To answer that question, youā€™re gonna have to find out yourself, of course. šŸ˜ˆ

Thank you for reading, and do tell us if you wish to read more devlog in the future!

Yours Truly,

Hell Renovation Committee

Hello Mortals,

Good job on staying alive in hell for this long! As expected from the chosen warrior, you've used the Hellsbane quite stunningly.

But the real question is, among the other mortals out there, are you really the one worthy to wield the power of Hellsbane? To answer that question, we have prepared a new game mode called the Weekly Challenge mode!

In the Weekly Challenge mode, you will be assigned with the same character, starting relic, seed, and modifier with the others. For a one-week time span, we'll see who's the best warrior out there!

If you're up to the challenge, you can always hop into the public beta branch by following these steps.

And, as always, that's not the only thing that we're working on. See the full list of the patch here:

  • New Game Start Menu!
  • Added options to enable or disable screen shake in the settings menu.
  • Added options to enable or disable automatic Hellbreak in the settings menu.
  • Added Achievements for slaying Abaddon, Magog, Beleth, and Lilith.
  • Added Grimoire entries for Abaddon, Magog, Beleth, and Lilith.
  • Added Weekly Challenge mode.
  • Added Japanese on language selection.
  • Fixed input button remapping for keyboard.
  • Fixed a bug where player will encounter same stage layout every time.
  • Fixed bug where players were not able climb up of the room after defeating Beleth.
  • Fixed Succubus' hug animation for Sydna and Arok
  • Fixed bug where player character is invisible after acquiring Abaddon's Guard artifact.
  • Fixed bug on Succubus hug sprite where Sydna's explosive balls are not included
  • Fixed bug on Succubus hug sprite where Sydna is getting caught even though she is not on within attack range.
  • Fixed bug on Dasael's clones when attacked by player
  • Fixed bug where Sydna's orbs always went to the right side when attacking after player obtains a talent.
  • Increased life point of enemies and Archdemons
  • Keyboard user can now press "Confirm" to "Skip" cutscenes
  • Platform reposition in certain stages so player unable to go back down further after coming out of a portal.
  • Improved game performance

We hope you're ready for more (literal) ground-breaking challenges!

Sincerely,

Hell Renovation Committee

Hello Mortals,

Come forward as we bring you a new challenge!

Here we have the promised new character available to unlock! Sydna is a holy spirit who is chosen as one of the wielders of hellbane, the cursed claw.

Different from Arok who is a melee fighter and Zelos who is more of a long-range fighter, Sydna's mechanic is a bit unique. We believe that you can get used to it faster than Atrophos vanishing from your screen, because, you're still standing still even after going through layers of hell, right?

Sydna hurls deadly Phantasmal orbs as her weapon. The orb attaches to nearby allies, dealing only a small amount of damage, but after a while or when enough orbs are attached to enemies, they explode, dealing massive area damage.

Go try it yourself, unlock Sydna now!

Yours Truly,

Hell Renovation Committee
