It seemed like a solid game and I was extremely excited to play, but from what I can tell, the developer has removed the ability to play without a compatibility layer a couple days after launch. It also also designed in a way that does not let you easily use more modern versions of Proton. (Uses runtime 4.0)

Audio does not work when using Linux even with the devs experimental builds that were put out to fix that. It seems there are also performance issues later on with Linux specifically.

Seems like a solid game built with under an extremely poor(for this use case) Windows specific framework.

It does also have all the AI issues you can read about in other negative reviews and is likely the cause for using the terrible use case framework I mentioned.\t\t\t\t\t

The UI is gorgeous and the puzzles easy to grasp, but the AI slop is undeniably present and has gotten worse since the demo. I don't mean the graphics. It's a programming game, AI sprites to illustrate is fine by me.
But the functions and documentations have obviously been written by an AI, and this *hurts* because they all come with 3 lines of useful description followed by a litany of exceptions or edge cases that will probably never happen and will never need to be handled (with a half-smart design). After the first few hours of going through components handwritten, a very enjoyable ride, it becomes reminiscent of pre-internet era and dredging through C++ tomes to understand how the hell things are supposed to be used.

Then there's the pacing. I just don't like it. It doesn't lean strongly enough on the simulation side to be immersive so it's just a massive wasting-my-time feeling.
-- Rovers moving slowly, means every slight test or modification demands 30s of waiting around for the slightest change .Which might be fine ("get it right the first time") except it's mostly about testing your understanding of the documentation.
-- Unlocks being time-gated is just silly. I can see an argument for puzzle unlocking harder ones, but time-gating? I want to play the game on my own time, if I finish a puzzle I expect the next one to present itself, if not have them all available from the get-go. I'm not letting the game idle for the sake of playing it later.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tFor context I am a programmer and thoroughly enjoy some nice programming puzzles. I picked this game up expecting a cool low-pressure environment to chill and write some automations. While my main complaint with this game is the abundance of low-quality AI generated content I am not inherently against AI, but the extent to which it is used for the production of this game is extremely disappointing.

That being said, literally everything in this game (UI, music, puzzles, story, etc.) is 100% AI generated and poorly so. I truly do not believe a human had anything to do with any part of the writing or building of this game. Insane that the "developer" behind this no-effort slop fest is charging money for it. Seriously if you want programming puzzles go to codingame or another website and save yourself the fifteen bucks, because paying for this game is absolutely pointless.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI don't have anything fundamentally against the use of AI in game development when it's used by a passionate developer to make something that would otherwise be impossible. In this case, it feels like it has been used by a developer who doesn't care to take the time to make their own game.

ALL the writing reads like it's been 100% AI generated (and is therefore completely insufferable and annoying to read). All the music is AI generated. The UI is AI generated. The puzzles are AI generated. The item sprites and their descriptions are AI generated. The voice acting is AI generated.

What did the developer do for this game, aside from prompting Claude? What aspects of the creative process itself do they actually care about and enjoy, aside from the base concept? Honestly playing this game has kind of changed how I feel about AI as a tool for human self-expression. If this is the result of someone being empower with AI to turn their good idea into reality, then maybe AI isn't such a good thing after all.

I agree that the term "AI Slop" is overused and watered down now, and after thinking about it is probably the wrong term to use. There was clearly effort from a human put into this game, but I don't know where or how much.

The problem I have with AI, specifically in the asset are (images, sprites, vocals, sound effects, etc.) is that it simply is just not paying someone who could do it both better, and with more consistency. I'd rather have the developer make something that can be improved by hand, or even just have it so that it's temporary until the dev can get it professionally done. But the staleness of AI generation is all over this game. Outside of the coding portions of this game, it's surprisingly stale to look at at times imo.

To be clear I don't mind and actually appreciate a game that focuses on the coding, and does not try to water down a lot of things for people who are new/never coded before, it's a nice change of pace.

But I also have found some inconsistencies in the API itself, like how sometimes you use `.kind` and sometimes you use `.kind()`, which leads to so much confusion on my end. Also it feels like there are sections of the game that feel like they were added as an after thought, instead of further elaborated on, like the contracts, they feel way too easy and were very predictable.

Also a lot of the info tabs are more confusing than they have to be.
While I like the game in a vacuum, I remember sometimes having trouble trying to figure out what the info tab was trying to tell me. I can't think of any immediate examples off the top of my head, but I do remember some of the info tabs giving me trouble in trying to understand what to do.

I also wonder why some things I can't even get simple numbers for, like how weight impacts speed and power usage on pioneers. Unless I'm missing something, you need to try and manually measure it yourself.

But here's the problem, I can't confidently give detailed feedback on everything, or even just appreciate in-game assets because I don't know what is and isn't AI.

I know that this seems like a teardown of the game, but I don't know what to compliment. It's frustrating because I don't know where the AI stops and the human begins. I want to give better compliments as I think there are genuinely good parts to the game, but I don't want to compliment something made by an AI because the human doesn't deserve the compliment as they never actually made it, and the AI doesn't deserve it because it's simply outputting something based on something stolen made by humans.

I also don't know if any of the feedback I want to give will actually be taken and used by the dev to improve the game, or interpreted by an AI in a way that it was never intended.
Computer science is an amazing space that is being poisoned by AI, and the last thing I want to see is more AI.

As for the game I mentioned above:
I'm seriously considering making it, but I definitely need to clarify some things.
The game is not intended as a "Here's how the game should have been" as the game would be mostly a passion project inspired by Code: Terraform and the frustration with AI usage in the gaming medium as a whole. I do plan to make substantial changes to make the game itself different from Code: Terraform. Both copyright law still exists and also there are changes that I would prefer.

But no, the game won't simply just be a remake of Code: Terraform as that's not very fun for me and is also kinda illegal. The game might not be a terraforming game at all even.

I might elaborate on this further, but I'll leave it at this for now.

Genuinely one of the worst I've seen in a game. Don't get me wrong, it's thorough but it's written like the target audience is already fluent in programming, with zero acknowledgement that most people buying a programming game are new to programming. Instead of plain language, it drops you straight into the deep end with jargon from step one. It got to the point where reading the solution code was faster than reading the tutorial explaning it. I had to use the code to translate the explanation of the tutorial, that should tell you how absurd it is.

To the dev, this is a game, not a university lecture. Fix the onboarding.

After some more hours and having given up on the tutorial altogether and actually playing the game i feel the game is as a tutorial should have been and the tutorial is the actual game lol. I learned more from the game than the tutorial.

Now as for the game itself. very well done, how everything works, the UI is crisp and intuitive, windows work as they should.

Now my critic is mainly thematic. It is a shame there are no stakes to the game really which i find it to be a major missed opportunity. Time and resource constraints are motivating. I understand the falling back to a no stakes due to the nature of the game and possible audience, however that balance between insentive and difficulty (through urgency) could have been easily managed through difficulty settings and thus leaving it up to the players to set according to their own pace.

In short i was expecting it to be a bit of a survival game where learning and deploying that knowledge would be rewarded with surviving yet another day and later down the path, thrive.

\n\t\t\t\t\tI really want to like this game. It has a lot of great ideas, but the documentation is absolutely horrible. Most of the time, I'm not struggling with the coding or problem-solving itself; I'm just trying to find the actual methods and functions I need to get the job done.

As you progress, it becomes increasingly unclear how various processes work because they aren't explained well at all. I've had to rely on trial and error just to figure out the systems. I love a good coding challenge, but this is just tedious. It's not fun digging through over 1,200 pages of badly written, likely AI-assisted documentation just to find the tools you need.

There is also a lot of AI-generated content. I don't mind that too much, but selling the AI music separately as an "original soundtrack" is pretty ridiculous.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI know the AI use disclaimer has everybody's hackles up, and for good reason in a world innundated by slop, so let me break down how the AI has been used here and to what effect.

This is the only example I know of in the gaming industry where AI content is used appropriately: to fill small and otherwise inconsequential details. The most notable AI contributions here is the voice acting, the music, and the menu layouts of the UI, all of which are accounted for in the disclaimer.

Voice acting is rare in the game, functioning to fill in some of the lore aspects that are going on in the background on good ol' planet Earth. Again, pretty inconsequential to the gameplay on a whole.

The menu layout definately is a pretty cut and dry default template. You won't find any glitzy UI here, but that's pretty typical for a game in the programming genre, where the spartan visuals contribute to the industrial software vibes. Using an AI to help organize and clean up an already minimalist style menu doesn't take away human content, since there was little there to begin with. A possible remedy for those who are particularly complainitive might be to add an unlockable feature where the user has the opportunity to code to customize the menu layouts (ex. coloiur schemes, font, maybe moving modules to custom categories). One of the most popular uses of coding today is to tailor UI to make it both functional and visually appealing, no?

As for the music, it's definately a generic generated house mix. I'm not going to give points for the sound track here. Listen to it or not, it's your decision. The mute button can be found in the lower right corner, in case you're having trouble locating it.

Now for the meat of the game: the coding aspects. No AI contribution here as far as I can see. The helpful manual in the DOCS too darn thorough and comprehensive to be written by an LLM. The optional coding puzzles are likewise too coherent to be designed by an AI slop generator. That takes a considerable amount of human effort, which ought to be recognized appropriately. In short, I recommend this game because of good quality content where it matters.

TLDR; The heart of the game is all the coding and instruction aspects, which are human made and well made too. All AI generated content can be found in menu organization or else aeesthetic elements that are off to the side and do not affect gameplay. This game is the only example I know of that uses gen AI without using slop. Worth a buy.\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\tI love programming and automation games.. But this game just feels soulless and poorly designed - largely, I expect, due to the game being clearly AI generated at every point (music, interfaces, art, gameplay systems..).

I am generally pro AI, but it feels incredibly overused here. Mechanics are introduced poorly. There's a tutorial, but it largely just focuses on coding concepts, not the actual systems in this game. And even once you've pieced together all the relevant documentation to solve a problem, the minigames you end up with are not particularly interesting puzzles.

Ultimately the biggest problem is just that there's no soul. This feels like a bunch of programming problems with nothing tangible in the game associated with it. One of the easiest ways to make money is just to solve what are essentially LeetCode questions that are completely unrelated to anything in the core gameplay.

The docs are decent, but they don't hold your hand. Expect to break stuff, read errors, and debug your own logic more than once β€” which is honestly the fun part if you're into that.

Quick heads up before you dive in: there’s ongoing chatter about AI involvement in how parts of the game (and even documentation) were crafted. Fair complaint or not, that's a separate conversation from whether the core game is good.

And for what it's worth: we're all going to be working alongside AI, but that doesn't mean you stop learning to code. If anything, it's the opposite β€” you still need to know what's happening under the hood to fix things when the logic breaks. This game makes you practice exactly that.

The contracts often feel like LeetCode problems with a terraforming theme: solve an isolated coding puzzle, transmit the answer, get credits.

The actual machine scripting is much better. Writing persistent scripts for solar tracking, oxygen production, pressure control, harvesting, biology, etc. does make your code feel connected to the world and progression.

I was hoping for something closer to Bitburner, where automation is the main game. Code: Terraform does get closer to that as it opens up, but it still mixes those systems with a lot of standalone coding challenges.

\n\t\t\t\t\tAs someone who enjoys a good Leetcode, this definitely scratches that itch. I really like the concept that you're using your code to solve 'real' problems, sometimes even with the assistance of visual cues.

For instance, in one challenge you're tasked with scanning a X,Y grid for useful space elements. When you fire off your attempt, it's not just running in the background and telling you whether you've succeeded or not. It pops up a nice little grid image and shows you each coordinate as you iterate through it. These tasks and visual hints pair well and get my problem solving juices flowing.

If you're even a little familiar with programming concepts (arrays, dictionaries, matrixes, searching, etc) then you will find something to enjoy here. You will also learn something too!\t\t\t\t\t

The game has some documentation, but it's not going to teach you how to code. This game is ALL about coding. I took some programming classes many years ago, but this one left me lost. I'm going to play The Farmer was Replaced for a while and see if it helps me get my head wrapped around this one, but I suspect, I would need to take some programming courses to really master this game. If you like coding, automation, engineering, or just messing around with systems until you somehow create something way more complicated than it ever needed to be, you NEED to try this. There is like- an infinite amount of possibilities when it comes to getting something done. If you do get this game, which I recommend more than anything, make sure you join the discord to get access to the experimental version!

The entire idea of terraforming a planet by actually programming the machines yourself is so insanely fun. You’re not just placing down an oxygen generator and watching a number go up. You can build an entire network of machines, sensors, generators, storage systems, turbines, power grids, etc. and then write the code that actually controls and monitors all of it.\t\t\t\t\t
