As an original player since 2020 when Phasmophobia was first HUGE. And this review could just be me slipping into a nostalgia trip. I have to say that I'm impressed by the dev team and their commitment to the game. However. I do feel that the difference between it being just a few person team back when it launched, where it was just a few people working together and this was their lovechild. In comparison to now, where I feel there are too many bugs per update, with features nobody asked for. The events each year aren't new and original, just rinse and repeat with decorations added to the map that make it harder to see things with certain equipment. It's just not the same, and my love for the game is mostly gone.
Another thing is the constant additions of new ghosts. Which I'm sure some people like, some don't. However, as an experienced player in the game who managed to wittle things down to single evidence runs and be able to know a ghost by its tells, probably a year and a half to two years ago. Adding more ghosts into the mix just doesn't feel right. Not for my sake, but for the sake of new players trying to learn. Taking in a crucifix for your safety, but then there's the risk of it displeasing one of the new ghosts as soon as the crucifix enters the room. There's a ghost that gets mad when you stand near it. Well how are you meant to know where the ghost is when you first enter the house? What if it's by the door?
The character customization felt like something the community wanted for the longest time. However, with how much it was hyped up, and how long we waited for it. I feel like the final product they gave us was far from what was expected from all. Animations that didn't work, couldn't see items because your hand was so far away from your face. It just felt too messy and half done.
In terms of the maps. Some of the reworks are so nice and I love what they have done with them. But some, I felt just didn't hit the same. Grafton being reworked with so much clutter and so dark, regardless of what level flashlight you took in. Your line of sight being blocked in all directions and not knowing where the ghost had spawned when it started a hunt and that you could just run into it. I miss the old Asylum. I think I could count on both hands how many times I've played Sunny Meadows since it was released. I get what the devs are trying to go for, keeping in the fear factor. But making maps so dark that even an upgraded flashlight barely illuminates anything. The game just doesn't hit the same spot like it did 5 years ago...\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

- After every update of the game, my brightness shrinks to 10%, my audio is muted and my cursor vanishes and size and opacity are decreased to 0
- On Tanglewood, Ouija Board is invisible for me, even if someone picks it up
- During the hunt, I wasn't able to open the door of the closet to hide on Tanglewood
- If someone picks an item, regardless of the map, that item can easily stay on the floor
- Items are glitching through the floor, regardless of the map
- My companions cannot see when I light the incense
- The incense glitches through the map assets on Camp Woodwind
- My ghost walks through the salt, the salt stays normal, not Wraith but Obake
- Kicks friends out to the main menu with "connection timed out"
- Can't switch my Sound Recorder to Tier 3 in some games
- Got killed by a ghost through the wall on Nell's Diner behind the vending machines while the ghost was in the closet
- Animations are the worst thing that could happen to this game. So bugged that it's beyond any comprehension

Phasmophobia is genuinely scary at times, and I genuinely mean that. Not a single one of my buddies has gotten away without screaming at least once during this game. Despite the game having an overall rather repetitive gameplay loop, it doesn't "feel" repetitive AT ALL. Every match, even if you're playing the same map over and over, genuinely feels different from the last.

But the devs spend most of their time 'reworking' and replacing all the maps that players love instead of making new small maps. One of the things this game needed was more small maps. The large maps are awful to play. Stop replacing the original maps. I understand you're making them more atmospheric, and I'll give credit where it's due. They do a pretty good job of it. But I've been playing this game since launch, and love the OG maps. Even with their many update iterations done over time. But just make new maps. Consider a selection page so players can choose to select the version of the maps before you updated them. This would also double the maps. It could be like 14 Tanglewood, and 17 Tanglewood. Same house model, BUT DIFFERENT maps. Similar to what you did with the campgrounds. Took the OG, then made a different, smaller playable version of it. DO THAT INSTEAD OF REPLACING ALL THE OG MAPS. They've changed the UI like 3 times, and left the current one, which is awful. Looks like they're finally working on custom characters after 6 years of everyone begging for it. About time. But they'll likely botch it. Death animations is something that should have been done years ago as well. Your priorities are completely out to lunch. Everytime we come to revisit Phasmo, another map we love is replaced. Regretfully, me and my group of friends are done with phasmo.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

While the map reworks have been great in my opinion, the animations are godawful and despite having over 20 people working on this game, updates seemingly have little to no quality assurance. Bugs, sometimes gamebreaking, have been in the game for years without fixes despite multiple people (including streamers) reporting said bugs.

Ever since they overhauled the game it has become unplayable and every time they "Fix it" they break it more. loading into maps Audio keeps breaking now and then where i can hear others but they cannot hear me so rather than the emersion we end up just going in Discord voice. Equipment bugs where i sometimes cannot see what other players in same map are placing or dropping, such as EMF and Crucifixes and even the clipboards in lobby.
Ghost being in different locations when doing ghost event for players even in same map/room (I.e one player saw it in middle of room and another was seeing it in corner of room when playing same map together)
Video Camera showing different angles to different players(three of us saw it on stand as normal, one saw Camera angle as if it was lying on ground having been knocked over)
Summoning Circle seems to be broken as no one could light the final candle despite high sanity and it not having even been used yet during the game.
Overall i loved Phasmophobia, the old Phasmophobia. but the game is now broken and i would rather they revert it back and just add new maps now and then rather than overhaul the old ones and entire game as it's running the risk of no longer being the Game i paid for that i had fun with friends on.

I've spent a good amount of time with Phasmophobia, and while the core concept is still excellent, I can't recommend it in its current state. This review isn't meant to attack the developers—they've clearly put a lot of work into the game—but many long-standing issues continue to frustrate a large part of the player base.
The biggest problem is the slow pace of meaningful updates. New content often takes a long time to arrive, while long-requested features and quality-of-life improvements remain unfinished. Roadmaps have shifted multiple times, making it difficult to know when promised features will actually be released.
Performance and optimization are another concern. Even on capable hardware, players frequently report inconsistent frame rates, stuttering, and longer loading times than expected. Performance can also vary significantly between updates.
The progression system has become more grind-heavy than it used to be. Unlocking equipment and progressing through prestige can feel repetitive, especially for experienced players who already understand the game's mechanics. Instead of encouraging experimentation, progression sometimes feels like an unnecessary barrier.
Equipment balancing also remains inconsistent. Some items feel far more useful than others, leaving certain tools rarely worth bringing. This reduces variety and can make loadouts feel repetitive.

Don't get me wrong: my friends and I had many good hours with this game. However, the way the developers treat their community has become unacceptable.
They consistently overpromise and underdeliver. The most critical element of a horror game—the horror itself—has been delayed for over five years. The excuse of "it's just a small team of 2–3 people" no longer flies. The game generated massive revenue, yet instead of hiring extra help to accelerate development, progress remains incredibly slow.
To make matters worse, they actively refuse to allow mod support, preventing the community from fixing the issues themselves. It feels like a massive disservice to the fans who supported them since Early Access.
The latest update was the final straw. It broke core mechanics, and the new models look completely rushed and unpolished. I don't want to hate this game—I genuinely don't. But the player base is feeling cheated, and people are leaving. Save your money and wait until they actually deliver on their promises. They seriously need a reality check.

\n\n\t\t\t\tThey consistently overpromise and underdeliver. The most critical element of a horror game—the horror itself—has been delayed for over five years. The excuse of "it's just a small team of 2–3 people" no longer flies. The game generated massive revenue, yet instead of hiring extra help to accelerate development, progress remains incredibly slow.
To make matters worse, they actively refuse to allow mod support, preventing the community from fixing the issues themselves. It feels like a massive disservice to the fans who supported them since Early Access.
The latest update was the final straw. It broke core mechanics, and the new models look completely rushed and unpolished. I don't want to hate this game—I genuinely don't. But the player base is feeling cheated, and people are leaving. Save your money and wait until they actually deliver on their promises. They seriously need a reality check.
Look at what the NO MANS SKY devs did over 10 years. THAT is community service!

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tBack when this game first came out, I absolutely loved playing it. But over time, I've watched the game deteriorate into such a complicated, convoluted mess. The UI system become more confusing and less intuitive, more ghosts are added, yet you can barely tell the difference between behaviors, so the new additions feel rather meaningless. I've had Shades who act like Demons, Poltergeists who act like Shades, none of it makes sense anymore.
Maybe for brand new players who never knew what the game used to be could enjoy it for what it is now, since they don't know what they are missing out on, but I honestly can't recommend it whatsoever. The game feels like a shell of what it used to be.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Its pretty funny with friends over all i just wish that this game could have more stuff in it, also incase your wondering how scary this game is: i'd give it a 6/10 with multiplayer and 8/10 in single player. If there could be more evidence or like things to do then id give it 9/10, but my over all rating is 7/10
