Hello everyone and happy Friday! We've had an exciting couple of weeks with more development and game testing.



The first multiplayer stress test
We finally had our first multiplayer stress together with the community to see how far we could push the capacity of the server. The server had a peak at 68 players running around at the same time, which is better than we imagined. There was another stress test yesterday and we will have a third stress test on June 11th, 3pm CEST. Testing is available for all of our Patreon supporters.



Half pass animation
More animations are in progress, and here you can see a very early version of the half pass. It still has a long way to go, but we're getting there!




Tack room, judge's booth, scoreboards, podiums and fences
More assets for the competition rings are in the works. The judge's booth, scoreboard and podium. There will be a variation of fences and gates around the world. Wood, bricks, plastic, and more. There will of course be more color variations as well.



Summer splash art
We've finally moved on to summer, and that occasion brings forward a new splash art!



Horse hair and fur
We are still working on the Icelandic horse, but more onto the actual hair and fur. The hair and fur can be used for all of the horses and is why we are spending so much time on it now. With a perfected method of making hair, creating new styles with the same, good quality will be easier. And once the fur is done and to the quality we want, the fur can be applied for all the current and future horses - with some variations. A lot of tedious work now for a better workflow later! What is essentially happening here, is that we are feeding information about which way the hairs should grow. For example, in the hip and flank area, there is a long hair whorl where the fur direction changes three times and merges in different places. This was especially tricky to get right. The hairs may be a bit difficult to see here.

Renryuu: Ascension - naughty-netherpunch

Update 22.06.03 changes:
- Kayelinth is now available for marriage after her CG scene on the farm you build for her, and after the events with Jaylin about the different shapes of dragonics.
- After her marriage, talk with Kayelinth again for a short quest, which'll give you a new CG scene with her. [Requires the CG scene with Kavrala in Orchel.]
- In the nature dungeon below a big tree on one of the brexeet islands, where you have to run from button to button to get to the treasure while the crystals are gone, I changed the buttons to increase the time until the crystals re-appear slightly each time you press it. This is supposed to prevent people from getting stuck, as especially people playing with trackpads on laptops had a hard time to do the race properly.
- The pimp Kuthy was added to the brothel in Central. She appears when you leave and re-enter the brothel after the CG scenes with a raijuu, cowgirl, blue slimegirl, red slimegirl, and green slimegirl.
- I made a change to the teleport stones. They now bring you to the same screen as the teleport stone plates, which you can unlock in different locations after learning about them in Dorgania. This way you can access the entire teleport network from everywhere where teleporting is allowed.

Memories ≠ Burdens

Each season's battle pass is a cornerstone with which we convey the season's theme and the uniqueness of each civilization. We want all of you to have lasting memories of the various civilizations, not only in the form of units but also with attires and titles.

We've received plenty of feedback on Conqueror's Path and we've contemplated its reward distribution and the design of weekly challenges. All in all, neither fully meets our expectations.

We believe there's no better time than now to rework and improve these. We want each Battle Pass to be a treasury of rewards rather than a burden to bear.

Improved Ranked Battle Mechanic

Ranked Battle is one of Conqueror's Blade's most unique game modes: a competitive platform with its own scoring. It is the big stage where Warlords must hone their skills to perfect and grow stronger if they wish to reign supreme.

However, as it stands now in Ranked Battle, unreasonable mechanics has led to high pressure, overall negatively affecting the experience. And that's not something we're happy with.

To remedy this, we're introducing a new star-tier mechanic with the Helheim season. Hopefully, this will improve the situation and truly make Ranked Battle into the big stage it should be.

Each tier has a specific number of battle stars required to rank up. Earn enough stars, and you will promote to the next rank. Stars are earned for winning ranked battles and are deducted, scaling with your ranked tier on a battle loss.

If you lose a battle with 0 stars for your current tier, you will not de-rank to the previous tier unless you are currently on the Lord Commander or Marshal ranks. After achieving the rank of Marshal, you will start receiving Ranked Battle Score. Your rank is then based on your score.

For example, a player with the rank of Corporal, Sergeant, or Vanguard would need 2 Stars to be promoted, would receive 1 Star for a win, and no loss penalties or de-ranks.

Clearer Beginner Tutorial

We want Hero's Path to serve as a guide for newer players as they learn the ropes and a means with which to close the gap to more veteran players. It's an important system that enables players to quickly gain more freedom in the game. However, the current quest and reward design don't attain this effect. Instead, it makes it more difficult for newer players to learn the game and prevents them from gaining power as quickly as otherwise possible.

And so, we've reworked these to better suit our new players. Naturally, these changes won't affect your current quest progress. However, if you want to clear the quests available in Hero's Path right now, we advise you do so before the update hits. (Check the coming notice for the exact changes)

Norsemen on the Warpath

"The brave Norse has taken the fight to Helheim, and there they prepare for war!"

And with the war, other Norse units awaken too: Fenrir's Pack, Odin's Berserkers, and Sigrun's Shieldmaidens! These three units will all receive balance changes.

All three units have deep Norse characteristics and bring their unique charm to Conqueror's Blade. However, these characteristics make it difficult for them to perform well in the current meta.

We'll be focusing further on their unique features and combat styles. These once glorious Norsemen return in pomp and flair on June 16. (Check the coming notice for the exact changes)

Apart from all of this, we'll also continue to improve the other systems currently in the game and keep an eye on how weapons perform, such as the Nodachi, Pike, and Poleaxe. (Check the coming Complete Helheim Update Log for more info)

This is the first devlog for Remnant Records. It gives some insight on the behind the scenes of the development process.

THE EXORCISM PHASE
One of the most common criticisms we’ve received on the main gameplay loop was the exorcism phase. It’s pretty cool for the first few times; players anxiously light up the candle, sigh with relief when they see it turn blue, then hold their breath again trying to survive the inevitable pursuit. However, this system has some glaring problems.

First problem, it gets old fast. Once you’ve learned that the optimal strategy is most of the times simply hiding in a closet, you just do that and wait for time to tick. You either get caught or you don’t, but it feels more like a luck-based situation than a tense gameplay segment.

Second problem, this mechanic is apparently very confusing for some players. I’ve watched a lot of friends and acquaintances play the game, as it gives me very interesting insight on how new players perceive the game. When their first exorcism succeeds, most players freeze. I would have thought their survival instinct would kick in and they would either try to run away or hide somewhere, but no: the vast majority of players freeze right around the exorcism table and wait for their demise. When I first witnessed this, I was a bit baffled. But when it’s happened to such a large number of people, it obviously means it’s a bad design and not simply user error.

So, what’s the solution? We’ve been thinking about this for a good while, and here’s what we got:

EXORCISM BOSS FIGHTS
Well, not really. You still won’t be able to fight back against spirits, and you still won’t get a gun. But it appeared that giving the players an objective during the exorcism was crucial. We decided to give each spirit type a unique objective to fulfill during a successful exorcism.

But how to communicate what to do to the players? The game has an extremely minimal UI, and we definitely didn’t want to add text instructions on screen as if it was a WarioWare minigame. Another solution was adding it to the tutorial, but…

  1. That means adding four whole parts (for the four spirits), and even more in the future! That’d make for a super long and bloated tutorial.
  2. People already do not read the tutorial in its entirety. From what I’ve seen, it seems most people mentally skip every other line of text. Sometimes, they even invent things they believe they’ve read in the tutorial! It’s kind of impressive, but I, too, have a very short attention span, so I get it.
In conclusion, it’s best to keep tutorials short and to the point.

So, in the end, we decided to let players trust their instinct, and not give any text instruction. Will that work out? Well, we’ll see. Maybe it’s a big mistake, and we’ll have to change everything again. But it’s an interesting experiment!

THE SHUSHER’S REWORKED EXORCISM PHASE
The shusher is the very first spirit we designed. She’s gone through the most reworks, so it’s only natural she gets to have the first brand new exorcism phase.

We started brainstorming, and had lots of ideas, but all of them felt a bit unnatural; as if we were suddenly adding a Zelda-like puzzle in the middle of an otherwise immersion-oriented horror game. We knew that even though lore isn’t central to this game, this exorcism phase had to be well integrated in the ingame world so as not to break immersion.

We ended up giving the shusher a lantern that only lights up during the exorcism, letting her patrol around looking for prey. When the lantern lights up, as the shusher is weakened by the exorcism, the souls of her victims escape and scatter in the house. Maybe they’d be willing to help you? That’s for you to find out.

The shusher has a lot of unique features, but her most memorable one is right in the name: she can mute players to stop them from talking with each other. It does not, however, stop them from communicating: I’ve seen players “talk” when muted by flashing their torches quickly, jumping around, shaking their head…

Because of this, we decided the shusher’s exorcism phase also had to have a focus on communication.

So, let’s sum this up… we’ve got a patrolling spirit, potentially helpful escaped souls, and a mission to fulfill that’ll put your communication to the test. Sounds like a good time!



The new shusher exorcism phase will be available very soon on the beta (v1.4.0). Your feedback will be very helpful to know whether all of this is too cryptic - or just cryptic enough - and what we should adjust. Other spirits will also get their own exorcism makeover later on.
