\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tValheim genuinely surprised me. I'm not a huge fan of open world survival crafting games. They're not really my thing and I don't find much enjoyment out of them, the only exception to me being Terraria. You can add Valheim to that list.
The game is very slow paced. But slow paced in a non-detrimental way I think. I'm only a mere 23 hours in and basically just now started crafting Bronze-level gear, if you want to know how truly "early" I am in this game. I can only realistically survive at the moment in the Meadows & Black Forest biomes, making the very, very first preparations to head into the Swamp next. The game's slow pace heavily encourages you to just simply explore your surroundings. Find abandoned villages or bases, make them your own. Slip into a dungeon or two. Kill some deer & boar, start with the basics, that sort of thing.
But there's genuinely one mechanic that makes this game far less punishing than say...Minecraft. And one I deeply appreciate, being that repairing your tools is free, provided you have the correct crafting station & level, and your tools don't disappear from your inventory when they break, meaning you can just repair them & keep going. You have no idea how much a simple part like this makes me want to stick around because I can just go back to my base, fix my items and keep going as if nothing ever happened. The one thing that genuinely makes me dislike open world survival crafting games is how punishing they are & how much micromanagement they require of the player. I get those who like that sort of thing, but it's usually just not for me.
The environmental design in this game is also gorgeous. Each biome is distinct in its own unique way, from the enemies you face, resources you can find & just the general atmosphere you find yourself in. I absolutely love the pixel-based style that this game has. It has a charm that scratches that PlayStation 1-era itch, so to speak. The soundtrack - atmospheric & relaxing most of the time. And this game has a Lithuanian translation (albeit not fully complete), which is also super, super cool. Very rare to see something like that in games and I appreciate it immensely.
The fact that the development team also took their time in optimizing the game, as well as making a native Linux version is an insanely huge plus. Linux gamers like me have a genuinely great port of the game to enjoy.
Even in early access, the game feels very complete. I'd say it's worth the price tag. I'm not sure how much the price will increase when it leaves early access, but even then I'd still say this game is worth it.
If you have 1 or 2 friends to play with, the game becomes even better as a social game. But even in solo I think you'll find plenty to enjoy here. If someone like me, who doesn't even like open world survival crafting games, can find genuine enjoyment and value in this game, I think you can too.

Iron Gate remails incompetent, just lazy. In the time this game has been in just early access, 5 years you can see so many other games and peer level developers relapsing updates and full fledged finished games. I beleive Valheim released and the developer wasn't ready and didn't have a clear vision. As of this review, Ashland's was released 2 years ago and there have been no content updates since then, since 2021 basically they added 2 biomes and a few cosmetics. Many he game continues to lack in features and time schedule. The game is largely unfinished without mods and I know, the development team has pocketed the money, sits and talks instead of walks.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

That being said, This wouldn't be a bad thing if any of the mechanics or biomes had depth but...they don't, at all. after YEARS of early access they still decide that extending the end game content is the top priority when ship sailing, dungeon delving, and exploration have BARELY any mechanical depth and are simply unfun once you've discovered everything once.
The community definitely has something to do with my distain as the amount of "Game actually has X hours of content" comments irritate me because they always insinuate this game is masterfully crafted and infinity repayable when in reality most of what causes the massive playtimes are what I stated earlier.
Most of all It irritates me that they are obviously stretching out development as long as possible and using the excuse of "we want everything to be meaningful and ready for release" when there is essentially no output that's supporting this AT ALL. the initial roadmap was super promising and essentially listed out things that would fix all my issues with the game and instead they scrapped it and went to this system of one major "content" update every 1 1/2 years that just slaps another biome at the end of the progression chain that the VAST majority of players wont reach because the games issues and lack of depth becomes apparent before they even REACH the mist-lands or ash-lands.
Its especially tragic because almost EVERYBODY thought this would be THE survival game when it first released. So again LET ME BE CLEAR I'm not saying the game is BAD by any means, quite the contrary. the music, art, and boss design are what made it stand out in the first place, but if you're expecting ANYTHING with staying power or depth that will be fun past 10-40 hours you'll be sorely disappointed, VERY fun with mods though\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

If you like building and that sort of thing, it can be fun. However, the best building materials are only available in the end-game stage (the final biome in the current update). You have to progress all the way to the end game just to get the best building materials, and after that, I guess you just wait for the next update. Sailing and fishing are boring as hell. The fishing mechanics do not make any sense at all.
One example that annoyed me the most was spending hours gathering materials and sailing them to homebase to craft and upgrade your equipment, thinking that more armour means better defence/tanking, only to find out that blocking and parrying depend on your maximum health instead of your shield’s upgrade level or armour level. I died so many times in one specific biome that I lost a lot of skill levels, which made progressing all over again really annoying. (In this game, you lose skill levels every time you die, for example: Bow, Blocking, Sword, etc.)
Multiplayer is neither optimised nor stable at all, even though the game has been out for ages. (which is really sad since the game is not really that fun to play solo either.)
(World Modifiers can adjust the world difficulty settings to your liking, but apparently for a first playthrough it is best to keep them on the default settings.)
The community is fantastic, though. I got to meet some nice people on the official discord server.

As you continue playing just to get more items, I started realizing that none of it really matters because the gameplay loop barely evolves. You grind materials, craft the next set of gear, beat a boss, then repeat the exact same process again with little variation or depth added along the way. After a while, progression stops feeling rewarding and instead feels like a chore stretched out by unnecessary farming and travel time.. What disappointed me most is how empty the experience began to feel after the initial wonder wore off. The world looks atmospheric at first, but exploration quickly loses its magic because there’s not much meaningful content waiting for you outside of resource gathering. Combat feels clunky and repetitive, building eventually becomes the main attraction, and if building isnt enough to carry the experience for you, the game starts feeling shallow. What makes this worse is that games like Enshrouded managed to keep me engaged far more despite releasing much later. It has more interesting progression, more varied activities, better movement, more rewarding exploration, and systems that actually feel modern and evolving. The fact that a newer game already feels more content-rich and engaging says a lot considering Valheim has been out for years.

But I don't really like modding myself, so I can't play anymore going back to vanilla with no extra armor slots, no quick food slots, no extra arrow slots... and whatever other tiny QoL improvements my friend insisted on modding in. The building is the greatest part of the game.
The game has a runescape style skill system that takes hours to grind, somewhat satisfying but you don't get any real bonus to leveling the skills except for more damage and less stamina used on running, the jumping skill may as well be the only unique skill as you jump higher.
Now for everything bad.
Your health and stamina never change from their base values, the ONLY way to increase your health and stamina is you have food buffs active, you can have 3, and the food items start with low 5-10 minute timers and reach a whopping total of 30min times, AMAZING. also it has a diminishing value so after 5-10 minutes the food buff is basically over.
Combat is kinda meh, you're either an archer, or waiting until the end of the game to be a mage, melee is just a secondary "oopsies my weapons broke" playstyle. Don't you know all vikings were magical archers?
The game completely stops being fun past the Plains biome, with the next biome being stuck at 0% render distance and the final biome is so god awful most people quit before finishing the last boss. Which arguably is a cool fight.
All the bosses are okay, with the sole exception of sat- I mean The Queen, because ♥♥♥♥ you and your ability to see ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anything. When all the strategies for this boss is to cheese her, it's a bad designed fight.
Every enemy in the game past the black forest has so much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ health for no reason. It's like having a full blown boss battle with a random ass wolf, what is this elden ring? It's as if the entire game was solely balanced for multiplayer.
Hitting the mistlands and unlocking magic is kinda neat if you weren't currently in the worst designed biome, the biome rewards exploration, that thing you can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥ do because you can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥ see and have to climb mountains every 3 seconds.
Death is so unbelievably punishing. You lose skill levels upon death, you know..the things that take hours to level up, yeah if a food buff wore off mid bossfight you can just die on the spot and lose 5 hours of skill grinding, not to mention "rescue missions"
When you die you have to go get all your ♥♥♥♥ back from your gravestone. With no food buffs or gear, so anthing can kill you. So you'll have to always keep a 2nd set of gear and food ready to go, and if you die just get your 3rd set of gear, and 4th, and 5th.
So everyone just ends up cheating and enabling godmode, flying to get your ♥♥♥♥ and go back to normal.
The ashlands is a massive difficulty spike, probably because they haven't nerfed the living ♥♥♥♥ out of this biome yet. Like they did with every single biome.
Don't bother concerning yourself with the armor/weapon balance, melee isn't remotely balanced because the dev's don't care about it. Melee armor gives you absolutely no benefit, the same goes for 2h weapons like greataxes and hammers, Ateger's or w/e the hell they're called are pretty good. The 2h weapons have too much knockback and not enough stagger so all you end up doing is pushing people out of your range
while doing basically no damage.
Armor value from heavy armor isn't worth the massive loss of mobility, you get a little bit more defense but you move so much slower than JohnViking who got heat resistance, movespeed, almost the same defense, and damage boost 3 biomes ago. Meanwhile you're spending 20 hours mining and hauling ♥♥♥♥ back to smelt it and upgrade it, it's just a waste of time.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tYou see my playtime. I’ve spent a decent amount of time playing Valheim with friends. And I will continue playing it until we’ve seen all content. It’s not a _bad_ game. But it’s not a good game, either. Since Valheim is still in Early Access at the time of writing, this review serves a double role of explaining why I wouldn’t recommend it, and providing feedback to the dev. There is no real order or logic to what will follow.
The tl;dr of this review is that Valheim introduces friction into every action. You have a goal you want to reach but Valheim gets in the way. That’s normal for games. Otherwise there would just be a ’you win’ button. Games are meant to have obstacles you need to overcome. But Valheim pricks you with a thousand needles every step of the way. That’s plain annoying. Many of these needle pricks come from cranking the realism slider up too high.
I would’ve liked to write more, but the character limit cuts this review short.
Especially in the early game, but also later, your best option – your only option to survive – is to run. Run as fast as the wind can carry you. But every single mob in the game is persistent like a bloodhound. When you’ve depleted and regained your stamina multiple times, they’re still after you. By that time, however, you’ve stumbled into the next enemy who will now also chase you. In the end you’ve crossed a whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ continent (the map in Valheim is composed of islands) just by running away from danger. Whatever it was you actually wanted to do at the beginning of that encounter, you’re now miles away from your target. Running away from mob after mob for minutes while you’re _trying_ to go in the opposite direction isn’t fun.
Another thing are the entry-level mobs. Throughout the game you tend to be in the overworld to farm some stuff – mowing down a forest for wood or mining a vein of copper. These things take time, but there’s also a meditative quality to spend a few hours (real-time) to eradicate a forest from the face of the earth… if it weren’t for the mobs. They’re often the very first enemies you find in the game, so they’re seriously underpowered by the time you need to farm this many resources.
What this effects to is that way too often you need to set down your actual task to one-hit some nuisances. In that stage of the game they don’t even deal damage because you’re so overpowered compared to them. But you still can’t ignore them because their attacks still have the knockback of a freight train. Seriously. Getting hit by a pebble somehow moves you 2 meters. So you _have_ to kill them.
There would be such an easy fix: Let me buy and equip an item that just shoos away boring enemies. Price it at 2k so it’s not immediately available. The item creates a bubble of, say, 50m radius that enemies whose attacks would hurt you by less than 10HP (accounting for your equipped armor) can’t penetrate.
Valheim is a game of exploration. Its world is huge and procedurally generated. Unfortunately, it is boringly generated. There are multiple different biomes, and they are interesting. Each is completely different than the one before. But _within the same biome,_ everything is the same. And that’s a shame. If you’ve seen the biome once there is really no joy in finding another biome.
At one point in our playthrough that became painfully obvious: For each biome there is a boss you need to fight in order to progress. However, not every _instance_ of the biome has the boss. For two biomes we had to spend literal IRL hours searching multiple different instances of these biomes util we found the boss. This reduces the gameplay to going to a new island, running across the whole thing as fast as you can and returning because it was empty after all. There is exploration in the sense that you fill in the map, but it’s dull. There is nothing interesting to find, nothing to grab your attention. Just a series of sprints over land that you’ve seen again and again. Running for hours over a barrend landscape in order to progress isn’t fun.
As I’ve said the world is _huge_. To go to remote parts you build a ship and set sail… for a very long time. On our last long journey that I remember, _one trip_ took somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes. Crossing our known world at that time would’ve taken 60–90 minutes. Due to a game mechanic I won’t spoil here, you can go faster if enough people are on board.
Now here’s the WTF moment of this game: Only one person can steer the ship. _Everyone else on board has nothing to do!_ They have no agency and no tasks. You _have_ to sail long distances, and it’s beneficial if many people are on board, but there’s nothing to do for them. The winning strategy for them is to go AFK and do something else. Now tell me that this isn’t bad game design. Even the person steering the ship has long stretches of time where there’s nothing to do. You just go in a straight line and that’s it.
Another annoyance that factors into the previous one, but is really a separate issue: The wind direction is random. In the early game that was fun. You’d have to wait for good winds before you could set sail and go exploring. But in the late game, when you need to cross kilometers and are thrown back to ruddering a good portion of the journey, you’ll just curse the game. It’s so boring.
In our little group we’ve turned towards just one person venturing out while the others do something better with their time. Again: A multiplayer game that punishes doing ♥♥♥♥ together. Make it make sense to me.
There is one biome in particular that is just a pain in the ass from start to finish. I’m talking about the Mistlands. Running and jumping in the game depletes stamina. You have to wailt for it to refill. In this particular biome you _must_ run _and_ jump _all the time_. This leads to your ‘walking’ (let’s be gracious and call it that) for 20–50 meters and then wait for your stamina bar to fill up again. 30m more, wait, 50m, wait. I cannot for the life of me comprehend how anyone could opine that this is fun gameplay. At that point Valheim turns into an idle game.
Luckily this biome can be finished quickly (if you’re lucky with finding the boss). But that still accounts for several hours of gameplay. At the end of the biome our party unanimously voted this biome the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and all of us were glad it was over. We won’t be returning unless we absolutely have to.
This has the side effect that we won’t explore one of the game’s mechanics, wizardry because we can’t be arsed to farm the required resources. Dev, you wasted your time putting that in. Sorry.
This is a big one that has caused a lot of frustration: Disconnects. Every session we play, we get multiple disconnects. I think that the internet connection of my peers might be bad. If the connection gets lost, there’s nothing Valheim can do. That’s on us. However, if Valheim decides to kick one player off the server while our shared voice chat keeps working uninterrupted, then I blame the game. And I also blame the game if that player can’t simply reconnect. If one player disconnects, they often have to close Valheim and open it again before they can join the server again. There’s really no excuse for that. Fix the game!
We’ve had brittle connections in other games. We were much more tolerant with those games because they made re-joining painless. Valheim doesn’t. Another punch in the guts is that Valheim fails to keep the game world in a consistent state. On multiple occasions we have lost valuable items because the connection broke as one player was transferring items to/from chests. Sometimes items get duplicated, but subjectively that doesn’t make up for losing items. Losing your progress to a bug isn’t fun.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Early game you can feel the joy of discovering a new world to explore and build on, but quickly you find out how much of it is repetition biome after biome. However, you can still enjoy many things: The world can be beautiful and some lore bits can be found it you are curious. Combat can feel rewarding with some mechanics (dodging and parrying) and different builds, but at the same time, so much is thrown at you that combat really becomes how many weird food ingredients you grinded for better food and potions since stamina regeneration remains the same the whole game and you roleplay as a fearsome Viking constantly running away from everything, praying the stamina goes up before death finds you again (and you lose a few levels of many skills that will take an hour to level up again). Boss battles at least can be fun if your favorite RNG favors you.
Managed to defeat Fader rushing the game with a friend in under 125h/a week with the teleport metal option activated (thankfully we have some sandbox options to enable after some protest) because the alternative was just distasteful considering all the wandering and moving already necessary to finish the game. Couldn't imagine how suckers defend it as the default way considering how buggy the navigation, storage and solo play is. Limiting portal usage just to waste your time, basically. Building and farming are a test of patience that also just waste your time (you need to build a workbench to destroy things and cover it if you want to build things, really? Plant a single crop at a time with low yield after a long time, really?)
Mistlands and Ashlands were a lesson in annoying enemy behavior. Messy mechanics, constant spawns and grinding limited resources for the remainder of the game. From what I've read, the devs are mostly against necessary QoL changes that everyone asks for and content drops have been slow. Tragic.
Hell, I can't even imagine a parent or someone who works all the day long and has only one or two hours to play the game each day and the whole gaming session would be just sailing until they find something useful, farming or mining slowly every day to achieve barely any progress or just trying to get back your loot from your body from stupid, random deaths.
Despite all that, I will probably come back when the full game releases (someday, somehow HA) and if we get some awfully needed changes (and achievements become available).\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Its been 5 years instead of 1 to be completed. The raodmap changed but the upates are extremely slow, even for an indie studio. It feels like they made their money (which is great) are are now milking early access as long as possible. When I purchased the game I was expecting it to be finished within the 1 year as they advertised, but its been 5 years! The small updates that come out are not worth re-installing the game for. I have to leave a negative review until its finished as its just unacceptable.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t
