Factions are the cornerstone of most successful RTS games, think of StarCraft and how synonymous the Zerg, Protoss and Terran factions resonate for most people! This is why itâs of crucial importance for us to determine the design choices behind going with the Dwarves as our first exciting faction!
Meet the Dwarves: Lore, Strengths and Playstyle
With that fancy intro out of the way, letâs get into the thick of it and explore our first faction: The Dwarves. Mountain dwelling folk with a deep proficiency for metallurgy, in tune with the land and gifted engineers!
Dwarven Lore đ
To understand the lore of the faction, one must ponder the origins of the very world of Apoceus itself. When the birth of creation dawned, the goddess Artisia, the firstborn of the gods, traveled the void harvesting energy resonances until enough had been collected to birth the sun. Together with Milea, Triton & Melagor, subsequent gods, an alliance was formed. They went about forging the world we know as Apoceus. Itâs Melagor who wrought the mountains from the land, responsible for the towering peaks where Dwarves feel so at home.
The god Melagor and his ties to dwarvenkind are deeply interwoven to the drives, ambitions and religious practices of dwarven folk. From humble miners uttering a prayer of devotion to Melagor prior to descending into the tunnels, to the entire race being shaped in his likeness. Religious fervour amongst dwarves is unrivalled in Apoceus so donât go slandering Melagor at the local tavern or youâll likely be in with a chance for a brawl.
On top of the overarching narratives of the Gods having an influence on the world, each generalâs ascent to their current position within dwarven society is explored. There are currently a total of 3 Generals you can choose to play with in Apoceus. The noble engineer Hogwaldâs story is one of bittersweet impact. Being a skilled tinkerer, and overcoming adversity whilst providing and looking out for one of his siblings (think Frodo & Sam, albeit slightly taller). A really cool redemption story and one with an epic artifact to boot!
Dwarven Strengths âď¸
As one can imagine, when thinking of a dwarf, you usually picture a stubby, somewhat angry person with a chip on their shoulder and a disdain of the elves. And definitely a dain for mead, stouts and other alcoholic beverages. This is a rather ignorant and short sighted assessment of course, as there is much more to these mountain denizens!
Dwarves are renowned as the finest engineers in the world of Apoceus, helping to bring to life magnificent inventions that profoundly alter the battlefield. Whether these be workshops where bellows run hot and battlefield innovations can be researched, or mighty war machines that have earth shattering consequences for their enemies - a dwarven engineer is at the forefront of any effective battlefield strategy.
Without mineral resources and raw iron and wood to fuel the forges, none of this would be possible. Dwarves are born with a pickaxe in hand, so is said. This embellished view has some believability when you see a dwarven miner in action - most have been trained from a young age to effectively locate veins of ore and extract the materials in a most effective fashion. From prolonged exposure in the mines, some have even developed a keen sense of sight which results in something akin to night vision!
Dwarven Playstyle đąď¸
Ah, but now letâs get into the meat & bones of how dwarves actually come to conquer the battlefield. What can be expected of their playstyle - is it more slow and strategic or can you count on lightning tactics to overwhelm your opponents? How does a dwarven army look in the endgame!
In all, it can be said that playing with the Dwarves in Apoceus is a somewhat balanced gameplay style. Some players will find more success with taking a slower, methodical armed build up and come to the battle with some impressive war machines at the helm, looking to overwhelm by numbers and sheer firepower. There is merit to this.
Other players may wish to develop a lightning attack force of mounted cavalry, and, maybe, some fast transport means to get some melee warriors into an enemy stronghold in a more practical way! Whatever this could be, we couldnât possibly say at this stage. But in all, there is certainly a variety of playstyles for the dwarves for the discerning RTS addict. We look forward to seeing what strategies youâll employ.
Boar Rider unit is able to be quickly deployed to tactically change the battlefield
The endgame is a fascinating aspect for our Dwarven heroes, with each of the generals bringing something different to the table that can turn the tide of even the most unfavourable odds. These goliath units, able to be summoned forth by each general, are an amazing mechanic that players can take advantage of. For example, the warhammer wielding general Xeth is able to summon forth something so unimaginably huge, that it might have the potential to quickly devastate an unprepared force up against it. Hogwald, on the other hand, coming from an engineering background, might have a super cool war machine in store to unleash against the enemy faction. These each have a unique niche impact on the battlefield so we look forward to seeing the uses of these massive units and how they alter the landscape (sometimes literally!)
Whatâs Next After the Dwarves? Delving Into the Challenges of A New Faction
For an RTS to thrive, the factions must have some measure of symbiosis with one another. This is to say that they come calibrated so that neither has a massive advantage from the get go - itâs tough to reconcile this with ensuring each new faction brings with it something new to the table. Be it the goliath units, cool lore, unique buildings or abilities - we strive to deliver some factions that broaden the array of tactics at our playersâ disposal!
Faction Diversity âťď¸
Balancing a new faction has its fair share of challenges. Some key considerations for us remain at the forefront of decision making when introducing a new faction - how will it impact players? And further, how does it govern strategy and replayability?
If Dwarven base units tend to be speedy but less hefty in offensive capability, do we seek to play this off by balancing base units of a new faction to have more damage at the cost of speed? These are really important design choices and we donât always get it right at the outset. Weâre certainly not going to introduce a laser trooper to the new faction thatâs able to annihilate all stubborn dwarves outright by sheer firepower (Looking at you Command and Conquer!).
Knowing how deeply these choices affect our players, we emphasize a rigorous QA protocol to verify these tweaks so that we donât have massive handicaps at the outset of a new faction. Weâre aware of the pitfalls, but we see glory on the horizon! Where having 1 faction present already has a multitude of strategies at your fingertips, expanding to 2 factions amplifies the strategic toolbelt possibilities for our player base.
Weâve touched on the fact that Dwarves are at the pinnacle of engineering capability, able to craft impressive siege engines and war machines that can decisively oust even the strongest defenses of an enemy base. When it comes to faction design, we sought to create a compelling counterpoint to such a strategy (should the player wish to employ it). Whilst the exact components of a new faction must be stowed away for the moment, and only whispered of in hushed tones amongst the hallowed halls of the devs, we can reveal if a little morsel now..
The new faction, comparatively to the technological affinity of dwarvenkind, might be more in tune with the beasts that roam the land in Apoceus and have the tendency to have a more wild and warlike flair. With a more nature-inclined theme in place, this seems like a natural (sorry) counterpoint to dwarven machinations. Taking the goliath units as a case study, letâs explore what this looks like in practice on the battlefield.
Faction 2âs proclivity and animalistic traits truly come to shine through the giant units at their disposal. The evolution and abilities branch into 4 different possibilities, each able to unleash unbridled havoc on the battlefield when let loose. One possibility is a hulking leviathan, with thick defenses that can withstand a barrage of enemy units, and unleash a modest amount of devastation. Another possibility at your fingertips is to allow a unit to enter a vulnerable state, after meeting certain criteria, and if successfully kept alive during this period of stasis, âevolveâ unto its terrifying advanced forms. These can unleash a vast amount of destruction and might be far more mobile, at the cost of much needed thickness and resilience. These options along with the mega units for the Dwarves lend themselves to numerous replay scenarios and a strategic wealth of options for our players!
Voice of the Players đŁď¸
Whilst our team has got a concrete vision in mind for the forthcoming second faction to enter the fray in Apoceus, we feel player feedback is invaluable to mould their impact upon the battlefield. Through playtests and frank discussions, and polling to get a feel of our player base, weâre able to keep a finger on the pulse of what players feel will make for a compelling experience.
Itâs important for us to get the balance right, so we must tread these waters carefully! We have to be mindful of the massive impact a second faction (and of course further factions) will have on the course of gameplay. That doesnât stop us from being inspired by our wonderful community, whether their input affects our final artistic output, how the lore of the faction is woven into the game, or a multitude of other areas!
Itâs a tricky thing to be able to provide snippets without revealing too many of the core mechanics of a new faction. Thus we are also careful to retain a mammoth portion of that magic that you experience when you toy around with a new faction, new heroes and discover some unique mechanics on the battlefield! That being said, weâre always taking on board feedback, suggestions, and cultivating discussions. The best way to keep track of what weâre doing in Apoceus is to join our discord. Prepare to take a hike in a stunning new Human Fall Flat level!
Youâll want to wrap up tight before setting off on this trek, as the path from the hunting lodge to the mountain summit is a perilous one that passes through icy glacial caverns and a freezing fog that hides many a trap for the unwary.
As you travel along this path youâll have to gingerly explore secret caves and tunnels, traverse broken bridges, grapple with hooks and ziplines, climb up trees and clamber across rocks to reach the exit at the top of the trail.
As well as enjoying these perilous puzzles, be sure to take in Hikeâs natural beauty too. Cascading waterfalls await you on the way to the summit, and winding woodland paths will tempt you to explore every inch of this latest update. Watch the trailer now!
There are now 28 official levels in Human: Fall Flat, hundreds more in the Steam Workshop, and thereâs still more to come! Keep up to date by following us on Twitter/XâŻ@HumanFallFlat, joining ourâŻDiscordâŻserver, and donât forget you can watch the latest trailers on ourâŻYouTube channel too.
- Fixed drag line graphic staying up when dialogues played during interactions - Fixed game window in the menu taking up too much space on 4K screens and drag line doubling in size. Thanks for testing Wanderbots! - Fixed manager mechanism opening while its already open leading to animation "borking up" - More requested console commands (all the resource names, clear, reset) - More progression hints - Probably something else I'm blanking on

Leagues V: Raging Echoes
The wait is almost over! Leagues V: Raging Echoes worlds will go online at 12:00 noon GMT today, Wednesday November 27th!
Weâve made the decision to stagger the worlds coming back online after todayâs game update as a precaution against the increased numbers of players logging in to play Leagues.
While you wait, why not have a read through this blog and start planning your strategy?
If you've kept up with our reveals so far, then you may be familiar with some of this information already â but we still have a few surprises up our sleeves.
First up, letâs take another look at the official Leagues V trailer, created by AmentosOSRS.
To begin your Raging Echoes journey, youâll need to log into an account with active membership. From there, head to one of the worlds marked in green on the World Select page.
At launch, thereâll be 124 Leagues worlds to choose from. Some of them have specific themes, to help players group up more easily. You may also notice that we've converted more worlds this year, including some non-members worlds that you may be accustomed to playing on. Sorry for the inconvenience â but Leagues stops for no-one!
Everything you'll see in these drop downs was shared in our Leagues V Summer Summit blog, so if you don't need the refresher, keep on scrolling!
Overview [expand type=show more] Here's all you need to know about the Leagues game mode:
You start on a completely fresh account, separate from your main account.
Your journey begins in Lumbridge, and until you get some completed Tasks under your belt, you'll be locked to Misthalin and Karamja.
You'll be able to unlock other areas after completing Tasks and accumulating Points - you can only unlock three additional Regions, so make those choices count!
These unlockable areas are the Wilderness, the Fremennik Isles, Asgarnia, Morytania, the Kharidian Desert, Kandarin, Tirannwn, Kourend and Kebos, and our newest area: Varlamore.
The more regions you have available, the more Tasks you'll be able to complete. Tick Tasks off to rack up Points and unlock powerful Relics to switch up your gameplay.
The number of Points provided by the Tasks do not matter, only the number of Tasks.
This game mode is temporary. Youâll have eight weeks to build your power and see just how far you can get!
Some points to note when it comes to the area locking system:
Death's Office, the Player Owned House, Random Events and the Essence Mines will be accessible from all areas.
Slayer Tasks will be limited to creatures found in the areas you have unlocked.
Treasure Trail steps will be limited to the areas you have unlocked.
[/expand]
Rules [expand type=show more] Area-locking is one of the most interesting things about Leagues, so much so that we've decided to make it a core part of Leagues going forward. If youâve played Leagues before youâll be very familiar with this ruleset, but just in case, letâs break it down.
Iron Mode with Accelerated XP Rates
Everyone will play as an Iron character, meaning:
There will be no trading between players.
Everybody will start with a 5x accelerated XP rate.
This multiplier increases further at specific Relic tiers.
Starting Stats
Your fresh Iron character will have the basic stats from Tutorial Island, as well as:
Level 3 Herblore
Level 5 Runecraft
These starting stats will let you access low-level Herblore and Runecraft training methods.
Run Energy
Leagues is all about exploring Gielinor and progressing quickly, so your Run Energy will not deplete in this game mode.
Quest and Diary Unlocks
Some quests or diary tasks that require access to inaccessible areas will be automatically unlocked. Most notably:
Druidic Ritual, to unlock Herblore.
Lost City, to unlock access to Zanaris.
Youâll also get a free Dramen Staff from the League Tutor, which will allow you to access Zanaris.
Tasks
Tasks are a collection of goals and achievements for you to complete during the League, and they could be anything!
Completing Tasks nets you those all-important League Points, which you can use to unlock Relics and other rewards. The more difficult the Task, the more points you'll get.
It's super easy to pick out your next goal, as the Task interface handily sorts all Tasks into tiers ranging from Easy to Master.
Once again, Regions will be unlocked based on how many Tasks you've completed, not the number of points you earn.
Some Tasks will be area specific, but each area has its fair share of challenges - and don't forget those new bosses!
Examples of area-specific Tasks include:
Eat an Onion.
Complete the Easy Varrock Diary.
Defeat Scurrius.
Mine 25 Pure Essence.
Examples of general Tasks, which can be completed in any Region, include:
Bury some bones.
Complete a rooftop Agility Course.
Equip a Maple Shortbow.
Defeat a Guard.
Weâve balanced the areas such that each one has about the same amount of Points (with less than 10-20% variation) so that no matter which areas you choose, you still have plenty of chances to get your hands on the Trophies.
Relics
Leagues is your opportunity to gain power at exponential levels, which means you could end up facing ferocious foes in a fraction of the time it took you in the main game, and some of you may take on quests that you haven't even reached on your main. This is all thanks to Relics!
Relics give you buffs to customise your gameplay, meaning you can really lean into your strategy. Unlocked with League Points, they offer XP boosts, combat buffs, improved luck and more!
As you start your journey, you'll be given your first choice between three Tier 1 Relics. Then it's up to you to complete Tasks and gaining Points to unlock more.
We shared plenty of Relic information in our Teasers and FAQ blog, so check that out for a head start!
League-to-League Rewards
When you earn certain rewards during your Leagues journey, you'll have them in future Leagues, too.
Pets are one such reward. As long as you found your new follower during the League and insured them, your pets will be waiting for you next time a League comes a-knockinâ. If you lose them in any other circumstance, you can reclaim them from the League Tutor. Plus, if you've netted yourself a transmog for your buddy, that'll carry over from League to League, too! Carrying over a pet from a previous League will not complete any pet-specific tasks. Your main game pets will remain where they are, and your Leagues pets will not follow you back to the main game.
Right-click icons are automatically obtained and will show everyone who right-clicks you how well you performed in the previous League, with a unique symbol appropriate to your tier. Nice! [/expand]
What's New?
From new Relics to Combat Masteries and Echo bosses, Leagues V has plenty in store. We shared these in our Leagues V Teasers and FAQs blog, filled with videos and infographics to feast your eyes on. You can also check the FAQ spreadsheet!
Echo Bosses
Leagues V introduced nine fearsome, yet familiar foes. You may think you know how to beat these beasts, but youâre in for a shock â the Echo Bosses have some real surprises in store for you.
Thereâs an Echo Boss in every unlockable region, but not in the two starting zones.
These encounters bring game-changing unique rewards that you might want to consider when planning your region picks. Check out this video from Scritic to find out more about them!
Another huge new feature is Combat Masteries. Complete Combat Mastery Tasks and youâll earn yourself points to spend on style-focused abilities. Each style has six Tiers, and with a maximum of 10 Points available you'll need to carefully decide where to spend them. As with other Leagues choices, there's no backsies! Check out the video or infographic below for more information.
The newest League also brings some Quality of Life changes:
Re-enabled the Blast Furnace shop.
Removed the blacklist for locations where Bankersâ Note could not be used.
Marks of Grace, Hallowed Marks, Agility vouchers and Stardust now benefit from the minigame multiplier.
Tripled the quantity of Nihil Shard drops.
Points are only transferred over to your main save every 500 Points accrued, to reduce server load. If you notice a discrepancy in Points between your main and League profile, this is why!
Disabled the ability to purchase XP in Pest Control and Soul Wars. A flat 2x combat XP multiplier has been added as a Relic passive to compensate.
The hope here is that nobody will feel confined to minigames, when they could be out exploring all the League has to offer.
The increased combat power plus another 2x XP rates (so this is 32x combat XP at max rates) will mean you can train your stats very quickly.
Rocks, trees, respawnable items, and main-world NPCs will respawn faster than in the main game.
Production Master now works with:
Making darts and arrows by using feathers on them. This is capped at making up to 10x at a time.
Fletching Achey Logs.
Making pizza and pies.
Removed the auto-completed Chompy Tasks for interacting with the Ogre Bow.
Hunter Rumours will be area locked, like Slayer Tasks and Mahogany Homes.
Players will no longer start at level 10 Agility, as Draynor is now a level 1 Agility course.
Added instances for Cerberus, Sarachnis, and the Thermonuclear Smoke Devil.
Awakener's Orbs, Twisted Kits, And ToB:HM Kits now benefit from the drop rate multiplier.
You can access the tormented demon area without completing While Guthix Sleeps.
Scythe of Vitur can be recharged by using Blood Runes on it, and does not require Vials of Blood.
Players can now purchase a Max Cape from the Sage once they are max level.
Cosmetic unlocks based on your previous Leagues rank are now added to your Bank rather than your Inventory on login.
Pet transmogs are now carried over to subsequent Leagues.
Duke won't clear potions or herbs after a kill.
Equilibrium now displays the amount of XP it has granted.
Swapped the minigame boosting effect at Guardians of the Rift to boost your points earned in the minigame, rather than the number of pearls obtained.
Area Unlocks
We know youâve been clamouring to unlock a fourth area, but we believe this would diminish what makes the area unlock system so exciting to build around.
Instead, weâve made some changes to address your biggest pain points:
Items dropped from bosses that require more than one region to become useable now drop as the finished component.
This includes the Venator Vestige and the Hydra Claw.
Masori Armour and Ward of Elidinis will not drop as finished items, as they are usable when dropped.
All players will have Desert Treasure II, without pre-requisites, unlocked by default to enable access to the Desert Treasure II bosses without requiring the Desert.
Whenever you would obtain a Twisted Bow, Scythe of Vitur, or Tumeken's Shadow, you will instead receive the "Megarare Voucher", which can be handed in to the Sage for the weapon of your choice.
If one player gets a purple in Hard Mode ToB or High invocation ToA (500+), then all the players in the raid will receive a purple too.
To compensate for the increase in purples, weâve decreased the drop rates for these modes specifically from 3x to 2x. This means youâll get less purples per hour solo, but greatly increased purples per hour with friends.
CoX remains untouched from last League.
Leagues Firsts
As always there are a number of Leagues firsts up for grabs, for those daring enough to take on this additional challenge.
This year weâre tracking the following achievements:
Complete Inferno
Unlock a Tier 8 Relic
Unlock a 5th Region
Achieve a level 99
Achieve total level 2277
Complete Tombs of Amascut(solo)
Complete Theatre of Blood (solo)
Complete Chambers of Xeric (solo)
Finish a Combat Mastery Path
Defeat an Echo Boss

Plus, we have a range of new rewards to get your mitts on, including ornament kits, animations and some new decor for your POH. Check them all out in the dedicated Rewards blog. Youâll also be able to get your hands on a series of Trophies, depending on where you place in the final ranking.
Note: Rewards will be released after the League ends.
Leagues Membership Package
To take part in Leagues, you need to use an account with an active membership. Following your feedback from last year, we know that some of you want access to a Membership package that will last you the span of the League â the last thing you should be worrying about is how much time is left on your account!
