\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tIf you are here purely for a great gameplay experience with your friends, you may find yourself a little disappointed. Realistically, I'd say that Raft is a 5/10 game that I am a little hard-pressed to recommend to anyone. It feels cheaply cobbled together, with insane levels of jankiness and clipping, cut corners, lack of quality testing, and the most rudimentary gameplay loop under the sun. And yet, this game has some eldritch power that causes my friends and I to undergo major psychosis and delirium while playing. Its a really strange experience, and one that I love, even if the game is a little dubious in its make.
On an objective level, Raft is very poorly put together. Like, the main gameplay loop is just drifting through the water, sometimes completely directionless. You just collect materials to build the raft, as well as food and water to sustain yourself. The open sea might be a cool thematic choice, but it also allows the devs to starve you of any real content or landmarks. You'll run into generic islands, maybe some sunken rafts as well. But that's really about it for about 95% of the time. It's very barren, especially in a drought of resources where you just don't get to do anything. For a lot of people it probably isn't enough. Occasionally, you might find a big story dungeon with some unique enemies and blueprints. Those parts can be quite fun. But after you clear them out, you're back to the endless expanse of sea.
Furthermore, there is a lack of quality all throughout this game. When I can be sitting there, not moving nor interacting with anything, and then the shark can just clip halfway through my raft, its not a great look. Not just the shark, but the other sea life (god forbid its the huge whale that will actually just steal you from your raft), or the flotsam that litters the sea. Even past the clipping issues, the game just has a B-tier feeling to it. All the animations feel pretty poor, and lack any sort of oomph to them. They're not really the highlight of the game for me.
With all this in mind, it sounds like my review doesn't have much to say. I have issues with both the major and minor details of this game, from the game design foundations to the extra polish. So why do I recommend Raft? One reason: this game allows you and your friends to undergo mass psychosis with ease. I am not sure I can truthfully describe this phenomenon that occurs when playing this game. It feels like you've been drained of all energy, starving and thirsting, on a deserted island, but with your friends. Every single time I tried playing this in recent memory, we devolve into dopey giggling about stupid ♥♥♥♥ we think of. It is the funniest ♥♥♥♥ ever and then I forget the next day because it all felt like a fever dream. Its not something that just any game can do. Six hours into my first evening, I was completely hooked. I even dreamt about the game that night.
My first run ended because I didn't notice the thirst bar. Surrounded by an entire ocean, I naturally tried drinking seawater. Didn't end well.
My second run ended when I crashed into an island without enough materials to craft a paddle, while a shark slowly ate my house. Lovely neighbourhood.
Third time's the charm, though. Every disaster teaches you something, every upgrade feels earned, and things that initially terrify you eventually become minor inconveniences. There's always something to gather, improve or explore, and the game happily lets you progress at your own pace.
The game could do a better job explaining the basics. I spent HOURS believing fishing required special bait because the interface kept suggesting I attach some. Instead of simply fishing to feed myself, I spent hours praying for an island or a floating crate that contained some potatoes.
If you love that explore, gather, return, craft, improve loop, this game is an absolute gem. One of those rare games where you sit down for an hour and somehow lose an entire weekend.

\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tHere's a game where you start with almost nothing, floating in the middle of the ocean on a tiny raft, and slowly turn that little platform into a home. You gather materials, craft equipment, explore islands and reefs, research new technology, grow food, and try to keep everyone alive while a shark occasionally decides to take a bite out of your raft. LOL The best part for me is that you're figuring this all out together, so even the smallest problems can turn into some of the funniest memories. At first, everyone is figuring out what they're supposed to be doing then it becomes a battle of resourcefulness and who gets to drink the boiled water first before you pass out from dehydration. But bob decides to say who cares and drinks the salt water instead. You learn who you can rely on, who is going to remember to gather something important, who picks the flowers, and who is absolutely going to swim off toward an island without telling anyone. You are forced to think about what you're using and what you're going to need later. It also makes crafting feel rewarding because you can see the difference between having almost nothing and gradually having the equipment you need to survive. Crop plots were probably my least favorite task of the game, but I was fine because some of my friends genuinely enjoyed taking care of them. I loved building the raft the most. The research table is another system I really liked. Instead of simply handing you every crafting recipe from the beginning, the game encourages you to discover materials and use them to learn what you can make. You gradually build up your knowledge and unlock better equipment. I think that it is a particularly good way to introduce someone to a survival game progression because it teaches you to experiment. If you don't know what something does, you find it, research it, and figure out how it can help you. I'd love to see this idea of discovery even further. More meaningful decisions, less simply following the next objective.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

I feel like it's a game for everyone, whether the player is story-hungry or a survival fanatic or a chill builder (as chill as you can be with a shark constantly chewing away at your raft...); there is truly a place for many, if not every, type of gamer.
A note worth adding: I'd recommend starting with a friend, whether the friend has played before or not. It can be a little overwhelming at first for new players starting out on their own, but not to say that it's not enjoyable solo! Playing Raft by yourself definitely is an extra challenge ;)

The gameplay becomes boring after a while, because you're always gathering the same items over and over again, some of which have no use for a long time (after 140 hours of play, I still don't know what to do with the Big Clams, the Dry Bricks or the silver underwater plant thingy). I suppose they will be useful at some point, but when, and how many of them will I need? I also don't like to see the water regularly inundating the building. It doesn't damage anything, but it's a terrible fail for the immersion.

The only downside is the poorly developed options for developing the island—there's a lack of a crane, electrical wires, and installing pipes through walls, although the latter can be worked around.
