STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

With the recent news of a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we thought it'd be fun to return to this look behind the curtains of BioWare's groundbreaking original. This piece was originally published in December 2017.

There are spoilers ahead for Knights of the Old Republic.

How do you follow a game like Knights of the Old Republic, the most famous original Star Wars tale a video game has ever told? Forget about Obsidian's sequel for a moment and imagine it was BioWare staring at a piece of paper wondering how to follow a twist like Revan's. Because once upon a time BioWare was - and it came up with an idea.

STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

It doesn't sound like EA is involved in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake.

This week, during Sony's PlayStation Showcase event, Aspyr's long-rumoured KOTOR remake was finally confirmed as coming to PC and PlayStation 5 as a console launch exclusive.

Aspyr - the Texas-based studio that has collaborated with Lucasfilm on various projects for over a decade, including ports of the original Knights of the Old Republic to iPhone and iPad - was recently gobbled up by Embracer Group, the ever-growing company that also owns Borderlands maker Gearbox.

STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™

The unannounced Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake will be developed by renowned port studio Aspyr.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier revealed the detail while a guest on the MinnMax podcast. It follows earlier whispers of a KOTOR remake which have swirled for some time, and which also suggested the project wasn't being handled internally by EA or original studio BioWare.

Eurogamer has separately heard of Aspyr's involvement, and that while the developer is known for often releasing straight ports, work is currently underway to make the project more of a remake instead.

STAR WARS™ Republic Commando™

Well-received 2005 Star Wars game Republic Commando looks set for a new launch on Nintendo Switch.

A tactical first-person shooter, Republic Commando was originally released on PC and the OG Xbox. Set during the Clone Wars, it lets you play as a clone trooper and command the rest of your squad alongside you. Here's how it looked back in the day:

Overnight, Switch eShop dataminer NWPlayer123 noticed the game had been added to Nintendo store servers ready for release. Its developer is listed as Aspyr, which has previously handled ports for various other Star Wars games such as Episode 1 Racer.

STAR WARS™ Battlefront II (Classic, 2005)

We've already seen some fairly creepy content based on Fall Guys (I'm still trying to forget the bean anatomy shared by the official Twitter account), and now there's even more. This time it takes the form of some suspiciously long legs, and some familiar crewmates are joining in on the action, as someone's made a Star Wars Battlefront 2 PC mod combining both Among Us and Fall Guys.

Made by TigerVenom22 and ToastedShoes, the mod replaces all original trilogy-era infantry with Fall Guys characters on the light side, and Among Us characters on the dark. Makes sense given a selection of the crewmates are basically eldritch horrors. They're capable of wielding lightsabers or using Force lightning (on the dark side at least), while the Fall Guys beans come with a range of costumes - one of which has Rowan Atkinson's face. I think there might be a joke there somewhere. My personal favourite is the extremely tall General Grievous Among Us crewmate with four floating lightsabers.

Why? I hear you ask. It's a good question - and one I can't entirely answer - but it seems the mod was commissioned by ToastedShoes, who made a video showcasing it on his YouTube channel about a month ago (a heads-up that there's some sponsored content in the footage). It seems to have been inspired by the sudden rise of Among Us which many attributed to the popularity of Fall Guys over the summer, and a perceived rivalry between the two party games. Although they seem to get along just fine on Twitter.

BioShock™

I love a good plot twist. I will always remember the moment in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic when I found out who my character really was, and always remember the moment in BioShock when I found out who the real baddie was. These things make a game, they sear it into our memories.

But once you know the secret what then? The game is done more or less. You might get a bit of mileage from playing again and spotting the clues, but there are no real surprises left to be had, not unless you're Nier Automata but let's not go there now.
But what if a story could change? What if it was fundamentally different a second time around?

I got to thinking about this recently after talking to a man called Ray Winninger, the head of Dungeons & Dragons, tabletop side. He's only recently been appointed that position after spending many years away from Wizards of the Coast, but he's been involved with and playing D&D most of his life. He professionally wrote campaigns as a teenager and even played with the game's creators, Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax. Dungeons & Dragons is in his bones.

Five of the Best is a weekly series about the small details we rush past when we're playing but which shape a game in our memory for years to come. STAR WARS™ Battlefront II (Classic, 2005)

Hang out here long enough and you've probably noticed that the Eurogamer lot are partial to a good pun under their headlines. I'm assuming, then, there's some appreciation for the play on words that is hosting Star Wars Day on May the 4th.

Star Wars and video games share a rich history, so it's no surprise to see various retailers attempt to capitalise on the festivities with their own Star Wars day deals. You can find offers on the old (Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Knight) and the new (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Battlefront 2), plus much more in between.

I've gathered the best of the bunch below for you to peruse. You can also head to Jelly Deals where we've got a roundup of all the other Star Wars day deals, featuring Lego, box sets, collectables, merch and more.

STAR WARS™ Battlefront II (Classic, 2005)

UPDATE 8pm: Following the appearance of Star Wars Battlefront's online-multiplayer-revealing patch notes on Steam, word has emerged that the update is also now available in the GOG version (as on Steam, it's currently discounted). Better yet, cross-play is supported between both platforms, hopefully boosting the chances of finding an online game.

ORIGINAL STORY 5.55pm: If you've been looking for an excuse to pick up Star Wars Battlefront up again, you know, 16 years after it was released, now's the perfect time; entirely unexpectedly, developer Pandemic Studios' much-loved space shooter just got its online multiplayer mode restored on Steam.

The original Star Wars Battlefront (not to be confused with DICE's 2015 shooter of the same name) released all the way back in 2004 on PS2, Xbox, and PC, giving players the chance to battle their way to victory across a selection of familiar Star Wars locales - fighting from the perspective of either the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Galactic Republic, or the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and utilising multiple classes and vehicles.
