I thought S&Box would be a really great place to join as a developer to try and get games out and monetize them, it seemed like a good engine and as a developer a raw platform without many games to compete with. Seems great right? Nope, Instead you're going to have to deal with the multitude of problems that Facepunch themselves introduce every step of the way. Instead of just getting out of their own way, they create obvious problems where there shouldn't be any. I've spent the past 6 months entirely building and focused on S&Box and there's no way I will continue with the how they conduct the platform.
Here's just a FEW of the issues I've had to deal with.
1. No communication. At all. Especially as a developer, if you are having a problem or need assistance, clarification, or any form of support from Facepunch, you won't get it. Dead silence, every single time. Even for basic problems, they will NOT reply to anything you send them, and you're left sitting there with your project built for S&Box, on S&Box, completely crippled because Facepunch won't actually try to communicate with you.
2. Review brigading, hostile developers, and just complete slop on the platform. - You'd think making games would be a fun process and other developers would be happy to see developers bringing in more players, making good games, and be more supportive of each others work. Nope, not here. I have NEVER seen this level of hostility among other developers before. Everyone is at each others throats all the time, and large formed communities won't hesitate to brigade and mass dislike/mass negative review a game to try to get ratings tanked on the game and be less likely for players to play. It's disgusting and when I've tried to contact Facepunch about this issue, once again, completely dismissed.
3. Constant engine problems on STABLE/LIVE - ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is a miserable one, especially as a developer. You would think they would at least run tests before releasing patches. At this point it's obvious that they're vibe coding a large portion of the engine, and they aren't running a sufficient level of testing before hand. In just one month I have experienced 3 game breaking bugs that they will NOT hotfix and instead just completely breaks your game as a developer. I've had to wait over 2 weeks for a game breaking bug to be fixed that they introduced and didn't immediately revert or rollback, wasting my time, and losing me players. Unacceptable.
4. Gang mentality - You know how when you sometimes join a server on Battlefield or some other high pop game and you're having fun and it turns out you kill an admin and get banned? That's what it feels like to be on this platform. If you're familiar with Facepunch games like Rust and Garrysmod then you know how toxic those communities are. Well, it also extends to S&Box as well. There is no moderation whatsoever for the mass amount of hate that is spewed constantly from other people on this platform. If you're not part of the in-group of the platform or a developer from early on of the engine development days, you are at a disadvantage and not welcome. This platform rewards older devs rather than new ones, and they won't diversify what type of games they want out there. If you're not making a 5 second miniclip tech demo then you're building the wrong thing for this platform, and they still scratch their heads confused as to why nobody wants to buy S&Box.
I might revise this review later, but what a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ experience I've had with being on this platform. I've lost all faith in Facepunch being able to get organized or actually deliver a quality product, because they themselves are so full of themselves they can't see what's obvious in front of them.

This platform has incredibly bright ideas and people really do try when they publish a video game on here! AI slop and junk games are a natural part of the internet, like people using scripts to ruin the experience for everyone, what I like to focus on are people who actually try to make a game, and make it fun. I saw for the first time in a few months a small boost of players on Ghoul Grounds (rare), of course as I play the first match with someone, a person named Cat.jpg claimed to be a hacker and started spawning in the dev's tools all over the map, so we couldn't play. I go to another server, Cat.jpg follows, to make sure nobody can play the game together publicly, there's no fun in that. But I'm not going to take a dump on the platform its self just because bad actors like to ruin everything, I just play single player games that are actually enjoyable, or hop on a collector server. I made my own game on here, that is something that I wanted to do since I was very young, and I did, regardless of how the community felt, I'm proud of my own creation, I put a lot of personal touch into it. So just because many reviews love to look at the dark side of the moon on here, I like to look at the bright side, that creators can really create something good on here, regardless of the human equivalent of viruses that join not to play, but to destroy. I have hope this platform will create some real future gems, I'm sticking around.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

As a development platform, it's a joke compared to industry standards, and as a game, it's a joke when compared to even it's own begrudging predecessor gmod, let alone that and roblox. I genuinely don't understand what future the devs at facepunch see with the platform at this point, five years or so spent making something that feels 10% complete months after launch with no player growth, this is like the polar opposite trajectory gmod went through when it was new, and people still talk like a few updates are going to solve everything. Don't waste your 20 bucks, if you wanted roblox, play roblox, if you wanted gmod, play gmod. this caters to neither group and actively alienates everyone else. What a disappointment, I'd refund it if I could, but I can't now because I foolishly gave the benefit of the doubt and waited for it to improve past the 30 day limit, don't make my mistake.\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t

S&Box is... okay.
As the newest game from Garry Newman and the successor to Garry's Mod, I was pretty interested to see what it would be like. And honestly, it's not bad. It's just very different. It feels more like a Roblox-type game than a direct successor to Garry's Mod.
I know S&Box is not supposed to be Garry's Mod 2, and I completely understand that. But if you're going to have a sandbox game mode, you really need to improve the sandbox.
The maps are pretty bad right now. Some of them don't even have water, and the NPCs aren't great either. It just feels like the sandbox side of the game needs a lot more work.
Downloading maps and other content also takes forever. I'm obviously exaggerating when I say "years and years," but it genuinely feels way too slow sometimes.
And when you spawn something in, you have to download it first. Why not just have a proper Workshop system like Garry's Mod? Let people upload stuff, download it through the Workshop, and then have a normal Q menu that shows everything you've already installed.
That would make the whole experience so much better.
I don't hate S&Box. There's definitely a good game here, and I actually think it has a lot of potential. I just really hope the sandbox side gets some serious improvements because that's the part I'm most interested in.

As someone who has been following its development for MANY years and had high expectations for the previously marketed title as a “Garry’s Mod successor”, I feel that the game changed direction halfway through development and became a complete failed attempt at a cash grab for Facepunch Studios.
• The community wanted a more up-to-date Garry’s Mod successor. Instead, Facepunch decided halfway through development to try to recreate Roblox, which was bound to fail.
• The character design is abhorrent. Throughout development, the sausage-style characters were heavily criticised, yet the developers took little notice of the criticism. Garry has shown a strong stance on having and supporting these ugly character designs because he was fed up with attractive characters. This just shows a lack of understanding of basic game design and visual appeal. Characters and visuals sell games. Roblox’s character creation offers complete freedom, whereas this game has very little visual character appeal, freedom or creativity, while somehow being even greedier. The ugly cosmetics are solely made by the developers, who prioritised selling them through the game’s launch using limited-time sales.
• The game’s list of games is full of AI slop. This isn't necessarily Facepunch’s fault, but it makes up 99% of the game. There are a few games that are extremely well developed, and all credit goes to their creators, but they feel like needles in a haystack.
• The game was marketed around showcasing the greatness of the Source 2 engine, yet all of Facepunch’s own game modes, such as the default Sandbox game mode, are awfully optimised. The standard Facepunch-made Construct map not only looks like dog faeces smeared across my screen, but it also runs terribly on my considerably powerful PC. The default guns, UIs and animations also look incredibly cheap, to the point where Garry’s Mod can look more graphically impressive.
There’s probably a lot more that I could list, and hopefully some saving grace will come along and save this game years down the line, as it had incredible potential. If only Garry had made a Garry’s Mod 2 using Valve’s new assets.
