Star Trek Online

The Foundry is one of the neatest feature in Cryptic's MMOs, Star Trek Online and Neverwinter. It allows players to use game assets and tools to create their own scripted quests to share with fellow captains and adventurers. Inside these MMOs, an unlikely community of modders sprang up. Unfortunately, Cryptic has announced that the Foundry will be closing its doors for good next month.

While the Foundry has been kept alive by player imagination, it still requires resources and maintenance from Cryptic, and sadly the developer has decided that it can't give the Foundry the attention it deserves while still creating new features.

Star Trek Online and Neverwinter continue to receive regular, meaningful updates, with the former currently taking advantage of finally running concurrently with a show through the free Age of Discovery expansion. There's clearly plenty of life left in them, then, but they've both been around for a long time, and MMOs don't seem to draw in the sort of crowds they used to, so it looks like some cuts have to be made to keep the new stuff flowing.

I'll miss the Foundry, but I confess I can't remember the last time I used it. It's got nothing to do with the quality of the custom missions, but Star Trek Online, which I still pop back into, has so many missions and activities that I never have any time to look for more. But it was nice to know it was around if I wanted to mix things up.

You could hunt down some story-rich diversions, solving murder mysteries in country mansions outside Neverwinter, or you could just blow off some steam by shooting the crap out of 1,000 terrans. In Neverwinter especially, the Foundry was evocative of the brilliant modding community that sprouted around BioWare's Neverwinter Nights, which had the best modding support of any BioWare game then or since.

Players will receive some rewards for participating in the Foundry. In Star Trek Online, everyone who has played a Foundry mission will get a badge, authors will get a Botany Bay space pet and anyone who created a spotlit mission will earn a Genesis Torpedo ground device. Things are a bit more stingy over in Neverwinter, though. You'll get a title of you've played at least ten missions, while creating at least ten will net you a cape.

The good news is that if, like me, you've not browsed the Foundry for a long time, you still have time to play a whole bunch of missions. The lights will stay on until April 11.

Happy New Year fellow Captains! On behalf of Star Trek Online, I am very proud to announce that our voyage has just reached its 9th Anniversary. Our continuing mission: to explore exciting new and familiar worlds, to create new stories and gameplay, to boldly go where no player has gone before.

Welcome to the celebration!

https://youtu.be/w6A8WaDkoY4

It’s been a wonderful journey. 2018 saw the acclaimed release of Star Trek Online’s 4th major expansion – Victory is Life! It was here Captains explored the Gamma Quadrant and encountered the Hur’q threat alongside our beloved DS9 characters, voiced by the original actors in the largest cast ever assembled for Star Trek Online. For the first time, players created Jem’Hadar Captains, battled heroically in one of our most ambitious Battlezones to date and walked the promenade on our faithfully recreated Deep Space Nine station. We are incredibly proud of Victory is Life and we’re very pleased that so many players enjoyed it.

Alas, time does fly. The back half of the year found us phaser focused on setting the stage for our Discovery-era expansion. While not an expansion in the traditional Star Trek Online-sense, we instead wanted to do something a little different and develop this over multiple releases. Unbelievably, Star Trek: Discovery marks the first time that we’ve operated in lockstep with a live Trek TV show. This affords us many unique opportunities to evolve our plans based on the direction of the show and input from the players.

Enter 2019. Our journey advances deeper into the Star Trek: Discovery universe with the forthcoming launch of Mirror of Discovery. We have many fun surprises planned including a thrilling new story featuring Mary Wiseman as the Terran Empire’s Captain “Killy”, exploration of planet Pahvo, amazing new ships for players to fly, challenging new threats to overcome and a massive expansion of our Endeavors system.

Now is the perfect time for Trek fans everywhere to join us for the voyage ahead. Let’s find out together what’s beyond the second star to the right.

Take us out!

Star Trek Online has been taking advantage of finally running concurrently with the TV show. Last year saw developer Cryptic launch the Age of Discovery expansion, and on the cusp of the MMO’s nine-year anniversary, a new update will continue to delve into the Discovery universe, as well as introducing the ruthless Captain Killy. Check out the teaser above.

Even after some overhauls and the 2016 makeover, STO is pretty creaky. Ground combat is worlds better than it was at launch almost a decade ago, but it’s still shallow and looks a bit naff. The space combat, though? Stellar. It’s real-time with some tactical sensibilities, but the real treat is just designing the ships. Not visually, which remains a bit limited unless you shell out real money, but the components you cram inside them let you make all sorts of different different warships, bristling with phasers and torpedo launchers.

It’s the missions that I’m really enjoying replaying, however, which isn’t something I could say for many MMOs. The writing quality isn’t all that consistent, but the storylines all feel like classic Star Trek fare, even structurally, and they’re bursting with nods to the shows and cameos from Star Trek actors, most recently Discovery’s Mary Wiseman, who plays Ensign Tilly.

Tilly’s Mirror Universe counterpart, Captain Killy, is the star of the Mirror of Discovery update. Evil Tilly and her crew were in the Mirror Universe’s ISS Discovery when it was believed to have been destroyed by Klingons, but it actually hopped over to the regular universe. Players will find her on the planet of Pahvo, where they can meet Captain Killy and stop her from destroying a planet.

I really like the idea of the MMO fleshing out bits from the show like this. We never actually saw the real Captain Killy, since she was presumed dead, so this is the first time we get to meet the character. Trion Worlds’ Defiance did something similar with the show of the same name, though it never really capitalised on the relationship beyond some events loosely linked to things happening on the show and some brief  cameos. It’s still around, though the show was cancelled in 2015.

The update will feature two new episodes, available to all factions, as well as the return of the Omega Molecule Stabilisation event. Collect enough particles and you’ll net yourself a new T6 Vulcan scout ship from Discovery. A new system that offers daily challenges and account-wide performance boosts will also be included, with more details coming before the launch on January 23.

Captains, welcome to Age of Discovery! This is a landmark event for Star Trek Online as it marks the first time that the game has run in parallel with a live Trek television show. We are already experiencing fantastic new synergies collaborating closely with CBS and the show writers. Captains will experience this right away in a reimagined Federation starting experience working alongside Cadet Sylvia Tilly (voiced by Discovery's Mary Wiseman) as players set out on epic, multi-release adventures.

In AoD’s maiden voyage, players will journey to iconic locations from Star Trek: Discovery, exploring the depths of the Dilithium Mines of Corvan II, boarding the new experimental Crossfield class starship, the U.S.S. Glenn, and defending Starbase 1 from a fearsome attack by the Klingon House of D’Ghor. Captains will also come face to face with the vicious J'Ula, matriarch of the House of Mo'Kai and sister of T'Kuvma who will stop at nothing to reunite the Klingon Empire.

This however is just the beginning in Age of Discovery. Multiplayer missions, formerly known as “Queues” have been expanded and rebranded as Task Force Operations (TFO). This change is certainly not in name only. Throughout AoD, we will be introducing exciting new TFOs that advance the narrative, while remastering and recreating others. This kicks off with the all-new TFO, Defense of Starbase 1, followed shortly thereafter by our first Featured Task Force Operation – Battle at the Binary Stars. In this new 3-Week Event, players will have an opportunity to earn exclusive rewards fighting side-by-side with fellow captains in one of the most important battles in Federation history.

Additionally, Task Force Operations introduce a new engagement feature, which offers captains big bonus payouts for supporting other players by joining Random TFOs. This new Random TFO feature further ensures that all captains will easily find groups to experience all the diverse TFO content in the game. Is there is particular TFO that you have never played or have trouble finding groups for? We've got you covered here as well. Select the Task Force Operation that you want to play and it will be quickly filled by other players seeking out the Random TFO bonuses! Stay tuned, as there is much more in the works for this evolving feature.

We’ve also completely overhauled the Mission Journal. Careful handling has gone into this undertaking, ensuring that our very best stories are presented to players early in the leveling experience. Some episodes have or will be undergoing a remastering process while others have become optional. Another big change here is the removal of level requirements. With the exception of certain pivotal episodes (for training and continuity purposes), players will no longer be level gated in the experience. Captains will also notice that many previously gated Task Force Operations are now unlocked while leveling. This gives newer players greater access to play with friends, get a taste of the end game experience and a huge head start on Reputation Marks.

And speaking of Reputations, this system has been expanded in Age of Discovery as well. All current reputations have been raised to Tier 6! There are fantastic rewards to be found here including, improved reputation traits, damage improvements for reputation weaponry, Fleet Ship Modules, vanity materials, account-wide reputation gear discounts and much more.

In short, building this first installment in Age of Discovery and working with Mary Wiseman has been an amazing experience for our development team. Additionally, we want to thank you for all the great feedback and continued support! While we have many more stories and features planned in the coming months, we are thrilled to be launching Age of Discovery: Part 1 next week! Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you in game very soon!

A Discovery expansion is headed at warp speed toward Star Trek Online.

New story arc Age of Discovery marks the first time in Star Trek Online's history that the game will be updated in-line with a currently airing Star Trek series.

Age of Discovery, which is set in the year 2256 during the height of the Klingon War, features Cadet Tilly, who fans of Star Trek Discovery will know well. She's lovable, determined and just a little bit annoying, but key to Discovery's charm.

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the launch of Deep Space Nine, and the team for Star Trek Online couldn’t wait to mark the occasion with our fourth full expansion: Victory is Life.  The only way we could see to top our previous expansions was to not only introduce a brand new player faction in the Jem’Hadar, but also throw in a level cap increase from 60 to 65!

Starting today, Captains in Star Trek Online will have the opportunity to create a brand new captain in their own Jem’Hadar faction.  All Jem’Hadar captains will be as formidable right out of space dock as their namesakes, as they will be leveled up to 60 with a fully equipped ship, a fully geared crew, and a variety of completed Reputations, Specialization trees, and R&D progress.  As a fresh captain you will have all the tools you need at your disposal to dive in and play Star Trek Online right at end game, all 100% for free.

On top of the ability to create a brand new Jem’Hadar captain that starts at end game, we’re delivering the first level cap increase in nearly four years. We have a variety of exciting content available for everyone. We’ll have 7 brand new episodes that will take you through an incredible story full of twists and reveals, a new queue, “Swarm,” that shows the devastating impact of the Hur’q, the all new Gamma Quadrant Sector Space Battlezone that takes the concept of a battlezone and increases the scope to include literally everyone playing in the Quadrant, and the Gamma Task Force Reputation that will give you everything you need to take the fight to the Hur’q.  Players that create their Jem’Hadar captains during the first six weeks of launch will also be able to participate in the new Jem’Hadar recruitment system.  This system provides challenges for captains to complete that will provide bonus personal and account wide rewards.  This collection of fantastic content will put you in the boots of a Jem’Hadar, and give you a true Deep Space Nine experience.

The story that drives Victory is Life dives deep into the history of the Hur’q, the Dominion, and is rich with classic DS9 moments.  To tell such an incredible tale we needed an incredible cast, and we were able to feature nearly the entire main cast of Deep Space Nine. We have Rene Auberjonois returning as Odo, Nana Visitor as Kira Nerys, Alexander Siddig as Dr. Julian Bashir, Andrew Robinson as Elim Garak, Armin Shimerman as Quark, Aron Eisenberg as Nog, Jeffrey Combs as Weyoun and Brunt, J.G. Hertzler as Martok, Chase Masterson as Leeta, Max Grodenchik as Rom, Salome Jens as the Female Changeling, and Bumper Robinson as Dukan’Rex.  All in all, this is the largest cast we’ve ever assembled for an expansion and with a story you have to play to believe.

This is an expansion that the team has been wanting to build since the launch of Star Trek Online, and we’re so proud to be able to deliver it during the 25th Anniversary celebration.

Victory is Life brings intrigue, excitement, and amazing characters into Star Trek Online, and I can’t wait to see everyone in game!

Mission details for Season 12 – Reckoning will be revealed in the new featured episode, “Of Signs and Portents,” which will also feature the game’s first appearance of General Rodek, voiced by actor Tony Todd. The update also unlocks an expansive amount of content for captains to explore, including a new reputation, a new crafting school in the R&D System to create kits and modules, two brand-new space queues (“Gravity Kills” and “The Tzenkethi Front”) and a full space battlezone that has the Alliance pitting itself against the Tzenkethi in a desperate bid to stop the production and deployment of protomatter weapons.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, the crew of Star Trek Online could not be prouder to announce our third expansion - Agents of Yesterday - is now live! Prepare your classic Original Series tunics and dust off your Mark II phasers; you’re about to take an away mission to an amazing adventure in that classic 60’s era. Our expansion is full of amazing features to bring you a complete and classic experience here in Star Trek Online.

First and foremost, players can create brand new captains in the Original Series era and engage in a story that takes them through the 23rd century and beyond. There will be a sweeping mystery to solve, one that ties into the overall story Star Trek Online has been telling for years. For players that choose to keep playing with their existing characters, we have a can’t-miss set of five episodes that will tie up the story arc we’ve been telling for nearly a year.

Next, we have an amazing cast of voice actors joining our captains on their adventure through this episodic content. Walter Koenig will be reprising his role as Chekov, and Chris Doohan will be filling in for his father by playing Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. Chase Masterson will be reprising her role as Admiral Leeta from the Mirror Universe, and Matt Winston will be making his Star Trek Online debut as Agent Daniels - originally seen on Star Trek: Enterprise. Finally, we have Joseph Gatt playing the cyborg crewman 0718, a character from the new Star Trek movies who joins us on our first adventure into that universe.

In addition to the amazing story content and voice actors we have a brand new Temporal Reputation that will grant people not only powers and a new suite of endgame gear but new queue-based content to play. The new Temporal Specialization will let people continue to differentiate their captains at endgame, and provides a full complement of brand new bridge officer powers. We will also be running a new “Temporal Agent Recruit” event for a limited time for any of our new TOS era captains. The recruitment system will provide challenges for players to complete that will provide a reward to that captain, and rewards for any other captains on their account.

This expansion truly captures the feel of the Original Series, and I can’t wait to see everyone in game!

Nearly a year ago, the Alliance began to investigate the possibilities of using time travel as a tool to change the past in order to save the future. With the successful construction and deployment of the Annorax-class Science Dreadnought, the first steps were made into a new future of exploration and conflict mitigation.

Unfortunately, the recent theft of that same ship has potentially planted the seeds of our destruction, and those seeds begin to bear fruit in the episode “Temporal Front”. There will be political intrigue, an enemy plot, and a massive fleet engagement while the past and future of the Alliance hangs in the balance. This Featured Episode will be an escalation point in this budding conflict that you definitely don’t want to miss!

On top of another amazing episode, we have a great collection of features and updates for everyone to enjoy. First and foremost, we have a complete revamp of the Skill System. This revamp will make creating any build you want clearer, simpler, and easier across the board. Everything in the Skill System has been laid out, rethought, continually tested, and iterated on with you on our test shard for nearly two months. I couldn’t be more excited for this change, and I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it.

In addition to the skill revamp we have the brand new Strategist Secondary Specialization, the Romulan Admiralty Campaign, a new and exciting Na’kuhl-themed Red Alert, and last but certainly not least, the ability to slot ship visuals independent from your starship stats.

All in all, this is one of the largest mid-season updates in the history of Star Trek Online, and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying it in game.
