While everyone else is playing Slay the Spire II in 2026, I thought why not try the original game first?
It turns out that Slay the Spire universe is way bigger, and the Ascension system is similar to Balatro, or should I say Balatro got its ascension idea from here?
Hmm anyway, 38 hrs in, I almost unlocked everything for Ironclad, haven't started other three characters yet, ascension level 2, max is 20? wow~

Even once getting into higher difficulties, and the grind for the next ascensions started, it has maintained it's allure (An ascension is like a "prestige" mode where you can make the game more difficult at each step). The devs have put in a good amount of effort to balance cards and the different characters you can play. I will say the difficulty ramps up significantly at around the half way point of ascensions, so it can get a bit grindy at this point. This game is well worth the money, even at it's base price of $25.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It doesn't feel like you are rewarded for playing this game - and it also feels like whatever happens to your run feels more randomized than as a result of strategy. I've tried to get into this game multiple times, I had a few really good runs that just ended up from me forcing my momentum to stop as I've hit an immovable object.

Sometimes you just die because the enemy decided to do 50 damage in one turn and all you have is attack cards. Sometimes, you'll have the perfect build, and still end up dying because any single encounter could be something made perfectly to kill your build. The best thing to do it to not play this game. It certainly offers a large pool of cards and characters with unique playstyles and abilities, allowing the player to experiment with different builds and tactical approaches. The difficulty curve is well balanced, giving players time to learn its mechanics before gradually becoming more challenging, while the various modes add a few extra hours of playtime. Yet, it never truly impressed me. First of all, it’s not really a roguelike (as advertised), and there’s almost no continuity between runs except for a few cards and items you unlock. There’s no effort to tell even the slightest story or include meaningful lore behind the characters and enemies. The visuals feel generic and the animations are too static. Most importantly, it doesn’t feel like it offers anything genuinely new or refreshing to the deck‑building genre. It’s solid and well built, but I honestly don’t understand the buzz around it.
