You spend 30% of your time rewinding videos which considering total “playtime” really adds up. You literally going to spend a few hours rewinding videos. Then you watch people stare at camera in silence for ages. Nothing is happening. Then things start progressing and you think “finally” but it plateaus shortly after. There is no sustained intrigue, no rewarding feeling as you uncover clues. Some videos are so mundane and boring there’s literally nothing to be extracted from them. Overall this game is a soul killing drag.
Plus it feels like the game is tailored towards men and as a woman I felt uncomfortable with this many sexualised moments that really didn’t add much to the already poor story. \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tDavid Smith is a repulsive martyr. And an unfaithful one, too. I am not speaking of his social persona, as that has already been thoroughly pilloried in Telling Lies. We will discuss something else: is David an atheist? If not, what is he ultimately worshipping?
First, it is impossible not to mention what represents David: FBI agent, intelligence officer, spy, murderer, insubordinate subordinate, unfaithful husband... all of these are true, and naturally, he excelled at almost all the roles he chose. That is a remarkable thing; it allowed him to camouflage himself into the exact image he wanted to parade before everyone. That masquerade was so perfect it made one believe that even after peeling away every layer of skin, his humanity remained completely intact. David belongs to the human race, not to any deity or faith; his ego is evaluated by society, by the judgment of those around him, or, extending further, by those who possess the video clips he recorded. A complete and spine-chillingly perfect performance.
David is not an atheist, disregarding the purely theological perspective, of course. The deity within David’s innermost being is vastly stranger than any records or assertions we have ever documented about some ancient, primeval being that existed before any religious faith. He worships human beings; yes, his gods are malleable, insignificant, and corporeal lumps of flesh, entities that truly exist, can be touched, and have stood firmly on this earth for hundreds of thousands of years. A man with faith is nothing special, perhaps David knew that, too. A man capable of feigning that he believes in nothing is also not uncommon, such people have certainly existed. David refused to choose the mundane, David craved being different. Therefore, he chose to be unfaithful.
Perhaps some might say, what does unfaithfulness matter compared to all the atrocities David has committed? No, I can assure you that, at least for a man like him, this was undoubtedly the greatest act he could perform as a vassal. Nothing gave David more ecstasy than the sensation of betraying his own faith; when he believed he truly held a certain position in the relationship between himself and the one to whom he had surrendered everything, that addictive, intoxicating feeling propelled his subsequent actions. It also culminated in the glorious finale at the end of the game: when David got to die for the love of his life, for a sacrifice he believed served to protect the interests of all humanity. That is truly fascinating: he was both Abraham and Isaac, both the sacrificed and the one who chose to sacrifice, both a tragic hero and a Knight of Faith. If Kierkegaard could have seen David, would he have written a new chapter dedicated to men like him, those he inadvertently overlooked without passing judgment? We will never have the answer.
David’s sacrifice of his own life was not an impulsive, thoughtless act. His entire journey up the mountain was depicted clearly and linearly in chronological order. From Mike (his superior), Emma (his wife), Ava (his lover), Max (his cam-chat partner)... and later, humanity, represented by Star and Alba (his daughters), David bestowed upon each of them different sacrifices. From forsaking his identity, harming the lives of others, betraying his old beliefs, and relinquishing the ability to tell the truth... all the way to his death, every piece of his humanity was offered up to construct the sacrificial altar David had always yearned for. And more damnably, despite always being in such a state of readiness, that megalomaniac came to realize that his gods were not strong enough, not grand enough, not 'worthy' enough to receive the offering he wanted to present.
And so, David chose adultery. That path was successful, wasn't it? Everyone in Telling Lies has received and continues to receive the gift that David left behind. Someone might ask, why adultery and not outright betrayal? If they do, they have vastly underestimated the baseness buried deep within the flesh of that wannabe martyr. He reveres every human being he lays eyes on, not just one, but all of them. He cannot betray anyone, because doing so would defile his love. Yes, his mechanism of faith operates through self-deprivation, not accumulation. He already possessed what he always desired; he did not need to search for it elsewhere. His sole task now was to sacrifice, to dedicate himself, and to prove it to humanity, anyone would do, so long as they were human, the very deity he pined for every night.
And we, the ones who bear witness to the masterpiece David completed, are all part of his grand sacrifice.
