DestructoPod - DestructoPod
Greetings Pod Racers,

The game controller is good to go for the moment so it's back to polish. The trench walls are first in line with a canyon lift, starting with new texture maps.

This is a repeating texture but it's not super noticeable.

Adding some embedded rocks should help break up the pattern too. Here is a slow fly through.

DestructoPod - DestructoPod

Hi Everyone,
DestructoPod has gone full auto rapid fire. No more single shot per click required. Hold down the fire button and blaze away.

The pod requires fast steering to avoid obstacles and enemy fire, but it also needs finer aiming controls to take out targets as well. Using the mouse to fly and aim is easy, but terrible for hard turns. Especially if you wish to do a U-turn. For this, use the ‘A’ and ‘D’ keys to perform hard left and right turns. This setup works well (at least for me) for very fast and accurate game play.

Controllers are a different story. Putting both these qualities in a single controller stick that has only about an inch of movement is problematic. So I opted to use both controller sticks for steering. One stick for faster flight steering and the other for slower finer aiming control.

The pod coasting speed has increased. It is set to coast just fast enough to where the course can still be flown with only the aim control.

Thanks for your support.

Helmar

Hello Everyone,

The Star Wars trench run was a big inspiration behind DestructoPod. I wanted to create a game that encapsulated the excitement I felt when I saw the X-wing fighters scream down the Death Star’s trench avoiding blasters. I than augmented the idea with twisty canyons and other obstacles to make the game more challenging. But I’m realizing flying is not for everyone. In fact, flying in narrow corridors can be actually quite challenging. So I’m considering adding a FPS mode that is similar to how the “Mindless Mayhem” level is played. Players could than run the course instead of fly it. All other aspects of the game would remain the same.

The controller remains my biggest Achilles heel. I’ve always used the keyboard/mouse to play games and avoided controllers. I’m simply bad at using them. I figure if I can get it to the point where I can fly it well using a controller, everyone else should have no problem with it. So enter the “Duke” and some controller modifications. I should have the update ready by the end of the week.

Ideas, thoughts and suggestions are always welcome.
Thanks for your support.

Hello Earthlings,

DestructoPod is now early access, and I have started to get some game play feedback. It would appear that the early levels maybe too difficult. Running into anything causes damage and when you are just getting started, running in to the canyon walls is inevitable. I’ve reduced the amount of damage caused by these impacts significantly. Pod speed and angle of deflection are both used to compute damage. A full speed run straight in to a canyon wall will now only cause 2% damage (It was around 12%). Grazing the canyon walls produces no damage at all.

DestructoPod now has full controller support. My thanks to the Valve staff for their most excellent advice. The default controller configuration is now much more in line with what is typical of most games. Default configurations have been setup for the Steam, PS4, and Xbox controllers.

Thanks for your support.

Hi folks,
I'm in the final days of prepping DestructoPod for release and decided I need to add a lot more controller flexibility. Currently the game is only setup for xbox. Using steam’s controller system I will be able to fully support the steam, xbox, and ps4 controllers. The change has already made the game controller easier to use and much more flexible in its setup.

Unfortunately, this also means that I need to delay the launch by about a week. Need to perform some stress testing on this change and get it signed off. Sorry about that, but this will definitely result in a much better controller experience.

Also, if you have a controller setup that you think would be ideal for DestructoPod, please let me know.

Thanks for your support!
