\n\t\t\t\t\tLet me preface this by saying I am a Brigador fan. This game has been among the top of my list of most anticipated titles, based on how much I loved the first one.

I put 37 hours into the demo. I couldn't get enough. The aesthetics, vehicles, gunplay, destruction, sound design, OST, gritty ambience, and most of all the gameplay loop. It scratched an itch for me that hadn't been scratched since the glory days of Syndicate and GTA1/2. The fight -> scavenge -> fight -> extract -> upgrade & progress loop was addicting and satisfying.

Now I find myself with 14 hours played in the EA release and I'm finished with all the available content. Sinkhole cleared, garage fully upgraded and stocked with the best vics available. Armory bursting with weapons, the coolest of which I cannot even use because the mechs/tanks/gravs that I grew to love in the demo are not present. There's no incentive to keep playing. There's nothing else to grind, nothing else to explore, and nothing else to progress towards.

The demo has more content then the paid release. That should never be the case. The added narrative content was decent but very brief, and now the sandbox content has been absolutely gutted comparatively.

I wouldn't recommend buying in its current state. You're better off playing the demo until the game is way more fleshed out. Honestly I regret my purchase. I should have done what I always do and forgot about the game until it was out of early access - patience is the best asset a gamer can have nowadays, but with how much I loved the previous title and enjoyed the demo I wanted to give the devs the benefit of the doubt. To save time I'll provide a TL:DR and just say that you should try the demo (it has its own store page!) if you've the slightest interest in the game's description.
If you enjoy the demo, maybe hold off for now and check this release in a couple of months. If you really enjoyed it, then consider a purchase and lending your voice to the ongoing feedback and understand that the current version does come with the following caveats:
  • Your general power level is much weaker because we're missing a number of the more formidable vehicle fabs from the demo, as well as swappable armor rigs. No Carmine Rig means that you're squishy foddermeat on-foot that'll get mulched into a pile of gore from a stray burst of 7.62mm in a microsecond.

  • Progression is slower and more piecemeal: the narrative campaign and garage modes are now intertwined, as was their original intention. You WILL throw rocks and stomp on Corvid nuts in the dark sewers until you find an actual firearm. You WILL have to huff it on foot like some ground-pounding grunt until you earn the right to steal a car and store one in your smelly terrorist cave.

  • Enemy AI is more responsive and tactical. Reinforcements arrive more often to keep you on your toes even after you kill everyone. I personally enjoy this, but it seems it's a more contentious topic as the most recent hotfix that was addressed to some complaints may have gone overkill in nerfing enemy density. Early Access disclaimer etc etc

  • Some of the more unfinished aspects from the Nextfest demo still remain present, like programmer art doodle-icons and missing item descriptions. Game's in Early Access, et cetera, though I'd be remiss to not voice that I was slightly disappointed at the negligible difference for such things in this version because I like staring at pictures of absurd mech-scale weapons and reading what kind of super propellants the funny space people use for their high velocity rotary cannons.
Regardless, I still like what Stellar Jockeys put out with the concept of Brigador Killers as a whole, so I bought it and I'm giving it this here Thumbs Up™ review, but I also think it's pretty understandable that some are frustrated in the version differences.
I do, however, maintain faith that it's an inevitability that we'll be back to the heights of power accessible in the demo AND more.
Anyways I'm gonna start my actual full stream of consciousness rambling here.
At the current time of Early Access launch, this game is a strange case where the publicly available demo version has more "raw" content to engage with and discover than the actual purchasable title, though with some exceptions such as this release featuring a proper ramping of narrative, some extra maps to play around on, and overhauled enemy AI.

I'm of two minds on this.

I acknowledge that the purpose of the demo release was to demonstrate a vertical slice of the game's identity and as a result, is intentionally designed to be unhinged and generally impress any would-be comers looking around to see just what the hell this Brigador business entails. It accomplished this very well for me. I played the heck out of the demo, dumping 50 hours into it back during this year's Spring Nextfest over the course of a weekend. Couldn't get enough and was wondering just where the hell has this type of game been my entire life. Literal crack.

I love mechs. I love inventory and ammo management. I love being a little loot goblin and amassing large quantities of high explosives and ammunition in my cave between carrying out acts of insurgency against the government just like any other dutiful up-and-coming terrorist cell. I especially love stealing consumer cars, taking them back to my garage and frankensteining them into bespoke kitbashed abominations.

One such abominable example is the Party Van, a personal favorite of mine in which you convert an extremely generic panel-type delivery van into an engine of proletariat fury by welding tank treads to its chassis and glueing a couple of turret mounts to the roof in order to support an autocannon normally rated for IFVs, and a light machine gun that was originally mounted on a SWAT car. And despite all that extra weight, you still have enough space in the van's interior to lug a big ol' storage box to store and transport all the crap collected from the genocide you enact mid-mission. The perfect vehicle to employ and satiate my homicidal and loot-gobliny tendencies.

Suffice to say, ♥♥♥♥ was cash and this has been on my radar ever since. Had me trying out the original Brigador, which I've owned for the past ten years but have only really bounced on it on and off in occasional half-hour spurts and I finally got around to maxing out its codex when I got bored with the BK demo. Definitely a fun little arcade city destruction experience, but the longevity and narrative theming of BK here ("insurgency sim" as a descriptor) felt a lot more compelling to me, on top of the intersection of playable infantry and mech combat being a rarity in games.

Come Early Access release, I was practically chomping at the bit fiending for more. While I've already documented the changes between the demo and this release above, I hadn't stated how I felt about it all with much granularity.

I'd say that while I still like what we have right now, in candor I do feel that it was a bit of an obvious misstep on the part of the developers to have the demo version be so packed full of goodies, only for a not-insignificant portion of it be inaccessible beyond console commands with the Early Access launch.

They've stated their reasons for this already. For example, in the case of all the rigs that were originally in the demo, they temporarily disabled them in the interests of "progression and game balance" and will reintroduce them in the future. Presumably, the vehicle fabs like the Party Van and such were disabled for the same reasons even though you can currently buy treads and such.
I have no problem with that and adjusting to the new flow in the absence of such advantages. It's their game, so it's their prerogative to adjust whatever they need to fit their full vision. But to be frank, I don't think it takes a genius to predict the likely optics on such a decision.

In my view, it's reasonable to view a demo and its contents as a baseline for how something will be. And so naturally, it creates a certain level of expectation for what the actual priced version would contain at minimum. I would say things like the alteration of more abstract mechanics like AI behavioral overhauls and loot scarcity is completely fine between versions.

But when something more visceral and tangible is taken away between the demo and priced version, like the Rigs or the ability to fabricate the more fun jury-rigged ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like the Party Van, I feel that it's inevitable you are going to arrive at, and cause, a rather unnecessary conflict of expectations from the people who gave the demo a try and bought the priced version carrying those expectations.

And let me reiterate - I totally understand the dev's reasoning, it's their vision so they can adjust balance and progression as to how they see fit. But I think at least retaining the Carmine Rig with its increased armor and health would have definitely mitigated a lot of these negative reviews concerning difficulty.

I've rambled enough. It's still a very fun game at its core if you like LARPing as a terrorist and will most certainly be an awesome war crimes viscera-spreading stomping simulator like the original once mechs make their way back in. Just expect to wait a while 'til then.

Personally, I've already trashed a funny space tank with a van full of IEDs and added a certain someone to a certain collection so now I'm just sitting pretty waiting for more. It's only going to get better from here, especially since a modkit is in the cards.\t\t\t\t\t

Just play the demo for now. I even like the placeholder graphics they use more than in the full release. I have faith the game will be improved upon shortly, but man...what a shame.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wanted to hold off on reviewing the game since the early access and all the connundrum about it.

Personally I sit on the other side of the fence to the outrage and the idea of 'it has less content'. The demo was fun to play and I don't usually play demos, but I found the Demo you could also end up making everything and getting a bunch of stuff for no consequence and like making a police APC didn't feel like I was putting in much work.

The more narrative driven gating of content made the earlier missions and levels feel a bit more, intense? Not having a 556 rifle right at the start made me play and toy with other things, being bumped back down pegs when I ♥♥♥♥ up and lose my weapon only to claw my way back up to having good stuff again felt much more engaging than simply running police base and looting a million stuff (which you can still do I guess lol).

I'm looking forwards to the other stuff being able to be made. I'm excited to drive the mog in a situation where it's going to feel like it does in the book. A powersuit.

But anyway, the review.

I like Brigador, the setting and the lore is surprisingly well written if you go looking for it. There's a lot of tongue in cheek humour around the various items and stuff but it doesn't detract from the setting at all. I enjoy the mishmash of kinda sci-fi but also everyone is still using guns from the 80ies, a don't fix what isn't broke type deal. It would be nice to get some more kind of lore and writings about humanity in general. But I digress, Killers much like the original is written fantastically. It too has an audiobook that extrapolates a bit more on the setting which is both narrated and written amazingly. For now alot of the items have placeholder images and awaiting lore snippets but reading what is there already is making me excited to read future entries.

Stylistically the game is great, its isometric, its pixelly. It brings me back to the time I was young and playing red alert 2 on my W95 PC. Everything has a distinct look. My only gripe about it is sometimes things look a little washed out but I believe that's also part of selling its vibe.

The UI is decent, the aiming lines are intuative and being able to lock to target with Q makes shooting a heck of a lot easier. My only umbrance with it, is it can be kinda clunky. Running away to hit tab and then press E on a medkit or something makes it hard to survive sometime.

Difficulty wise, I found it a lot more harder than the demo but I think it was a good thing. Every time I left a mission with new toys or loot I felt like I earnt it. Losing gear doesn't really matter when you get further in but in the earlier content I felt like I was weighing up risk and reward, Do I look around and loot a bit more and risk running into the reinforcements and potentially losing everything. As someone who's played extensive tarkov, I enjoy this. I don't want piles of guns and ammo throwin in my lap because then there'd be nothing to work for.

The sound design matches the aestetic, its not all base boosted with guns that click when the ammunition starts to run out. Its straight to the point.

Honestly, I'm looking forwards to the future of this game. I'm excited to see where it goes, what they add. Will we get a more sandboxy experience in time? Will it turn into eventually managing a whole insurgency? Who knows, heck maybe even we'll be able to get a touro.

But in short, I do think the game is worth getting especially if you enjoyed the first one. It's not expensive it wont break your bank and the game is only going to get more content. You can simply wait or you can play some now, and then play again in bits and bobs as they add more. But I think in short, don't listen to all the boners in the review section and simply just make your mind up yourself.\t\t\t\t\t

If this had been released in this state as 1.0, sure, have at it with the negative reviews, but I just don't see the problem here.

It's tremendously clear that a lot of thought and heart and consideration has been put into this game from every angle, and even with the balance issues and placeholder images, i would still play this over most games that are >= 1.0

Putting aside - what many others already said - that this version offers less than the demo, there is still an insane amount of placeholders, and lot of QOL is simply missing.

What does this gun do? What can I put in this slot? What exactly does this vehicle do and what can it carry? Who knows. It feel like 50% of items are missing any description, let alone the little lore text (which are generally very fun to read).

Difficulty is all over the place. You will absolutely breeze through any mission and then get thrown a curve-ball of multiple APCs, heavy troops, and a few guys that can take you out with a single shot. Not saying this is bad but some build-up to that would be nice.

The core of the game is fun and nice, but it's just missing a lot.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI really enjoyed the demo and was really looking forward to the early access release but i have to say i am greatly disappointed. This early access version feels like a downgrade to the demo in so many ways.

First, some good things.

The story content is good. It keeps up the good writing and i like the setting of building yourself up from nothing. But there is so little of it added that it's a minor positive.

Second, the new music is good. Not much to say about it, just really solid music fitting the game.


The enemy AI improvement is good. Enemies don't just run up to you and dive on to the ground to be executed anymore. That's good. Also i have noticed more enemies permanently running away from you if you are laying down heavy fire upon them. I think that is a really fitting enemy behavior especially for some more less trained and motivated enemies like the corvids.


Removing the other rigs is going to be essentially my biggest complaint. In the demo with the starter 20 health you were vulnerable and you felt it, but you still had some fighting chance and it didn't feel like you were made out of wet tissue paper. But in the EA version you die so fast with just 20 health. I have been fighting enemies taking things slow and then a weak enemy with just a pistol kills me in 3 hits. Making the player so vulnerable to even the weakest weapons the enemies have absolutely ruined the game for me. The balance has been thrown out of the window. And the same applies to the vehicles. Your guns do little to no damage to vehicles let alone armored ones, but a couple of cops with pistols are able to take 30% of your vehicles health when you drive by them.


I really hope the other rigs are added back very soon or the damage of enemies are toned down. It currently is just a very unfun experience for me, coming from someone who played the demo for 30+ hours. I am sad to say this but i am greatly disappointed with the EA release and i regret spending money on this early access release and i strongly recommend that you don’t buy this. Just play the demo, it is way better currently.

As negative as this sounds i am still looking forward to future updates and changing my review to positive when this paid version gets better and i do hope and believe that the devs can deliver a good game. Probably going to take some time though so patience is key.\t\t\t\t\t

As it stands i really dislike it.
Mainly because you can get one shot or difficulty can spike in a fraction of a second. Some scenarios this is a welcomed challenge, but often it just leads to frustration.
People complaining about the intro i understand, but i love the zero to hero ♥♥♥♥, and oddly was one of my favorite parts of the experience. I was weak, now im slightly less weak.... And its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ noticeable... But no chance against a tank still.

But the real issue as it stands, there is not remotely enough content. Not in any reasonable sense. I have this many hours because i like the grind and also in an attempt to get some armor or a tank, maybe a mech? Nope, i dont even think its in the game yet.

\n\t\t\t\t\tIn good conscience, I cannot recommend this game to anyone at its current state, not even to Brigador fans.

For some strange reason, the early access version has less content in it than the demo. A couple of missions have been cut. You can no longer craft containers. You cannot craft a grav tank, a mongoose or a light mech from the demo. You cannot access the big fat vendor that sold basically anything for the credits, making credits kinda useless later on. A bunch of stuff from the Early Access trailer right here on the front page is also not present in the early access version. Garage mode has been integrated into the campaign instead of being a separate mode, which is a strange decision and might backfire alter down the line. Personally, I'd prefer if the sandbox/garage mode were separate.

Killers is a little bit too grindy to my tastes and leans into inventory system and itemization that is a strange mix of Diablo 2 and extraction shooters. That is fine and I get it, this game doesn't have to be a Brigador copy but bigger. In many ways BK is its own beast and I like that. I just hope there will be some kind of instant action mode down the line. Arcade fun of jumping into freelance missions with different loadouts is what I loved the most about the first game.

Some mechanics from the first game are not present. For example, you cannot destroy power stations and comm towers to prevent alarms. Enemies have a moral system, but all it does is making them run away, then come back a couple of seconds later. Despite your character being more fragile than at any point in the original Brigador, I felt like you are encouraged to be less tactical in Killers. You can also simply grind your way out of missions you're stuck on by repeating salvage missions.

The game has cool art direction, great atmosphere and aesthetics, stellar soundtrack and solid foundation to build upon. But in its current state, I'd recommend to just play the demo as it has more content, and wait for more updates for the Early Access version before buying.\t\t\t\t\t

The narrative campaign is wayyyyyyyy too short for this to be released as is. I was anticipating more content, only to be dropped into 'freeplay campaign' in a worse off position. Building up strength in this version is MUCH worse than the demo.

For now, hold off. The game has the atmosphere, the artwork, the music and the controls down. Actually playing AND enjoying the game? not quite there yet.

My message to the devs: you have got to work out the problem with one shot and losing so much progress. It is not fun or enjoyable to be clowned by low level enemies because one of them 'randomly' has a shotgun.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI am completely captivated by the genre shift in Brigador Killers.

I was so sure that this would be more levels of basically the same game as Brigador with the new player-as-pilot system they had been teasing as the main innovation, but after the first four levels... there is an intense shift in genre that is at once a completely new direction that may shock fans, yet also a natural conclusion of the Freelance mode from the first game.

In the first game's campaign, every mission was a self-contained resource management sandbox, but Freelance was supposed to be about managing those resources over (potentially) the entire campaign. It was clearly a cool idea, but the first game leaned on the arcade angle much to its benefit. With the level of depth that the first game had on a mechanical level, it just made more sense to craft every level as a bespoke, unique puzzle to be solved four very different ways with varying degrees of difficulty. A campaign-long Freelance run rewarded the player too much for just choosing a boring jack-of-all-trades loadout.

Brigador Killers returns to the idea posited by Freelance, and explores the new depth afforded by shifting the player from one vehicle to an individual guerilla capable of utilizing different vehicles as part of a persistent arsenal, Brigador Killers was going to take this immersive sim path since pretty early in development as far as I know, but it just so happens that uniting the thematic/plot thread of a guerilla campaign with the gameplay loop of a persistent arsenal shared between missions is helped along by the coincidence of a certain recent trend in game design more broadly.

The first time that you die and lose your weapons, it's jarring. Having to return to a previously completed level and actually focus on procuring weapons rather than pursuing an objective is a major departure from the first game, and the first four missions of this game. The negative reviews of Brigador Killers that I've seen so far all revolve around the whiplash that scraping around with nothing when so much of Brigador as a franchise is about the popcorn fantasy of just stomping on everything. There is an aspect of delayed gratification at play-- progression, one could say-- that was totally absent from the first game. In that sense, it legitimately might not be for some players. On the other hand, I think there are a lot of reasons to love it, even if you think that Brigador's formula was already perfect. This game is a different beast, but one that compliments the first game.

This change in core gameplay is an incredible example of ludonarrative resonance. The Brigadors were monsters who kicked Solo Nobre's teeth in when it was down, and the Anchor Unit are the opposite: scrappy guerillas punching up. On a gameplay level, whatever is lost in the shift from handcrafted puzzle sandboxes is gained in unprecedented player freedom. Brigador gave you four ways to solve each level, but Brigador Killers gives you a practically infinite buffet of solutions for you to prepare and implement. The immersive sim DNA keeps the build-up from feeling like grinding or farming, while the arcade elements keep it from getting too much like work. There are some moments where the progression has growing pains: when the levels start getting harder, you start wanting for certain resources, and the bottlenecks start feeling a little oppressive-- and then the progression lifts that weight off your shoulders.

Let me give a concrete example. First, let me be upfront: the sewer section seems really frustrating if you're under the impression that's the whole rest of the game. It is not! The resource scarcity that you run up against like a brick wall after the first four introductory missions quickly begins to ease up. In the first few missions after leaving the sewers, you'll start to want for bandages, and you'll realize that scavenging for the raw materials to make them is pretty inefficient on the first few levels. There isn't enough scrap to make the things you want. The enemies start getting too strong to take on with the armory of guns you have access to. Then, you get access to vehicles, and suddenly you can scrap a car you drive out of a level for like 10 or 20 bandages, and enemy infantry begins to present less of a challenge as you bounce them off the bumper of your panel van.

It sounds a little ridiculous, but you have to trust Stellar Jockeys. The developers know what they're doing, and to the extent that this shift in gameplay chafes, these are almost certainly issues that are going to be solved as the game chugs out of early access. That's the other thing to keep in mind--

What we have access to here is not a finished product. Let me remind you that Brigador, even when it launched, was not the near-perfect gem that it Up-Armored is. I'll say that it remains to be seen if Brigador Killers is a second strike of lightning, but what's here is at least as good as other indie offerings at the moment. A lesser studio what be satisfied with the core gameplay loop that this version of the game establishes. The demo-but-more would also have been an acceptable sequel to Brigador! But the beauty is that Brigador Killers plans to be so much more, uniting a completely new open-ended gameplay system with an expansive, deep campaign that recaptures some of the handcrafted charm of the original level design. It's just a little unfortunate, especially for some fans of the original, that the emphasis in this build is on the former ambition.\t\t\t\t\t

The demo had me excited to dive into this only to release with every issue and complaint brought up in the demo dialed up to 10. I love brigador, I loved the demo and it had me hyped beyond belief. I hoped I'd get to a stage in the game where the freedom would open only to be missing complete vehicle types the demo had present.

This game CAN be great, the demo was great. I hope in time the devs can come to understand why the demo was great and had people excited, and why this doesn't. Changes need to be made.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI really, really wanted to like Brigador Killers. Original Brigador was fun and my least favorite part of that was wishing there was more of a rags-to-riches pace and story. Killers seemed poised to deliver on that, and on the undersung brilliance of a mech game where you can get out of the cockpit.

I did not play the demo so I can’t speak to the comparison. I played the EA the day it came out and most days since.

Instead, we have a sliver of story that ended abruptly, a main character who gets ended abruptly, a UI that is both central to everything and quite confusing, and a level of challenge that feels almost appropriate, except for how it is just not… fun.

I love challenging games, and I was looking forward to this being a punishing experience, especially early. But getting killed usually feels like bad luck or an enemy randomly doing 10x more damage than all the other identical enemies I just beat. It feels like the lesson learned is usually that I should have played in a slower and less fun way, or should have spent less time looting my well-earned rewards from a fight. It’s a game that seems like it should encourage experimentation and creativity, but that creative spirit is immediately snuffed out by short ttk and the threat of losing all your stuff.

My favorite portion of the EA was the early levels, where you get some well-delivered story and then creep around throwing cinderblocks at corvids. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed these tense but low-firepower encounters, from Brigador of all games. Creeping up through crappy guns with no ammo all the way to taking on a dozen goons with an armored forklift and two shotguns felt, for a brief moment, like everything I was hoping for. I picked the battlefield clean, found some cool new guns, and then with the exit in sight, one guy comes up from the edge of the screen, 50-0's the forklift with one shot and kills me with the second. None of the enemies I had encountered had shown this kind of damage. It didn't feel like I should have been more on my toes even after an apparent victory, it felt like an anticlimactic waste of time.

“Sprinting” with shift and then trying to open your inventory (say, trying to quickly bandage up in the middle of a fight) opens the steam menu which feels bad in the middle of a fight.

There are a lot of conceptually fun scrappy vehicles, but most of them feel useless. No hardpoints = no point. It feels like you should be able to use small guns from any vehicle. I have no interest in playing around with the multitude of VBIED options because creative risks don’t feel worth investing in.

I appreciate that the devs are using MS Paint temp assets instead of AI. The music is as good as you would expect, and the guns feel punchy. There is fun to be had, somewhere in there, but it’s underneath a lot more disappointment than I was expecting.

Ten years is a long wait for what we have now. We’ll see what they can pull out. As it stands, I don't feel much interest in finishing the EA missions. Dang it. Best of luck, guys.\t\t\t\t\t

Before I get into anything, I just want to preface that this review is intended to be read with the context that the game in question is Early Access... not just any Early Access either, like right out of the gate, I bought this on day one and it's now four days later. If you're reading this two years down the line and I haven't changed the review yet due to a mixture of laziness and procrastination, then only some of the information may be pertinent but by and large you should probably just ignore the whole review. Now that all being said, let's get this s***show on the road:

⬥Calm Before The Storm⬥
Stellar Jockey's released Brigador prior to this, which became a hit success and cult classic (wasn't always that way, but I'll get into that later) - boosted by several gaming "influencers" (god I hate that word) and content creators such as MandaloreGaming. It was a mech game (though even that's inaccurate since you could drive tanks, power suits, and agrav vehicles) set to the backdrop of an awesome sci-fi setting and a b****in' soundtrack. You were a mercenary being paid ludicrous amounts of money by Space Amazon to cause ludicrous amounts of destruction in Space Cuba after the people of the planet Novo Solo rose up, kicked out the corpos, and installed a socialist dictatorship (the state driven kind, not the AnCom kind) on the planet before closing the spaceports and pointing a bunch of BFG's at the sky to discourage the corporations from coming back. Then Great Leader died.

Brigador ended up becoming a hit and cult classic, and fans were begging for more. Stellar Jockeys decided they wanted to big with their next game, but a mech game where you can get out of your mech and have your own base of operations would require an almost complete re-design from top to bottom, at least as far as the engine goes. This is not an easy thing to do, a good example would be the development history of Starcraft after their alpha was, quite literally, laughed out of the room... but even 90's Blizzard was a much larger team with more money to burn.

After years of working away Stellar Jockey dropped the demo for Brigador Killers. Despite being rough around the edges as one should expect a beta to be, it was incredibly well received and they basically dropped a game on people's laps that players could, and would, easily dump 100 hours or more into... reiterating: for free (don't worry, you'll see where I'm going with this). The demo was received as wildly successful and people were waiting for the game with bated breath. But over yonder, a harsh wind was forming and sky was conjuring a gathering of some rather dark looking clouds.

⬥ The S**tstorm ⬥
The game drops Early Access and... why is it so much harder? Why is ammo economy so scarce? Where are my late game rigs and mechs? Why is the narrative so short? Why did Sharon take the kids? Wait, what? Anyways, there was obviously a lack of communication somewhere, whether that be on the part of the developers for not being clear - on the part of the players for not reading anything the devs put out - or a mixture of both... but the folks who played the demo were NOT happy.

The game had a slower start and it took a little longer to truly build up an armory (which I don't mind at all, I feel like having to work for things is a good thing. Something that is just given with ease feels... unrewarding?) some of the more powerful vehicles were straight up gone (but not forgotten, we'll get to that), levels were either repurposed or switched out, and more. The game released, people sunk their teeth in it - and that's how we arrived at the current "Mixed" review rating on Steam. So what the hell happened?

I, personally, believe this all to be a result of miscommunication - on behalf of both the developers and the players. I know this might get pushback, but a lot of players played the free demo, built expectations that everything would be more or less the same in the full release just plus polishing and more content, and proceeded with that. What I feel like a lot of people missed is that the demo was more like a demo + an open beta combined, Stellar Jockey's was trying to learn from past mistakes so they wanted to keep an open line of communication with players this time WHILE developing the game, instead of having it come out and then scramble to fix.

Furthermore, I feel like if you asked ten different people what "Early Access" meant and what it was supposed to be, you would get ten different answers. Probably because EA as a concept has been used and abused to hell and back by developers in the past, both Triple A and Indie. But let's address some of the points from the standpoint of someone who has kept up to date with devlogs and the such;

- No, the devs aren't "removing content for the paid version" in the way people are saying they are. A lot of high end, late tier things were removed because BK doesn't really *have* a late game yet, it's Early Access. Most if not all of those things will make their return + more that wasn't seen in the demo once the devs hit that stage of development. People however are making it sound like the devs are maliciously removing content, this is false.
- The demo was never, ever, meant to be "the game". The demo was the devs taking what they had done up to this point, building a sandbox, throwing all their toys in the sandbox, and then dropping you in there and letting you go nuts. Meanwhile, while you were having fun, they could examine playstyles and player feedback to tweak the actual game.
- The game is not done, it's meant to be a representation of the full game up to the point that they've yet developed and feel comfortable releasing. It probably due to the demo, but a lot of people seemed to think they were buying a near-complete product. Buying Early Access is essentially a form of pre-ordering where you also get access to early builds of the game.

To re-iterate quickly: no, the devs are not maliciously removing content to never add it back. The demo was also never meant to be completely representative of the full game experience - it was meant to be a sandbox, a "here's what we've done, here's what we built. Go wild". Yes, the demo had a lot of effort put in to it to make it actually play like a, y'know, game, rather than just a straight up sandbox - but are honestly going to fault SJ for putting too much effort into the demo?

⬥ Doomed To Repeat ⬥
Wanna know something funny? This has happened once already before. WITH Brigador (the very same game most people here played and fell in love with). SJ put out a trailer from Brigador, and when people watched that trailer they got the idea that it would be a twin stick shooter. They bought the game on release annnd... negative reviews and refunds followed within the next few days. Despite the fact that SJ didn't really do anything wrong here (nothing in that trailer was false advertising, everything you saw was in the game) they spent years course correcting, adding more content (no paid DLC beyond the book/soundtrack), and released a massive free content update to the game which became Up-Armored Edition.

⬥ Look, I know we've all been burned by Early Access before... ⬥
And I know this review might seem like I'm just some kind of fanboy, but the fact that something along these lines has happened before - and SJ is one of the few companies that has proved themselves trustworthy.

⬥ Yeah that's all really nice and everything but what about dah game? ⬥
What? Oh yeh. Yeah the game is f**king great, A-f**king plus. I'd 100% recommend it but if you want to be wary and that is completely understandable, maybe give it four-six months to let it cook and then see where it stands.

But my personal opinion? Easy recommend, even in it's EA state. Should things change drastically, or the game hits 1.0, I will come back and change my review to reflect it (hopefully).\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tThe game had a rough launch. A lot of misunderstandings between players and developers made the process of learning the game much rougher than it needed to be. So I played it for a bit, set it down way faster than I had the demo, and looked elsewhere. The game was more tedious than fun, and didn't always feel worth engaging with.

I come back to find a giant post explaining all the things they've changed and adjusted based on that feedback. It's exactly what you would hope for from a developer of a game in progress.

This is much more in-line with the "insurgency simulator" the developers first pitched, and I can't wait to see more of it. It's great fun to squeak through the reinforcements back to base with a haul of loot that further expands your gameplay options, and it feels infinitely more fair this time when you go down. Still mixed on losing your equipment on death, but you can always alt-f4 at the "you died" screen if you don't like that aspect.

I love its gunplay, the customization of vehicles, the setting and world it's built in. But as it stands, the release of Brigador Killers is a complete travesty. No one should've looked at this and said "This is going to be our EA release at full price." No one. It's a good game, and I have no doubt that after the development cycle is done it will become good. But I do not think you should buy this game at full price, or at all really, until it is finished.

The beginning of the game is slow, and some would say frustrating but I did really enjoy the extremely scrappy brawls and nail biting escapes that it made. That is what I like to see, and I hope they keep it that way without making it too difficult.

But it's the middle that really gets me. Or rather, the end which is probably going to be the middle of the game when its finished. The spikes in difficulty are insane. The terror missions are slogs to get through (but fun once you get a vehicle) and the final mission is a difficulty spike unlike anything I have ever seen in a game.

tl;dr It sucks really. I love it to bits, but it kinda sucks. I hope, and I do believe, it will cease to suck in a year or two. But a year or two is a long wait. Do not buy the game until then.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tEdit: Followup, finally beat the Rounder mission using a VBIED after about 20 or 30 tries. I gotta be missing the "intended" way to complete this mission, my method relies on AI randomness way too much to feel intended.

Again when I think "terrorism simulator" I think of the NOD campaigns from the C&C games. Use an IED to blow a hole in a military fortress, storm the fortress fighting through hordes of goons using distraction and subterfuge to lure the majority of the forces away from my objective. Assassinate a critical military target and steal an experimental weapon for use in the next raid. I can tell the developers GET what this should feel like from the first 5 "prologue" missions, and these are by far the best missions in the game- They nail that "feel." It's just confusing to me that so much effort has been put into content that feels nothing like this. Maybe they're laying groundwork, maybe I just need to let them cook- It just seems like an odd choice to release into early access with only 5 missions out of maybe 35 that make me FEEL like a high-profile, heavily-armed insurgent plunging a world into chaos.

I'm looking forward to future updates from the developers but I maintain what I said in my original review. The game feels incomplete and lacking in content for the pricetag. You're essentially pre-ordering if you buy right now, hoping that the end-product will be high quality. Don't expect anything close to a finished game now.

I do want to leave my positive notes so you can see if you'd like playing this game in its current state. I don't hate this game, I was just perhaps expecting a bit more from an EA release. Maybe that's on me.

- 8-24 hours of content depending on how fast you play and how much you experiment, which is high-quality and enjoyable but definitely and clearly in-alpha.
- The available narrative missions (10ish, maybe a little over) are a great hook and leave you wanting more. As with the previous game, Stellar Jockeys have a solid writer's room and the game nails "the vibe." Think Ghost in the Shell- The game makes you feel immersed immediately in the world, without hitting you over the head with cutscenes and excessive exposition. There are 2-3 really good narrative hooks in the first hour or two of gameplay and I'm looking forward to seeing where they go.
- Balance issues with specific missions, but the majority of them are fun.
- The gameplay loop is the primary hook right now. It DOES feel good to loot and shoot your way through a mission hunting for better weaposn and ammo to feed those weapons.

I understand this game has a cult following but I think it needs critique to grow. I also wouldn't recommend buying it in its current state.

As it stands, unless I'm missing some vision the developers have, the game over all feels like a step backwards compared to the demo. Maybe I'll change this opinion as I play it more.

I really enjoyed the narrative, I like where it's going, but it's hardly there. You legitimately start the first few levels of the game fighting the undercity scum of the game's world by throwing rocks and cinderblocks at them, and end the (first chapter of the) story shooting people with single-shot guns. The early combat feels very stilted and overly clunky at this stage.

I understand what this game is going for- It's a terrorism simulator, it's supposed to feel punishing and difficult and like you're always fighting David vs. Goliath.

And, this leads to my main criticism of the game- It has these weird, absurd difficulty walls (which were present in the demo, and have been exaggerated significantly for the main release for some reason), where you feel like you're fighting real guns with nerf guns, every few levels. I don't... Understand the motivation behind it.

Once you escape the "rock throwing" section of the game, you immediately get to upgrade to real, actual guns. And you rapidly steal your way from single-shot pistols to intermediate-caliber machineguns which trivialize pretty much every section of the game before that. Okay, cool, normal RPG progression.

Shortly after you acquire these machineguns, you encounter EXTREMELY heavy armor. The game literally steps you up from fighting a few APCs with the same machineguns to a 6 uparmored APCs, then the level after that, a tank which can destroy any vehicle you can possibly build at this point in a second or two from several screens away, surrounded by enemies which instantly stunlock you and suicide into you, also killing you in just a few hits.

It's just not particularly fun after a certain point. When I hear "terrorism simulator," I think, y'know, a game where you're fighting your way through lesser enemies to reach a vantage point and gain the upper hand. Luring enemies into IEDs and remotely detonated satchels or ambushes. I can understand the vision and motivation behind what this game is trying to be, but it feels like it's failing to realize that vision.

The trailers are selling this super chaotic vehicle gameplay, but the balance is so bad between what the levels present and what the player is given that you're either completely destroying the opposition or being completely destroyed by the opposition. It feels like the developers are trying to work within this open-mission framework where players can tackle whatever they want with whatever tools they want, and I can't help but feel this is the wrong choice because it yields these huge imbalances. There is never a negative consequence for bringing your best gear, and as a result in order to prevent players from just breezing through the game, the game starts presenting you with these impossibly difficult scenarios.

It just- It feels like it has an identity crisis. It carries so much of the original Brigador's identity- Small arenas with tactical vehicle fights- But then also wants you slogging through the trenches as a single footsoldier. I guess I feel like the original Brigador already achieved what this game is trying to achieve- That David vs. Goliath feel- And the choice to split the game between on-foot gameplay and vehicular combat just yields something that is unfocused and incoherent.

I want this game to be good, and it probably will be if the original Brigador is any indication. But I'm worried about the fact that the early access release just feels worse to play than the demo; like the game is headed in the wrong direction.\t\t\t\t\t

It just needs more content, some polishing, and QoL updates. Stick to the demo for now while it finishes baking.

Some criticism is fair, but the some of backlash is uncalled for. The dev team has proven they can deliver a banger, so everyone needs to relax and give them time. It still deserves a thumbs-up in my opinion.
