The game is actually not that bad. But it was created as a sandbox where you give players the power to do what they want, and guess what people do when that happens? They become @ssholes.
You die, you lose your ship and everything with it, including your character implants. And people tend to just gank for that reason alone. You want to shoot some enemy NPCs? Except someone to show up between waves, kill you and ruin weeks of farming currency.
The game does not have a big population. At most I saw around 30.000 players online. However the developers encourage multiboxing so it's probably not more than 10-15.000 players online, probably much less.
It's ran by whales and that fact makes it really hard to get into for someone who just wants to enjoy relaxing playstyle.
As a new player I recommend you stay away from it. Skill learning take YEARS, literaly YEARS and you will not catch up players who've been around for long. Unless you're willing to spend real money to boost time it takes to learn those skills. So the game is actually PAY TO WIN.

I simply don't have time to be competitive, but the whole idea of stretching out a career in mining and exploring sounds fantastic.
