\n\t\t\t\t\tI originally bought this game back in 2021 to cheer up a friend of mine. We proceeded to play this game for 13+ hours straight. Years later, we are now married and getting ready to play the 1.0 release as a date night. One of the best survival games I've ever played, and it helped me get married. 10/10

I've spent hundreds of hours here, both alone and with a good friend. Over time it became much more than a way to pass an evening. It was there for me during some hard times in my life, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it helped me get through them.

Here you find whatever you need at the moment. Want a fight? Grab your axe and go meet whatever dares to challenge you. Want adventure? Raise the sail and let the sea decide where it takes you. And when your heart is heavy, you just plant some wheat and watch it grow =). You listen to meat sizzling over the fire and rain drumming on the roof of a house you built log by log. And slowly, it gets easier.

Special thanks for co-op. I still remember the day my friend and I decided to become sailors, and how we nearly went to the bottom the moment I took the helm. I remember chasing a sea serpent through a storm, waves crashing over the side, the ship groaning, and neither of us willing to give up, because what wouldn't you do for a bowl of serpent stew? And afterwards came the hot tub, the steam, the quiet, and the feeling that life was good. Evenings like that stay with you forever.

Dear Iron Gate, thank you. For a world with no rush. For a quiet where you can hear yourself think. For never giving up on your game and carrying it to release with so much love and patience. You didn't just make a game. You made a place where people feel better.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI absolutely adore this game. It's one of my favourite games of all time. The atmosphere, the building, that initial sense of wonder and discovery playing the game for the first time, that comfortable familiarity from returning home to the base you put a hundred hours into building, a thousand hours into the game. That excitement mixed with fear setting out to sea in a Karve, the accomplishment of successfully carting a ton of copper or iron back to it and sailing home. This is a game made by people who really, really knew what they wanted to make, what they wanted it to look, sound and feel like.

Or rather, it was.

I first played this game around 2022 or 2023, after they reworked food and added the ice caves to the mountains, but long before they introduced the Mistlands. The game felt like it had a very clear vision back then, but things quite clearly changed not long afterward. The Mistlands are a jarring tonal shift from any of the prior content, and not an entirely pleasant one at that. The Ashlands are even moreso, to the point of feeling like a complete different game. It started to lose that 'magic' that made Valheim feel special, and not because I'd already spent so many hours on it. Something was missing that I couldn't put my finger on. It felt like they were 'rushing' (I use that word extremely loosely here, given the glacial pace of development) to get to the end and stop working on it.

One of my biggest complaints with the game is that the ocean is so empty. You spend so much time sailing, which I love, but so little actually happens while you're doing so. A year or so ago, Iron Gate stated that an ocean rework would not come with 1.0 but was a definite consideration for 1.1 or beyond, and that they would very much like to expand on ocean content in the future once the game fully launched. Fast forward to now, and their last piece of news was a very direct statement that there would be no such ocean update, or even any guarantee of any further content at all. I wouldn't have minded so much, if they hadn't SPECIFICALLY singled out the ocean question as a point in their FAQ. They know it's empty. They know we don't like it. They don't care.

Add in the fact that apparently the devs have "moved on to another game", which, if you research it, curiously isn't by Iron Gate themselves but a different studio...you have to wonder if at some point things got messy and Iron Gate fractured internally. It would explain the drastic tonal shift in the content and the slowdown in development past the second year after release, if the team split and lost its creative drive. And I mention all this without touching on the roadmap fiasco that Valve asked them to take down...

I love this game, I really do. But because I love it I reserve the right to criticise it so harshly and be disappointed that it remains an eternally incomplete and flawed masterpiece. It could've been so much more. It didn't even need much - add some more enemies, dungeons and things to discover in the black forest, swamp and plains (which they sort of did, admittedly, but it was lacklustre), expand armour sets a bit, make the ocean more interesting, tweak the newer biomes to be more in line with the mood of the rest of the game. It would've been perfect.

Valheim is fun, until it isn't.

Valheim starts out as a genuinely good and enjoyable survival game. Exploring, building, crafting new equipment and figuring out how each biome works is satisfying. The early progression feels like you're constantly discovering something new.

Then you reach Swamp.

From that point onward, the game becomes increasingly tedious. What was initially an enjoyable survival/exploration loop slowly turns into a chore: carry loot back to base, fight enemies, die, make a corpse run, sail for ages, repeat. The further you progress, the more it feels like the game is trying to waste your time rather than challenge you.

Exploration and biomes

Mountains are where I started feeling this shift. From there, playing Valheim became less about exploring a new world and more about enduring the systems surrounding that exploration.

Plains are especially disappointing. After all these years, they still feel incredibly empty. There's nothing particularly interesting about the biome itself.

Mistlands was probably the last biome where I felt the developers actually tried something different. It's dangerous and annoying, sure, but at least it has an identity and some interesting environmental design.

Then comes Ashlands.

The first time you enter Ashlands is genuinely impressive. The arrival makes you think you're about to experience something great. Unfortunately, the actual biome is miserable to play. The terrain is awful. Enemy spawning feels excessive. The landscape is boring and uninspired. The fortresses are tedious rather than interesting. Farming flametal is an absolute nightmare. What initially feels like an exciting new region quickly turns into an exhausting slog.

At that point, the game stops feeling like it's challenging me and starts feeling like it's actively fighting me.

Combat

The combat is probably Valheim's biggest mechanical problem.

It feels sluggish and clunky. Your character is constantly locked into slow animations while enemies can throw attacks at you repeatedly. You often have to predict an enemy attack because by the time your own animation finishes, you've already committed yourself to getting hit. Terrain makes this even worse. Getting stuck on a random rock or fighting something that is slightly above or below you can completely screw up your attacks. Some biomes are so vertically designed that fighting there becomes frustrating rather than challenging. The stamina system doesn't help. If you're not significantly stronger than whatever you're fighting, running out of stamina can basically mean you're dead.

And then there are the weapons.

The balance is all over the place. Some weapons create a massive power spike the moment you craft them, while others require huge amounts of effort and rare resources only to give you something that feels completely underwhelming. Weapon can take forever to obtain and your reward is essentially: here's your stick, idiot.

Bosses

Boss design has an even bigger problem: it often feels like you're expected to fight bosses in exactly the way the developers intended.

Boss fights expose some of the worst design tendencies. There’s little room for player expression or preferred builds. You’re expected to approach them the way the developers envisioned, often resorting to cheesing because the alternative is miserable. Mountain bosses suffer from sparse arenas and random adds crashing the party. Mistlands piles on swarming adds. Fader is particularly egregious. Relentless AoE with almost no safe windows for melee, forcing you into the narrow playstyle the fight was clearly balanced around. The broad pattern of bosses resisting pierce and being weak to blunt weapons further flattens variety.

Inventory management

Inventory management becomes one of the main activities of the game.

You have limited inventory space. Armor takes slots. Weapons take slots. Tools take slots. Food takes slots. Everything weighs something. Then you go exploring and within minutes you're carrying a pile of random materials, some useful, some useless, and suddenly you're full. So you get on your boat and spend the next hour transporting resources back home.

Fun.

And sailing itself isn't exactly thrilling. A lot of the time you're just sitting there, waiting for the wind to cooperate. If it doesn't, congratulations, you're now playing Valheim while watching netflix on your second monitor. The transportation mechanics don't create interesting decisions. They mostly create downtime.

Corpse runs

Corpse runs are another mechanic that starts out interesting and becomes progressively more ridiculous. Early on, dying teaches you something. You make a mistake, you learn from it and try again. Eventually, however, deaths become increasingly dependent on the game's terrain, enemy spawning and bad luck. You can sail somewhere you've never been, step into the wrong area, get surrounded by goblins and mosquitoes, die before you have any chance to react, and suddenly you've lost an hour of your life. And if you didn't have a portal nearby? Enjoy your boat trip back.

At that point the corpse run isn't creating tension anymore. It's just wasting your time.

Progression

The entire progression system starts feeling repetitive.

New biome, new material, spend ages processing it, craft new equipment, kill boss, unlock next biome, repeat.

And repeat.
And repeat.
And repeat.

There isn't much evolution in the actual gameplay loop. You're mostly doing the same thing with increasingly annoying enemies, increasingly inconvenient terrain and increasingly large amounts of material to transport. It feels less like progression and more like the same gameplay loop being stretched longer and longer.

Character skills don't help much either. Leveling feels almost cosmetic, and losing skill levels on death barely feels meaningful. So why have the system at all?

Building

Building is the one area where Valheim still shines.

It's probably the best part of the game and the main reason I may come back to play this game. Creating your own structures, figuring out how the building pieces work and making something that actually feels like your own is genuinely satisfying.

Even here, though, the game manages to introduce frustration.

Materials are heavy and annoying to transport. Building tall structures can lead to deaths from falling. Understanding structural integrity and figuring out exactly why a roof suddenly decides to collapse takes time that could be spent actually building.

Final thoughts

Valheim’s early hours deliver a compelling survival sandbox with strong atmosphere and satisfying progression. Past the Black Forest, and especially from the Mountains through Ashlands, the game prioritizes friction, repetition, and forced playstyles over fun exploration and player agency. What begins as an inviting Viking adventure slowly turns into a logistics simulator punctuated by sluggish combat and increasingly hostile and unbalanced biomes. The building system is the last major pillar that still feels worth engaging with. Everything else increasingly asks how much of your time you’re willing to waste.\t\t\t\t\t

I can not think of another game that goes so hard out of its way to make you miserable in the pettiest way possible. It makes everything possible to waste your time and bog down your progress.

You want to land on this swamp and make a post? Here is a relentless spawn of ghosts and skellies that would not allow you to even land properly, would constantly destroy your workbench, your portal and your ship. Do you want to just get some ore? No, we will spawn endless wave of mobs literally out of thin air just to be obnoxious. What about building a fortress on un-accessible hill that has only one narrow passage to it - now we will have the mobs literally scale the unscalable terrain just to ruin your plans.

Even the world server options are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and implemented in the petties way possible, just because the devs obviously hate giving the players what might be considered more relaxed experience. The "not losing equipment on death" actually means you do not drop only what is actively equipped on you at the time of death - so if you have full quickbar of weapons and tools, you will drop everything except for the weapon you hold when dying. If you drown, you keep only your armour - because swimming auto-sheathes your weapons and shield. The point of not dropping your gear on death is to avoid corpse-runs if you are willing to sacrifice what you gathered - but you still need to corpse-run to gather all your weapons, tools and food. What is then the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ point to even have this option? This are one of the worst examples I have seen of malicious compliance from the side of the devs. "Here are the options you wanted.... but they are ♥♥♥♥, enjoy!"

There is a severe lack of quality of life that is a given on most other games in the genre, like pulling crafting materials automatically form chests or auto-dumping your materials in chests instead of manually storing everything every 5 minutes, because your average viking can not wear more than an old lady with arthritis. You need a number of mods to make the experience bearable, but I can not be bothered to have to deal with that ♥♥♥♥ again like in the past. Why would the devs even consider making official mod support, it is clear they hate any form of player convenience.

I enjoyed my time with the game in the past, but at this point I can not be bothered to have my time wasted considering there are so many other good games that I can play. The survival crafting genre has learned a lot from Valheim, has improved on it and moved on, but the Valheim itself seems to have been stuck in the past. I had hopes for the 1.0 release, but few hours in I just can't be bothered anymore. There is a difference between hard and punishing but the devs just do not seme to understand it.

If you love getting your balls crushed multiple times an hour, your progress deleted and your time wasted - this is the perfect game for you.

\n\t\t\t\t\tthis game is not for everyone, and unfortunately that includes me. you can, however, get a pretty decent experience out of it if you modify the world settings. disregard any valheim hardcore-truthers; it's a single-player game and you can play how you want. i think the "intended" design is too riddled with annoyances to be worth playing casually.

the first point is probably what will turn most people off. every gameplay mechanic has some annoying aspect baked into it. fast-draining stamina, support-based building, low durability, a negative feedback-loop death system. the sum of these obstacles just makes the game annoying to play, especially since the gameplay loop is pretty lackluster. you arrive in a new biome, new enemies will kill you in 1-2 hits until you can salvage upgrade materials, then you fight a janky boss and move on. most of your deaths aren't earned; enemies will hit you through walls, you try to utilize a block/dodge except the game punishes you for trying and damages you anyway, generated terrain will prevent you from moving, etc.

overall i think that valheim would benefit from a skill tree and greater focus on the combat experience. it's framed as a "survival craft" game, but it's more akin to terraria in the sense that you're not fighting to survive, but rather to progress. you don't eat because you'll starve, you eat to fight tougher enemies. the tedium of the game would make sense if it was the story of a viking surviving in the wilderness, but in the context of an epic adventure to fight norse monsters, it just feels out of place.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tValheim is a survival game that stands out mainly thanks to its amazing soundtrack, visuals and level design. The game has this cozy atmosphere that makes you want to just stay in it. The place where you can sink an unbelievable amount of time is building. The only things limiting you are your imagination (and gravity). I can easily imagine someone who does not care about the progression just turning on unlimited building mode and spending hundreds of hours purely on that.
The level design is awesome. Every biome has its own personality and hides a lot of things you might not notice at first glance. You approach each of them with a different playstyle, and each one has its own progression tools that help you get through it. The game is built around exploration and discovery, so I highly recommend not using any third party tools that make it easier. There is no better feeling than discovering the unknown.
Multiplayer works well. Shared map, boss loot for everyone, and the game is designed nicely for online play, even though it works fine solo too. In Valheim, the journey is the goal. The boss fights themselves take a back seat and mostly serve as a finish line for each biome. The bosses are alright. Not great, not terrible. Their abilities are well telegraphed, so you always know where the danger is. The only annoying thing about them is their HP, which turns them into unnecessary bullet sponges.
The game is missing a few QoL features that are almost a must in many survival games these days, like a sort button for chests or crafting items directly from chests without having them in your inventory. I strongly recommend getting mods for these. It makes the experience a lot better. Valheim can get really grindy, mostly when it comes to mining. If you do not want to sink an insane amount of hours into it, just use the custom settings and bump up the loot multiplier.
However, the final Deep North biom is a big disappointment. The ideas are good, but the execution is not. It is the weakest zone in the game. Weak level design, unnecessary grind, and RNG for getting items. The dungeons are flat and add nothing of value. The biggest surprise for me was the boss itself, where the developers were not afraid to experiment and try something new compared to the previous bosses.
TLDR; Valheim is a great survival game and despite all its flaws, I would still recommend it without hesitation. It is still one of the best games in the genre, and it is important to remember that this is a small indie studio that did a great job. There is something for everyone. Whether you are looking for relaxation and just want to build something, or a magical world waiting to be explored.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI wish steam had neutral option since this would be one of them. It's genuinely one of the greatest games I've ever played, which makes it even more frustrating to see it how the development have been last few years before the rushed 1.0 release.

But half-finished biomes, abandoned sailing, repetitive fishing, pointless breeding, no dedicated equipment slots, barely any dungeon or POI variety, limited customization, no new UI, no moon phases, no multiplayer interactions and no mod support.

Some of the original assets still make the game enjoyable enough to be passable. But the modding community have been doing a great job keeping it alive for so long it's probably better at this point to avoid keep breaking mods.

Hopefully it wont be abandoned now that it's out... And lastly i hope this wont be deleted since they have been deleting comments and stuff since launch.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm going to get flack for this, but this game is a monotonous grind. Working towards something bigger in video games is always part of the enjoyment and hook, but this was just too slow. The building system is picky, the combat is clunky, and the inventory management just feels off. Progression overrall feels like it takes so long to get going and the guidelines to get you there are too vague. I enjoy exploring and learning systems, but for an Open World Survival game the curve was just a bit too steep.

I will say that I understand why people love this game so much. I'm sure once you get past the grind it's an extremely enjoyable game. I just value my time more than others. Maybe down the road I'll give it another go, but for now I have more enjoyable games to play.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm going to be "One of those guys" that has over 1,100 hours into Valheim and does NOT recommend it. However, I'm doing so for the purpose of getting someone at IronGate to consider making some changes, because the potential of this game is incredible and although the "vanilla" experience is meh, a modded journey can actually be incredible. I strongly recommend playing with a few QoL mods, even on your first playthrough. There is a massive community of passionate modders out there that have really elevated this game much closer to a polished experience.

Valheim overall has a bones of a phenomenal game and a LOT of things to praise. The building in this game is extremely well done and enjoyable, crafting is pretty good, and certain aspects of the combat are quite good (parrying with certain shields/weapons has very satisfying sounds and visuals, some weapons feel great to use). The art style of the game is terrific and strikes a great balance between low poly but still high quality assets. Some parts of progression feel good, and biomes like the Meadows and Dark Forrest are very enjoyable.

That being said, the game has some major flaws that really feel bad and honestly could be fixed with just a little bit of effort. A lot of these flaws are fixed with mods as mentioned earlier, but some of them aren't (at least to my knowledge) and it's such a shame. In no particular order:
1. No dedicated player armor inventory is just lazy, bad design. It also makes zero sense, if my armor is ON my person, why would it occupy a slot in my inventory?
2. Utility items can't be stacked. Want to carry extra weight and also be able to actually navigate the mistlands with a wisp? Tough luck, sucks to suck.
3. Stamina regeneration is PAINFULLY slow, even with Rested buff. Not Rested? Sorry, no stamina regen. Navigating some of the terrain in mountains or mistlands.
4. Boss fights are unfathomably boring and poorly designed. Each boss after the first boss (who isn't even really a boss, he just dies), is a massive damage sponge with 2, maybe 3 mechanics that get spammed until your brain is liquid. It's some of the worst boss "design" you've ever seen. I would like to see bosses with multiple phases, telegraphed attacks, unique boss mechanics, etc. Whole system just needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
5. Some of the biomes are miserable experiences. The jagged cliffs of mistlands are just awful, and the mist itself is bad design. Ashlands is a CONSTANT assault on your character, on your framerate, on your sanity, on your enjoyment, Deep North is SO BORING and empty. You can run for 10+ minutes and encounter almost nothing of interest, it's so bad.
6. Super low visibility during storms and in Ashlands. Low visibility is a constant headache and makes for bad, unfun game design.
7. Treasures found throughout the world, in dungeons and in abandoned settlements, are SO often utterly unrewarding. Instead of feeling happy that you found a super rare treasure box out in the world, you open it only to find a torch, some feathers, and some low level arrows. Like bro, what? What the hell is this?
8. Hexes (the flying enemies in Deep North) are so badly designed I could write multiple paragraphs about them. No effort or thought went into the programming of this enemy.
9. Carts are so, so bad. They seem like they would be the way to transport heavy goods but in fact they're the opposite.
10. Sailing is unfathomably boring and bad, wind is guaranteed to go against you 100% of the time unless you use the Moder power. The Ocean biome is almost completely void of anything interesting. No floating treasures, no way to explore the ocean depths, virtually zero dangers (easy to outrun or kill the serpents), leviathans are boring (no enemies on them).
11. Fishing is horrible and unfun, basically not worth doing ever.
12. Using mounts to travel is genuinely awful, very terrible controls.
13. Taming is messy and weird and badly designed.
14. Feeding tamed animals is terrible, no dedicated feed boxes available.
15. The new Forge system is the worst thing ever designed for a video game. 65% chance to upgrade your item by 1 level and 35% chance to DESTROY it completely, while consuming an INSANELY rare item, is about as braindead as it gets. It's like the developers don't actually play video games? Not one single human on earth likes this addition. Most players don't (and shouldn't) engage with this system at all.
16. The game absolutely DROWNS you in utterly useless items (bones, coins) for no reason.
17. Can't build from containers.
18. Can't sort items in containers or inventory.
19. Many items are just flat out worthless (lots of trophies do nothing at all)
20. Poorly balanced items. Some items are just flat out miles better than others. Most noticeably, the heavy armor items are often just way worse because the tiny damage mitigation is obliterated by the speed penalty.
21. Ashlands remains so badly optimized you'll have huge drops in FPS even with a beast machine at lowest settings.

\n\t\t\t\t\tPlayed hundreds of hours up to Mistlands, then took a break to avoid getting burned out before the full game released, never had a single issue with the game. Started a solo world on 1.0, world was randomly deleted multiple times, luckily I was able to restore from cloud saves, but now cloud saves fail and tell me to try again later. Lost about 60 hours of game time that I can't recover. I don't even want to start over because there is no way to be sure I won't log in in another 60 hours and my world is just gone again.

I can't recommend this game until they clean up whatever cloud system changes they implemented between Mistlands and 1.0. If I can log in again and restore my backup, AND log in a few more times without my world being deleted and having to be restored every time close out the game, I will write my review on the content of the game. It's one of the best survival games, but only when you can actually continue the fun upon logging back in. I have a post on the community hub on the Steam forums, please if you know why the game is doing this, I would love to fix it and re-write this review. I've tried all the basic stuff, fresh installs, verifying files, confirming no corrupted files, and tons of other troubleshooting tasks.\t\t\t\t\t
