Mutiny!! - Lupiesoft
I understand everyone's feelings lately on Mutiny!! and why we have gone so long without content. That from the looks of it we've abandoned Mutiny!! but we haven't.

After Mutiny!! we immediately began work on Dizzy Hearts, a project we started, and Kickstarted a few years ago, and delayed to create Mutiny!! and some DLC because we needed funds to keep Lupiesoft running.
A lot of the DLC for Mutiny!! and a lot of the art needed for that DLC is done, missing only CGs and a second draft pass over the story.

We have funding, but we are small and very close to the bone, almost every single visual novel developer can attest to that. Things like Patreon only barely keep us above water, and we have very little presence on social media.

These factors mean that Lupiesoft is a really small VN company, and Steam has not been good sales wise lately for most of 2019 for almost everyone. So this meant delaying working on Mutiny!! to finish Dizzy Hearts as soon as possible, which would free us to finish Mutiny!!'s story, and we've also had project delays out of our control lately.

Dizzy Hearts is on track to release this year, and we are working on finishing Mutiny!! DLC.

I don't want to guilt you or make you feel bad or any of that, for just wanting more Mutiny!!. You have to understand it's frustrating for us too because we have a lot of ideas for more Mutiny!!, but because we are so small, we have to prioritize projects over others to keep running.

Over the last several years there's been a growing influx of 'eroge' on Steam—sexually explicit games, many of them visual novels, either Japanese or inspired by Japanese works. These games focus on romancing flirty anime characters, and sometimes contain graphic sexual content as a key part of narrative progression. But their days on the platform may be numbered. In May, several developers and publishers—including Lupiesoft, HunieDev, and MangaGamer—said that Valve informed them their games would be removed from Steam unless sexual content was censored. Less than a day later Valve walked back the notices, issuing an apology to the developers involved for causing confusion, and telling them to disregard the initial emails. Even so, the move sparked outrage in the visual novel community.

Most eroge games on Steam are already heavily censored to fall in line with Valve's community standards. Previously, developers were allowed to include information on their community discussion page explaining how to restore the censored nudity using a patch. Recently, this has also begun to change, with Steam representatives reaching out to the developers of Galaxy Girls and Sunrider Academy to suggest that they remove any information about content restoration patches from their community pages.

Sunrider Academy (Love in Space, 2015)

According to Taosym from Lupiesoft—responsible for Mutiny!!, a visual novel about a pirate captain who romances her nonhuman crew—there was no explanation given as to why Valve threatened them with removal. This was echoed by the director of PR for MangaGamer, John Pickett, who confirmed that they have received no further information about why their game, Kindred Spirits, was reported for violating community guidelines. does suck that the company with the biggest market share in game sales is this reckless with their business decisions.

Taosym, Lupiesoft

"We have yet to receive any further notice or information from Valve since the initial one we reported on in our press release and a follow-up email telling us to disregard it after the news was first covered in the press. According to the disregard notice the product is still under review and may potentially still face removal," Pickett says."Considering we had Kindred Spirits thoroughly reviewed by our Valve representative prior to even trying to get the title hosted on Steam, we expect it to pass and remain on the storefront without edits or censorship. Anything less would mean a true backtrack on previous standards and policies."

Kindred Spirits (Liar-soft/MangaGamer, 2016)

Taosym also expressed confidence in the outcome of Valve's upcoming re-review of Mutiny!!, suggesting that taking the game down would result in "an even bigger backlash".  As Taosym explains, "We made a protest discount in order to get as many people playing our game as possible to see how really tame it all was in the end compared to games on their service that are way more explicit. We're not out of the woods yet, but I think this issue did create greater visibility for Lupiesoft, and we saw a giant increase in players playing our game, and new fans following our games now."

...we're going to have to reconsider what degree of content has to be cut in order to retail on Steam.

John Pickett, MangaGamer

Taosym admitted that a potential crackdown on sexual content by Valve could have disastrous consequences, as Steam sales account for 80 percent of Lupiesoft's business. "If our game did get pulled... it could completely ruin us long-term. We have had to rethink our strategy by adding our games to other stores and prevent an issue like this from affecting us in the future. However, it does suck that the company with the biggest market share in game sales is this reckless with their business decisions."

Mutiny!! (Lupiesoft, 2017)

Valve's aborted takedown blitz appears to have alienated a considerable section of the community, with MangaGamer revealing it will also be revising its "future strategies for retailing on Steam", in the wake of the upcoming re-review of Kindred Spirits."We've received a lot of positive press and response from fans who are equally upset to see Kindred Spirits and other titles threatened this way, but this certainly makes it hard to trust that Steam will hold to the results of its reviews and serve as a reliable storefront for our titles," Pickett says."This incident has given us more reasons to be grateful to GOG and excited for the opportunities to retail our titles there as well. Luckily for us we also sell our products in their completely uncensored and uncut form on our own storefront——so we'll continue doing so there without any changes, but going forward we're going to have to reconsider what degree of content has to be cut in order to retail on Steam. That includes making the decision to withhold certain titles from Steam that we would have sold there otherwise under the old policies and content guidelines."

Galaxy Girls (Dharker Studio, 2017)

Steam users are also finding their own way around Valve's content standards, with curator groups such as the Cut-Content Police dedicated to warning players about games that are "censored due to cut, edited, changed, or overall modified content".According to the group's creator, Marusame, it's unfair to customers when a game's content is censored or removed, although he does acknowledge that some sections of the community are indifferent to the issue. "Consumers are being cheated when stuff is censored or removed," Marusame says. "Though many say they do not care about removed content so long as they get the game or experience they came for."Marusame believes that the pressure to censor content on Steam is partly the result of meddling from the online payment processing giant PayPal. Historically, Paypal has taken a relatively hard stance against adult content, leaving websites like MangaGamer limited to credit card purchases.

HuniePop (HuniePot, 2015)

"I believe that many censorship decisions are simply made because of the whims of payment processors not wanting to accept such transactions. I see no reason why Steam couldn’t have an adult section that takes credit card only. Websites like eBay already have adult sections… but with family sharing, and Steam's most likely outdated system, implementing all of this would be a huge hassle, so I feel they made the decision to simply self-regulate and self-censor," he says."The choice we have now is a very flawed system, as patch links go down, patches can be lost or no longer supported for newer versions of the games, sometimes requiring mods or simply being lost to time," says Marusame. "In a perfect world we would have the choice to simply pick the censored copy or the uncensored one, or have options in the games menu."

PC Gamer contacted Valve regarding the recalled takedown notices during our initial reporting of the story, and the company declined to comment. We'll update this story if Valve makes any further statements about its policies.

Mutiny!! - Lupiesoft
Like our previous post, where we outlined what happens if Mutiny!! is removed from Steam. I want to say what Lupiesoft plans to do in the likelihood this fiasco is fully resolved and stays on Steam.

Firstly we're going to adjust the pricing. Now Mutiny!! is a long game, several hours long in fact so when it came out, as the story gets longer, and we add DLC, we want to encourage people to get the base game so they can get the DLC.

Think like 100% Orange Juice, where Mutiny!! has more of a DLC model. That DLC model will be continuously adding expansion content in the form of Adventures that are a couple hours of new story, as well as adding smaller DLC in the form of unique character routes, of existing characters, and future characters yet to be added.

New Features

What we've seen over this week has been such a big outpouring of support, and the new reviews has given us things to think about, and I want to share some of those plans, both near future, and farther future plans.

  • Custom Patch Installer
  • New Languages! (We're looking into translating to Chinese/Japanese now)
  • "Streamer Mode" turns any softcore nudity into swimsuits to let the game be streamed on Twitch
  • UI update just to increase the look of the UI as well as animations and more SFX for the minigames!
  • New minigames, existing puzzles should feel more visually interesting
  • Secret areas with optional very difficult puzzles
  • Updates to the base game as Lupiesoft becomes more skilled, we want to keep adding cool fun stuff to Mutiny!!

Overall Lupiesoft will be hiring extra people in order to write for Mutiny!! faster, making new stories at a reasonable pace. Without other Lupiesoft titles slowing down anything.

We have no intention of making Mutiny!! a freemium game, but something where making the DLC pays for continual development of that DLC.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Dizzy Hearts is our very first conceptualized project, and started development a couple years ago. We funded it through Kickstarter in fact, but ran into delays, however with Mutiny!! out and our Mutiny!! writer working on the Adventure1 DLC, it felt the right to release Dizzy Hearts this year.

It's a visual novel, coming of age story where a girl from the sun-lit half of the world ventures into the moon-lit land of eternal night and elves. A yuri story, a steam safe game but with ecchi content.

This new Kickstarter is just for voice actors, we're teaming up with a pro recording studio Sound Cadence who've worked on several anime, the cast they've assembled for us on this project speaks for itself I think!

Mutiny!! on Lupiesoft
Mutiny!! - Lupiesoft

Mutiny!! launches on Steam, and MangaGamer October 20th.

This is a huge milestone for Lupiesoft as a studio, and I thought I'd take some time to talk about our future plans for Mutiny!!.

Mutiny!! follows the story of Grace Barnet, a prostitute who finds out she's been made captain of (The Bleak Heart) The Mutiny!! a pirate inter-planar skyship after the Navy come looking for it's original captain (pictured above). Forced to leave in a hurry lest she be captured in the previous captain's place, she then discovers the enormous debt she's been shackled to after being made captain. Mutiny!! is a fun, sexy, and light-hearted adventure story, where Grace must learn to be captain, and her crew of misfits must learn to be treasure hunters if she's to pay down her new sizable debt.

Mutiny!! is an unconventional visual novel that forgoes the common route into character route trappings, the central focus of Mutiny!! is on it's main adventure story, with character specific stories to come later as bonus route DLC. These DLCs are small character focused escapades but are not meant to be the meat & potatoes of what is Mutiny!!.

Following Mutiny!!'s release on Steam and MangaGamer we will prepare to immediately release the first two bonus routes.

Grozdana Kakra & Elizabeth Margaret bonus routes will be joining Mutiny!! soon after release!

After the first wave of DLC, Lupiesoft will begin work on Adventure #1, a larger scale story campaign set soon after the events of Mutiny!!.

Grace Barnet and her crew run afoul of the stern Capitão who has been hunting for the Captain of The Mutiny!! (formerly The Bleak Heart). Grace is reunited with an old friend, and Bree is shocked over the antics of her parents. New story, characters, minigames, and other sordid affairs await in the first large DLC of Mutiny!!

Following the events of Adventure #1, Grace turns to Bree or Foo to become First Mate, they've grown a lot since their adventures first started, can either of them handle the new responsibility?

A mysterious key has been discovered, allowing The Mutiny!! to cross a heretofore locked plane. What awaits them on the other side, and what is the Taiyō Conglomerate?!

As you can see, a lot has been planned for the future of Mutiny!!, with many new fun characters, and new adventures waiting for you to see! We hope you'll check out Mutiny!! on Steam and on Mangagamer when it releases October 20th!
