The early game seems pretty balanced. the progression feels good. exploration is fun and exciting. but once you hit mid to late game, its abysmal. Oh whats that, you just spent the last 20 hours preparing yourself for the plains? whats that? youve upgraded all your gear to the best gear you can have and have eaten the best foods you can get? oh, well that doesnt matter since a single 1 star fuling can one shot you. oh, and since you died all your good stuff in on that corpse so good luck not getting killed again since your health is tied to the foods you eat. not to mention the skill levels you lose when you die. whats that? it takes hours to raise your skills up? oh, but it takes just one hit to undo 3 hours of work...
Dont even get me started with the ashlands and how many mobs spawn in. its just stupidly difficult.
Suffice to say, this game really needs balancing for mid to late game. Sure, am I playing in the more harder difficulties? Yeah. But should the difficulty be this extreme? absolutely not.
This game could really use some QoL updates as well. I mean, the limited inventory space kills you. once you get to mid game, 60% of your inventory is taken up by just your gear. Proxy craft would also be a warm welcome. I think in the modern age of survival fantasy games, proxy craft should be standard. Or, at the very least, let us pin the recipe.
I do want to love this game, but I feel like this game has been left behind by many other games out there.

The bosses make the progression linear while the open world gives a sense of freedom that other games fail to combine well. Sailing to new islands and travelling great distances is extremely satisfying. The atmosphere from the music/art design is really well done, I usually hate bloom and fancy graphics but this game does it in a way where it just fits.
Your options for progression feel endless with the skills you can level as well as the various choices you have for weapons. Combining the food system which allows you to control your HP/Stamina into it you can really focus on your specific niche playstyle.
Combat itself, while fairly simple, has mechanics around it that definitely require some skill from the player. This makes leveling skills feel really satisfying because you can feel the improvement as you play. The game is incredibly grindy with the world record speedrun taking 7h 52m 49s to complete (1h 24m 28s faster than the 2nd place run) and that time is achieved after hours of refining both mechanics and decision making skills. Needless to say, this game will take multiple days of playtime to defeat all of the bosses from a standard experience perspective.
My biggest gripe I have with the game is the building. Building is a lot of fun but can definitely feel limited, the structure stability system can be annoying and the snapping doesn't always work the way I would like it to. However, you can make some really satisfying builds and lose yourself in the atmosphere of the game.

Valheim offers some of the best atmosphere and building I have seen in almost any game, the ambience, the music, the exploration is truly wonderful. It is difficult yes, and you will die, but ultimately the game pushes you forward slowly but surely through each biome. The meadows start off strong with visually one of the best soundtracks in gaming, and the black forest makes for a quick change of environs to show you just how rich things can be. If you are lucky in the distance early on you will find a mountain with impassable cold, each detail for the world leading you onto the next.
It is a wonderful journey and discovering new items to build new things to make new weapons and armors and decorations is truly some of the best hours I have spent in gaming.
Ashlands is my favorite biome for all of these reasons. It takes everything above, the exploration, the vistas, the ambience, the joy of gearing up, and it wraps them all up nicely in a present with a neat little bow.
It then takes that present, and positions itself precariously above it, and you wonder what it could be doing with such joy. It then squashes it, the whole thing, and hands it too you.
Ashlands, contains nothing but broken fragments of the rest of the game, and its worst bits magnified. Combat is frustrating, not brutal. Exploration is tedious, not rewarding. Ambience is dead, not desolate. It is an ugly, awful, massively disappointing hellscape that masquerades as a battlefield biome, when in actuality it is about as deep as a roblox zombie wave fighting game. Not a single things does this biome do better than any of the others you experience, everything about it from start to finish is just purely the worst experiences in valheim.
There is no reward in overcoming it, there is no joy in exploring it, there is nothing about this biome that is redeemable. It ruins the rest of valheim by merely existing, in stark contrast to hours of a better game, and pretending to be somehow much more than that.
There will be people who will tell you on every post about it that its been nerfed, its easier, its simple. Those people are lying to you and themselves. They will tell you that it has amazing gear, that you need to use siege weapons, and that you shouldn't build bases in the ashlands, bring very little and do short excursions. They are all lying to you, and I will tell you the only thing you need to know about ashlands; there is one singular best weapon in the game for this biome and it is from the beginning of the game.
The Hoe. Dirt pillars is your big warfare tool, you need nothing else. No planning, strategy, no build optimizing or food buff will outweigh the usefulness of simply dirt pillaring your way through this biome.
"But why is ashlands your favorite biome?"

It shows me how much the views of the world matter, the small moments of exploration building little bases and campfires with friends, the travel to new lands and the cooking of food at home. At times, it can be INFURIATING. But, because of the struggle, you feel a strong sense of pride in your accomplishments and in your playing style. This game doesn't hold you by the hand. You will have to EARN your place in this world. That said, if you personally don't care for relentless combat, you can use the world modifiers and "devcommands" to build whatever your heart desires grind-free...and the build system in this game is super addictive and allows for immense creativity. There's something special about this game, and even though it makes me grind my teeth at times, I always come back.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

This became one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had.
Every biome feels like a completely new adventure. Just when you think you've seen everything, the game introduces new enemies, mechanics, resources (yes, grind is real lol), and reasons to explore one more island. It constantly rewards curiosity.
Our journey started with a tiny wooden shack and ended in the Ashlands, having every armor set, crafting every weapon variant, defeating every boss, building farms, taming 2-star animals, and celebrating our victory with fireworks around a giant bonfire.
But what I'll remember isn't just the bosses.
I'll remember hunting for a 2-star boar for hours... days... only to have bats wipe out the entire farm.
I'll remember how difficult it was to track down the 2-star wolf at night.
I'll remember finally getting a Surtling trophy after what felt like forever just to give Yagluth glowing eyes as decoration.
I'll remember the Queen being an absolute menace, and Ashlands turning every 10 meters outside our portal into a full-scale war.
I'll remember building a trophy hall, a vineyard, and even our little "Cupcake Corner" filled with food and potions.
The best thing about Valheim is that it creates stories.
Stories you'll laugh about weeks later.
Stories that only happen because the game gives you the freedom to create your own adventure.
The combat is tough sometimes, but fun.
The building system is fantastic.
The progression always feels rewarding.
The atmosphere is unmatched.
And somehow, after hundreds of hours, you still log in thinking:
"Let's just do one small thing today."
...and suddenly it's 3 AM.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tcrossplay is a setting but will destroy your server ip. tame wolves off your base continent? you have to build a new base around them because after like 6 years of having them in the game there is still no way to transport them long distances (they just jump off the boat and die). fantastic game but the qol is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you'll want to pop your eyes out with a spoon after a while.
