Last year brought RPG gems like Disco Elysium. Was there an RPG as good released in 2020? We’ve updated our list of the best RPGs of all time to reflect the best of the past year – and there’s still dozens of older classics, too.

Roll up, roll up, The Butcher’s Circus is (about to be) in town. Merciless RPG Darkest Dungeon is set to launch its PVP mode later today, letting you pit your band of stressed out adventurers against those of a stressed out person in the real world. The new mode is completely separate to the singleplayer campaign, and comes with new trinkets and reworked Heroes.

The Dungeon’s first free trial weekend also kicks off today, so you can get all cross without spending a penny.

“Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.”

All it takes is seeing one a single quote from the Ancestor in Darkest Dungeon, and I’ve instantly got his voice booming in the back of my mind. I suppose it’s quite fitting for a roguelike RPG based on lovecraftian horror to still hear voices after you turn it off.

The circus has come to Darkest Dungeon! Grab ye olde candy floss, ride ye olde wooden rollercoaster. Let’s not bother with the clowns, there’s bloodsport to be had. Upcoming DLC The Butcher’s Circus is bringing grand old player-versus-player battles to Darkest Dungeon. After all, in a game about testing your luck against horrors in the dark, what could be more terrifying than taking on your fellow human being?

The greasy realm of the videogame is not always the best place to look for good writing. For every Disco Elysium there are roughly 800 Detroit: Beyond Humans. But it is a good place to look for wondrous, over-the-top nonsense. I m talking about character dialogue so flamboyant and exaggerated, you could insert some line breaks and it would instantly become a verse in a glam rock anthem. Here are the 12 most extravagant, exuberant, and intense lines of dialogue. In games, subtext is just whatever s written on the side of the nuclear submarine.

You’ll ocassionally find someone on the internet sounding off about how the strategy genre is dead. If you see such a person in the future, send them this list of the best strategy games ever made.

Look! A ranking of the 50 best RPGs on PC. I know, you never asked for this, but here it is. It is 100 percent correct, we double-checked. The RPG is a broad and deep sea and fishing out the best games from its characterful waters is no easy task. But we are capable fishers on the good ship RPS, and know when to humanely throw back a tiddler or fight to heave up a monster. Enough of this salty metaphor. Here are the 50 best RPGs you can play on PC today.

It s often said that the more restrictions you re working against, the more creative you ll become. We re planning to test that theory to its limits next Friday at PAX West, where our Nate will be inviting a team of developers to puzzle their way around some real thinkabouters in Rock Paper Shotgun s Game Design Hotseat.

How could you make a grand strategy game with only six old Casio calculators for display? How would you design a massively multiplayer online beat em up? What about an FPS controlled with a trombone? We won t be posing these questions (because we ve just put them here and that ruins the surprise), but we ll be posing questions just like them, and giving the team a tablet to sketch out their workings as they scramble for answers.

Apparently the Darkest Dungeon wasn’t the darkest after all, because they’ve gone and found another, darker one up a mountain – yep, Darkest Dungeon 2 is on the way. Red Hook Studios aren’t ready to give any dates, but they did share a few vague thoughts on the sequel with RPS fan-site PC Gamer. A familiar roster of heroes are lined up to go up some mountains, possibly filled with madness, in search of more cursed loot to hoard, and yet another cosmic evil to vanquish. Expect the return of the deliciously over-the-top narrator – hear him boom in the teaser below.
