Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Enhanced Plus Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Owlcat Games last week finished their crowdfunding campaign for Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous, an “indirect sequel” to 2018’s throwback isometric RPG Pathfinder: Kingmaker, with a big wad of cash. The Kickstarter was seeking at least $300,000 ( 240k) to help fund development and ended at a tidy $2,054,339 ( 1.6m). It’s going ahead, then, though sadly they missed the stretch goal to add dinosaurs you could befriend and ride.

Digital adaptations of tabletop RPGs are still having a heyday, much to my personal delight. Owlcat Games are continuing on in that righteous work with a sequel to their 2018 RPG, Pathfinder: Kingmaker. There’s little to know about Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous at this stage, least of all any hint at a release window, but Owlcat divulges a couple tidbits worth knowing with the announcement.

Starting a new tabletop RPG campaign is a bit like joining an complicated polyamorous relationship. You have to make sure you like your companions, but most importantly, you and the Dungeon Master must share the same vision. ANYWAY, my point is that in a game of Dungeons & Dragons, some DMs like to follow the rules by the book, others just use rules as a frame to tell a story. Some focus on combat, and some enjoy drama. Some have a very strict plotline to follow, while others start with vague ideas and let the players wander around. There isn t a right or wrong way of playing. It s just a matter of finding a group of people who like the same things you like.

Booting up Pathfinder: Kingmaker feels like starting a new tabletop campaign with strangers. After all, the game is a close adaptation of a renowned D&D campaign. But while I have a passing acquaintance with this ruleset, I don t know what kind of storyteller will guide me through my adventure. What kind of Dungeon Master is it?

It s Halloween (month)! I don t know about you lovely lot, but there s nothing I find more spooky or chilling than charts detailing what the most popular video games are in a given week. That’s me, Fraser, filling in for John who is on holiday. A terrifying holiday, I bet.

I’ve always thought the best RPGs are the ones where you have a home to come back to, to celebrate victory and plan your next – Pathfinder: Kingmaker, you get your own town. Released today, Kingmaker looks like familiar Baldur’s Gate-esque RPG adventuring, but with personal purpose. You’re securing your> lands, and in-between quests you get to develop your burgeoning kingdom.

Based on the almost-D&D tabletop RPG Pathfinder (and its Kingmaker campaign series), the game was Kickstarted by devs Owlcat Games last June. Below, the launch trailer.

Paizo’s pen and paper RPG Pathfinder may not be Dungeons & Dragons, but it’s as close as you can get to it while still being legally distinct, which makes it perfect source material for a Baldur’s Gate-esque old school RPG. Successfully Kickstarted a year ago, Pathfinder: Kingmaker now has a release date – September 25th – and a very fancy new trailer below to accompany the announcement.
