\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tI'm going to be up front, my biggest criticisms of this game are more matters of personal preference than anything. So sorry to the dev team, you did a fine job. This is mostly to try and save people who shouldn't buy the game because it isn't for them, like me. Especially since all the other reviews seem to say to go into it blind, which is good advice, but also makes it more difficult to determine if it's the type of game you're looking for.
First and foremost, this isn't a puzzle game. Everyone uses words like "mystery", which my dumb brain auto-corrected to "puzzle". So a puzzle's what I was expecting and a puzzle's not what I got. There's still a definite mental aspect to it, but it's less of a Rubik's cube, more of a scavenger hunt.
Second, it's got a couple of skill tests for flying from a limited first person perspective and the flyback after failure is a killer. The challenges themselves aren't *that* hard, but I wasn't expecting it and I'm reeeeaaaally bad at that kinda thing. First two minutes of each loop consists of getting in your ship and slapping on the auto-pilot to get to the planet you want to go to, then twiddling your thumbs until you get there, which got old really fast for me and my poor spatial awareness.
And finally, the world and story just didn't click for me like it seems to have for others. The story and the setting are clearly supposed to invoke a sense of awe as well as wonder, with allusions to the majesty of nature, the vastness of space, and quickly introducing a lost civilization of vast technology. But... there are like, a dozen people in the solar system, and each planet is at most a few city blocks worth of real estate. I want to be clear, a sprawling world map does not make a game better if the devs don't know how to use it and this seemed like a perfectly fine number of polygons for the the the game they had made. The problem isn't that I wanted more space to traverse, the problem is that I was getting a lot of narrative dissonance between what I was seeing and what the story was telling me I was seeing. The game was telling me about a huge, mysterious world, but gave me planets where I could have jogged around the equator for an afternoon warm-up.

The story and world-building in Outer Wilds are incredibly good. Even though I played using a keyboard, the controls very responsive and had no issues navigating the environments. The central gameplay mechanic the time loop that resets every 22 minutes gives the experience a truly unique feeling. I still remember my first time entering Dark Bramble on a friend's recommendation, it was an "unforgettable" experience (yeah...). For players who love exploration driven by a mysterious premise and don't mind a bit of horror, this is one of the best games out there.The Friction of Discovery (Negatives)
The game features a non-linear world, which is part of its charm, but it can be a double-edged sword. Personally, I found that combining non-linear exploration with very linear, specific puzzles wasn't quite my cup of tea. My personal approach was to "randomly walk" and explore all the planets first, then use the ship’s rumor log to try and solve the puzzles, but I eventually felt a sense of frustration. While the game presents a sense of total freedom, the puzzles actually have very specific answers scattered across a vast map. This makes the "freedom" feel arbitrary, as you are often just hunting for one specific clue to progress.Final Verdict
My first six hours were a blast, starting with my character dying in the first two minutes because I tried to jump into a geyser on Timber Hearth (my bad). However, after that initial magic wore off, the experience became a bit painful. If you enjoy the "needle in a haystack" style of puzzle-solving where you must find one specific hint in a massive world, you will love this. I am writing this review about 2 years after completing the base game. I have since not found a better game. Outer Wilds is in nature not a content-heavy game, but it does take a decent amount of time to figure things out, so be ready for a challenge. If I can describe Outer Wilds in the shortest way possible; it feels like that next level nostalgia you get of a calm, summer day. This game cannot be replayed, yet the emotions it leaves with you are beyond comprehension. This is no ordinary video game. Outer Wilds is one of the key examples of why video game development is also an art form. Big kuddos to the creative team behind this masterpiece. No other game combines action-adventure, science fiction and (mild) horror quite as well as this one. This game constantly drives you to discover new things, whilst remaining completely unobtrusive, because the entire gameplay and sequence of events depend entirely on you. There’s something very interesting about this freedom. Especially because the game still manages to show you a path when you don’t have one of your own. The game is breathtakingly beautiful, has one of the finest stories I know, and gives you the time of your life.

This game is an experience, something absolutely immaculate that be in its DLC, music, gameplay (with some flaws here and there) and overall story.
Beautiful writing, amazing world building and everything else explains my absolute love of this game.
You must, without exception, at least play this once in your life. After all, you will only be able to play it once. Never again. You can't forget something so good, not in a million years. You will see what I mean when you play.
