The only problem I had with it was that they were hell-bent on it taking place in the US, which ruined a lot of the immersion. The location is a beautiful old-world European village with cobblestones and stone buildings/townhouses. All the references were obviously US-based but by people who don't appear to have ever been to the US. If the setting was adjusted to be European, it would fix the immersion problems. I love the atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, and the constant haunting feeling that you're being watched, and that something has gone horribly wrong. Exploring the (seemingly) empty town to find any clue you can that can solve the case at my own speed only makes it all feel more real. It has easily become one of-- if not my favorite-- horror games ever. Every time me and my wife sit down for another playthrough we get more excited than the last time, and we somehow KEEP finding new things. It even feels like some playthroughs are more creepy than others. I'll never get over how dramatically the tension changes the first time you enter the hotel, where I'm constantly looking over my shoulder even years after completing the game. Some fear just sticks with you forever. 10/10 game, and I hope everyday for another game like this one.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

It was very cool seeing the narrative unfold over the course of the game and keep track of all the people and events involved. This game is unlike anything else I've ever played (closest would be Obra Dinn).
I think the actual story is incredible, and has created quite a vivid image of the characters and events for me.
The following contains spoilers about the structure of the game, but no story spoilers.
The game often gives you the same information multiple times which works great for making sure you get it.
The gameplay that I performed and greatly enjoyed, clashes with the gameplay the game expects you to perform. Sure the game starts you off with the question of who killed Vivian Roberts, what weapon did they use, and what was their motive, but one death quickly becomes many and there are more and more mysteries to solve. The game ending by asking you to answer who killed her, what weapon did they use and (besides the cover photo, love that detail), nothing else, feels a bit disappointing. The (non-giving-up) ending spelling out to you who did it, why and how also undermines the previous puzzling a bit.
I do however think that a detective game like this one, that wants you to uncover this whole story has to make these trade-offs. You could ask the player more questions, but then you set a much different expectation and clearly define what is important and what isn't which compromises the openness. By giving the players hints and then later revealing the truth (about anything, not just the main question), more players can figure it out and as a player you can feel smart if your theories are confirmed. For example, ...

...Bernards axe case was shattered. If he had wanted to use the axe, he could have just opened it. So someone else took it. That is never acknowledged anywhere, but still led to me believing someone else must have done it. And a different player would perhaps have not just noticed certain lettering, but followed through on that before it's mentioned in-game.

The ending chase sequence wasn't great, it doesn't fit well with the rest of the game, the ending of the chase is a cute idea, and hinted at, but didn't fit the otherwise very grounded nature of the game.
On a gameplay level, I got confused where to go in every location the chase went through. In location 2, I thought I was being smart pulling up the map to check where to go, but the game wanted me to go elsewhere. I still made it through, because Janet is the tankiest Journalist alive.
In location 3, I went to the correct spot, but didn't know I was supposed to just stand there and wait, and then got killed.
The saving grace of the awful chase sequence is that it's fairly easy, and you can just try again (even if that takes out the tension*). For that reason it's a lot less offensive than it could otherwise have been. There are a lot of games that do something weird for their ending that's different from the rest of the game, I don't think I know a single game where I like that and it being easy/short/forgiving is what makes those sections ok.
*about tension, the second I turned down the music, the tension dropped so much, because an enemy that you can see and who is slower than you, is really not that scary. So for me, tension was low the first time already.
Story spoiler:
I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that the perpetrator of multiple murders and their motive was apparent very early on. In a game like this, it can be weird if there is a crazy twist that undermines the previous work, but this way it felt like I didn't uncover anything new (that was directly related to the central murder) in the latter 70% of the game, I just got proof.
Not sure how to remedy that, just something that slightly bothered me.
Finally it should be noted that this game punishes you for knowing chess notation. So if you know what e4e5 means or what you should if your opponent plays O-O-O#, this game might not be for you.
or who knows maybe this is genius world building to show us that Charles doesn't know about kNights, Chapeau, the devs have really outdone themselves this time.
Yes, this is a nitpick, still bothers me bc I could have solved a riddle earlier if I *didn't* know chess notation.
Oh, and one final nitpick, the game constantly reuses assets, which is mostly funny more the models, because everyone reads the same two books I've never heard of, has the same bathroom and the same kitchen.
The music on the other hand is very repetitive, there are different tracks for different locations, but in any given location you listen to the <20s melody and there might be silence.

Dorothy's house having welcoming music instead of the constant tense music was a great choice!

there is a very minor jumpscare, where the lights (which you don't need to see) turn off, and the electricity in a location shuts down (and there is a loud noise). I am not a fan of jumpscares, but this one helped to make the rest of the game much more tense for me, which is a probably a good thing. It even had me avoiding the place as best as I could, despite there never being non-obvious danger in this game. That only works if you don't know that of course.
(regarding being stuck, which I think was a problem twice)
I looked up how to solve something on three occasions, the two were I don't think that was my fault were mdyy formatting for some (but not all) codes, I have tried that day, the solution being dependent on the date being one of 81 days of the year that fit the format is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If you *know* that that date is the solution, sure. The player can be expected to try that eventually. But on a lock that I didn't know whether I had the combination, that multiple dates fit, in many possible formats each? I blame the game for this.
Second one was that a combination lock solution was written in reverse. For some reason.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

Not what I wanted when I bought a "detective" game about solving a cold case in an "abandoned" town. Even if that kind of thing is your jam, you won't enjoy the janky interface, jarring soundtrack, counterintuitive controls and sluggish movement speed. You'll also never turn your flashlight off, because even the buildings with clear windows somehow don't have enough light for you to see while you're in there. In a game that involves this much document reading you'd also hope for a grasp of character voice; you will not find one. Every single letter, diary, note and piece of ephemera reads as if written by the same guy. Letters and diaries read identically, too - do you write the same way in your personal notes as you do to someone you're addressing in a letter? No? Didn't think so. And does the awful scribbly handwriting font intended to make you feel like there's some character variety come with a typed translation for the player? No, no it does not.

And for about 2/3rds of the game, that delivered. I was taking notes, solving puzzles, and thoroughly enjoying my time. I, like many others, was disappointed that by the end the game just outright tells you who the killer is and reveals everything. I was even more baffled when the credits let you choose who you believe did it, like the game didn't just straight up tell you 30 seconds ago.
I also have to complain about some of the puzzles. Some of them feel almost pretentious, like the game is trying to weed out anyone who isn't a "real detective." There are two in particular that are just stupid.
There's one involving a dartboard where you find a note saying the code is the subtraction of the yellow and red darts. What isn't communicated at this point is that one of the darts is missing. I know this game can be a little... out of order, but this is just stupid. There's nothing indicating that what you're seeing is wrong, so you're left thinking you've misunderstood the assignment, when really it's just badly designed. The pacing makes this even worse, because you can be stuck here for a while, backtracking to different locations and making absolutely no progress.
There's another puzzle where you learn that a character's date of birth is the combination to a safe, but for some reason the developers thought it would be quirky to have the character write it as m/d/yyyy instead of what I assumed would be mm/dd/yy like a normal person. These situations are incredibly frustrating and almost break the immersion. Because of how the game is designed, you're going to hit these walls and completely halt your progress, only to backtrack somewhere else and still have no idea what you're missing.
With all that being said, I'd still recommend this. It was a very interesting couple of hours, and despite some of the frustrating puzzles and the ending, this game genuinely gave me a good scare at the end.

In the Painscreek Killings you arrive in a ghost town as a reporter to solve a nearly 5-year-old cold murder case. You spend your time searching the ghost town for keys, documents, news clippings, and diaries, along with solving puzzles.
If you want a detective game that does not hold you hand and you get to to all the deduction, note taking, and footwork. This game is amazing. I had a huge notepad with notes about locations and characters. Along with a fleshed out timeline of events and hypothesis.
If you are a scaredy cat like me, you may be wondering if this game is scary. There aren’t really any jumpscares that I encountered, but the game itself is very atmospheric and I felt spooked by a lot of the locations and looking over my shoulder even though I knew nothing was there. With that being said, if you are a big scaredy cat you may want to consider looking up the ending when you are getting close to it. I was really scared at the end XD But 99% the game is just detective work.
Overall the game felt extremely rewarding to me, I only needed help on a couple different parts. I loved this game and look forward to any future games made by this company.
