A lot of the maps you play in will take hours of real life time to play through. There is no option to speed up time, and there is no "save and retry" option. If you fail, you must play this map again from the beginning. For some of the end game maps, this can be ~4 hours. If you fail and want to try again, that's another ~4.

I don't have the patience to replay games where a tiny mistake can cause complete failure. What's the point even? \n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\tOk, so this review is for other people like me. People that enjoy colony building and swarm survival, but find immense tedium, hyper micro-management, and constant babysitting to be exhausting rather than enjoyable. They Are Billions is a game that I really wanted to love.
At its core, the concept is fantastic. Build a colony, expand your territory, gather resources, research technology, fortify your defenses, and then watch as thousands of infected come crashing into your walls. There is a genuinely great game buried in there.
The problem is that the game seems determined to make you micromanage every single part of it.
And I don't mean "there is a lot to keep track of." I mean that the game frequently turns basic colony management into a series of tiny, repetitive chores. You are constantly repositioning units. Constantly checking workers. Constantly adjusting defenses. Constantly making sure some random infected isn't attacking something important, and because the zombie is 1 pixel within your visual zone, you get no warning. Constantly giving individual units orders that feel like they should be handled by the AI.
For some people, I suspect this is the appeal. The constant attention and precision probably feels rewarding if you enjoy that level of control.
For me, it becomes exhausting.
The swarm mechanics are also a little at odds with the colony-building fantasy I was hoping for. I want to spend time developing my settlement and watching it grow into a functioning city. Instead, a huge portion of my attention is spent making sure that one ranger isn't standing five pixels too close to a horde, or that a defensive position isn't left unattended for ten seconds.
The result is a game where I frequently feel like I'm doing administrative work rather than building a colony.
And that's a shame, because when They Are Billions works, it REALLY works.
There is an incredible sense of tension when you realize a horde is approaching. Watching your defenses open fire as hundreds of infected pour toward your walls is exactly the kind of spectacle the game promises.
I just wish the game would let me enjoy those moments without requiring quite so much constant babysitting.
If you love extremely hands-on RTS gameplay, meticulous unit control, and the satisfaction of personally managing every little detail of your colony, you'll probably get a lot out of They Are Billions.
If, like me, you're primarily interested in the colony-building + zombie swarm survival combination but don't particularly enjoy extreme micromanagement, be prepared for the game to test your patience.

The mechanics of one zombie snowballing your entire colony felt too punishing. I think this is the intention of the game design though, so if the challenge of a tiny crack or error in your colony becoming an avalanche of death appeals to you, I would swap my don't recommend to recommend.
The flip side is, the matches where I won felt easy. This is a facade of course, because one mistake along the way meant I was doomed. I simply hadn't made any mistakes.
Another problem is the saving and time system. When you do make that mistake, you have to restart the entire map. No save scumming allowed here. The most frustrating aspect of this is that most of the times you don't realize your mistakes until its too late in the game. The initial waves are usually handled fairly easily and from one direction in your colony. The final waves are from every side and in 10x the amount of enemies each direction. Oftentimes, you don't realize your weakpoint until this final wave, 2 hours into the scenario and you have to start over from scratch every time. Then, once you start over, you can't speed up the clock. So you are sitting there doing nothing, waiting for resources to continue your new build.
I don't necessarily regret ALL of my 52 hours, I had fun for a decent portion of it, but I wish I was playing other games instead. Hopefully, this review saves you some time or makes you realize this is the perfect game for you.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

There is a bunch of hero missions that could be summed up to "play hidden object game guessing which of identical boxes contain the mission objective, while slowly soloing a bunch of zombies" and get stale really fast
Then there is "attack" missions that are just a tower defense mission without economy or strategy, and with limited building types compared to normal mode, that could be summed up to "defend single building attacked from 2/4 sides"
Then there are the normal base building missions, the meat of the campaign; the progression is slow (you'd be using same one or two units for good half a dozen of missions), making many missions just feel the same, arbitary population cap you need to reach makes SURE a good player can't try different tactic than "bunker up and sit down till you get to pop you need", hell, some missions made me just leave it running for next 10 minutes coz I did all mission objectives but there was arbitrary time limit slapped onto it.

Then there is "attack" missions that are just a tower defense mission without economy or strategy, and with limited building types compared to normal mode, that could be summed up to "defend single building attacked from 2/4 sides"
Then there are the normal base building missions, the meat of the campaign; the progression is slow (you'd be using same one or two units for good half a dozen of missions), making many missions just feel the same, arbitary population cap you need to reach makes SURE a good player can't try different tactic than "bunker up and sit down till you get to pop you need", hell, some missions made me just leave it running for next 10 minutes coz I did all mission objectives but there was arbitrary time limit slapped onto it.

It’s really well done, the mechanics are great, and it does a good job of building you up slowly and teaching you how to play without making it feel too hand-holdy.
I know it originally came out before the campaign, and a lot of people mainly know it for the skirmish/survival side, but I’m a campaign kind of guy and I actually really liked the campaign. If you’re the same, there’s loads to enjoy. You get upgrades, progression, new stuff to unlock, and it gives the whole thing a bit more structure.
I will say though: the later levels get tough. Really tough.
Do not assume that because you’ve got the game absolutely down pat by the end that you’re going to stroll through the last level, because I did exactly that. I thought I was ready.
I was not ready.
The final level gave me an absolute shoeing. Up and down the street. My whole colony got slaughtered beyond belief.
So, yeah. Be warned.
But honestly, brilliant fun. If you like RTS survival games, huge swarms, building defences and then desperately trying to stop everything collapsing at once, you’re going to love it.

\n\n\t\t\t\tIt’s really well done, the mechanics are great, and it does a good job of building you up slowly and teaching you how to play without making it feel too hand-holdy.
I know it originally came out before the campaign, and a lot of people mainly know it for the skirmish/survival side, but I’m a campaign kind of guy and I actually really liked the campaign. If you’re the same, there’s loads to enjoy. You get upgrades, progression, new stuff to unlock, and it gives the whole thing a bit more structure.
I will say though: the later levels get tough. Really tough.
Do not assume that because you’ve got the game absolutely down pat by the end that you’re going to stroll through the last level, because I did exactly that. I thought I was ready.
I was not ready.
The final level gave me an absolute shoeing. Up and down the street. My whole colony got slaughtered beyond belief.
So, yeah. Be warned.
But honestly, brilliant fun. If you like RTS survival games, huge swarms, building defences and then desperately trying to stop everything collapsing at once, you’re going to love it.
