Vic (VR Designs) is hard at work on completing the upcoming Republica DLC for Shadow Empire, an expansion that places politics at the heart of the experience. This series of articles aims to explore each of the 9 political systems that will be playable with Republica DLC.
The eight entry in the series is: "Tyranny".
Autocratic Supreme Leaders are seen as an example to emulate at a lower scale by their henchmen, what could go wrong?
A pompous figure adorned in fancy clothing and gemstone jewelry, with a massive governor's chain around his thick neck, stood in front of the main view window. "Damn, damn," he mumbled. His face was as red as a tomato, twisted in fury. "Goddamn, what are those plebeian peons doing in front of our beautiful offices?" ask-shouted Governor Zoomray, known to his people as “the Gov.”
His security officers and police sergeants were blocking the raucous rabble outside from entering the administrative buildings. One of the sergeants reported to the Gov, “They are from the Southern District, and they want their children back.”
“Children?” inquired the Gov, “Which damned children?”
“Yes sir, remember the student protests a few weeks ago? The FEM? The Freedom & Equality Movement they called themselves. About two hundred or so. We took the whole bunch off the streets.”
Zoomray seemed to deflate a bit. “Yes, I remember,” he said, “didn’t I… ehm… personally participate in the… ehm… interrogations?” The sergeant hesitated, visibly uncomfortable, and received an elbow in the ribs from the senior officer standing next to him. The Gov fixed his gaze on the senior officer and snapped, “Holy frack, answer me!”
“Yes sir,” said the senior officer. “For crying out loud,” the Gov hissed, “just disperse them, will you… open fire, whatever! Make them disappear! And do it now!”
The senior officer quickly whispered orders to the police sergeants, and three of them trotted towards their squads at the gates. “Jeesh,” said the Gov to the embarrassed senior officer, “why do I have to do everything myself around here?”
Outside, the shouted orders of the sergeants could be heard as police squads tightened their lines, preparing for offensive operations. The Gov lit a cigar.
“I thought you might have wanted to talk to them first,” the senior officer replied. During this exchange, the junior officers had started inspecting the laces of their boots. The Gov put his hands on his hips and retorted, “Talk? What would you have me say? Your children are gone? I tortured them, killed some of them accidentally, and then dropped the ones still alive in the deep desert?”
He paused, took a deep drag from his cigar, and blew out a large cloud of smoke. “No… better just chase them off. You know that… you all know that!”
Outside, police squads were now battering the demonstrators, driving a wedge through their midst. Two armored cars rolled onto the pavement. The cries and occasional gunshots were muffled but audible through the thick plexiglass view window.
The Gov looked once more at the officers surrounding him. He sneered at them and grumbled, “Get this done, and I’ll see you all in two hours for the daily staff meeting. Now, where is my damned secretary?” He turned his back on the officers and marched off, without goodbyes, towards his offices in the heart of the compound.
The officers remained silent, exchanging uneasy glances with each other. The senior officer cleared his throat. “This is starting to become awkward,” he said. The junior officers nodded. “Recruitment is not going well anymore,” the senior officer continued. “I also heard from the head Apparatchik over at the civilian side that they’re having similar problems keeping the production lines staffed.”
Benjamin, the youngest officer, asked naively, “How so, sir?”
The senior officer sighed. “Benjamin, why did you sign up for the officer academy?”
“To serve the emperor! To protect my family’s estates from revolutionary rabble like the ones outside, sir!” Benjamin replied promptly.
“Yes, yes…” sighed the senior officer. “That’s exactly why you signed up. Now… tell me… why would that poor rabble over there sign up?”
Tyrant Gov is fed up with complaints
Autocracy is the absence of checks and balances and the rule of one person… the Autocrat to be precise.
In theory this is a political system that could provide justice and wealth to its citizens, as much as any other system could. However there is a complete absence of checks and balances in an autocracy. The autocrat cannot deal with everything so his underlings will take care of many aspects of daily national and zone management.
When Virtus drops the Leaders forget that the government should be obeyed out of love for the Nation. They’ll start taking the easy road and will settle for obedience out of Fear. Commanding love is hard, installing Fear is easy. Some personalities will be more prone to this kind of thinking, than others, but it is tempting for all… Why not? Nobody is there to stop them.
The measures taken by the underlings of the Autocrat will become harsher and harsher. Eventually harsh beyond reason and the Leaders on the Politburo and on important positions will start to behave more and more like Tyrants. At some point this will make the Autocracy devolve into a Tyranny.
Now… A Tyranny is a nasty place to live in and it will breed more and more little Tyrants, even Sadists, among your Leaders. They’ll keep control for you, sure they will, but they will run their part of your empire as their own little empire. They’ll become egocentric and very brutal. This comes at a steep price in excessive Happiness and Loyalty loss, Fear and loss of life among your Populace.
A Tyranny with plenty of abuse can seed the seeds of a popular uprising or a palace revolution. In the story above we see both options starting to materialize. The lower ranks of the leadership are starting to realize that the nation is suffering for the personal gratification of the “Gov”, while the Populace is out of the street, probably starting to support rebels as well.
It is possible to steer these little Tyrants, like the “Gov” back on the path of righteousness but to do so Virtus has to be increased. This requires some very serious diversions such as launching a crusade on a neighbouring nation. Nothing like an exterior enemy to reduce interior problems, right?
There is also the radical option of allowing Fanatics to thrive and spread a new gospel. These Fanatics don’t care about themselves, only about the Nation and its glorious supreme Autocrat (you). They’ll stamp out any Tyrants and Sadists, they’ll return Virtus and turn the Supreme Leader into a God. This will stop any unnecessary loss of life among the Populace. However be warned that the Fanatics will eventually tend to stamp out anybody that doesn’t share their level of zeal. And their zeal will go further and further. Opting for a Fanatical Autocracy is a dangerous gamble of the dice.

I wanted to share more about some of the new companions in the full version, one of which I am thinking to add to the demo.
These changes make progression a lot easier and allow you to ascend quicker on your first playthrough.
This word pun was inspired when I was chatting with one of the first few people to try Siegeturtle!
I thought it was cool to have such an animal name and so it was added to the game!

The goat allows you to enhance stats much earlier than before, by reducing the stats required to enhance them.
For example, instead of 200 STR, you can reduce this to 100 STR with the goat. One cannot go below 50% of the original requirements, but at higher levels, a 50% reduction results in several more enhancements being possible, which amplifies stats growth in the late game.
I wanted to add a duck to the game too, similar to Havendock's Duck on a duck on a duck:

I ultimately came up with a skill for reducing enhancement prices. I came up with a story for the duck and its personality and came up with Professor Duck and his skill, Quackonomics, which fit the flavourful style of the game.
After a semester at the prestigious School of Quackonomics, this duck mastered the art of pinching pennies. Now he's on the run for scamming his students of bread.
The duck unlocks a skill that reduces the cost of enhancements by a percentage amount exponentially - similar to the Goldfish, but for enhancements. Apparently, it is currently rated as an S-tier skill by Fortas, one of the most experienced players in the game, alongside the Goldfish, Kingfisher and Bee companions.
Lastly, I want to share a sneak peek of a new biome that will be added to celebrate Halloween!

I wish everyone a happy weekend! TGIF~

Attention, Airmen!
The world’s gone red again. The skies over the wasteland burn like open wounds, and the dead keep coming — louder, faster, hungrier. HQ just authorized a new Prototype Weapon, the LAU-131 CCD “CASCADE”.
Each rocket from the CASCADE doesn’t stop at impact. It detonates, then erupts twice more in quick succession, with roughly a 0.5-second rhythm between each blast. Every explosion deals 100% damage within a 2.85 radius and freezes targets for 0.2 seconds, locking them in place before the next wave hits. After every two detonations, the weapon rolls a 70% chance to trigger two more explosions — and if that roll fails, the chain ends. The result is a weapon that can spiral into chaos when fortune’s on your side.
Built with infinite ammo and upgraded VFX, the CASCADE is made for relentless crowd control and area denial. When refined, it becomes even deadlier — reload time shortens, damage increases, wider spread, and the battery expands. At full refinement, the re-explode chance rises by 18%, turning lucky bursts into full-scale infernos.
Drop it into dense zones, time your shots, and watch a single rocket turn an entire approach into a burning field.

As chosen by the Update Poll, the first part of the Magic NECROMANCY Update is complete! It's a special update for HALLOWEEN, and it features new, complex effects that are sure to spook you this October! It also includes a limited-time class to try them out immediately: NECROMANCER! Other than that, it also features several fixes and improvements, specially to magic and its creation and effects.
CHANGELOG
New magical Effects for Spells, Enchantments and more:
Raise Dead! It effectively transforms dead characters into their undead counterparts permanently, and they'll help you in battle until they die again after the duration expires
Corpse Explosion! It explodes dead bodies by dropping all its items and equipment, plus whatever would be looted from the corpse like meat and bones, and shoots it outward, possibly dealing massive physics damage and blocking paths
New special class: Necromancer! Jump straight in to try the new Necromantic magical Effects, available for a limited time only!
Improved Spell Creation:
The interface now includes a preview window describing what the spell you'll create will be like, not counting your own Magic Power and Cast Speed
Negative Effects on Self are no longer counted to reduce the effectiveness of multiple Effects (they still double all the others, but no longer may produce a Spell of the same effectiveness but with a downside)
Better described the effects of Projectiles on the Spell's Intensity
Better Gamepad scrolling for the menu
Fixed several bugs and oddities related to Spell Creation
Orb Stands (to create Spells) are now made with Crystal, instead of Gold, to make them less difficult to construct. Their visuals have been updated to account for this

The Flight and Levitate Effects now boost your flight speed based on their Intensity
Flying (not levitating) is now twice as fast

Dead Zombies are now named Corpses
You can now hold-interact to make mounted party members dismount
Burned logs now only give 1 coal instead of 4, to avoid cheap money exploits
Limited the scaling of limbs on bodies based on attributes to its normal maximum (50), to avoid models breaking when buffed to extreme values
Made it so bosses cannot hear you if you're outside their arena when they're inside
Added more safeguards to Transforming characters with other Effects already active
Better code to relocate characters that are taken too far away from their original chunk to a closer, spawned chunk

Fixed several bugs that rarely made rescuees not be generated, or the quest not be acceptable
Fixed a bug that caused the list of items for the Steal Service to generate invalid coins
Fixed a bug that made Glowshrooms not properly set their color using the new system for Light Effects
Fixed all the cases of mismatching between location and terrain positions in the world and map for all World sizes, and removed non-integer values for the size of Worlds

Fixed a minor bug when throwing crates
Fixed several warnings and errors with spell projectiles that start at 0 size and could collide immediately
Fixed a bug that could cause Buffed or Debuffed beasts and giants to duplicate their models
Fixed a bug that made collisions between bodies and items not work
Other misc fixes and improvements
Some of the content introduced in updates won't show up in your game world, or at least won't be readily available, if it was generated before the update. They should not corrupt world files, but if they do, please report it!
Thank you for your suggestions and bug reports! Please let me know what you think of this update and if you ran into any issues.

We've updated Astro Pig to include the security fixes released by Unity addressing CVE-2025-59489, classified as high severity.
This vulnerability could allow local code execution or unauthorized access to information on systems running older Unity versions, depending on the operating system. So far, there’s been no evidence of exploitation or impact on users or customers, but as a precaution, we chose to protect our players proactively.
🔧 What we did:
Updated the engine to Unity 2021.3.56f2 (secure patch).
Rebuilt and redeployed the game to remove any potential risk.
Since we reopened the project, we also took the opportunity to apply a few small fixes (text errors in credits, misplaced components), without any gameplay or content changes.
This update ensures full compliance with Unity’s official recommendations and keeps the game’s runtime environment secure and stable.
For more technical details, see Unity’s official security advisory:

Dear Players,
Due to an error in our version update, some players encountered a bug causing the game to freeze during the evidence collection phase. We have immediately rolled back the version. You can now update to resume normal gameplay. We sincerely apologize for the unpleasant experience this has caused. We will learn from this incident, refine our update process, and conduct more thorough testing before future releases. Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience.
Hey peeps!
We’ve released Update 1.3.2, focused on improving stability and addressing several critical multiplayer issues. While we believe we improved on stability with this patch, some fixes may only be partial, and we’re continuing to monitor them closely.
Fixed an issue where the client could spawn inside a piece of furniture at the start of a session, resulting in a black screen.
Fixed a bug occurring when two Meta Quest 3 players used colocated play in the same physical room; the second player would see a completely black screen while audio played normally.
Fixed a critical black-screen issue during cross-platform co-op sessions.
Potential fix: addressed a case where, at the end of a level, players could be stuck on a black screen instead of reaching the end-of-run screen. We’re still investigating the variant of this issue that happens specifically when players are caught by the police on the final day.
We’re actively working to bring stability, more improvements, and additional fixes are on the way.
Thank you for your continuous support! 🐔
