This week at Mutant, let’s get you caught up on how our summer has been: Busy and hot. We’ve had multiple moves for I think everyone on the team this year, so it’s been a little stop and go.
But! We’re feeling inspired. We all took the time this week to watch Sea Beast on Netflix and it was a fun monster adventure. Always exciting when we get a new kaiju movie. I was actually already feeling spoiled for how many movies this last year have ended with a surprise "kaiju" fight, Turning Red being the most surprising.
Anyways, we each came away from Sea Beast with different ideas for our little project so we had a few meetings this week about it. If you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend it.
THE BIG ONE
Here’s a few images of our kaiju in progress. He’s needed a lot of special attention and detailing to be able to do the boss fight we’ve got cooking, so Sarah is updating his model and adjusting some details.
KAIJU USED TAIL WHIP, IT’S SUPER EFFECTIVE!
Oh, did I mention a boss fight? Guess I should show you something about that then, eh? How about a quick tease from some of our earlier work on him. We’re testing his moves with a test-dummy kaiju at the moment because our big boy is still in progress. Zach has been nailing the scale and movement so I'm stoked to show you more in the coming weeks.
This is just one of his attacks we’re testing and implementing: a massive tail slam! I would recommend: dodging.
The monster fight is also the culmination of our mechanics so we are finalizing a lot of tools (which I'll show you more of next week) and polishing our movement even more.
We've got plenty more to showcase with this behemoth and we're planning on having a test fight for him soon... I'm not saying you should join our Discord in case there's a playtest buuuuuuut... (you should join our Discord anyways!)

Release party! Come play with people from all over who want to play some Soccer.. but.. different!
I remember watching sports as a kid and wondering if they have a meta like video games do- new features, balance changes, and maps? Imagine my heartbreak when I found out we've been playing roughly the same Soccer for like 200 years. In this game, all players are given cards while playing that they can use to change the rules of the game and change things up. "Randomize the map, change the ball, strap ice cubes to everyone's feet- LAUNCH EVERYONE WITH ROCKETS- ADD 10 MORE BALLS- RANDOMLY TELEPORT EVERYONE- FINALLY SOME GOOD SPORTS!" I cried to my parents as I ran up to my room at the ripe age of just 10. I hugged my stuffed dinosaur. Dino understands me. He would play my game. Maybe he can be the main character. Someday.
As promised in a few newsletters back, it’s time for a deep dive into Space Boat’s inspiration and lore! So keep reading for all our juicy secrets and a new graphic!!
Why would space travel be treated any differently than anything else humanity has been involved with? The Space Boat universe was developed in the 80s and 90s, during a time when the thirst for Sci-Fi was at an all-time high. Franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars coloured the popular landscape, and though both have different ways of looking at humanity’s possible future, Space Boat takes a more cynical and satirical view of the future: If humanity had developed an easy method for interstellar space travel, it would capitalize and trivialize it, converting the miracle of space travel into commercial transportation. Underneath the colorful, fun, and goofy exterior, there’s the beating heart of a true Sci-Fi.
While updating the I.G.C.L. Princess Andromeda, much care was taken to answer underlying technology that exists in this whacky universe. We came up with some ideas that we think Isaac Asimov would be proud of like: Artificial atmosphere. In most Sci-Fi shows, oxygen is treated simply like it is on current day space stations while gravity is thrown in like “future space magic”. Sometimes you get Babylon 5 levels of ingenuity where they spin a ship to create artificial gravity while sometimes you get the Wall-E treatment where people are somehow thrown around a ship depending on the ship’s orientation. Seeing that we wanted to allow people to vacation on the exterior of the ship while in space, we wondered if we could have a legitimate scientific approach to having an oxygen environment without being in an airtight structure. It turns out the answer was gravity all along. After all, the earth does not have a dome and somehow maintains it’s atmosphere from going into space. In the Space Boat universe, you can not only take a stroll on the outside of the ship while star gazing with the naked eye, but you can also swim in outdoor pools and take a ride in water parks.
This month we are very excited about Steam Survival Fest (August 1 - August 8). It will be the first festival/event to which Hired 2 Die is exposed. We will start recruiting players for our closed Alpha. Stay tuned! Join our Discord Channel if you want a free key to play our closed Alpha!
Because of the Survival Fest, we are improving the quality of our store. Most of the visuals were placeholders or needed to be changed. Also, we will upload a new trailer, showing better the experience of playing Hired 2 Die with a friend, which required us to upgrade a lot of stuff and improve the assets.
Help us boost our visibility during the event, wishlist our game:
