Own the Map — Terms & Conditions
Effective 21 August 2026

1. Who these terms are between
These Terms & Conditions form an agreement between you and the operator trading as Own the Map (we, us or our) whenever you create or use an Own the Map account, website, Windows application, Steam build, itch.io edition, Discord bot or related service (the Service). If you do not agree, do not create an account or continue using the Service.
The Service is an evolving early-access game. Beta World and playtests are testing environments and may be less stable, incomplete or reset more often than Live World.

2. Eligibility and accounts
- You must be at least 13 years old and meet any higher minimum age that applies where you live. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must approve any purchase.
- Provide accurate registration information, keep login credentials secure and tell Support promptly if an account may be compromised.
- One person must not use alternate accounts, automation or coordinated accounts to manipulate rewards, referrals, trades, Companies, leaderboards, demand, events or any other system.
- Accounts, invitations, Beta access and privileges are personal. You may not sell, rent, transfer or share them.

3. The fictional game world
Own the Map is entertainment software. Every property, valuation, currency amount, rent, tax, licence, card, reward, business, vehicle, contract, Company and ownership claim is fictional game content.
- Game ownership gives no ownership, access, tenancy, investment, financial interest or other right in real land, buildings, addresses, businesses or transport services.
- Virtual currency and virtual items have no cash value, are not money, cannot be withdrawn and may not be sold or exchanged outside mechanisms expressly provided by us.
- Map, address and place information may be incomplete, approximate, outdated or wrong. Do not use the game for navigation, emergencies, investment or real-property decisions.

4. Our right to operate and change the game
You authorise us to operate, secure, moderate and develop the Service. To keep a shared persistent economy playable, we may make reasonable changes at any time, with notice where practical.
- We may add, remove, pause, replace or redesign features, maps, modes, rewards, objectives, events, Companies, virtual items, integrations and platform support.
- We may change balance, prices, income, upkeep, demand, rarity, drop rates, licences, progression, prestige requirements, limits, cooldowns, multipliers and eligibility rules, including changes that affect existing virtual holdings.
- We may correct mistakes, exploits, duplicated rewards, corrupted progress or unfair advantages; reverse or recalculate affected transactions; reclaim improperly obtained virtual items or currency; and restore accounts from reliable records.
- We may schedule maintenance, limit capacity, suspend systems, reset Beta progress, separate Live and Beta data, or discontinue part or all of the Service. For a material discontinuation affecting paid content, we will respect rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
- Administrative decisions may use logs, economy records and anti-abuse signals. We will not use these powers to remove statutory consumer rights or excuse fraud, deliberate wrongdoing or liability that the law does not allow us to exclude.

5. Payments, supporter benefits and virtual items
- Some cosmetics, themes, supporter memberships or other optional content may be sold through Stripe, Steam, Discord/MEE6 or another clearly identified checkout provider.
- Prices, billing period, renewal status and included benefits are shown before purchase. A recurring membership continues until cancelled through the provider that sold it.
- Supporter rewards are cosmetic or recognition-based and do not promise a competitive advantage, permanent server operation or ownership of game assets.
- Platform and payment-provider rules may also apply. Refunds, faulty digital content and cancellation rights are handled in accordance with applicable law and the relevant provider process.
- Unless the law requires otherwise, used virtual items and consumed or time-limited benefits are not transferable between accounts and are lost when the account is deleted.

6. Acceptable use
Play fairly and lawfully. You must not:
- use bots, scripts, macros, scraping, unauthorised clients, exploits, packet manipulation or other automation to play, claim, farm, scan, trade, refer or progress;
- probe security, evade limits or enforcement, disrupt the Service, overload providers, reverse engineer protected components, or access another person’s account or non-public data;
- pump value or rewards through alternate accounts, collusion, sham activity, misleading referrals or transactions with no genuine gameplay purpose;
- harass, threaten, discriminate, impersonate, dox, sexually exploit, scam or post illegal, infringing or harmful content;
- misrepresent the game as real property, an investment, gambling, financial advice or a way to earn withdrawable money; or
- sell accounts, virtual currency, virtual items, services or access for real-world value without our written approval.

7. Player content and community features
You keep any rights you own in text, names, screenshots and images you submit. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, copy, format, display, moderate and distribute that content only as reasonably needed to run, protect and promote the Service. You confirm you have the right to submit it.
- Company chat, profile names, avatars, bug reports, support messages and public labels may be reviewed or moderated.
- We may reject, hide, edit or remove content and restrict communication features where reasonably needed for safety, legality, privacy, quality or enforcement.
- Do not include sensitive personal information, precise home locations or information about another person without authority.

8. Suspension, correction and termination
We may warn, restrict, suspend or terminate an account where we reasonably believe these terms were broken, the account threatens players or the Service, payment was reversed, the law or a platform requires action, or continued access creates material risk.
- Urgent protective action may be immediate. Where appropriate, Support can review an explanation or appeal.
- Termination may remove access to progression, virtual currency, virtual items, linked accounts, Companies and unclaimed rewards.
- You may stop using the Service at any time and may permanently delete your account from Account & settings. Deletion is deliberately protected by password, acknowledgements and an exact confirmation phrase.
- Provisions that by their nature continue after termination—including intellectual property, audit integrity, payment records, limitations and dispute terms—continue to apply.

9. Intellectual property and third-party services
The Service software, artwork, game systems, branding and original content belong to us or our licensors. We give you a limited, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the Service for personal, non-commercial play while your account remains authorised.
- OpenStreetMap and other map data remain subject to their own licences and attribution.
- Steam, itch.io, Discord, Stripe, MEE6, map, routing, hosting and other third-party services have separate terms and may change or become unavailable.
- Do not copy, redistribute, commercially exploit or create a competing service from protected Own the Map content except where law or an applicable open licence permits it.

10. Availability, responsibility and liability
We use reasonable care and skill but do not promise uninterrupted access, error-free data, permanent availability of any feature, compatibility with every device or preservation of Beta/test progress. Internet, platform and third-party failures may be outside our control.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, breach of rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, or any other liability the law does not permit us to limit. Subject to that, we are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when you agreed, business losses from consumer use, or loss caused by your breach, unsupported device, third-party platform or event outside reasonable control.

11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms for changes to the game, law, safety, providers or business operation. Material changes will be shown in the Service and require fresh acceptance before continued play. The effective date and version identify the terms you accepted. Changes do not remove rights that arose before the change where the law prevents that.

12. Law, disputes and contact
Please contact Support first so we can try to resolve a problem. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer elsewhere, you retain mandatory protections and court rights provided by the law where you live. If one term is unenforceable, the rest remain in effect. A delay in enforcing a term is not a waiver.
Questions can be sent through in-game Support or to support@own-the-map.com.

Active playtest notice — effective 27 August 2026

Own the Map is still being built. Features, property prices, rewards, progression requirements and the wider economy may change frequently.

Bugs may occur, and gameplay progress, fictional currency or property ownership may sometimes be adjusted or reset to test major changes or protect the game economy. We will provide advance notice of planned resets whenever reasonably possible.

I understand that I am playing a test version and that gameplay progress is not guaranteed to remain permanent.

Own the Map — Privacy Policy
Effective 21 August 2026

1. Who controls your information
The operator trading as Own the Map is the controller of personal information used to run the game and related support services. Contact us through in-game Support or support@own-the-map.com. This policy applies to the website, Windows application, Steam builds, Discord bot, Live World, Beta World and connected support systems.

2. Information we collect
- Account data: email address, password hash, username, age confirmation, acceptance records, account status and session identifiers.
- Linked-platform data: Discord, Steam or itch.io identifiers, usernames/persona names, profile image, country code, roles, membership state and authentication timestamps when you choose to link them.
- Gameplay data: fictional balance, ledger, properties, progression, cards, licences, contracts, Companies, chat, friendships, events, rewards, purchases, moderation and anti-abuse records.
- Support and content: help messages, bug reports, screenshots, profile images, public labels, reports and correspondence you choose to submit.
- Device and security diagnostics: client ID, app/browser/OS details, viewport, language, time zone, connection type, IP address and approximate IP region. Precise GPS diagnostics are optional and can be disabled in Account & settings.
- Product analytics: game area, day, deliberate page visits and visible active seconds. We do not use this analytics feature to record typed search text, private Company chat, mouse positions or precise map movement.
- Payment records: product, amount, currency, order/transaction identifiers, status and entitlement. Card or wallet credentials are handled by the checkout provider and are not stored by Own the Map.

3. How and why we use it
- Contract: create and authenticate accounts; provide the shared game, purchases and requested support; preserve progression; and enforce gameplay rules you accepted.
- Legitimate interests: secure accounts, prevent bots and pumping, diagnose faults, moderate community features, understand feature use, balance the economy, recover errors and maintain auditable shared-world records. We balance these purposes against player privacy.
- Legal obligation: keep records required for tax, accounting, consumer, fraud-prevention, law-enforcement or data-protection duties.
- Consent: optional promotional email offers and precise GPS diagnostics. Promotional emails are sent only when you actively opt in. You can unsubscribe from marketing in any promotional email; essential account and security messages continue. Withdrawing consent does not make earlier lawful use unlawful.
- We do not sell personal information. We do not use real property data or player information to provide financial, investment or real-estate decisions.

4. Public and social information
Your username, approved avatar, selected badges/cosmetics, public profile, leaderboard position, Company membership and parts of your fictional empire may be visible to other players. Company chat is visible to that Company and may be reviewed by authorised moderators. Do not use a real name or upload personal information if you do not want it shown in those places.

5. Providers and recipients
We share only what is reasonably needed with service providers acting for us or with platforms you choose to connect.
- Vercel and database/hosting providers host the website, APIs, files and game database; Railway hosts the Discord worker.
- Discord, Steam and itch.io provide linked identity, community, authentication and platform features.
- Stripe, Steam, itch.io and Discord/MEE6 process relevant checkout, membership and payment events.
- Resend or another configured email provider sends account-recovery, service and opted-in promotional messages.
- Groq processes Ask Wiki questions and the restricted game context used to answer them. It is not given direct database access, passwords, email addresses or unrestricted player records.
- OpenFreeMap, OpenStreetMap/Nominatim/Overpass and routing providers supply map, search and route data. Map requests may expose an IP address to those providers in the ordinary way internet services work.
- Professional advisers, regulators, courts, law enforcement or a purchaser of the game business may receive data where lawfully necessary, subject to appropriate confidentiality and legal safeguards.

6. International transfers
Some providers or their infrastructure may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where required, we rely on adequacy regulations, approved contractual safeguards or another lawful transfer mechanism. Provider privacy information explains their own locations and safeguards.

7. Retention
- Account and gameplay records are kept while the account is active and as needed to operate the persistent shared world.
- Expired login sessions and short-lived verification tokens remain only for their security lifetime or until cleaned up.
- Support, moderation, anti-abuse and security records are kept for as long as reasonably needed to investigate, protect players, resolve disputes and demonstrate enforcement.
- Payment, entitlement, tax and accounting records may be retained for the period required by law or a platform agreement.
- When an account is deleted, login access and direct profile identity are removed or anonymised immediately. Player-written support and Company content, linked identities, device diagnostics and optional location diagnostics are removed or scrubbed. Anonymised ledger, ownership, anti-fraud and transaction facts may remain so the shared economy and legal records are not corrupted.
- Backups may retain protected copies for a limited disaster-recovery cycle before automatic overwrite. They are not used to restore a deleted player except where legally required.

8. Account deletion and your rights
Open Agent → Account & settings → Delete account to start the protected deletion flow. You may also contact Support. Deletion is permanent and releases virtual property, cancels active market activity, removes access and destroys unclaimed virtual benefits.
- Depending on the law and circumstances, you may ask for access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability or objection, and may withdraw consent.
- The right to erasure is not absolute. We may retain information required by law or necessary for legal claims, fraud prevention and genuinely anonymised economy integrity.
- We normally respond to a verified rights request within one month. We may need enough information to confirm that the requester controls the account.
- You may complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk, and may also have the right to contact your local supervisory authority.

9. Security
We use password hashing, protected cookies, access controls, rate limits, audit records and other technical and organisational safeguards appropriate to the Service. No internet service can guarantee absolute security. Keep your password and connected accounts secure and contact Support if you suspect misuse.

10. Children
Own the Map is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly allow an under-13 account. If you believe a child below the applicable minimum has supplied information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it. Players under 18 should involve a parent or guardian before purchasing optional content.

11. Automated signals and game decisions
Anti-abuse systems may use account relationships, rate limits, device/session signals and unusual gameplay patterns to flag activity for restriction or human review. These systems protect the fictional economy; they are not used to make decisions about employment, credit, housing or other real-world legal rights. Contact Support if you believe an account action is wrong.

12. Policy changes and contact
We may update this policy when the game, providers or law changes. Material changes are shown in the Service and require a fresh acknowledgement before continued play. Questions and rights requests can be sent through in-game Support or support@own-the-map.com.
