As it stands, unless I'm missing some vision the developers have, the game over all feels like a step backwards compared to the demo. Maybe I'll change this opinion as I play it more.
I really enjoyed the narrative, I like where it's going, but it's hardly there. You legitimately start the first few levels of the game fighting the undercity scum of the game's world by throwing rocks and cinderblocks at them, and end the (first chapter of the) story shooting people with single-shot guns. The early combat feels very stilted and overly clunky at this stage.
I understand what this game is going for- It's a terrorism simulator, it's supposed to feel punishing and difficult and like you're always fighting David vs. Goliath.
And, this leads to my main criticism of the game- It has these weird, absurd difficulty walls (which were present in the demo, and have been exaggerated significantly for the main release for some reason), where you feel like you're fighting real guns with nerf guns, every few levels. I don't... Understand the motivation behind it.
Once you escape the "rock throwing" section of the game, you immediately get to upgrade to real, actual guns. And you rapidly steal your way from single-shot pistols to intermediate-caliber machineguns which trivialize pretty much every section of the game before that. Okay, cool, normal RPG progression.
Shortly after you acquire these machineguns, you encounter EXTREMELY heavy armor. The game literally steps you up from fighting a few APCs with the same machineguns to a 6 uparmored APCs, then the level after that, a tank which can destroy any vehicle you can possibly build at this point in a second or two from several screens away, surrounded by enemies which instantly stunlock you and suicide into you, also killing you in just a few hits.
It's just not particularly fun after a certain point. When I hear "terrorism simulator," I think, y'know, a game where you're fighting your way through lesser enemies to reach a vantage point and gain the upper hand. Luring enemies into IEDs and remotely detonated satchels or ambushes. I can understand the vision and motivation behind what this game is trying to be, but it feels like it's failing to realize that vision.
The trailers are selling this super chaotic vehicle gameplay, but the balance is so bad between what the levels present and what the player is given that you're either completely destroying the opposition or being completely destroyed by the opposition. It feels like the developers are trying to work within this open-mission framework where players can tackle whatever they want with whatever tools they want, and I can't help but feel this is the wrong choice because it yields these huge imbalances. There is never a negative consequence for bringing your best gear, and as a result in order to prevent players from just breezing through the game, the game starts presenting you with these impossibly difficult scenarios.
It just- It feels like it has an identity crisis. It carries so much of the original Brigador's identity- Small arenas with tactical vehicle fights- But then also wants you slogging through the trenches as a single footsoldier. Brigador Killers is, so far, everything I wanted from their previous title. Destructive fun in a REALLY good looking isometric game with a bit of exploration and more story than on the previous title (which is pretty cool, so far). It's Blast Corps meets MechWarrior 3050 meets Jungle Strike meets Shadow Run (sorta).
The OST is absolutely insane. It's some of the best music ever to be in a video game, just pure EBM-stomp hits, one after another, so congrats to the OST team! Best EBM I've heard in the past decade.
If there is one downside about the E.A. as of now, it's the UI/UX. It's just not instinctive and some of it doesn't really make sense. Dragging items from a corpse/crate to the player's inventory is confusing for no reason. I'm having a hard time with it and it's a bit frustrating + it really doesn't match the game's beauty. The UI is messy and kind of bare-bone looking, it looks like a debug console menu that players should not be seeing. Even the dialogs screen doesn't fit the game. I would've personally liked something a bit more skeuomorphic to fit with the game's esthetics. But other than that: Brigador Killers is freakin' GREAT!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI really enjoyed the demo and was really looking forward to the early access release but i have to say i am greatly disappointed. This early access version feels like a downgrade to the demo in so many ways.
First, some good things.
The story content is good. It keeps up the good writing and i like the setting of building yourself up from nothing. But there is so little of it added that it's a minor positive.
Second, the new music is good. Not much to say about it, just really solid music fitting the game.
The enemy AI improvement is good. Enemies don't just run up to you and dive on to the ground to be executed anymore. That's good. Also i have noticed more enemies permanently running away from you if you are laying down heavy fire upon them. I think that is a really fitting enemy behavior especially for some more less trained and motivated enemies like the corvids.
Removing the other rigs is going to be essentially my biggest complaint. In the demo with the starter 20 health you were vulnerable and you felt it, but you still had some fighting chance and it didn't feel like you were made out of wet tissue paper. But in the EA version you die so fast with just 20 health. I have been fighting enemies taking things slow and then a weak enemy with just a pistol kills me in 3 hits. Making the player so vulnerable to even the weakest weapons the enemies have absolutely ruined the game for me. The balance has been thrown out of the window. And the same applies to the vehicles. Your guns do little to no damage to vehicles let alone armored ones, but a couple of cops with pistols are able to take 30% of your vehicles health when you drive by them.
I really hope the other rigs are added back very soon or the damage of enemies are toned down. It currently is just a very unfun experience for me, coming from someone who played the demo for 30+ hours. I am sad to say this but i am greatly disappointed with the EA release and i regret spending money on this early access release and i strongly recommend that you don’t buy this. Just play the demo, it is way better currently.

So far, the game's violence is smaller scale than the original, but having put sixty hours or so into the demo, I know it will lead to the larger city-wide destruction that fans have come to anticipate.
The story is, so far, peacemeal - scant. I intuit that it relies on a familiarity with the non-video game material (two books, I believe). This doesn't really bother me, characters make frequent references to events from these books, but you get the jist of it on your own. I put 37 hours into the demo. I couldn't get enough. The aesthetics, vehicles, gunplay, destruction, sound design, OST, gritty ambience, and most of all the gameplay loop. It scratched an itch for me that hadn't been scratched since the glory days of Syndicate and GTA1/2. The fight -> scavenge -> fight -> extract -> upgrade & progress loop was addicting and satisfying.
Now I find myself with 14 hours played in the EA release and I'm finished with all the available content. Sinkhole cleared, garage fully upgraded and stocked with the best vics available. Armory bursting with weapons, the coolest of which I cannot even use because the mechs/tanks/gravs that I grew to love in the demo are not present. There's no incentive to keep playing. There's nothing else to grind, nothing else to explore, and nothing else to progress towards.
The demo has more content then the paid release. That should never be the case. The added narrative content was decent but very brief, and now the sandbox content has been absolutely gutted comparatively.
I wouldn't recommend buying in its current state. You're better off playing the demo until the game is way more fleshed out. Honestly I regret my purchase. I should have done what I always do and forgot about the game until it was out of early access - patience is the best asset a gamer can have nowadays, but with how much I loved the previous title and enjoyed the demo I wanted to give the devs the benefit of the doubt. I was so sure that this would be more levels of basically the same game as Brigador with the new player-as-pilot system they had been teasing as the main innovation, but after the first four levels... there is an intense shift in genre that is at once a completely new direction that may shock fans, yet also a natural conclusion of the Freelance mode from the first game.
In the first game's campaign, every mission was a self-contained resource management sandbox, but Freelance was supposed to be about managing those resources over (potentially) the entire campaign. It was clearly a cool idea, but the first game leaned on the arcade angle much to its benefit. With the level of depth that the first game had on a mechanical level, it just made more sense to craft every level as a bespoke, unique puzzle to be solved four very different ways with varying degrees of difficulty. A campaign-long Freelance run rewarded the player too much for just choosing a boring jack-of-all-trades loadout.
Brigador Killers returns to the idea posited by Freelance, and explores the new depth afforded by shifting the player from one vehicle to an individual guerilla capable of utilizing different vehicles as part of a persistent arsenal, Brigador Killers was going to take this immersive sim path since pretty early in development as far as I know, but it just so happens that uniting the thematic/plot thread of a guerilla campaign with the gameplay loop of a persistent arsenal shared between missions is helped along by the coincidence of a certain recent trend in game design more broadly.
The first time that you die and lose your weapons, it's jarring. Having to return to a previously completed level and actually focus on procuring weapons rather than pursuing an objective is a major departure from the first game, and the first four missions of this game. The negative reviews of Brigador Killers that I've seen so far all revolve around the whiplash that scraping around with nothing when so much of Brigador as a franchise is about the popcorn fantasy of just stomping on everything. There is an aspect of delayed gratification at play-- progression, one could say-- that was totally absent from the first game. In that sense, it legitimately might not be for some players. On the other hand, I think there are a lot of reasons to love it, even if you think that Brigador's formula was already perfect. This game is a different beast, but one that compliments the first game.
This change in core gameplay is an incredible example of ludonarrative resonance. The Brigadors were monsters who kicked Solo Nobre's teeth in when it was down, and the Anchor Unit are the opposite: scrappy guerillas punching up. On a gameplay level, whatever is lost in the shift from handcrafted puzzle sandboxes is gained in unprecedented player freedom. Brigador gave you four ways to solve each level, but Brigador Killers gives you a practically infinite buffet of solutions for you to prepare and implement. The immersive sim DNA keeps the build-up from feeling like grinding or farming, while the arcade elements keep it from getting too much like work. There are some moments where the progression has growing pains: when the levels start getting harder, you start wanting for certain resources, and the bottlenecks start feeling a little oppressive-- and then the progression lifts that weight off your shoulders.
Let me give a concrete example. First, let me be upfront: the sewer section seems really frustrating if you're under the impression that's the whole rest of the game. It is not! The resource scarcity that you run up against like a brick wall after the first four introductory missions quickly begins to ease up. In the first few missions after leaving the sewers, you'll start to want for bandages, and you'll realize that scavenging for the raw materials to make them is pretty inefficient on the first few levels. There isn't enough scrap to make the things you want. The enemies start getting too strong to take on with the armory of guns you have access to. Then, you get access to vehicles, and suddenly you can scrap a car you drive out of a level for like 10 or 20 bandages, and enemy infantry begins to present less of a challenge as you bounce them off the bumper of your panel van.
It sounds a little ridiculous, but you have to trust Stellar Jockeys. The developers know what they're doing, and to the extent that this shift in gameplay chafes, these are almost certainly issues that are going to be solved as the game chugs out of early access. That's the other thing to keep in mind--
What we have access to here is not a finished product. Let me remind you that Brigador, even when it launched, was not the near-perfect gem that it Up-Armored is. I'll say that it remains to be seen if Brigador Killers is a second strike of lightning, but what's here is at least as good as other indie offerings at the moment. A lesser studio what be satisfied with the core gameplay loop that this version of the game establishes. The demo-but-more would also have been an acceptable sequel to Brigador! But the beauty is that Brigador Killers plans to be so much more, uniting a completely new open-ended gameplay system with an expansive, deep campaign that recaptures some of the handcrafted charm of the original level design. It's just a little unfortunate, especially for some fans of the original, that the emphasis in this build is on the former ambition.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The first few levels are painfully long and tedious—you're stuck in a gloomy underground throwing rocks at enemies. After finally slogging through that boring early section and getting to use actual guns, the difficulty becomes wildly unbalanced, with sudden brick-wall levels popping up out of nowhere, like those two survival missions. Whether it's the tutorials, the gameplay, or the difficulty curve, it's all inferior to the demo in every way. I genuinely had a great time with the demo, but this is just way too disappointing.

Edit, if you get past the 4 first missions you play as an unarmored guy, when you sprint full speed into a wall it kills you instantly. not sure why.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The opening to the game is terrible, like actual hot garbage. I didn't play the demo but I believe everyone who says it was better, because it's a dumpster fire. The gameplay parts of it extremely boring and disjointed from what I expected from all the trailers and promotional material.
So as an example, at first you're assassinating some Brigadors and it serves as a tutorial for the game, which upon its completion heel-turns and immediately gives you a ♥♥♥♥-show of a setup where you throw rocks and eventually get guns which do less damage than ... kicking people. Which you will run out of ammo for quickly... meaning repeating missions just running around to get ammo is a thing.
Like, same layout, same everything, just go do that boring nothingburger mission again to get some ammo and don't you dare get in a fight or you'll leave with less ammo than you started with.
I have no idea what the devs are smoking here but the balance for this game and the experience of it is just straight up not enjoyable... you made your game look awesome, gave it a cool soundtrack, but forgot it's supposed to be fun?

Comparing to the demo, the newly added undercity part is a real pain in the ass, dull, dark, and dumb. You have to go through all these tedious stages to reach the sanbox mode, albeit an unfinished one. AAAAnd still no way to unload a gun, srsly? The "buffed" ai is glitched, stumbling and jerking all the time.

You have to go through all these tedious stages to reach the sanbox mode, albeit an unfinished one. AAAAnd still no way to unload a gun, srsly? The "buffed" ai is glitched, stumbling and jerking all the time.

Do not buy this unless you are *genuinely* willing to play a version of this game that is grating at every step, it is actively worse than the free demo. Quality of loot has been *SIGNIFICANTLY* reduced while enemy numbers, accuracy, and aggression have been tuned up, so expect to be mag-dumping your weapon that either does so little damage it requires a mag to kill or has such poor accuracy that unless you're crouching and within twenty feet of them it'll miss half it's shots, and you then have to repeat that until a dozen enemies have rushed toward you and expect to be rerunning missions in the hopes that something better than a starter pistol or the basic shotgun you got immediately during the demo *might* drop.
There was some expectation that QoL changes would be made from the demo to early access and that really hasn't been the case. Vendors still exist largely in weird states, requiring you to traverse levels just to look at what they have (much of which is missing descriptions so if you don't remember what these items are from using them in the demo, you'll have to buy them just to learn what they even are, what ammo they use, so on and so forth. ) or clear out every enemy from a level just to find out they sell garbage.
The UI has not improved at all, there seem to be just as many place holders as the demo, many of the weapons and items in it are still just MS Paint text, and the descriptions on so many things aren't written either so you'll get very little info on what you're picking up.
There's also no brightness setting at all, for someone like me with a monitor that is fairly dark by default and has no on-board controls to adjust brightness, I always have to rely on games to make things more visible, that's not an option here which means the early levels are genuinely unpleasant to go through as even with the flashlight much of the levels were barely visible.
Spawns have not improved, there were at least two separate missions where I had a map I thought was cleared only to suddenly have a dozen armored cops literally pop up from off screen and instantly zero my health. Things are harder but not in a way that feels like it's fair and that exposes the jank significantly more than the demo did, it's done in a way that you'll play through a dozen levels only to have your best gun be the same one you started with and now you're fighting enemies that even if you loot the automatic off of one you mag dumped at point blank their accuracy is better than yours and they have armor that lets them tank nine hits while their buddies run up to beat the snot out of you because moving, shooting, and having shots land is something they're allowed to do but not you.
There will be random insane difficulty spikes and no indications that they're coming, expect to enter a level that feels like a joke where you can get through with little effort using a crummy little pistol only to then have every cop on the planet suddenly barreling down on you in the next one with no indication as to when it will end.
There is no real sense of progression as levels don't have consistent difficulty or drops, and what little info you get from descriptions all basically tell you the same thing, whatever is coming is going to be rough, but when every single level indicates that and half of them are a slog that is at least doable with the low quality loot, the other half are instant annihilation by automatics at the edge of your screen that you had no chance of doing anything about unless you got lucky and looted anything that isn't at best an MP5 knockoff that at the best of times knocks over the cops and proceeds to make it harder for you to hit them as a result.
The game does an incredibly poor job of explaining its intentions and how to navigate the jank and poor progression because it doesn't explain anything. You are expected to treat this as an extraction shooter, except you will have zero idea of whether a level is high difficulty, if it can even have decent rewards, or when you should try to progress. If you went from the previous game to this one you would probably be completely and entirely lost at how it went from fully linear progression of missions in its campaign always giving you exactly appropriate tools and freeform unlocks for its contract mode, to absolutely confused at a campaign that is quite literally starting with you having to throw rocks at people and ending with your best weapon most likely being a pistol that drops off of regular cops in the demo, and then the more free form mode where you never have any idea if you're appropriately geared, nor do you even have any clue what progression looks like. For example, the demo had alternate suits to help you survive since the starter suit allows you to survive at best the weakest enemies in the game armed with .22 long rifle pieces of junk they can barely operate, this version does not make it clear whether any better suits even exist or when you'll get them, and the level that made me decide to stop playing was one in which it felt like I should have had one as armored cops that ate half the mag of the knockoff MP5 proceeded to come at me for seven minutes without any indication as to whether I needed to just be evading them and focusing on time or if there was some amount of them I needed to kill, but it ultimately didn't matter because I hadn't managed to get ahold of a weapon that could deal with a dozen of them visibly spawning at a corner.
The demo had some polish to it, and could even be pretty fun at times which may have given the idea that this would be an improvement as it had more time to cook and presumably more features / content, this is VERY MUCH early access and is NOT GOOD. Absolutely DO NOT get it unless you are willing to deal with unrewarding grinding through unbalanced jank. I love Brigador and it really is the perfect medium, with intensely challenging later levels/options and a genuinely accessible set of main story levels and loadout options. This game is like getting kicked in the nuts over and over which is just a terrible contrast to the elegance of the original game.
More than anything else, I'm disappointed that one of my favorite settings - aesthetically, narratively, and politically - has been welded to a game that seems to actively despise me as a player. It's exhausting and I wish indie developers with a fantastic vision like this would try to remember that regular players don't have access to dev tools and don't play these games full time and thus cannot overcome these challenges as easily as the developer or testers\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

The economy and mission order comes together to make a game that is frequently frustrating, punishing and just not very fun to play. Which is absolutely wild, as Brigador is a masterpiece, and the demo for this showed incredbile promise. I fear the devs might have got a bit of playtester syndrome, where an entrenched group of players have mastered the game and keep asking for it to be harder and more complex. It's just not fun using the tools you have to tackle the problems you are given - all the chaos and joy of the trailer (and the demo!) is replaced with gruelling, miserable missions where you crawl around maps pulling singular bullets and bags of chips off enemies, get hit, and lose all your stuff. Progression isn't satisfying - there is a very small range of usable, effective weaponry and the upgunned vehicles you get access to arrive too late to be useful. The campaign has a great story but, after a kinectic, thrilling four mission opener that gives you a sampling platter of everything the game has to offer, kicks you into throwing rocks at people underground. It's slow, boring and not a good example of what Brigador does best. Enemy variety is awful - comp[ared to the readability of a Brigador encounter, where the mix of vehicles and mechs in a group all lead to dynamic, evolving challenges and a high level of readbility, Killers throws mobs of blurry little guys at you with nondescript guns, who you deal with in mostly the same way. There's some wonderful lore here, but like the rest of the game it feels broadly sketched out with a few quality deep dives that unfortunately don't currently add up to much.
This is an incredibly ambitious and admirable project by the devs, and I hope they put some new and inexperienced players through the mission flow to get some feedback. I can't recommend the game in its current state but the demo provides everything good here and more, and is free. Pop this on your wishlist, enjoy the soundtrack, and hope that the next few years see this game hit its potential.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It's early access so I can forgive the odd bit of placeholder art, New bugs are going to happen with a broad release. The story isn't all there. This is all fine.
What is leaving me dissapointed is how frustrating everything feels. There's no pay off. There's no vehicle combat over an entire suburb. No stompy mechs in the stompy mech game?
There's no moment that satisfies the itch of pulling off an incredible run in Solo Nobre.
Brigador always made you feel like you pulled something off. Dying made me want to dive back in. Slam that restart. Let's go again Solo Nobre. BK doesn't
I love the idea of infantry, it's really cool and opens some great ADDITIONAL gameplay- but surely the vehicle combat is the main thrust of the game? The way the game works is obviously very hard to get right when you scale everything down from giant tanks to dudes and its utterly baffling why this is the 'main mode' for the EA.
The infantry just... kinda doesn't work right now. You die incredibly fast, the lack of weapon feedback is less important when you can see a railgun obliterating a city block, but when you're shooting a handgun you have no idea if you're missing, shooting into a wall, the weapon is innacurate, the enemy is tanking it etc. So when you die it feels ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, Losing your stuff is a fine mechanic that I don't hate - but the kinda janky inventory and having to walk around your base clicking on stuff and dragging and dropping things from the floor etc just sucks any momentum out of the session. This would be mitigated if you had stuff to choose from but now it is further sucking momentum by having to run a salvage mission 8 times,
I have read the Devs reasons for locking all of the bits of Brigador people enjoyed away and I honestly can't understand it. Let people wipe or be overlevelled. Brigador gave you so much freedom, Locking people into what feels like it should be part of the game but not the actual game itself is a strange choice. It's EA it's not the finished product - why make it a less complete product?
