I really wanted to explore the story, and thought that once I got deeper in, I'd have the motivation to finish the game. Unfortunately, every game mechanic is so tedious and frustrating that it eventually diminished any remaining curiosity I had for the story and characters. Games are supposed to pull you in over time; this is the first game I've played that not only did the opposite but left me feeling like I wasted my time. I love exploration games. I do not like having to explore the same areas over and over and being hit with disproportionate penalties for failing to time something precisely or perfectly maneuver my ship.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

My Steam playtime doesn’t really show that, because I’ve already spent hundreds of hours with the game on console before buying it again here. I’ve finished it, explored pretty much everything there is to explore, and somehow I still find myself wanting to return to it.
The strange thing is that Outer Wilds is incredibly difficult to recommend properly, because the less you know before playing it, the better.
At its core, it is a game about curiosity. There are no traditional upgrades, no levels to grind and barely anything stopping you from going almost anywhere from the very beginning. Your actual progression is knowledge. You explore because you want to understand what happened, how everything connects, and eventually what you are supposed to do with everything you’ve learned.
That sounds simple, but the way all of those discoveries slowly connect is something I haven’t really experienced in another game.
What stayed with me most, though, wasn’t the puzzles or even the exploration itself. It was what the game ultimately had to say.
Outer Wilds deals with things ending, with the fact that some things simply cannot be prevented, and with what that means for the value of everything that came before. It could very easily have felt hopeless or nihilistic, but for me it somehow does the opposite. The fact that something ends doesn’t make it meaningless. In a strange way, it is part of what gives it meaning in the first place.
Very few games have ever made me genuinely stop and think about my own life after putting the controller down. Outer Wilds did.
It also manages to create this incredible mixture of loneliness, wonder, fear and comfort. One moment you’re completely alone somewhere in space trying to understand something that happened long before you arrived, and not much later you can find something incredibly small and human that makes the whole universe feel a little less empty.
I don’t think Outer Wilds is necessarily going to work for everyone. You need to be willing to explore simply because you’re curious, read what you find and accept that the game often won’t tell you exactly where to go next. If that doesn’t appeal to you, I can understand why someone might bounce off it.
But if it does click with you, I think it can become something much more memorable than just another game you completed.
I wish I could experience Outer Wilds for the first time again.

Caught it on a Steam sale and just started playing. It was after about 7-8 hours that I actually realised that I just liked being in the universe. I enjoyed travelling, I enjoyed the gameplay mechanics, I enjoyed the story. It was really really fun.
Then I reached the end and I didn't have the same feelings as others did... at first. I finished the story and I thought I enjoyed it but then I went on about the rest of my day. As the day progressed, I found myself thinking of Outer Wilds constantly, the gameplay and the story. Then I put on the main menu theme on repeat, continuing to think about the game and it was a few hours later that I had realised how much of an effect this game had on me.
Everyone experiences things differently but this game is genuinely one to be experienced at least once, as blind as possible. I had no idea what I signed up for when I bought the game but I finished it with an amazing experience and just saying. Go out, play it... and enjoy the journey.

The spaceship flying is a little tricky at first, but once you figure that out the universe is yours to explore. The only motivation is finding out what happen, and the only thing that changes is what you know about the world.
