This is by far the most polished and most stable early access title i stumbled upon in years. I've always been in love with those little sailing games, so I just had to immediately pick up this little gem and boy it is worth it.
Ships have armor and hull values, armor protects your ship but you just have one layer of armor on every side. If it is broken, you will take direct hull damage. If this reaches zero, you sink and drop all your collected powerups und a chunk of your gold for the other players to collect.
Aside from regular hull damaging shots you have chainshots to to slow down your opponent by tearing apart their sails and grapeshots to demolish an other ships crew. A damaged crew won't be able to repair your ship and sails or reload your cannons as they used to but they do regenerate over time.
You can just tank through everything with your slow dwarven stormanchor or run and gun with your small but fast human cinder. If you are more interested in melee you can always pick up the orc bloodfin and ram your opponents to death. These are just a few examples of playstyles and you can always modify your ships through unlockables to fit them into your personal playstyle.
Every stat in the game can be modified by your mates, they drop randomly after matches and can give your ship a cutting edge over the opponent by giving a substantial boost to one or two of your ships stats but you can always just equip three of them.

Balancing
Being a PVP game, balancing is key. In Maelstrom they did a really good job on emphasizing every ships strengths and weaknesses so it feels very balanced for me. Maybe if I were the developer i would make the dwarf cannons a little bit more reliable but they are definitely in a good viable state. Visuals
There are two maps so far and both are designed with so much love. There are little towns hanging on the cliffs, little maritime gimmicks everywhere, the player ships and minor ships are crafted with so much detail. Everything blends together perfectly. Sound/Music
It's damn high quality for being in early access for just a few days. The music sounds good and perfectly fits the setting. The sound effects are somewhat basic but being a PVP game you can determine the enemy ship just by hearing it and differentiate between races, giving you just a little bit more intel for your playstyle. TLDR
If you are looking for a smooth competitive experience with many things to unlock in a beautifully crafted maritim world you shouldnt pass up on this. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tLots of fun. Easy to pick up, hard to master. Skill is rewarded but RNG is a big factor as well. Matchmaking queues are relatively short and the matches themselves usually last between 15-20 minutes. US, EU, and Asian regions are available but I have found that I am able to play on all servers equally (Something I am not accustomed to). Latency is not an issue for the most part and the game is well optimized.
Currently three races exist. Humans, Orcs, and Dwarves (more are planned). Each racial faction has three unique ships. Humans for instance are the glass cannon types. Orcs are rammers and boarders. Dwarves are heavy hitters and tanky but slow and cumbersome. These are generalizations for the most part but I think you get the gist. I have max tiered a ship in all three factions and I can honestly tell you they all play and feel completely different from each other. There is a ship to match different playstyles. Some prefer to zip around like speedsters, others prefer to bombard from afar, and others still prefer to go toe-to-toe and trade ramming and point-blank barrages.
NPC ships roam the seas and provide you a buff to your own ship once sunk that lasts the entire duration of the match. These stack and one can easily buff themselves to monstrous numbers simply by avoiding players and hunting the respawning npc ships. When you sink another player, you can pick up all their accumulated boons as well. Which means by the end of the match when only a few remain, players are usually pretty buffed up with stacks of extra dmg, armor, speed, etc. Combat is fast and furious and a LOT of FUN. I enjoy switching between ships and alternating playstyles.
This game has a promising future and is already very enjoyable in its current state. There is a progression system in place and you can earn Captains (each has a unique ability) and Shipmates (extra bonuses of varying quality) that provides a level of customization to your ship (along with the ship upgrades themselves). Anyways, if you enjoy fast and furious combat and the fantasy naval setting then I highly recommend this game. See you on the Seven Seas!!!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I played it when it first came out and people would play all the time, my computer broke so I stopped playing it. I can't remember the last time I played a game some much in one sitting. I'm a game h0re and can't seem to stay loyal but the booty in this game is so phat I stayed on it for 8 hours straight. I don't think this will be a 10/10 or an "Overwhelmingly Positive" title but it's pretty fun to me. You get into the matches really quick, I don't notice much lag and to my surprise I just saw there's a party feature and this whole time I've only been double teamed once. I don't know if that's because the game's just new or what but I am loving this free for all fighting !!
Orc ships seem to be strong AF and fast, and Dwarf ships are tanky AF and seem to ram me to death. I maxed out the 2nd Human ship and I don't ever see none of these human ships really killin' nobody so I think I spent my money in the wrong place, Although, I'm freakin' holdin' my own with this maxed out Lv2 Human ship and it really was because I finally understood my abilities and learned to kite. Humans have...I'm not quite sure what they excel in really most of the time it's Orcs and Dwarves that are the killers.
Real quick, tips I learned before I forget...
Abilities 1-3 on your hotkey + Spacebar (It's your Ultimate ability but you have to have a captain equipped)
1. Attacks the players health.
2. Attacks the players sails (slows them down)
3. Attacks the players crew (if the enemy has no crew and you have a crew battle they take direct damage)
Right Click - Hook Attempt (If successful you engage in crew battle, automated combat on ships by AI you can't see. You can still fire cannons.)
Space Bar- Ultimate and varies upon what captain you have equipped. 3 Captains per race.
That's all I got for now. It's really fun. The end of the map gets smaller like PUBG and you don't want to be in the black sea. Hope you sink you soon !! ^_^\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tThe 24 hour peak for this game (today 7/8/2018) is less than the 20 dollars it costs to buy - this should be a big enough hint to stay away for now. The game is MASSIVELY under-populated, and as there is no campaign and it is a purely multi-player experience... its dead.
That said, I had a blast playing this game, and there is a huge market out there for a game like this if properly executed and released. I really liked this game overall, but just sort of gradually stopped playing it (apparently like everyone else who got it). The devs were/are active, and would participate in the chat in-game, which was a huge plus for me as it seemed they were listening to the community and wanted to keep improving the experience. However, now there is no community at all for them to support (or to support them) and I'm going to venture a guess as to why:
Its simple. Boarding ruins the game, and the experience for every player. Anyone who bought this game or even wanted to play it and put it on their wishlist had one thing in mind: sea battles! Pirates versus the king's ships in a big cannonball fight! It is such a great idea, and is sorely under-represented in the modern market, whether you lean PVP or single player games. I think we can all remember having a great time with AC: Black Flag - that game nailed ship to ship combat. This game is SO CLOSE that it really hurts to leave a negative review... but the cannon play is not this game's weakness.
The failure of this game is to allow boarding of other ships, and have that sink your ship. I have, MANY TIMES, been at basically full health (hull, sails and crew, full health all around) and been boarded by a fast orc ship and just SUNK AND LOST! In a battle royale game, getting cheesed this massively hard is ridiculous and to have the devs stand by this bad decision is unforgivable. It is massively unfun, and I even heard many times people who played a boarding build also thought it was boring and cheap to win this way. Hence the massive loss of players over time, and the now dead game. Boarding would have been ok to me if your ship was under 50% hull or your sails were destroyed, or some of your crew already dead so they couldn't resist well, but no, the fastest orc ship WAS the whole ENTIRE META of the game, to swoop in and board and sink any ship just because you are faster and stack boarding buffs on your crew. Really just the lamest ♥♥♥♥ ever, and I can't believe the devs A) never saw the overall lameness of the mechanic or B) reacted to the player exodus and make changes. As I said, unforgivable.
I wish the dev team and the game all the luck in the world. I really hope they can turn it around, they had a winning idea. Letting people instagib is a bad idea though, and when it is really lame and not a skill based instagib (i.e. a snipe or something) players just aren't going to eat it. It leaves a bad taste in their mouths, especially when they can't respawn, its BR so you are just done for that round. Sad to leave this review, had some epic fun games here (and even won a few!). The game is a mash up or an arcade ship brawler with battle royale flavouring and sprinkled with a meta that allows you to upgrade or purchase new ships in between matches. It drops you in with 15 other players to battle it out in a large enough map with features such as whirlpool and random sea creatures that can mix into the pvp.

-Gameplay is what it says on the tin (fast paced ship brawle)
-Variety in ship mechanics

I spend a lot of time playing early access games and it's refreshing to come across one that's so polished and has such experienced developers behind it. The gameplay is a blast. It's easy to grasp but difficult to master, and it appeals to a variety of play styles (ramming, grappling and slaying crew, shooting cannons from range, etc.) which are all pretty well-balanced thanks to player feedback. The game is gorgeous. Just sailing around the map you can appreciate all the care and attention that went into building the Maelstrom world.
The player base is extremely small at the moment which can make it difficult to fully experience the game, but the developers seem to have a plan that they are sticking to, and I'm absolutely confident a game like this will take off.

It's too bad because it is a fairly fun game (against AI at least), not sure what the issue is with bringing in players. I am going to have to give it a negative review and not recommend it because the game obviously is meant to be played with/against other players mainly, and even though it was entertaining for a short while it was because I had thought I was besting other players, when I finally realized they were AI all along I felt a bit swindled and no longer had fun playing it.

Saw this on Worth a buy on youtube (love you mack) and decided to look deeper into this game. After what seemd like a "oh boy another battle royale game!" turned into "omg this looks intense!" and having just played a few hours. Seeing the roadmap the developers have in place, the different ships and factions with different playstyles. I've been saying i wanted a "world of tanks" esq game for a long time now, this suits that, plus is battle royale. Plus pve for the begining stages of the games. All in all i really enjoy this and can't wait to see where this game goes.
graphics: awesome. i was playing on high but because of frames have had to drop it to low (gtx 960 2gbvram.)
controls: easy, simple, smooth
gameplay: action packed with some quick strategic thinking, map awarness, and tacticle choice of combat. while being fast paced!
sound: 7?10. good at moments, find it too much of the same. Would like if the orc cannons sounded different, they sound too much alike. But what can i ask for its a caonnon all the same. Really good meaty noise.
all in all for the money this game is 100% worth as long as the community doesn't die. low playerbase on day one (to be expected) really hoping this grows in popularity. its like all those really good free to play games, but without the pay to win aspect. just what ive been looking for. highly recommend.

\n\n\t\t\t\tgraphics: awesome. i was playing on high but because of frames have had to drop it to low (gtx 960 2gbvram.)
controls: easy, simple, smooth
gameplay: action packed with some quick strategic thinking, map awarness, and tacticle choice of combat. while being fast paced!
sound: 7?10. good at moments, find it too much of the same. Would like if the orc cannons sounded different, they sound too much alike. But what can i ask for its a caonnon all the same. Really good meaty noise.
all in all for the money this game is 100% worth as long as the community doesn't die. low playerbase on day one (to be expected) really hoping this grows in popularity. its like all those really good free to play games, but without the pay to win aspect. just what ive been looking for. highly recommend.

It's a fairly small community at the moment but with new players comes more ideas and things for the developers to work with. If you're looking for a game to sail around in a ship and fight in an arena style battle game, this is a game you should probably check out. The developers are very active with it's player base and are quick to respond to suggestions, bugs reports, and things of that nature. I honestly haven't played a game where the developers are this interactive with it's players that are always trying to find things to make the game better while still working on upcoming content. I see reviews popping up from time to time about "dead game" or "things are buggy or inconsistant but it's just not true. Sure there are bugs or glitches that happen to some people from time to time but it's a video game.....they all have issues from time to time but the difference is this development team reacts to comments well and offers updates to let us know what to expect or if fixes were found, etc.
Side note......a lot of the negative reviews at the time they were posted are from people who literally didn't spend a lot of time in the game and offered zero constructive feedback. People are quick to bash a game because its not what they expected or come with all these bugs or problems that just aren't true. The only thing in some of the negative comments that is true is the player base is smaller than most games but people have to realize this game hasn't been marketed or advertised yet because it's not finished. If you decide to play this game, interact with the player base when you can and judge it on what it currently has. Each match feels engaging because you really need to think about how you're going to try to pull off a win. Aside from the intensity of the matches, it's also great for some dumb fun, in the sense that I would occasionally find myself in an all-out brawl right next to a massive monster that emerged from the water, who also wanted us dead.
Lots of fun, and I can't wait to see what they add, but for an early access game it feels like there's quite a bit of depth here in customization already.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tAfter 100 hours, and still going, I can tell you this game is definitely worth it. Ship battles are top tier and more about strategy than anything. A unique pace to a battle royale game and highly addicting. When you max out your ships it's like watching them transform from a mouse to a lion, and progression is at a steady pace. I highly recommend this game. Thier are some cons, like balancing and progression once you've maxed out all your ships, but the devs are some of the greatest i've seen in a game. They've respond to individuals in their discord unlike most devs, and they are tweaking balancing every day and are planning to add a new race to increase progression. This game is top tier and has no bugs, as i've seen, and it's still in early access.Also the game has intresting world and lore I would like to know more about.
